Color LJ 4600 Laser Scanner by eubiewsc (7/2/09 11:29 AM) reply + / -
I was getting a 51.k error on my 4600 printer. I replaced the black laser scanner assembly and put the printer back together. Now the black appears to be out of alignment. I was very cautious when I replaced it I used a support so the printer frame would not flex. I made sure the scanner was attached to the strap, etc. I have taken the printer apart a second time to see if anything is obviously wrong and I can not find the problem but the black is still out of alignment. I have also run a calibration which did not help. Has anyone experienced this problem before? Is it possible that the replacement scanner assembly is bad and that's why it is out of alignment? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Your not really given us much info on the alignment problem. Is it skewed, is it to one of the sides, is it up or down? there is a slot in the front that a plastic notch on the scanner goes into. Its possible you didnt get it in all the way. Check on the right side of the printer you can see pretty much the position of all the scanners from the side. Did you run the Caliration Now in the control panel once you turned it back on? If not you didnt follow the replacement instructions. Is the alignment way off or just slightly? You can check the scanner by putting it in another slot. They are universal.

The alignment is off to the right, not skewed or up and down. It is off quite a bit. I did run the Calibrate Now in the control panel. I will try moving it to another slot. The problem is that it is a major job to take this printer apart and put back together only to discover that the problem still exists.

I have not run into your problem but have replaced the laser/scanner on this printer and most times it has been the black at the top. I have discovered that most times the issue is the laser/scanner motor inside has binded up and believe it or not the motor in this scanner assembly is the same as the lj2200 motor and 90% of the time it can be repaired. See my post in the link below and do not worry about the squeal as sometimes it just binds and makes no noise.

What I suggest is if you have the old laser/scanner, open it up and use the procedure in the link above to repair the laser/scanner motor and reinstall the original scanner and if it now works see if you have the same issue. It is possible the new scanner as a lens or something else just a shade off.

I have this problem also with one of our printers. I'm sure it's the scanner that's noisy as it has that distinct sound. In our store cupboard we have a few bottles of "IBM No.2 Oil", apparently the previous on-site technicians used this to lubricate the scanners in IBM 4019 printers (a common fault apparently). Would this be suitable for the Color Laserjet 4600 scanner?

I do not know what ibm no 2 oil is but the oil should be synthetic and you only use a very very small amount like 1 drop. Now your printer is very very old and I would think the noise may be from the scanner or some other part since 20 year old lasers do not last forever.
