4350tn tray 3 jamming

4350tn tray 3 jamming by Ryan Kimbrel (6/17/09 1:50 PM) reply + / -
HP 4350tn jamming in Tray 3, reporting error 13.01.00. Tray is lifting, as the indicator on the front rises after the tray is closed. There is rarely an actual jam.

I have replaced Tray 3 with Tray 2 and the same occurs, so it would appear to be caused by the rollers that push the paper from tray 3 to tray 2? A maintenance kit was installed on this printer earlier this year. The rollers all appear to be okay though.

Any ideas? Thank you!

What you need to do is observe what is happening. Since you have the 2 trays, you can send a job to the first tray and watch the proper operation from the slot in the back of the tray. A flashlight helps. Then look at the bad tray and you can see why it isn't working properly.
I recently had one that was like that and the gear and bushing on the end of the shaft were bad and had to be replaced. Not an easy job the first time you do it, but once you know how, it's not bad.

Moe, just did that. The tray raises properly. Looking from the rear of the printer, the paper appears to bunch up on the right side. I'm not able to determine exactly what might be the cause though, as it's not visible (or at least I didn't see it). For the gear and bushing, what exactly am I looking for with that? What exactly are those two and where are they located? Thank you!

Let me make sure I understand this. When you put Tray 2 down in the tray 3 spot, the same problem kept happening. That would eliminat it being a problem with the tray which would make more sense. If you can't see what is stopping the paper, there has to be an obstruction of some sort right at the point where the paper is crumpling on the rt. side (I assume that's looking from the back). You will have to look and see if you can determine what it is hitting. If it's partially going up into the printer, then tilt it on its back and look up into the slot and see if there is a scrap of paper up there.
