Dell 3010CN toner recognition problem

Dell 3010CN toner recognition problem by Windsoar (2/19/09 7:49 AM) reply + / -
I am tryng to install my first replacement black toner cartridge in this laser printer having previously replaced each of the colours without problem. The replacement cartridge is a genuine Dell prduct but is the larger capacity "4000 pages" version. The printer does not recognise it although it inserts without problem exactly as the old one and the colours. Can anybody advise whether this capacity of cartridge is cmpatible with the 3010CN and if so, what I need to do to enable the printer to recognise it. Dell's support system seems to be a circular process leading to premium telephone numbers.

Dell 3010 will only accept 2000 page cartridges.

The 4000 page cartridges are for the Dell 3100 and have a different 'chip' so are not recognised as 2000 page units.

thank you. I have been able to use a 2000 page replacement and sell the larger capacity cartridge.

In the theme of toner recognition rather than consumption issues...

Got a 3100cn. Power up and follow the prompts to insert
each toner in sequence. After all four *new* toners are
installed it now comes up with

Cyan (C) Toner
ID Error

Remove/reinstall Cyan. Remove/reinstall all toners.
Can't get any further. I don't know if the problem
is really with the Cyan or if it can't ID any of
them and Cyan is just the first prompt.

The little tit on each cartridge is in the right
spot for the respective color.

How are the cartridges identified? Mechanical
via microswitch? Optically with a photosensor?

Having a service manual would be nice. Having
a HP would be better from what I read about
this printer.

Ideas?

I found this printer presented more than it's fair share of problems and when it developed a fault with all four cartridges low I decided it was better to ditch and replace with an HP! I don't have the answer to your questions, but do have the 3010CN instruction sheet if it helps.
And the faulty printer is available for spares / repair to anybody able to collect from the Ivinghoe area or Bedford where I work or Watford when they play at home or Aylesbury / Luton when I head that way. No charge - just a donation to my London Marathon fundraising for Mencap.

OK, here's what I've found:

On the left side there's a board marked "LEFX"
and nearby on the frame is a label with the
FCC ID number. Running that number thru the
FCC database I found the documents and pictures
submitted by the testing agency. Very informative.

There are two coils -- one on the right end of the
toner cartridge and looks like a ferrite magnet
(but isn't) and the other is on the frame and
aligns with the toner. (there is another set
for the belt/drum unit) These are coils which
are excited by a 125kHz signal and have a chip
in their center. [cue dramatic music] It uses
RFID technology. In fact, the coil in the toner
cartridge is referred to as the "tag".

The "LEFX" has some significance and is mentioned
throughout the documents ... hint: FX = Fuji/Xerox.

All that is nice but doesn't fix the original
problem of ID Error but now I know wherein the
magic resides.

One other curiosity... each of the four new toners
have a label stuck on the "tag" coil. The label
says "Epson".
