Lexmark T644 950.10 NV RAM failure error by Sannu (6/4/08 4:29 AM) reply + / -
I get this error after after I replaced the operator panel assembly for a Lexmark T644. Now the op panel is working well but I get this 950.10 error. Does this mean that I should replace the system board too? Can someone please help!

Do you have any options on it(extra memory, font chips, nic, etc). If so, i'd reseat all. Also double check the connector for the display and make sure it doesn't have any bent pins.

I don't have the newest lexmark manuals, so i don't know the exact code, but otherwise it looks like system board.

on the t64x models the nvram resides on the op panel , the system card , and the interconnect board. i would ask why you had to replace the op panel before i could really comment these models also use a process called nvram mirroring where the nvram settings are copied to the replacment module when it is replaced and once this has happened the part cant be swapped to another printer so im thinking you have either got a used or faulty op panel depending on the original fault. you could also have a faulty system card but be carefull, you cant replace both parts at the same time or you stuff the nvram mirror procedure and render the printer useless, if you must replace the system card put the old op panel in first power the printer on till it stops making start up noises or comes to ready then power off and then replace op panel if needed

good luck

This site has been good to me So I am going to share some private stuff I found out regarding this issue.

We were getting ready to roll out 400 to replace the t522. If the electronics fail the MFG has to fix it if it under warranty they will replace it.

One of the early placed units had started having electronic trouble. I proceeded to work on it and after extensive troubleshooting and going back and forth. When it comes to servicing these new Lexmark printers conventional methods don’t apply. (seriously the service manual tell you only up to so much. For the record I have never seen a t644 electronic issue fixed in the feild. 5 early placed units had nvram issues all whole printers needed to be replaced.

Calling customer support and having a systemboard or op panel replacememt part shipped wont solve the problem. These are not field replaceable parts because a special hexadecimal config setup that is only done in the factory can fix it and they aren’t giving up that info. At least yet.

They are currrently hoping that lexmark will havE some type of flash firmware to allow service onsite. This has caused a major problem. They sell these things and won't tell the sser and after the year warranty. The user pays mfg to get it fixed.

Below I am releasing a private response sent from the top after much complaing and the leverage of having a large supply.

I HAD TO EXCLUDE THE NAMES SO PLEASE UNDERSTAND

Per our conversation:

There are 3 NVRAM locations on our T644 devices: The Controller
Board,
Interchange Card, and Operator Panel Card.
It is important to install one item at a time, power cycling between
each install.
If you are installing one of these boards/cards, they need to have
the
default NVRAM. Thus, a board/card from another printer can not be
used
as a replacement part. Erasing the contents of the boards/cards is a
proprietary process and it is not a public-release type of product.

NOTE THE SUPPORT LINE DOES NOT TELL YOU THIS THIS WAS FROM THE TOP.

THE KEY HERE IS THE LAST 2 LINES BECAUSE THE SERVICE MANUAL WILL LEAD YOU TO BELIEVE THAT INSTALLING ONE AT A TIME AND POWER CYCLING WILL TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM. WITHOUT THE PROPRIETY PROCESS IT CAN'T BE DONE. EVERY POWERCYCLE YOU WILL GET A NVRAM ERROR MESSAGE.

If there are already out in production most of us are screwed. I was lucky to cacth this before the the roll out so we have some leverage. I will update once the solution or decision is done.

The thing that got me was the interconnect card looked like a pci riser card. I found it hard to believe that replacing that card from another printer would render the printer useless.

On more note you cannot swap electronic parts from another printer to test. Sorta like the old way of troubleshooting.

Swapping parts will give you nvram error messages on both printers and possible render the good one useless.

Sannu,

This message usually when you instal a used part which contains NVRAM settings. In this printer the Operator panel stores the NVRAM settings of the printer.

I would try and replace just the diplay part of the op panel, not the whole assembly. The whole assembly would also contain a chip that stores the NVRAM settings of the printer. so try to install just the display panel not the whole assembly including the corcuit board.

The same message came from new previously uninstalled parts as well. Without the getting the prioritary process info it will be very hard. Never say never but I have yet to see it fixed.

Lexmark hasn't really been called on it because like I said up until the warranty expires they initiate a direct swap out. That is when the first red flag went up. We had a few that had these errors and normally the proceduure was ship the part. Well with these they were calling for swap.

The swaps will work until the warranty expires then the consumer holds the bag.

We were blessed with having new parts constantly shipped as well as stock units to initially try to troubleshoot.

My trunk unit sits in the garage 950.10 error now awaiting the conclusion.

If you have working units at your disposal that you can work on
here is what I sent upstate
Warning *****(this might permanently mess up both printers) To simulate what I think is the problem I told him to take one interconnect card out of one printer and put it in the other. If I am right he will get a 950.10 NVram mismatch error on powerup.

Place the card back the original printer and it might work proving a tie in.

They tried it and they got the message. Out of state company engineers confirmed my findings. Because they swapped the interconnnect card got the 950.10 nvram error message and could not resolve and fix the printer. The error message pops up before you can access any type of config. Holding all the buttons in the service manual still the error message takes precedents. I will keep you all updated as to Lexmarks and the
our companys resolution to this.

When asked
Bottom line
What configuration is done at the plant? Which hexadecimals to use when configuring?

Please read page 112 confiuration ID and pg 189 of the service manual
What are Configuration id's 1 or id 2

That is when they said this procedure is a non public release

Good luck

One more thing. Trying to explain like this didn't convey the extent of the problem. Which is understandable. Most of us techs want to try to resolve get our hands on it. It wasn't taken seriously until they tried the interconnect cards got the error and then tried to fix the printers did the stuff hit the fan because people need there printers up and running.

But we already had tons sitting there getting ready for a rollout already eaten into the warranty time. Also when Lexmark would send swap outs the printers were packaged horribly arriving broken by being tossed around.

If you're capable with a soldering iron, you can just swap the chip from the old LCD onto the new one.
I done this and it works fine.

Hope this helps

Which Chip? IC1 or IC3?

Did anyone ever find out how to do the nvram reset for this problem?

Thanks.

I recently replaced a display on a T644 and had the NV RAM error.

I noticed this was a refurbished item and therefore would not work.

I then replaced it with a brand new item which worked perfectly.

When replacing the display panel, interconnect board and system board all items must be new and unused or you will get the above error.

you can just swap the chip IC3 from the old LCD onto the new one.
I done this and it works fine. It is NVram on op Good luck
