I am having all sorts of problems with HP 3005dn
Formatter boards. Problems like printer freezing
up, no display problems , messages saying RFU LOAD ERROR
SEND RFU NOW on power up .ect
Can anybody shed any light on these problems.
I have tried removing the battery from the formater card
but no joy. Is there any issues with these boards.
Please help.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Sharpie (edited 4/10/08 12:40 PM) reply + / -
Hmm well I looked it up & to my amazement there is a service note for that problem. Its recommends the tech. examines the formatter board & look for a toshiba chip, if its there to replace the formatter board.

Heres what some of it says...

The HP LaserJet P3005 Printer Series (all bundles) has the potential to start up with a Blank Display or INFLATE FAILURE – RESEND RFU UPGRADE error message. The error appears to be caused by a Toshiba NAND Flash chip on the formatter board. To date, approximately 25% of the P3005's shipped within the specified serial number range have the Toshiba NAND part.

Q7815A Serial range starting at CND00000 & ending at CNF99999

You got 2 options
- Use this link to find a service provider near you (you might have to tell them theres a service note on this, as not all places may be aware its out there)
http://hp.infonow.net

or Call it into HP yourself 1-800-HP-INVENT (1-800-474-6836).

*Basically a service note is a free repair even if the machines warranty has expired as long as it has the failure description & falls within the serial number range. Some notes don't pay for onsite repairs, so that might be extra if a provider offers it (just to warn you, not sure if this has onsite or not)

Thanks Sharpie for the reply. I cant see any toshiba
chips on the boards and the serial numbers on the printers
i have are in the format of eg CNF1T68656 . I am not sure
if it is the last 5 digits are the revalant ones.
Anybody out there have any more info.

Heres a Pic I found, the chip is covered by a label (which may look different then the label pictured). Should help you w/ the location of the chip in question.

my chip is very difficult to read but i do not see the word 'toshiba' on it. i do see a big 'ST' on it. is this a toshiba chip?

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Sharpie (4/8/08 4:56 AM) reply + / -
Well from your earlier post your serial # does fall within the list covered by the service note.

Either way the formatter is bad & needs replaced. Not sure on the chip if that ST is the toshiba chip or not, I'd guess you'd still be able to get the machine covered by the service note anyway being you got the same error as it describes.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by cscotech (4/8/08 12:18 PM) reply + / -
well i called the 800 number and had to give them $40 just to talk to a tech about the service note since the printer was out of warranty. the 'st' is NOT a toshiba chip and is not covered under the service note. so i guess i'm off to ebay to try and find a formatter board.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by johntriumph (4/8/08 3:41 PM) reply + / -
An ST Chip means its a THOMSON SEMICONDUCTOR chip
The Toshiba chip clearly says TOSHIBA.
I got a new board with an ST chip a short while ago
and the board seemed to work ok but the ones with
the SAMSGUNG chips have always worked consistantly.
Anybody ever tried to replace chips like these.
I wonder could a component level repair be possible?
Someone do a google on the part number and check
availability !!

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Sharpie (4/9/08 5:22 AM) reply + / -
Large companies might do board repairs like Liberty Parts Team, Parts Now, Depot America, etc (If they can get the chip). The thing with a chip like this is its impossible to hand solder it to the board, the connections are too close. It takes a special machine that solders all the connections at the same time. I don't recall the name of it but I believe they have interchangeable templates for different size/shaped chips too.

The formatter Part # is Q7848-61002

I have the same problems with my P3005.
Yesterday I have updated the firmware to the latest version. Now I have no more display problems, RFU LOAD ERROR's, or 49.4C02 Printer Error's, but sometimes the printer is still freezing.
I think there is a problem with the chip at the formatter board. Now I will replace the NAND flash chip, if I can get the chip and it does not cost so much. Removing & soldering are not problems for me.
Someone can tell me the designation of the correct chip?

Sorry for my bad english :)

Is there special equipment necessary for replacing
these chips? Can a special head for a soldiering

6 Bords???? wow...

Of course you need special equipment to replace these chips.
If you want take a look at the COOPER Hand Tools Website
http://www.cooperhandtools.com/brands/weller/index.cfm
or if you can read german here:
http://www.jbctools.com/pdf/Catalogos/Advanced/CatAdvAle.pdf

You can find there a lot of special desoldering heads.

I too have problem with this model. Didn't get Resend or RFU error but 49. 4C2D, 4C02 error. Printer freezes, cant get into control panel, sometimes MEM TEST FAILURE REPLACE DIMM 0, WARR. expired in March. Serial number in range. Jumped through hoops with HP & of course it wouldn't fail. And for only $369 I could swap for another one. Have already upgraded firmware, put back in service and same problems. MEM error again. Does anyone have service note number or info? Any help appreciated.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Sharpie (edited 4/9/08 6:27 PM) reply + / -
Hey Walliec,

Sorry I don't have access to service notes anymore. Most of them are considered confidential & not for public viewing anyway so you might not get anyone to give it out. You'd have to meet the failure problems listed anyway to qualify. Even though you might fall into that serial # range it doesn't mean you have a board w/ that failing Toshiba chip.

You sure it says DIMM 0 & not DIMM 1? Theres only 1 expanison slot available for memory on the formatter board. If it is saying DIMM 1 then I'd try replacing the memory stick first. DIMM 1 is the only one listed in the service manual

If it does say DIMM 0 you're probably needing a replacement formatter board, but try a NVRAM reset first, see Steven's post here for how to do that. (note that the reset will clear page counts & serial # from the board, if a network model it'll clear the network settings too)

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by moe (4/9/08 4:18 PM) reply + / -
I believe those surface mounted chips are put on at the factory using hot air. I'm wondering if maybe they are suffering from the same cold solder problems as the 610N and 615N JetDirect cards have. The boards are basically dead, so you have nothing to lose by trying the following experiment which has brought back quite a few JetDirect cards from the dead. Get a Hair Dryer. You'll need a good one that puts out a lot of heat. The one I use puts out over 1200 degrees, but people have had success using ordinary hair dryers. Heat the chip for 10-15 seconds, moving the hair dryer around the chip. Somebody please try it and report back.

If my printer were switched off for a long time, it works for 5 minutes. Then he is still freezes.
Is the "printer freezing problem" also a problem from the formatter board?

My Printer: Q7812A
S/N: CNCW6CY11V
Formatter P/N: Q7847-60001

Someone can tell me whether it is possible to be inserted a new board with Part Q7848-61002?

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by dmzcompute (4/10/08 5:17 AM) reply + / -
Folks there is a service note for this and the best action is not to call hp but contact an authorized service provider in your area and talk to them and see if you bring it in will take care of the repair under the service note. If they do you pay nothing and the service provider gets a small fee from hp which also provides the replacment part at no charge. Trying to repair these yourself or calling hp directly in my opinion is a waste of time since hp's customer care has gone down in the toilet in recent months.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by johntriumph (4/10/08 7:46 AM) reply + / -
I Am going to try the hair drier trick when i get the next one
in for repair. Even better still i can use a heat gun.
I do not think it will work because the chip is a samsung
chip on later boards. It looks like the toshiba chip had
a fault. I let ye know ho i get on.

Ok... first I will look how much cost a new "7847-board"

unfortunately the printer is out of warranty :(

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Sharpie (4/10/08 12:39 PM) reply + / -
service notes cover machines even if out of warranty so it's always worth a shot to try. Like DMZ said you'll get better results by contacting an authorized dealer. Sometimes you can get someone from HP to help but it can take time.

Try this link for finding a dealer near you.

Hi,

I called an authorized service provider. He told me that I must pay for a new board (140€), because the warranty has expired.

Nice HP-Service here in Germany :( .

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by dmzcompute (4/11/08 5:29 AM) reply + / -
Try another service provider until you find one that will look up the service note. I would also tell them that you will be reporting back to hp those providers who refused to honor the service note. There are good providers and bad providers. If you find one that will do the repair as per the service note, then contact hp with the names of the ones that would not do the repair. Keep in mind I do not know if the service note is good in Germany. I know it is good in the US.

Boy, I am going to try the heat gun or hair dryer on my jetdirect 615 cards that are out of the serial # range for the free HP replacement & report back on it. I don't have any 3005's to work on but, I know a hospital that recently bought about 30 of them. --- On calling HP direct --- in 13 years I have only once paid them for support & it was a joke. A good warranty center can run a claim on a printer with no human interaction & it is a lot easier for them to help you & get paid from HP for it. Years ago there was a known issue like this that if you called HP they said they didn't know about any service note & sorry it was out of warranty & some local warranty centers said the same thing. Sadly, many customers believe this stuff. We became HP certified in the product with the problems & shortly after started helping a very big company with THOUSANDS of failing equipment. Other warranty centers were already charging them for the repairs & when we came in we were able to fix you guessed it -- THOUSANDS of machines at no cost to the customer & HP picked up the whole tab. We were tickled pink or green $$ you might say & so was our customer. They trusted HP then & bought another $ million worth of HP stuff. This issue should also be covered.

Re: Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Haelge (4/12/08 4:14 AM) reply + / -
I called 5 service centers. They all meant that I have to pay for the new board.
So I called HP directly. HP said the same. The service coworker spoke only broken German. I think the callcenter is somewhere in Eastern Europe. *grr*
But he was friendly. He said there is a problem with the formatter board and gave me also the part number of a new board. He meant I can replace the old Q7847-60001 with the new Q7848-61002 board.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by dmzcompute (4/12/08 7:04 AM) reply + / -
This is the document number:

c01215806

As I said I am in the US and it is good here. I can not say about other countries or locations. Try to find a service provider who will submit a service note warranty claim using that document number and tell them you will replace the part and bring them the old part when you pickup the warranty part. This way they have nothing to lose and will get a small fee from hp for just doing 20 minutes of computer work. The other thing you can do is write to the hp headquarters in the US and tell them that a friend of yours who is an hp tech told you of this document number, but his company can not service yours and when you tried a few authorized providers they refused saying you had to pay. Ask them in the letter what gives that some people get the item repaired for free even if the warranty has expired and others have to pay. Seems like a double standard and maybe a class action lawsuit will help hp treat all customers the same. You may get a response from them. They know of the issue since approximately 25% of the P3005 printers that shipped during that time frame had the bad chip.

I have recieved a new formatter from HP under that service note.
It is a network/USB only, so now I have to get a new I/O plate to fit it. They do not have a board with parallel.
The new HP's for home use are a joke. Designed to fail, and shoddily made with too fragile parts. The average user does not treat these units with care, nor do they care.
Yes, by all means do inform HP of service providers lax in their willingness to assist. We who look on this as a career, not just a job, know our expertise is a benchmark for quality work.
I do more than address only the immediate problem, and return a unit that is thouroughly and completely operational.

There is a board with a parallel/usb option

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by MichaelTech (4/17/08 11:13 AM) reply + / -
No. anyone who says they have it does not. It is not available on any site I googled. The only issue I have is that the I/O panel dows not accept the new board. The pn# for it exists, but I was sent the plastic cover for the power cable.
No one will show a picture of this part because they will just send the plastic! If you have a P3005 that is shot, and it has a USB/Network I/O panel, {it unscrews} let me know, I will buy it.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Haelge (4/22/08 2:52 AM) reply + / -
Hi,

today I spoke with another service coworker. It was a woman and she also spoke broken German. She told me that the service note treats only the rfu-error and not my "freezing-problem". In her opinion the problem is not the formatter. I think, she have no plan. Also told me my printer would be too old (the 1-year warranty has expired in dec. 2007????)and I must bring in the printer to HP. They want to make a cost estimate.
I throw the printer rather out of the window. I did not experience for a long time so a bad service. This is not a service, this is only shit. I will buy no more products from HP. Sorry, but I am very furious.

Now I will contact my local service provider again, buy a new formatter and replace the board myself.

Finally broke down and ordered express swap. Couldn't find an HP certified within 150 miles to agree to fix under service note. Could not find part online myself. After firware upgrade and clearing NVRAM still a piece of junk. Part number on the board is Q7847-80101 Rev B and sticker part number is Q7848-60002. Maybe next time I spend $900 I'll buy Lexmark or Okidata???

I have partner access to HP and cannot find this document in the data base. I have had a rash of these problems and almost all have been out of warranty. The HP solution to download the latest firmware is impossible if you can't access the printer, network or USB. Is this the current, correct document number? Thanks

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by F Rice (10/6/08 11:29 AM) reply + / -
Never mind, I found 3 emerging issue notes on this problem. I wish I had gone to this trouble before I changed 4 or 5 formatter boards out. By the way, the DIMM failure issue appeared on a new (May) P3005 still under warranty. HP is now issuing 61004 formatter boards with 96mb memory instead of 80.

I have a p3005dn which is throwing frequent "MEM TEST FAILURE REPLACE DIMM" messages; the issue is intermittent.

I have replaced the DIMM, but this error persists. HP told me via the phone that there is "no recall information for this product". Should I ask for a certain division? The s/n is cnd1sxxxxx; does this fall in the range (seems to) for the bad formatter board?

Thanks all,
David

What access do you have to HP? Are you a partner with access to the CSN network? I have 3 items from HP identifying this and similar problems due to a bad Toshiba chip on the formatter board. It is the small one on top with the sticker on it. Lift up the sticker and see if it says Toshiba. When I have time I am going to attempt to get HP to replace the 4 or 5 formatter boards I have changed out. Changing the formatter board may be your only answer.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by speckledpig (10/28/08 6:28 AM) reply + / -
No, I apparently don't have access to the CSN network (not sure what that is). I am just trying to fix this for my father-in-law's business.

I am going to try the local vendor route...maybe that will help push this through?

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by HP-Printer-Dave (11/18/08 10:20 AM) reply + / -
GOOOOOOOD NEWS on the formatter boards that are hanging up at the memory count or before READY comes up. It is the defective TOSHIBA chip on the top middle of the formatter board & usually there is a white sticker over the chip. I confirmed it 100% !!!!
But the bad news is HP will only give the extended warranty to the serial number range which is listed in a post somewhere on this site; I think starting with CND----?? So I called a local warranty center & luckily the guy knew how to look up service notes & said the note is DOC #C01215806 but my printer did not fall under the range & so I was out of luck. ---- So, since the new formatter is $296 from HP & they are on back-order there was no loss in trying the experiment listed previously. My P3005 printer would only get to the ready state once in 20 power on's & then hang when I tried to even run a test page. So I opened the right side doorways to expose the formatter & put a good hot blow-dryer up to the bad chip on the top middle & let it get good & hot & turned on the printer -- it booted but the display was lit but blank & stayed blank. I kept the heat on & re-booted the printer again & the display then stayed black with no light at all & I thought well I am getting somewhere. Then, without the blow dryer I booted it again & still got the dead display -- no light at all. I let the formatter cool for 3 minutes & re-booted & then got the blank display with light; then I knew I didn't destroy the board but the plastic casing above the formatter got a little warped from the heat -- just barely. Then -- by desparate means-- anothe re-boot & the memory counted all the way up & it went to ready & printed. Now it works on the network again & after 4 days it boots up 85% of the time & prints normally. BUT, when it goes to sleep mode it will not come out of sleep so I have to re-boot it then. Sorry for this long story but it may be worth $300 to someone else. Dave L. Utah.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by opcso (11/18/08 11:19 AM) reply + / -
This problem goes way beyond the Toshiba chip. I have had replacement boards fail. As an authorized technician and large customer I have had this problem run up to the product engineering level at HP. I have had to replace 2 or 3 formatter boards under warranty so the serial numbers are way beyond that range and the chip in question is not Toshiba. So far no Q7848-61004 part number boards have failed. I have just loaded the latest firmware on to the 70 or so P3005 printers on our network as recommended in various HP bulletins and the jury is still out. It is no easy task to load this firmware, we are using HP JetAdmin software which takes a dedicated PC with extra memory just to run it. I feel sorry for all the one or two printer guys that are trying to deal with this issue without the resources I have. HP may or may not extend the warranty based on what I have told them, but it can't be just me complaining. Good luck out there.

I just recently bought a replacement (Brand New) P3005DN off EBAY for $450 & saw another 5 minutes later for $400 after I paid for mine. It came as open box but was new with the new toner & 1 year warranty. My bad P3005DN doesn't fall under the serial # range & I am teed off about that & I bet some other people are having to pay for replacement printers when their bad one is only 2 years old. HP I love your older printers but, hate what you have done recently !!!! Can you not make a reliable printer anymore ????

The HP P3005 models Q7812A and Q7813A models have a formatter board with a parallel port and no network jack.

The current replacement part number for this formatter is Q7847-61004. Note that HP's Partsurfer and other web sites are ambigious and/or wrong about which part number to use.

So, if you need to replace a formatter for one of the above models, be sure to order a Q7847-61004 formatter.

The previous post is correct, I should have mentioned that the part number I used is for the resident or on board network interface and does not use a separate network card. This is supplied with the P3005n model (n being network capability supplied). This printer has only network and USB jacks and the card slot is blanked off.

Any reason why we have to pay for this board when it is clearly a HP problem and that this happens after the warranty expires or one year after initial use? Anyone considering a class action lawsuit to have HP fix these at their expense? My board is Q7847-61003 formatter number KG3DTNM and I am getting all kinds of errors and or freezing at printer boot up. only printed 3,700 pages.

It was freezing, so I tried to flash the firmware.. it flashed said I think that the firmware flash completed on the printer display, then the printer started to eject blank pages, Now I get the download firmware ...etc message. This printer is within the serial # range, although it has a Samsung chip....has anyone tried to unsolder the + side of the battery?

I tried removeing the battery for 10 minutes
no change. You would be wasteing your time.
The board needs to be replaced.

I took my P3005dn to my local warranty center & explained to them that there are "service notes" or "advisories" that HP themselves creates when enough printers have the same problem even out of warranty & the problem part should not fail. Mine had memory count failures & blank display & freezing up at boot errors. HP will let a warranty center get paid to fix these under the service note. I got a new formatter board under warranty & mine is running great; it is 2 years old with only 14,000 pages on it. Had to enlighten my warranty center though & wait 9 days for the repair but I am happy HP came through on it even after they said on the phone they would not cover it!!!

Be advised that the downlosding of the latest firmware as suggested by HP and carried out by my organization will not prevent these failures. I am continuing to report all failures to an HP contact but so far no satisfactory resolution has appeared. I have 5 or 6 formatter boards that have failed out of warranty and even one replacement board for a previous failure that also failed. So far no 61004 boards, all with 96k memory instead of 80k, have failed.

Has anyone tried the heat gun (hairdrier) and has it been a success? Someone suggested to me that it could be cold solder joint, but I'm inclined not to believe it. I believe it is a manufacturing defect of a certain batch of formatters. HP changed vendors and ever since then there have been quality issues (P2015's have a similar formatter issue). Several of my customers are putting the non network boards in and installing jet direct cards to get around these issues, because the problem seems to be almost exclusively with the embedded network formatters.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by johntriumph (2/6/09 6:39 AM) reply + / -
I have tried the heatgun no joy.
The only solution is to replace the formatter
with latest revision board.

I am afraid you are wasting your time attempting to avoid this problem with a firmware download. 1st of all once this happens there is no communication with the printer at all. 2nd, every P3005 printer on our network was updated via the HP JetDirect Admin network program and the boards still fail. So far no Q7848-61004 formatter board has failed. I have taken this all the way up to the P3005 product engineer and still have received no satisfactory answer. One thing is certain, the one chip listed as causing this problem in HP service literature is not the problem, or at least not the only problem. I have 7 formatter boards sitting here out of warranty and destined for the landfill unless HP steps up and offers to exchange them.

I'd keep the 8150DN...

They are relatively cheap to maintain.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by opcso (2/7/09 5:54 PM) reply + / -
I agree, the 8150 is a good printer. Every now and then you put in a roller kit and it runs until you can't remember when you serviced it last. Note, don't forget to reset the counter if you do put in a kit.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Anonymous (3/4/09 8:58 AM) reply + / -
If you see this error on the screen, the firmware code is corrupted.
You must replace the formatter or replace the flash chip on the board.

Re: Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by moe (3/4/09 5:44 PM) reply + / -
Heatguns are hit and miss. You have to heat the right chip for the right amount of time. Cook the whole board in an oven at 400 degrees F for 5 minutes. That will reflow all the solder evenly. It's been real effective on all the JetDirect cards I've baked. Haven't had a P3005 in with the formatter problem, or I'd try it myself.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by opcso (3/4/09 6:34 PM) reply + / -
Ok, bake a circuit board in an oven? Surely this is a somewhat extreem measure? However, since I have a number of brain dead formatter boards, whats the harm? I may try this and if one comes back to life I I'll post it.

I would expect that to work on a surface mount only board. A JetDirect card show fair just fine.

Top-side surface mount parts have to be baked in the manufacturing process, while the bottom parts are usually glued on and run through the the wave soldier.

However, I just did 5 min @ 400 deg F on a P3005n formatter and smoked two of the large through-hole capacitors...

Not like I had much to lose.

I am having a similar issue as described by others with the same printer. The printer will work fine all day, but first thing in the morning the printer is froze up. It won't even respond to ping. Turning it off/back on works, but I'm wondering if there are sleep settings on the print server that I can modify. Change the sleep settings on the printer didn't help at all.

The print server shows as a model J7979E with Firmware version V.33.57. I searched for firmware upgrades, but there aren't any for this model.

Read this carefully. The Toshiba chip issue addressed by HP dates to 2007. These boards have continued to fail right up to the present day no matter what chip is on the board. After extensive discussions with HP they have one solution only. Put the latest firmware, which is 02.041.0, on the formatter board. If your printer will not come to ready it is to late. Buy another formatter board and make sure it has that firmware on it.

I can't find that service note on the HP web site (CSN). What is the complete number if you have it? It should have a -1 or some other number after the main number which I think is the issue number.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Stephen (5/20/09 7:02 AM) reply + / -
The number after the dash is now the product number.

The issue number is the document number which now comes first when placing a service note claim.

I searched on the product number Q7812A.

The "C" must be uppercase, and there might need to be a space before and after the "-".

The note applies to serial numbers starting with "CN"

Hopefully this should cure all board problems that have been on this model. Im from the U.K so I beleive part numbers are the same over-seas.

It doesn't matter what board you have, firmware 02.041.0 needs to be installed on it before it is to late. I have 75 P3005 printers and have not had a failure since all were upgraded. Knock on wood. I have HP Webjet Admin installed on the network so it was fairly easy.

Just fyi I have the same problem with one of these printers that is about 5 months out of warranty. I logged a call similar to calderdale's above with HP. First they told me it was out of warranty but I asked them to look up the service note number, they came back to say the formatter is on back order but will be shipped to me ASAP! I'm based in Ireland.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by opcso (7/29/09 5:58 AM) reply + / -
To one and all, please be aware of a new problem with these boards and firmware 02.041.0. This did not show up here until recently because it does not effect networked printers. For whatever reason, this firmware seems to prevent the use of a USB connection. The printer software off the internet will not allow you to install the USB feature. The solution seems to be to reload the original install CD for the P3005 on your computer. Hopefully everyone kept a copy. We went round and round trying to get 4 printers to work with 4 laptops via USB with no success until we found an original install disk.

I just called the HP 800 number and got the typical BLAH< BLAH< BLAH from some $3/hr clerk who works in Thailand. Since she was no help I INSISTED to speak to someone who could help me. I was then, supposedly, transferred to HP's HQ customer service.
This non-english speaking jamoke tells me he will open a case# and report it to their product review board. I said,"that's great, but who is going to repair my printer?
To make a long story short, I got LOUD and asked kept asking for the VP of Customer Service, told them I woul dlook up the Executive Board and e-mail one of them and EVEN threatened a class action law suit. (Which I am doing, I contacted a law firm in San Francisco).
Several minutes later I got the same person offering a 15 day extended warranty to fix it.

SO ARGUE, GET LOUD, threaten to sue AND DON'T HANG UP, keep asking for the boss, the boss's boss and so on.

I will advise if the law firm is going to file the suit or not. If not i will look for another. HP needs to step up to the plate and admit there's a problem with all the 3005 printers and fix them.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by opcso (8/14/09 5:51 AM) reply + / -
After some time with no formatter failures I had 2 in one day. These both had the correct firmware. One was a new board with the larger memory board. Further investigation revealed that the logic chip overheats and causes the solder connection to crack. This I heard from someone who repairs boards for a living. HP is not going to step up to the plate, I have better access than most and have had no success trying to reason or bully them into doing something.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by matmaxgeds (9/2/09 3:09 AM) reply + / -
Hi,

I had the problem with the formatter board where the paper jam and toner lights are on / no printing. I first tested that it was the formatter board that was the problem by removing the LHS of the printer with a flat screwdriver to prise it off at the back (the whole side not just the hatch) and pressing the 'print without formatter' button hidden just below the bottom right of the formatter board with a pen - this worked (page with horizontal lines came out) so formatter was the problem

I took off the formatter and put it in the oven for 8 minutes at 190 celcius (375 farenheit) after cooling I replaced it and so far the printer is now working fine. Hypothesis - one of the solder joints is faulty?

Hope this also works for some of you.

Matt

Thanks for testing out my theory. I'm glad it worked for you. It might not work for everyone, but if you can't get it replaced under warranty, there's nothing to be lost by trying this method.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by opcso (9/2/09 11:12 AM) reply + / -
I have had a number of boards repaired by a professional shop. The main logic chip runs so hot that the solder connections crack. They have said they heat the connections very carefully to 400 degrees. So far the results have been good. I thought the idea of putting the boards in an oven was a little extreme but then again what do you have to lose?

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by moe (9/2/09 11:41 AM) reply + / -
Maybe after the successful oven heating, one should get a small chunk of aluminum to act as a heat sink and put it on top of the chip with some heat sink compound. That would prevent future problems.

Have a P3005d bad right out of the box, had one last week bad right out of the box, albiet that box sat on a shelf for 14 months. Any way both had "Mem Test Failure Replace DIMM 0 "

Yeap, formatter board. Both do not satisfy the SN requirement from the Service Bulletin, I am going to order new formatter boards for both.

The updated Part Number for today on Part Surfer is: Q7847-61006

On chip was an ST, one was a Samsung. Though the 2 printers are 14 months apart both have the same board part number and revision. no matter, this thread helped nail the problem down.

We purchased our 3005dn's on 7/2/08. already one is down with the same issues with not being able to get through the memory test or it just freezes up. chatted online with rep before i found this forum and nothing can be done since it is out of warranty. Seems the problems persist with this board no matter how many revisions they make to it, and it is not just with the toshiba IC, the one i have has the samsung IC.

My thoughts are why ship a product in the first place when HP had to have been aware of some issues with the product in the first place and are unwilling to stand behind anything they sell without that magical warranty. The warranty is just a way to milk more money from the consumer in the long run and HP doesn't have to take responsibility for anything they produce.

Me personally and the company I work for will never purchase another HP product again and I suggest the only way to make big corporations take responsibility is to hurt them through lack of sales and then maybe they may open their eyes, hopefully when its too late to save them from going under...but of course there is always tax-payer money to bail them out like GM.

Instead of griping, why aren't you sticking the board in an oven? It's a no cost repair and has a high success rate. It's not that difficult to remove the board, as it hangs right on the side of the printer and is easily accessible.

Thanks for the suggestion! Five minutes at 400 degrees and my 3005 is back up and running. I was a tad concerned with another piece on the board was smoking upon removal from the oven, however it fired right up and hasn't glitched since.

I have also had several of these printers die. The problem is always the Formatter board, with the same errors that others have listed.

Recently, I had one that was out of warranty doing this. Initially HP told me it was out of warranty and I would have to pay for the repair, but after a little persistence about the service note on these printers, I was able to get it repaired for free by an authorized HP service provider.

The word is that the gentleman who was fixing the formatter boards for me and also for Metrofuser and others is no longer going to do so due to the length of time it was taking him to fix them correctly. This leaves me with a serious problem since these boards continue to fail and a new one from HP is also likely to fail eventually. A lot has been said about putting these boards in an oven at 400 degrees for 5 minutes. Does anyone have exact details about this? For instance, is the board right side up or upside down? Put directly on an oven rack or somehow supported up off of a cookie sheet or something? At this point I am willing to try anything.

Yes, another person earlier said that his board was smoking somewhat after 5 min. at 400 degrees. I would have to say that this could be a problem if you are doing it in your house with children and pets etc. not to mention yourself. Any fumes are very likely toxic.

A lot of people report success at 350 degrees F or 180 degrees C for 8 minutes. 250 C is way too high and will melt stuff. Support board component side up on 4 crumpled aluminum foil balls. If there is anything plastic that looks like it might melt and can come off, remove it.

None of the connectors mounted on the board will melt. Keep in mind when they make these boards they have to use the same amount of heat to attach all the items on the board in the first place. The only thing I have heard of is sometimes and I think only on the P2105 board there is a bit of tape used to cover some chips by the expansion memory slot that needs to be removed as it will melt. Other than that the procedure should work just fine as long as you keep the oven at 350 degrees F and keep in the oven for exactly 8 minutes. Always let it cool to room temperature and also when placing in a baking pan make sure to use screws or other items on each of the corners so the board is raised and the chips are facing up.

I had some issues with a color 2600 today. Did an engine test OK, but if you send a print job, the light just blinks. Also, no print tests from the control panel either. Took it home and baked it with some cookies. I'll try it tomorrow and see if it's fixed.

It didn't work. Also baked a 4650 with 49c error. That didn't work either. No harm in trying.

I say lets get everyone together and put a Class Action against HP for defective printers. They no longer make products that work. I have ordered about 300+ of these printers and of the 300+ about 159 of them have failed. None of them have been covered under warrantee per HP. We have moved away from HP and are working with Xerox and Epson.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by moe (11/13/09 4:19 PM) reply + / -
Good luck with that, both the class action and your decision to go with those 2 models. Long time ago, I was called to Xerox hq in Manhattan Beach to fix some printers. I was somewhat surprised to find out that I was working on HP printers and that's all they had at all the desks in the office. Yeah, good luck with that choice. As for Epson, there are probably 10 times as many posts about Epson problems on this forum than any other model.

You can put an p2015 board in the oven and sometimes you have to remove a bit of tape used to cover some chips by the expansion memory slot that needs to be removed as it will melt.
But be carefull with an p3005 board! Before puting it in the oven you first have to remove the the two big electrolytic capacitors from the board otherwise they will blow up!!
You can put them back later and than it will work.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by moe (11/14/09 8:41 AM) reply + / -
I've baked P3005 boards at 350 degrees with no problems. Never had to remove the capacitors. Have a couple more to bake on Monday. Out of chocolate chip cookies as well.

Are you kidding me?!?!?!
I fought with this exact problem that's been described here forever. So after reading through this today, I pre-heated my oven to 350, put the formatter board (memory removed) in there for exactly 8 minutes. After it cooled, I put it back together and it works great! Unbeleivable! Whoever came up with this deserves a medal and their picture in the paper. Thank you!!

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by ANO31 (11/16/09 6:07 AM) reply + / -
To Yardsnot: Nice to hear that it also worked for you.
Good job!!
To Moe: I had 5 boards of the P3005 and with 2 of them blew the capacitors and 3 worked fine.So to be sure, I always remove the 2 capacitors and place them back afterwords. But it is great to hear that you never had to remove them.
The P2015 boards can be baked without removing anything (except sometimes some tape)

Thanks again. Happy to report that it's still going strong. In the past when I would finally get it to turn on error free (1 in 10 starts) the minute it went into sleep mode, it was all over. The poor little guy would go to sleep and never wake up again. So, my follow up is just to say that even after a deep sleep through the night, I click print and it wakes right up and prints.

So, by far one of the most bizzare fix suggestions I've ran into, and also one of the most effective. I'm still amazed, take it apart and put it in the oven?!?!? I told the kids I was making techno brownies, had them going for a minute.

Re: Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by moe (11/16/09 9:39 AM) reply + / -
Could very well be due to the type of oven used. I use a later model gas convection oven. The heat is more evenly distributed. Baked 6 JetDirect cards this morning and going to bake 2 P3005 boards this evening. Usually bake cookies or dinner in conjunction so the heat isn't wasted.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by opcso (11/16/09 10:06 AM) reply + / -
If any one is interested, these boards are using BGA or ball grid array soldering in which many more connections can be used in the same size chip. This is where the problem comes in specially where heat is a problem. These are repaired professionally using air which is why the oven works. However, I have had 2 P3005 boards fail after some time having been repaired in a professional shop. Google this soldering method. It is interesting and helps explain why we are all having so many problems.

Try any of the several oven bake fixes mentioned on this thread. I have not tried it myself. Proper repair of these boards with this type of soldering method requires extremely sophisticated and expensive equipment including an xray machine so you can actually see the solder connections. There are vendors who sell repaired boards on an exchange basis. This is less expensive than a new board from HP and a new board will still fail eventually. Look around on the internet.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by yardsnot (11/17/09 11:02 AM) reply + / -
munchen,

I'll tell you exactly what I did and hopefully it works for you and anyone else who has been battling this. But first, the problems I was having were those described in the above threads. Mem error during startup, misc errors on the display, failing to startup completely more often than not, and if it did manage to startup, the dreaded going into sleep mode never to wake again.

I cannot take credit for this, as I mentioned before I only tried this after reading through all of these posts. I was at the point of having nothing to lose by trying it either, the worst that was going to happen for me was it didn't work and it already didn't work, so I was out nothing.

First, I pre-heated my oven (electric oven) to 350 degrees so that the whole time it was in there would be at that temp. I made 4 balls of aluminum foil about 1/2 inch big and set the formatter on these balls on a hole where a mounting screw was. The board was set with the memory module removed, chip side up on these four balls in a baking pan.

I put the pan in the oven for EXACTLY 8 minutes. I took the pan out, let the whole thing cool down to room temperature and simply put it all back together. I powered on the 3005, watched the display and crossed my fingers. Low and behold it started right up, went through the initializing phase and landed on a ready screen.

It has been working flawlessly ever since, I'm still amazed!! I know there is no guarantee on this method, it wasn't my idea, but if you're at the point where I was and ready to just throw away a damn good printer, give it a shot.

Good luck.

Have to disagree with the above. I have fixed many of these formatters and about 75 EIO jet direct cards using this method. None has failed yet and I do not have an xray machine or whatever. Just do it carefully and it works. When I used to do the hair dryer method it would work but some would fail later. Not one of the jetdirect cards or formatters has failed so you do not need to buy from a vendor, just do it yourself and save the bucks.

I have a 3005dn for just home use on our network. From the day I bought it, it would freeze while booting maybe 1/2 or 2/3 times. It was brand new and once it finished booting, was solidly up for weeks at a time, so no real problem. Then the dreaded sleep mode that wouldn't wake... Luckily it had three months left on it's warranty. After ages with a phone tech who's big help was only to upgrade the firmware, it was pretty much completely dead.

I take it to local shop and they replace the formatter (and fuser for some reason?). A week later I get it home and... immediately has the same error. ARRRGGGG!

HP support still doesn't admit they know what's wrong with it, but they're willing to ship me a refurbished replacement. Actually a tough decision, giving up a barely used home machine for a possibly decrepit office printer that's been giving a fresh coat of paint, so to speak... but the local shop doesn't seem to be able to handle the job so off it goes.

Now four months later... I haven't been using it much since then... almost scared to depend on it and have been printing on the local inkjet for small jobs. Especially since the warranty's up on the P3005. Guess what... three error in the past week. One won't wake up, one failure while booting, one while printing.

What ever happened to HP? Sounds like they have a known problem and still only take 1/2 steps to kinda fix it. Just sad.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by dmzcompute (11/18/09 4:25 PM) reply + / -
So if out of warranty try the baking method. Seems to work so you have nothing to lose. As to hp knowing there is an issue, yes they do and they made a corporate decision to only support one of the failures due to a toshiba chip. All other out of warranty people are just out of luck. HP has really gone downhill over the last 2 years when it comes to customer support and do not count on it getting better. Looks to me like it will get worse until they have a really bad quarter and then someone wakes up and realizes the people of buying other makers products due to the bad support.

It seems to me that recently there have been a few models of HP printer with electronics problems, these also generally have a serial number starting with CN (ie, China). Didn't get many electronics faults when the printers were mainly manufactured in the US and Japan!

I have found a better way.

I have a P3005 Printer with a Q7847-60001 board(Toshiba chip).

I just got my board repaired with a BOSCH heat gun (GHG 660 LCD) and some liquid flux.
I applied a large amount of flux to both the IC and the PCB . Then I heated these areas with the heat gun (350 - 400 degrees celsius) for for about 20 - 30 seconds.

Now the printer works fine.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by dmzcompute (11/21/09 2:44 PM) reply + / -
The heat gun method is well know, but keep in mind most people do not have a heat gun and they are not cheap. Just about everyone has a oven so I would think the oven is the better way for most people.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by moe (11/21/09 10:06 PM) reply + / -
dmz and I both had repeat failures with the heat gun method on JetDirect cards. Since I started baking, I had one JetDirect card fail again and that was after 18 months. The oven method is safer because you can't control how much heat you are applying in the one area, where the oven evenly heats the entire board. I feel that's much preferable.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Haelge (11/22/09 5:17 AM) reply + / -
Hm, 350°F are 175°C. Thats no temperature where the solder will be melt.

The melting point of most solder is in the region of 188°C (370°F)

For Lead-free soldering (RoHS) you need a higher temperature:

Sn-0,7%Cu melting point 227 °C
Sn-3,5%Ag melting point 221 °C
Sn-3,5%Ag-0,7%Cu melting point 217 °C

Is it not strange. It works!!! All you are trying to do is to tell people the method should not work. Well it works and I have about half dozen formatters and over 75 jetdirect cards to prove it.

I just baked the board at 350F for 8 minutes in a convection oven. It works. The printer came back online after a few cycles of the logo on the main screen.

Now i'm waiting to see whether the fix will last. I used to be able to power the printer on and have it work for at least an hour or so before it wouldn't respond. But so far so good. When i saw the recommendation i really thought it was a joke... but having nothing to lose i baked it.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Russ Blakeman (11/24/09 8:24 AM) reply + / -
For those of you trying the homebrew oven methods and heat guns you might note that those SMT chips are put in place by robots with a small sticky to hold it in place and solder paster on the board and it's run through an oven as a whole board and immediately cooled at the end. No airflow is used in the ovens as it would fling chip caps and resistors all over the place. Well for home repair same applies - the best method is a hot air soldering station as you can focus the heat only on the contacts and there is such a low flow of air that it won't blow anything around. Also too much heat will kill semiconductors besides melting plastics as noted. An alternative would be a butane pocket torch that has adjustable flame that you can bring down to a low low flame so it doesnt blow too hard but delivers heat where it's needed.

Biggest problem with HP is that they are still in business. Once the last of the founders passed away the company went to crap and steadily worse since, even in the expensive server lines. I was an ASP from early 2000 till they killed ASPs off that werent promoting them by buying outrageous amounts of resellables - since 2006 I havent seen a HP/CPQ item I would personally buy for myself so I'm sure not selling them. Same with Dell. Acer is my focus now and possibly Gateway and E-Machines since Acer bought them up earlier this year (as well as Packard Bell in EU) but of course they don't make printers so I'll hang onto the machines I have that are of 99 vintage or older.

I just replaced a formatter on a P3005 non-network unit today, same 49.C02 error, steadily worse each day and it did have the Toshiba chip under the label. Of course it's outside the serials listed and of course HP blows it off as out of warranty. Got a refurb from Liberty with the ST chip and works fine (so far). Used the magnifier on the SMT Toshiba chip and no bad solder joints noted. Used my hot air soldering/desoldering station and reflowed the solder all around and put it back in - same problem. Flashed the firmware, no change. The Liberty board was put back and works fine.

HP, as mentioned, has turned from the #1 to the worst - only way to bring them to their knees and either put them out of business, or get them to bring quality back and manufacturing back to the US, is to boycott buying their products unless it's a refurbished older unit with a good history, even if that means putting a 4Si or 5Si into use in an office. Maybe not the fastest but no chips on toners and very reliable and cheap to maintain - and lots of spares when it does need work. I'm pushing all my regulars to swear off HP as quick as possible for new purchases and for most they are fed up with HP anyway so it's not hard to convince them.

Happy to report that the formatter I baked in the oven over 2 weeks ago is, and has been working flawlessly ever since. Sometimes I just print things I don't even need printed just to see if it's really working. I hope others have success with this as well.

HP's support has indeed gone down the tubes, but they're not alone. Seems many big companies no longer offer the kind of helpful support they used to. By helpful I mean an actual solution to the problem you are having when you call. These days there's a lot of finger pointing and the "that's not our problem" attitude. I will exhaust every other resource available before breaking down and making the dreaded call.

But I just wanted to report back in to let anyone know that the baking of the formatter has totally solved all of the issues I was having with the 3005.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Anonymous (12/3/09 12:29 AM) reply + / -
This is unrelated to heating boards to fix etc.
My P3005dn board is duff. I have been given a board from a P3005n machine (used) which I have put in.
Obviously the duplex option has gone now. Does anyone know how to get the duplex option back, if indeed it is possible or do I have to put a brand new board in.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by dmzcompute (12/3/09 5:21 AM) reply + / -
It is possible it may never duplex again. The dc controller and formatter contain the information of your model and generally when you replace one of them the other writes the info to the "new" board which has no model information. Since your board is not new it is possible the dc controller has now lost that information. Also you were supposed to wait a full 5 minutes after the printer came to ready to have all the information transferred and then turn the printer off and then back on. If that was not done no information was transferred or only part was and the duplex option would now be gone. Doing it now will have no effect.

I too have a 3005n that was shooting me the 49.2f9d error code, along with various other codes such as Dimm errors and RFU errors. Let me begin by saying that I am a certified HP technician with over twenty years of experience in the printer and copier industry.
At the end of September I replaced the formatter board (Q7848-61006 is the latest incarnation). This particular board came directly from HP. The page count was set to zero, the IP address was set to all zeros, as was the subnet mask and gateway addresses. I programmed all the pertinant info into the printer and was on my way. It lasted about a month.
Last week I get the call that the same printer is giving the same error code. I again ordered a new formatter after updating the firmware (02 . 043 . 1 is the latest version) with no joy. The board shows up the next day (again from HP Direct). I install the board and when I power it on.....49.2f9d! At this point I have not yet plugged the network cable in. This is where it gets hinky.........
I recycle the power, it comes up to ready, I go to program the IP address...and it is already there! Not some random IP, but the exact IP, subnet and gateway addresses! This is for a Bio Med unit in a hospital, and they use a rather unsual set of IP parameters, and it is not on the same network as the rest of the hospital. Not only that, but the page count was exactly the same as it was the month previous!
If I didn`t know better (do I?), I would swear that HP sent me the same board that I sent them the previous month. Alas, I did not make a note of the serial number on the board before I sent it back.
So......this board works for a few hours and starts throwing the code again. I took the replacement board home and baked it in the oven per the recommendations in this thread and reinstalled it this morning. So far, so good. We`ll see what happens.
PartsNow tech support told me that it usually a formatter problem, with the engine controller board being a possible culprit, although it was stated that is was a long shot. Just to be safe, I also ordered a engine controller. I am going to hang on to it for a little while to see where this goes.
I`ll keep everyone posted on this....I`m curious to see how long it lasts before I get the call again.

Jonah

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by dmzcompute (12/8/09 4:45 PM) reply + / -
The reason for the board having the same address is because you waited the full 5 minutes after the printer came to ready. When you follow that procedure which is the correct procedure when replacing a formatter, the information that was also stored on a chip on the dc controller of the printer writes to the new formatter. So they did not send you back the same board, as the information just moved back to the formatter from the dc controller.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Russ Blakeman (12/9/09 6:55 PM) reply + / -
Well for those reading this thread I'll update this a bit. So far it does not matter which chip - Toshiba, Thompson or Samsung - if they start giving DIMM errors, RFU errors, hanging, no display, etc and pushing the engine test button (small hole at the front of the inset where the right cover comes off, after the cover is removed) gives a proper series of lines side to side on the sheet then you have another example of how HP has turned to garbage. You have a bad formatter and no heating in the oven, hitting with a hair dryer, etc will make it work better. Cheap Chinese electronics that go poof after warranty is out so HP can try and compete as the cheapest out there. Not cheap when you have to buy a $307 formatter once a year or replace it with another junker low cost printer every year.

Anyway they are into version 6 of the boards. If you have a non-network USB/parallel it's part number Q7847-61006 ($245 list) and if you have the network version with RJ45 and USB it's Q7848-61006 ($307 list). Why are ASPs telling you no way they will touch it? If they happen to still be an ASP they know HP pays, if they pay, squat and constantly sends bills for unreturned parts and the ASPs have to fax in proof their Louisville parts return house received the junk sent back. Discounts are down to 25% now, if the part even qualifies for discount and even if it's orderable anymore. Then after doing the work properly and sending the parts back and cashing the check (if you are lucky enough to get a check anymore) you still stand the chance of HP doing a charge-back or billing you for what they paid out.

Anyway - if you fix it change the formatter, it's the problem. If you junk it look closely at others like Canon, Brother, Sharp, Xerox, Samsung, Lexmark and even Dell (although made by Samsung, lexmark, etc with Dell's name on it) just not anything with the HP or Comcrap name. Not a single electronic item made today is worth 1/10th of the cost and until China is out of the picture none will be.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Anonymous (12/9/09 7:18 PM) reply + / -
the formatter info write back feature is actually very handy :)

normally when the formatter board failed, you couldn't even do a config print to get the network settings. so this way you wouldn't need to contact the client's IT ppl to reset the network settings. it just works after replacing the formatter board.

i like it, although the first time happened it actually freaked me out too hehe.......

DMZ,

You are correct about the dc controller "exporting" the info to the formatter. Brain cramp on my part.

That being said, suppose for a moment that the information being sent to the new formatter from the dc controller is corrupted. In my particular case, when I replaced the formatter and powered on, I was greeted with the error as soon I tried to print a config page (which was the first thing I did after initialization).

Baking the board failed to work, I found two more incidents in the event log today when I dropped in to check on it.

I already have a new dc controller for it, I am going to put it tomorrow, then upgrade the firmware again.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by dmzcompute (12/13/09 9:16 PM) reply + / -
The problem you have is you can not replace both dc controller and formatter at the same time which is probably the effect you are having since the formatter replacement as i understand it did not take. Actually the way it supposed to work is you wait a full 5 minutes after the printer comes to ready and then you are supposed to turn the printer off and then back on and everything should have transferred. All of that said what is the problem you are having? When you try to print a config page from the information menu what happens? That would be a good starting place. If it does not print and shoots you a code what is it?

Re: Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Jonah Hex (12/17/09 9:33 PM) reply + / -
I replaced the formatter and dc controller at different times.I am not having a problem with data transfer from the dcc to the formatter.
If I wait, it does not change anything. I still get the 49.2f9d code when I try to print a config page. Engine test works just fine. So I know that the problem resides in the formatter, but I am not willing to put another one in it.
I got them the replace it with a HP 4000tn today. REPAIR BY REPLACEMENT, I always say!

HP just issued the service note and like the P2015N it is very limited. It states the issue is only occurring with printer made after 1 Jan 08 so they are extending the warranty 1 year for only those printers. Since the problem goes back at least 4 years they are still not owning up to the problem.

We sold 2 3005 less than 6 months ago, the first one started showing the fomatter failure symptoms, Mem failures, freezups on POST. Ordered formatter from HP, refurb showed up, dropped it in and it wouldn't recognize the memory on the DIMM,or complete POST, DOA. Customer needs printer ASAP, looks like it's going to be delayed another 3 days. Figured I had nothing to loose so I baked the initial board in my Maytag oven, cookie sheet on middle rack, non convect at 350F, 9 minutes. Dropped it back in the printer after cooling and printer is up and running, thanks to this thread and all the fine chefs.

New formatter on the way, i don't know which one to trust more, the baked one or the replacement from HP?

Will now recommend the customer extend the warranty to 3years and plan on replacing printer after it fails off warranty. Will not recommend replacing with HP. We have had a discussion with sales dept. and we will no longer be selling HP printers to businesses.

We are also authorized to do warranty on Brother printers and will start to push them instead. Not sure if they are any better but they CAN'T be any worse than the m2727, p2015, p3005. We are CONSTANTLY doing formatters in these things, obviously poorly engineered and fabbed and HP seems like they refuse to do anything to rectify the problem.

had the same problem, the display showed me error in DIMM 0. so warm plate and remove the chip with a hair dryer. I'm surprised is working, almost immediately crashed ......... now working normally thanks for comment its solutions

I baked 5 bad boards for 8 minutes at 350F. like the man says. I did have to remove the two large capacitors because they were destroyed on my first try. Also tried a heat gun at 800F. aimed directly at the perpetrator chip from 4 inches away and that seems to work also.

I had good luck with a 2015 board, runs fine. :)

I tried baking a 3005 before I saw your post about the capacitors. I did not remove them and they both are split at the top. Do they just pull off (straight up). I assume these are now junk. Where can a get replacement capacitors and how do I remove/install. What about the small back-up battery, looks like that cooked a little too, started to leak.

I followed your instructions and the 2015 works perfectly.

I tried the same technique with the 3005 and the capacitors split at the top, I saw on another post that you should remove the capacitors... Do they pull straight off. Will I have to replace the split ones?

We constantly sell refurbished HP printers to our customers because they are much better than the new ones. We keep several 2300's and 4250/4350's on the shelf. They are much better than any new HP printers you find and more efficient-less costly to run. The jury is still out on the 4014 & 4015. They have not been in service long enough to see if HP screwed up on those too.

Would placing tinfoil over the capacitors prevent the reported problems of blowing or splitting?

Balaraju,

Did you bother to read the many posts here. Most tell you to bake the board in a oven which works. You want and need a solution. Then read the solutions above. Repeating the same question when the answer is above is very frustrating to people trying to help.

the truth of all this is: I enter through er if someone could help and glad if my experience or viewpoints that serve it well as I would like to help me unfortunately do not have all the time he wanted but in the end if I do something else and this in my ability gladly count on it

I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experiences with these problems. I baked a 2015 board and it worked fine for a couple of days and then crapped out again. Obviously I have nothing to lose if I bake it again and it does not work. Sometimes, does this process have to be redone for it to work well?

I baked a few other boards; we have not had a chance to test them.

Hello all. I just "fixed" another 3005 board by baking at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. I had no capacitor problems at all. The machine has been running continuously for 24 hours and we occasionally send a tcp/ip print job to it to make sure its not locked up. so far so great. Every board I have "baked" has been fixed so far, maybe I'm just a great chef !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got a 3005 board to work by baking it at 400 degrees for 5 mins, no cap problems or anything melting.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Crustymarine (2/9/10 12:39 PM) reply + / -
Baking formatter boards is a confirmed solution!

Here is my 2 cents worth. My organization has 60 HP P2015dn units with 16.4% formatter failures, and 34 HP P30005 units with 26.5% formatter failures. More to come I’m sure.

We have repaired and returned to a serviceable condition all but 1 HP p3005 (capacitors popped during baking process, my bad) we now cover the caps with tin foil to protect them from direct heat.

I believe there are two issues here. The need to upgrade the firmware on all units, and also to reflow the solder to correct cold solder joints some place on the formatter boards, not all but most.
First! If you can revive a HP p3005 upgrade the firmware through the LPT connection NOT the USB connection. Then test for “wake up” from sleep modes while connected through LPT and USB. Test each connection for at least 24 hours. If unit fails to maintain connection or wake up without recycling the power, you need to bake the formatter board @360-370 for 7-8 min.

Follow the same steps for the HP p2015dn, obviously only using the USB connection.

Good luck,

I had a similar problem with my HP LaserJet 3005dn. The display was blank or froze during memory count/initialization. At one point, I received a "MEM TEST FAILURE REPLACE DIMM 0".

I tried to troubleshoot this problem using information on www.hp.com. Unfortunately, there was no relevant information. Luckily, I found this discussion thread. I would like to thank all of you who posted responses.

I contacted HP technical support by telephone (800-334-5144) and told them about my problem and that several customers reported similar problems due to a defective formatter board. I provided them with the Service Note DOC #C01215806.

I was instructed to try a "cold reset" by turning off the printer for 10 seconds, turning the printer back on and pushing the green check button during initialization. The printer initialized (this time) and I used the down arrow to select "cold reset". I turned the printer off for 10 seconds and then turned it back on. Once again, the display was blank.

Next, I was instructed to open the plastic right panel of the printer (sliding the right panel backwards) and open the metal door (pull outward). I was instructed to remove the memory chip from the tan plastic clips and then restart the printer. Once again, the display was blank.

I replaced the memory chip and went to www.hp.com and downloaded firmware to correct the formatter board. I downloaded the firmware and installed it. I received a yellow smiling face and turned the printer off for 10 seconds and then turned it back on. Once again, the display was blank.

After all of this, the technical support representative confirmed that the formatter board was defective and provided me with some options for resolving the problem. Ultimately, I decided to bring the printer to a certified HP channel partner to have the part replaced (it was the fastest alternative). The printer was out of the warranty period, but I was provided with an exception and issued a case number. I brought the printer into my local HP channel partner and had the card replaced in 2 business days at no cost. The channel partner had to request the part using the channel partner support network.

I hope that this helps others.

Good luck. The boards from HP do not seem to have this problem resolved. Your new board is just as likely to fail. If you or anyone else is curious about this issue, try going to Answers.com and search ball grid array. This chip technology is explained as well as the good and bad aspects of its use. I am using professionally repaired boards and still have had 2 failures on these repaired boards so far. I have not tried the baking method because I am in a position of being able to replace the formatter boards from various sources. HP's insistence on firmware downloads is a smoke screen in my opinion. Besides, you can't download firmware if your printer won't come to ready.

I don't know that I've ever seen a firmware upgrade from HP resolve any printer problem. I've been working with HP's on a fleet basis for about 8 years.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by opcso (3/3/10 1:50 PM) reply + / -
Right you are, but I got pretty far up the HP food chain and that was their only answer. Poor design of the formatter board, probably one of the few actual HP part on the P3005, was never admitted to.

Ok, Out of curiosity and desperation, I want to try the oven. I popped the side panel of the printer off. The board was made in China (go figure...) anyway, The entire large board goes in or am I missing something? Is something to be popped off and put in? And I assume all plastics get removed..It doesn't work now, the end result can't be any worse.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by moe (3/15/10 11:36 AM) reply + / -
Whole board goes in. Anything that looks like it will melt from the heat comes off. Like you said, there's nothing to lose.

Thanks....I will cook it tonight and post the outcome....

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by anonymous (3/15/10 12:11 PM) reply + / -
I didn't bother to take off any plastic pieces though I did crumple up some aluminum foil to put on the two capacitors (probably not necessary nor effective)as a heat sink on the P3005 board. Suggest you put the chip side facing up so nothing falls off. I put the board on a cookie sheet with covered with aluminum foil at 350 degress for 6 minutes, worked for me with the P2015 formatter and the P3005n formatter. Going to do another batch tonight if I get the chance.

How long do you pre-heat it ?? I know it's a funny question but....I know my oven is set for 5 minutes on the preheat..then I put my things in it. Would you preheat it for the 5 minutes and then put it in for the 6??
Thank You.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by moe (3/15/10 12:41 PM) reply + / -
Pre-heating means the oven gets up to the 350 degrees you set it for. Since different ovens take different amount of times to heat up, we can't tell you how long to preheat it. My oven has a digital read out of the temperatures and goes ding when it reaches the preset temperature. I crumple up some aluminum foil balls and use them to support each corner to keep it off the cookie sheet. If you have a wife, be advised that it does smell up the kitchen some. It doesn't bother me or most guys, but I wait until mine leaves otherwise I hear all the complaining and she opens all the doors and windows and turns the fan on. Fortunately, living in SoCal, I don't have to worry about freezing cold coming in. It is easier to wait until she leaves.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by anonymous (3/15/10 12:49 PM) reply + / -
I intend to preheat but I always give up on waiting after about 2 minutes, maybe 3. My lean is to err on the side of under cooking, I can always put it back in later if it fails. I've also run a heat gun at 750 degrees one inch from the chip for 2 minutes. A component actually fell out of the board I got it so hot so I just soldered it back in. That's why I recommend chip side up, components can't fall upward right? The board worked fine even after this level of torture. Don't sweat it, you've got a bad board anyway. Be careful to use a pot holder and let it cool down just like cookies. By the way, I don't think most but not all boards will respond to this, so it goes.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by opcso (3/15/10 12:57 PM) reply + / -
Read back up this thread, there is plenty of information on this method. You have to at least remove the memory card if one is there. People have had success and some have melted components as you can see. Good luck.

Jonah Hex mentioned ,he printed a configuration page wright after initialization, here is what i recommend i use this in alot of hp products (ex:hp 2015,2430,3005,4200 series) when u replace the formatter board or dc controller u must wait at least 5 minutes after the printer is ready,so the dc controller can copy the information to the formatter board or verso.than turn the machine of then on and print the configuration page, after that u can plug in your conection cables, netw, usb, paralel.i now alol of technicians who had problems replacing formatter board or dc controllers(hp 4250-4350 series sometimes not recognizing the built in network if u don t wait).try it wont hurt.:)

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Anonymous (3/17/10 8:43 AM) reply + / -
Well, Thank You everyone for the helpful information. The board went in at 350 for 6 minutes. It initialized and and continued through the start up process. It immediately printed several print jobs that were held in the memory from before it failed..which I didn't expect. It didn't print anything I sent to it at that moment. I read up above about turning it off and back on after a bit and then connecting the cables. It was late in the day so I waited until the following morning. I connected it and the printer is up and running on my workstation as a local and everyone in the office can print to it over the network - and have had NO ISSUES. I cancelled the service call from our repaireman who was saying the board would have been $265 plus $95 labor.....AMAZING...THANK YOU ALL.
