Death of the HP IIIP

Death of the HP IIIP by Mattster723 (7/19/07 5:06 PM) reply + / -
Well there's no denying the end is nigh . . .at least I think so: toner that works is hard to come buy!

Before I buy my 3rd top accordion jam fix; does anyone have an opinion as to a good home/office successor?

My brother copy/laser is way faster (that's the DCP 7020), but I want a separate laser. Anyone on the Brother 2070N? Or what?

What is upsetting to me is I bought my IIIP *new* and paid "on sale" with tax $1,015 for it. I believe that was the year of 1992. What's funny is that on EBAY I bought the memory and paper feeders I always coveted that cost way to much in the 90's for pennies on the dollar! The sheet feeder was 30 cents, and memory, $1.00!!

Sorry for the rant, I just hate to throw out something that still works (until the toner is totally gone!)! So what's everyone's opinion on a printer with a good output at the same of smaller size that has a 250 sheet feeder, is decent and is not too expensive?

Samsung ML-2510. As fast as the HP, better fuser, feed, and quieter. Cheaper to feed, too. :-)PCRMike

I heard that HP is running a special Promotion, you have to find a toner reseller who knows about it.

Buy any toner cartridge, and trade in a II/III/IIp/IIp/IIISi/4Si and get a free CLJ 1600, or one of the cheap monochrome machines, (I forgot the model number, 10??).

That promotion ended 6/31. The deal was that you had to purchase a toner for the 1022 or a black toner for the 1600 and the printer is free. Of course, there is shipping to pay for on the printer and the reseller doesn't get the refund for the new printer untill the old printer is sent and received from the disposal company. I thought that I would do a favor for the local school district for 12 printers. I now have $3800 plus on my credit card and just back from finding boxes big enought to place 3si's, IIps, LJ3 into for UPS to pick up. Originally I was told that a freight company would pick up and I could just pallatize them. A lot of work and HP is the real winner. Office Depot just sold the 1600's for $99.00!

What about Lexmark's? Anyone have an opinion on them? I think it was the E350d.

The thing that galls me is not so much the machine's cost, its the cost of the toner.

Oh! And the fact that you can't keep a solid working machine forever . . kinda like when I gave in my 1986 Honda Accord (well gave is a strong term) . . . for a new Accord.

But if we all had to choose:

Brother 2070N, Lexmark E350D, the Samsung ML-2510 and the HP 2510, what's the sorta consensus.

Sue,

The Salesman I talked to showed me the deal online and the espiratiopn date was July 31.

Matt,

When you trade in an Accord on another Accord you get a good new car out of the deal. When you trade in an ols HP on a new model...

Stephen,
I checked the website and see that the deadline has indeed been extended to 7/31. Looks like I have more time to source those old printers to be turned in. The problem still is that you must purchase the new printer and then get the rebate check after Market Velocity has received and checked out the old machine.

I still think there should be a party for the demise of the IIIP. Maybe a hand-across-America printer-a-thon or something. . . .

The last time I participated in one of these I sent in about 15 printers to HP. Rules were that they had to print a test print. I went to a bit of trouble to fix them up so they would just barely do a test print (didn't invest in any new parts). They sent the boxes, I packed them up and sent them in. Some time later, I was at a recycler that I bought printers from and I noticed some familiar looking boxes. Sho' enuf' they were the same boxes I sent the printers back in. They never opened them, never looked at them, never tested them. Why would they care if they worked?

I work on quite a few Oki B4000 series.
They have a separate toner cartridge, so you only refill the toner rather than replacing the whole cartridge.

The drum count can be reset on the printer by the user when it reaches end of life.
They do not use any smart chips, so you can just reset the drum counter and carry on printing without replacing the drum.

This was the case on all models upto 4350. I have not seen a 4400 or 4600 yet.
