Dell 1700 strange Paper JAM with Photos and Video by main (5/28/07 3:05 PM) reply + / -
Hello everybody

Thanks already for your helping me and comments.

I have two Dell 1700 Manufactured July, 2004 and June, 2005

The one Manufactured in July 2004 has about 26,000 Pages printed, that is what the Paper Count shows.

Since today, it jams exactly at the same spot, I posted a Video and a few Pictures Links:

I hope this helps you a little bit.

Thanks already for all your posts and replies.

There is an optical sensor on the way of the paper. This sensor recognise the move of a small plastick stick. In my case that was broken. I used glue to repair, but it must be heat resistant. Good luck.

I think anonymous is right in that I didn't see any sensor arm in the photos. I'm not familiar with that model, but most printers use optical sensors at the exit of the fuser assy. This is in the form of a pivoting plastic arm that blocks and unblocks an optical sensor to tell the printer that the paper has exited the fuser assembly. Since you have an identical printer that I assume is working, compare the backs of the fuser assemblies and see if that arm is indeed missing or dislodged on the bad one.

Well, i used to have this problem, we have 70 printers and 8 of them have this little sensor broke. As the same way that anonymous, i have to fix it with glue (in Spain we call it "Super Glue 3") and paper (because i have never find the part of the piece that is broke). When you put Super Glue 3 into a piece of paper, it becomes hard, like the plastic.
I have uploaded this photos, then you can say to me if you need more information. After this, the printer runs perfect!!

Hope this can help you. Bye!

Little known fact: Super Glue and Baking Soda instantly harden on contact into a plastic like substance that can be filed and shaped. The liquid Super Glue works best and you can alternate Baking Soda and Super Glue until you get the approximate shape you want. Then you file or whittle it with a razor blade. If you're really good, the end result can look as good as the original. I color mine with a magic marker when I'm done and you'd have a hard time telling it wasn't real.

Any idea about how long that flag is supposed to be? I am trying to fix one and I have fassioned several makeshift replacement flags and I keep having issues with length or it blocking and hitting the roll feeder.

Re: Dell 1700 strange Paper JAM with Photos and Video by moe (7/28/07 12:26 PM) reply + / -
The flag has to be long enough to go between the 2 poles of the optical sensor. Its function is to block the led from shining on the photocell. I make broken flags, door interlocks all the time with my Dremel tool and superglue or epoxy. I just fashioned one for an HP in our office. I could have replaced it, but it's an hour's work. If it were a customer's it would have been justified.

This is the same problem I am having with one of our printers. However, I can't even figure out how to get the fuser out to check the flag you are talking about. Can someone walk me through this step by step? We've been trying to find someone to fix this stupid printer for about a month now.

Warricj,

I am currently having the same issue with this printer. The way to take it apart is by removing the side and top panels. Then remove the fuser which should have about 3-5 screws on the back. Then take it out as far as you can and turn it to that you are looking at the bottom part of it. There should be a metal plate on each side about the size of .5" x1.5" that are held on by a phillips screw. Remove the screw from each side and take out the fuser gear kit. On the fuser gear kit you will also find another screw that is holding a paper sensor. This sensor is what the printer uses to know if the paper went through the printer or not. Take out that screw and remove the sensor by pulling it down. This should break free the fuser gear kit and then you'll be able to see the plastic piece that the paper goes throug. Its kind of confusing at first but if you work at it you can get it. I strongly recommend that you note down the steps you took to take it apart and make sure you know where the screws go when putting it back together. Also when you take off the plastic piece there is a spring attached to it, make sure you know how to put that back the way it's suppose to.

There should be about 10-14 screws total that you remove from the printer. 3 in the front and 2 on the right side if looking from the back, and about 8-10 on the back.

I don't understand. He has pictures of it on the post you replied to. Did you want us to come over and point it out to you? Lorton, Virginia is a bit far for me, but one of the forum techs (Stephen) lives pretty close to you. I'm sure he would only charge about $100 to come over and point it out to you.
