Dell 3100cn drum cartridge replacement by mf (2/16/07 8:44 AM) reply + / -
My drum cartridge stopped working. There was no warning or printer quality problem. Wondering if there is a way to reset this?

Thanks
michele

Same question. Any luck?

Ditto. My printer is saying "Drum Cartridge, replace soon" but it's printing just fine and the cartridge costs almost as much as the printer! How can I reset the counter??

What I have found so far it that there are a couple of steps that you need to take. One is mechanical and easy to do. The other is electronic and I am still trying to figure it out.

The drum cartridge collects and stores all of the excess toner. It really does fill up. If you look on the sides of the cartridge, on the end that you insert into the printer first, you will notice two caps (one on each side) that are secured with one screw. They have a green arrow on them.

Open one and empty the toner (be careful there will be a lot). Close that side back up and repeat on the other side.

Now look at the middle of that same end of the cartridge. You will see a clear plastic "nipple" that looks something like a Christmas light. When the cartridge is full of toner, it pushes down an opaque piece that evidently blocks light and presumably informs the printer that it is full. There is a small hole in the end of the "nipple". Use a small paper clip and push it back up inside.

If you are lucky, your toner was simply deactivated because it was full and you will now be able to use it again.

If not, it is the result of the "life chip" on the left side of the cartridge. You will see it as a round black plastic disk. Use the tip of a sharp pen knife and pop it out. It appears to be a passive RFID device with antenna. By the way, they are the same devices as are used in the ends of the toner cartridges but they are not programmed the same. This is what I am still trying to circumvent.

The quickest fix is to buy one on eBay for about $15. Still cheaper than a new drum cartridge but it is the principle of the thing.

I cannot stand the idea that a manufacturer can "decide" that we need to spend more money on consumables when the unit is perfectly fine!

The mechanical steps (emptying toner, paperclip) didn't work.
What kind of search word do I have to use on eBAy to find the RFID chip?
Thanks

Frank

I cannot get the old yellow toner cartridge out of my Dell 3100cn! I've followed the directions but I'm afraid to pull too hard and break something. Is there a trick to this that I'm missing? Thank you.

Does anyone know if there is a non-ebay source for this chip in the US?

Broke down & got one off ebay. Worked a charm!

Thanks to this thread I bought the chip for $15 instead of a new drum for my 3100cn. Cleaned the dust, replaced the chip and it appears to be all good!

I don't understand. Am I supposed to buy the chip and empty the cartridge? Isnt' this risking getting toner everywhere?

Re: Dell 3100cn drum cartridge replacement by Anonymous (7/21/08 3:22 PM) reply + / -
the chip of the drum (i.e. not the cartridge) needs to be replaced by a fresh one to prevent the drum having to be discarded way too soon, so there is no need to worry about the cartridge, you can use it until it's empty

Awesome. I emptied out the used toner on both sides of the drum. Popped out the old drum chip, and inserted a new one I got of eBay for $15. Works like a charm.

Thanks folks!

I called www.dubber-toner.com and they no longer carry the drum cartridge chips.

http://www.lasertekservices.com/ does and it was a little more expensive than dubber-toner used to charge, but they have them and can send them.

I had a "Replace Drum Cartridge Soon" message, so I did the take-the-caps-off-dump-toner-all-over-and-poke-the-lightbulb-looking-t hing-with-a-paperclip routine, and the message is still showing up. I thought by doing the deal before actual failurer I could avoid getting a new chip. Do you think I have extended the life at all? How long do you figure before the drum cartridge actually fails? The printer is wanting its toners replaced, and I am wondering if I should bother or just go shopping for a new printer.

What do you think? Thanks for the help.

Re: Dell 3100cn drum cartridge replacement by frankhey (10/26/08 12:31 PM) reply + / -
Only replacing the chip extends the life of your drum cartridge.
I recently replaced the chip in a endoflife-drum cartridge (actualy endoflife-chip). It worked fine, but after a few months black stripes appeared on the printed pages, indicating now the drum cartridge itself (and not only the chip) was defectuous . I removed the chip and put it in another endoflife-drum cartridge I still had here. This is working fine now, with one chip I revitalized two drum cartridges.

I took off the caps and emptied the toner from both ends. I had to replace the life chip (round) and it works great! Thanks to Anonymous for the instructions.

Great thread!

Old toner is easy to remove from the cartridge as per directions above. It is the end-of-life chip that will have to be replaced on 90% of the units. Unless you have printed more than 30,000 pages or in the last 2 yrs. Mine lasted approx 4 yrs so I would venture to say that the chips are a 4 or 5 yr chip based on when I ordered the printer from Dell.

Ordered my chip from:

http://www.tonerrefillstore.com/dell-toner-refill-kits.html

$21.95 shipped to my door.

I just picked up a Dell 3100cn at a church sale for 15 dollars. they wanted 50 dollars for it and I talked them down. I was like I am not sure how long until it needs new toner and thats costly. I brought it home and it works. but it's telling me replace soon cyan toner. I am thinking I should just buy the kit on ebay with the chips for like 92 dollars with free shipping. or does someone know were to buy the kit for less?

Re: Dell 3100cn drum cartridge replacement by Jason1976 (5/19/09 4:20 PM) reply + / -
I just had to order the drum reset chip after I printed off some photos. I wonder if I would of emptied the drum before the black thing in the clear thing was pushed out if it would be saying replace soon. I am wondering if the printer can tell when the black thing is moved into the clear thing and then it tells the printer to only let it work for so long with that chip. they are to do 40k pages at 5% coverage. and the page count on this printer is 9699. not that high. I have an old HP laserjet 4m plus with over 700k pages. I had to replace the gears in the fuser on that unit. It still prints great but I want to print in color. It is a network printer also. I think I will set it up on the floor beside my desk. mostly use it for black and white. the toner on that does 9k pages at 5% coverage and I have seen toners on ebay go for like 9.99 for two and 9.99 shipping. It makes it very low cost prints.

Great advise thanks, however I'm having problems with the opic device thats in the clear thing, I can't seem to get it to go down any trick?

Re: Dell 3100cn drum cartridge replacement by Jason1976 (6/8/09 2:05 AM) reply + / -
after emptying mine it went down on it's own. some say they have to push it back in with a paper clip.

Re: Re: Dell 3100cn drum cartridge replacement by GregBoles (6/20/09 9:00 PM) reply + / -
You wouldn't want to unless you're only printing black. The toner is all colors and there for you'd get poor color and since it's used you'd likely get poor print quality. It could also result in your fuser getting gunked up since the consistency is going to be different as it's getting packed in there pretty tight.

Re: Re: Re: Dell 3100cn drum cartridge replacement by Anonymous (6/21/09 2:30 AM) reply + / -
thats why you have to empty out the used toner.
