STEP BY STEP reset imaging drum Q3964A in HP 2550 by Anonymous (1/16/07 2:23 PM) reply + / -
This is to clarify the procedure to reset the Q3964A imaging drum that is no longer working in Laserjet 2550 2550L 2550Ln. This may be somewhat of a duplicate posting, if so, sorry about that and credit goes to whoever first discovered it. This posting may help some people who were confused about this procedure or wheather it works at all.

As you know, the blinking image light for imaging drum indicates that the drum is at the end of life (according to HP) and the printer will not print. Actually, what it means is that HP is running low on CASH and is expecting you to pay for their next boat payment. The drum is probably plenty useful, and shouldn't you decide when the print quality is no longer acceptable to YOU, instead of some chip inside the cartridge with an arbitrary counter number?

Here is the procedure that will work if performed correctly (it may take several tries because timing of button presses is crucial). This procedure revived completely dead 2550L with flashing imaging drum light.

READ THROUGH THE PROCEDURE BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND IT and KNOW WHAT TO PRESS NEXT BEFORE HAND! Of course, as a standard disclaimer, use at your own risk. You are responsible for the consequences, blah, blah..

1) Ensure that all printer cartridges and the drum are installed

2) Printer - OFF with power button

3) GREEN GO BUTTON - HOLD

4) POWER BUTTON ON

5) The 3 lights above the green GO button and below the red CANCEL button will go ON (in no particular order) and then OFF (this will happen quickly, under 10 seconds, but may vary)

6) AS SOON AS THE 3 LIGHTS ARE OFF - RELEASE GREEN GO BUTTON
(the important thing here is not to miss when all of the three lights turn off and be ready to release the GO button and to proceed with the next step. You may have as little as 5 seconds. If you wait too long some of the lights will go back ON and you will have to start over.)

7) IMMEDIATELY - PRESS AND HOLD RED CANCEL BUTTON

8) IMMEDIATELY - PRESS and HOLD CARTRIDGE SELECTION BUTTON

9) IMMEDIATELY - RELEASE both RED CANCEL BUTTON and CARTRIDGE SELECT BUTTON

That's all she wrote. Hope it helps someone and good luck!

Attempted this several times. It does not work. Waste of bandwidth and time.

To cheat the 2840 image drum just pry the chip off of one of your empty toners and swap it out with the chip from your imaging drum. The printer will recognize it as a "Non HP Supply" and bypass the page count, allowing you to continue to use the drum. The chips are simple to remove, just gently pry one edge up while using moderate pressure. They are held on by double sided tape so just press the new chip in place when the old is removed... Viola!

Hi,

Just a bit of clarification.

6) AS Soon as lights go off - RELEASE GREEN GO BUTTON

IS IT THEN - WHEN YOU HAVE RELEASE GREEN BUTTON (STEP 6)

7) Straight after step 6 - PRESS RED CANCEL BUTTON, CARTRIDGR SELECTION BUTTON Together? Or Press one and release press another and release.?

8) Release both buttons. - How long after? What lights will be off when i should release? How many seconds should the buttons be held before release?

Sorry for the questions above. Just not having any luck in doing this.

Thanks for the help.

Amit

I did this with our printer at work over two months ago and it still prints as good as it always did. It was simple to do and came in handy, especially at the end of our fiscal year when we have to hold off on purchasing supplies.

The most effective method of resetting the imaging drum is to remove the drum and all the cartridges and then replace them all.
It may sound too simple, but it works.
We supply many remanufactured Q3964As and this has proven to be successful in about 95% of cases.

I done it....IVE DONE IT I done it....it worked!!!!!!!!!
I spent all yesterday evening trying various methods and combinations.
Eventually I did it by switching it on, immediately pressing and holding the green/go button down. After a few minites it started whirring like it was going to print something, so I released the green/go button put a sheet of paper in and it printed off something about an error log 'nivram' debug file. I switched it off. Switched it back on, and I printed off a small notebook file just to test it. Hoorah!
Thanks hugely!

Well, thanks a heap for that groundbreaking information on replacing the cartridges and imaging drum. We'll alert the media on that - and find someone less smart a$$ed thank ink4less to buy from.

Anonymous, I'm sorry you took my post the wrong way.

To clarify.

I did not mean to replace the cartridges with new ones. I meant put the existing cartridges and drum back in after taking them out.

So, take your cartridges and drum out, leave them for a short while and put them back in again.

Trust me it works and we have one customer who has 80 of these machines.

By the way we are Ink4less Ltd based in Ireland.
