 | Samsung SCX4100 - faint banding streaks on prints by Haven't got a clue! (9/7/06 2:33 PM) reply | + / - | Hi all,
I have started to get faint banding streaks on prints. The printer has not really been overworked (maybe 2000 prints in total over a year or so).
I have used a refill toner kit twice and the toner cartridge is the original "economy" one that came with the printer (about 1,000 pages capacity).
Last time I refilled it I put too much in and it was getting everywhere, so maybe that's caused the problem?
Anyhow, I'm getting these faint streaks vertically from the top to the bottom. I have read through many posts and have dismantled the printer as much as possible, cleaning everything that I can get to. I used a clean dry cloth to wipe the various rollers, hoovered out as much particles of toner as possible, and also wiped down the glassy looking roller (drum?) in the cartridge. When I manually twist the rollers in the drum, I get lots of toner randomly on the black rollers and the glassy looking (drum?) roller.
This transfers outside of the cartridge, again when manually twisted.
I have put the cartridge back in and tried printing and the faint areas are the same, in exactly the same areas.
Now other than well and truly voiding my warranty (dismantling printer, toner refill kits etc.!), I am surprised that I haven't totally stuffed it up completely. As I really wasn't sure what I was doing or cleaning, that's a relief. However, the streaking continues.
I read once that you can normally only refill the cartridge 2, maybe 3 times before having to replace it. Could this be the problem?
I also wasn't aware that you shouldn't expose the drum to the light as it can ruin it. I know this now having looked into the problems with printers but not when I was putting the toner cartridge (this is what houses the drum right?) in and out trying to remedy the problem. Has overexposure stuffed up the cartridge?
Any help would be greatly received. I'm wary of spening £60 out for a new cartridge, only to find that the problem continues? Especially as I can buy the latest Samsung all in one SCX 4200 for about £120 brand new!!!
Thanks all.

Get a remanufactured cartridge that has a warranty against this type of thing. They are cheaper than the new ones and still get the same amount of pages. When you filled it did you empty the waste hopper? The samsung cartridges are hard to remanufacture. Just go out and buy a remanufactured cartridge and quit refilling your own. The cartridge should get 2,500 pages. Seems you filled your's twice and got less than 2,000. Look at the problems you created by filling your own. Seems to me you paid more for the refill kit and its problems than purchasing a remanufactured cartridge. At least you wouldn't have to clean it.

(9/8/06 7:52 AM) reply | + / - | Well to be honest, I went for a refill option as I felt the cartridges were expensive at £65 each! The refill kit cost about £30 and had enough toner for 20,000 copies. So a simple rule of economics made the decision for me!
The problem with many laser printers is (apparently) that they come with a scaled down version of cartridge - in my case a 1,000 page capacity as opposed to 3,000. When you then go and buy a replacement cartridge, you get the "full" capacity one i.e., 3,000 pages.
As I said, I read somewhere that you can usually only refill a cartridge 2 or 3 times (possibly 4 times) before something goes wrong (not sure if it's to do with the drum wearing out or something - sorry, can't remember the reason). So I always had in mind that at some stage I'd have to buy a full capacity cartridge and then start refilling again after that.
However, as I originally asked, is there any point in going out to buy another cartridge if the printer's stuffed? If it is to do with the cartridge, then I'll happily(?) go and buy another one and then refill again when it runs out. If something more fatal with the printer then I'll go and spend £120 on the SCX4200 and start from scratch!

This coating holds a charge to allow the laser writing/ toner transfer. IT WEARS OUT! It is extremely sensitive to light, so don't expose it for long. Be careful refilling any cartridges more than once. A drum that makes twice yield is getting to be a rarity.

 | Re: Samsung SCX4100 - faint banding streaks on pri by Anonymous (2/20/07 3:07 AM) reply | + / - | I have just revived the "starter" and "standard" toners for my Samsung SCX-4100 all-in-one. Both had been re-filled by me, but started streaking (white lines). I found some build-up of toner on the thin stainless blade that seems to spread the toner thinly on the first roller. Carefully prizing it up and cleaning the edge (with tissue and a craft blade) seemed to fix both toners. Don't know for how long, though...

 | Re: Samsung SCX4100 - faint banding streaks on prints by pcrmike (2/21/07 9:42 AM) reply | + / - | First off, the starter cart only has enough room for about 500 or so pages worth, as the hopper is smaller than the standard. Only on this model. Also, there is no cleaning blade here, but the DV roller will wear out on these, as will the PCR and yes, the toner has a wax in it that will build up on the stainless steel blade. Your instinct is correct that it caused the streaking, and it will fix it temporarily. Good show. We don't sell in GB, but stateside, these are less money. :-)PCRMike

 | Re: Samsung SCX4100 - faint banding streaks on prints by Anonymous (3/2/07 10:53 AM) reply | + / - | I have a Samsung SCX 4200. Vertical banding streaks have started to appear on the prints and are getting gradually more pronounced. When the original (half capacity) cartridge ran out I replaced it with a brand new full price cartridge. It has probably done in the region of 1500 prints with the new cartridge but should do 3000 according to the manufacturer. The only thing I have tried is the clean drum option from the menu. Is there anything else I can do or is this likely to be a faulty cartridge? Claire

 | Re: Samsung SCX4100 - faint banding streaks on prints by pcrmike (3/8/07 9:45 AM) reply | + / - | Likely faulty. If it was kept in a hot enviro, it can cause it. Call 1-800-SAMSUNG and they may replace it. If not, post here, and we will see if we can help. There were soe of these with bad doctor blades. :-)PCRMike

 | Re: Samsung SCX4100 - Light Copies after refilling by Watchwait (3/14/07 6:37 PM) reply | + / - | I have successully refilled the toner on my Samsung SCX-4100, but now all copiedas are light, even after setting the menu to "Dark". I cleaned all rollers when I refilled the toner. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve

 | No Subject by Vinod Kumar (3/20/07 11:47 AM) reply | + / - | Printer shows "no paper" and will not print. The paper tray is full. Any suggestions?

 | Re: Samsung SCX4100 - faint banding streaks on prints by pcrmike (3/23/07 10:36 PM) reply | + / - | There is no waste hopper. As fr the paper switch, it may be bad, but try to stretch the springs under the tray. These can get weak. ;-)PCRMike

 | Re: Samsung SCX4100 - faint banding streaks on prints by Wayne_computers (10/12/07 6:58 AM) reply | + / - | Hi, I bought a second hand printer scx-4100 off ebay, The seller said it had a new cart fitted and also gave me a new boxed cart. When I received the printer I tried it out and the print was streaky, also there was a light band where the text was very light 2 inch wide from top to bottom. I took the heater drum out of the printer and stripped it down and cleaned everything I could even if it looked clean, After putting the machine back together crossed my fingers and tried it out, It made no difference at all, At this point I thought at least I can get some of my money back by selling the other unopened cart and was just about to put it on ebay but decided to try in in the printer and guess what it now prints very good.
I have opened the other cart up which was installed when I got the printer off ebay and it is full, I will tinker with it someday when I can be bothered, At leased I know which is the problem part now.
Hope this helps other users solve there problem.
Wayne.

 | Re: Samsung SCX4100 - faint banding streaks on prints by pcrmike (11/18/07 5:15 PM) reply | + / - | It is the seal blade under the development roller. This is a known issue, and I have the blades coming in. I have already got the blades engineered, just waiting on the manufacture of the parts. We will be replacing these blades from now on in every one of these we remanufacture for the public. :-)PCRMike
