I have a Lexmark Optra T614N with an error message indicating:
900 Service RIP Software
There are no options installed. Master Reset (Power On while holding Right + Select + Go) does not clear the error. Lexmark tells me its either the Controller Board (+$500) or the Engine Board ($166) or maybe even the Interconnect Board. Of course, its 1 month out of warranty. My old Optra R+ ran for years and years without trouble.
The archive here says to replace the 'system board', which one is that? I've also read here that I may be able to send the printer new RIP software. Any clues/leads on how to do that?
Any alternate sources for the parts other than Lexmark? Thanks!

Didn't take long to pull the old one and pop in the new one... The config ID needs to be re-entered at the operator panel after the swap.
Apparently, this board is a common failure on the Lexmark Optra T series. The pricks at Lexmark refused to offer me warranty service, and wanted an exhorbitant fee to fix the printer (almost $600!). I'll have to consider whether or not I'll continue to do business with them...

I followed the instruction, but when I did " COPY 7892B25L.PJL >LPT1: /b" it gave me an error message like "file cannot be copied onto itself". Any help? Thanks.

I have been getting the 900 Service RIP Software error on the Optra t614 at work for about two weeks. I have flashed it using the drivers available at lexmark.com, and the Markvision software. I am still getting the error. I will try using the method described here to flash it again tomorrow. The error only happens when it is being printed to. And not always either. It happens on an almost random basis.
So, how can I diagnose with some degree of certainty wether it is the RIP board, the engine Board, or the "System" board that needs to be replaced?

Hi everyone here is a proposition to solve the problem : To download the needed file you need to go to the following website : http://support.lexmark.com choose your printer and select the icon of firmware and you should find the update file need to eliminate the 900error and even the invalid engine code for all printers in not you should consulte the following web site : http://support.lexmark.com/printerfirmware/ for the engine code and mother board ( base code ) Engine Code 78.94 : optrateng Base Code 532.09 : 53209bc This file is for the optra serie ( T61x )
hope that everyone will have the oppertunity to download the needed file to solve the problem

if you are geting the 900 error frequently you should verify the level of firmware ( engine and base code ) in you printer and update it to the latest version : http://support.lexmark.com if this doesnt solve the problem then you should verify the type of files that are printed. you can also try to reinstall the latest driver for the printer this should also solve the problem.

This is a common problem that i see at least once per week working as a field service engineer. The first plan of action is to try the firmware reflash and a lot of the time this will solve the problem. In other cases it will only fix the problem for a few mins and in this case the only fix is to replace the RIP board which is extremely costly and often can end up with the same problem. The other option is to buy a refurbished printer which can work out just as cheep as a new RIP board. The other major problems with the 612 614 and 616n printers is the network card failing giving a 54 std network software error. This can also be reflashed but in the majority of the cases the RIP board will also need to be replaced as the network card is built in.

Actually, there is a cheaper solution. Just take the network card out and hook the printer up to a print server via the parralel connection. This is how I ended up solving the problem I was having with the printer. And the print server I used had a price tag of about $20.

The network is built onto the rip board so i do not know how it would be removed. I have tried also adding an additional network card N2000 which will work but the printer will still give the 54 error on startup for the onboard card.

Give me a website, then I will upload the all lexmark and others firmware files, onec you have your firmware extracted to your local folder then you can use LPT cable or USB(if your printer have one) cable to flash
sometimes printer will keep saying invalid engine code and will not allow your to upload(flash) the engine
here is what you do in that case Turn off the power, now wait 5 sec. alright use your left hand hold the right menubutton, selectbutton, and ReturnButton this will force the printer to enter a boot wait mode (means wait for the firmware)
if you have any lexmark printer or printers send me here, we fix them all (with a nice price tag)
setting up a smail repair shop, I don't have a website yet feel free to email hondaup@lycos.com

I found the advice on Nov 22, 2006 and then searched for a parallel printer cable. We have been running the printer through the ethernet port and I didn't want to ftp it if at all possible.
I followed your instructions exactly.
The printer is now working like a charm.

Here is what I have learned about Lexmark Optra T The part number for these is 4069-XXX, where XXX is your specific model. There are differences, for example the T614n is 41e (has built in Ethernet and Centronics parallel).
Anyway, the Lexmark firmware compatibility guides you to the printer model. In my case this was wrong. Actually you are updating the firmware for the embedded MarkNet Printserver. Here the Lexmark info is also not accurate. You need to find the firmware with the same file extension as on your printer.
The latest firmware for the printer model won't work. There is different firmware for the ethernet or parallel port connection, too.
Finally, my firmware upgrade did not help, so I am going to have to replace the hardware board. Lexmark charges $585 for this part !!! I found a used one for about $60, I'm taking my chances.

I had the same problem, and it solved by reconnecting web cable from the point, and applying default factory settings.{before that, remove memory card and IPDS card}.

C510 931 error normally means a problem with the printhead... but C510 is a pretty cheap machine, and errors do sometimes come up for unrelated issues. I suggest you make sure the firmware is up to date and then make sure the photodev cart is in good condition... The photodev causes most issues with that machine.... the green belt often gets scored on the edge where the sensor is meant to pick up the homing position...

Just in case someone else Googles this error and finds this thread like I did:
I had the problem happening on both an IBM Infoprint 1140 (rebranded Lexmark) and another Lexmark printer.
This error pops up when someone prints off of an AS400 or an ISeries and then someone else immediately tries to print from Windows.
The Iseries driver doesnt let go of the printer immediately, so the windows print job runs into a snag and eventually bails out with this error message.
Cycling the power was the only way for me to get rid of the error. It's only happened once in 5 years, so I'm calling this a victory.
I am using the latest Windows driver as well.

Just adding my 2cents worth to Fake Names post. Be sure you cancel the offending print job or you will not be able to reboot without the error. IF not sure which computer the print job is on unplug the network cable from the printer then power off and back on. Look for the print folder on one of the computers with and error printing message, cancel the job and plug in the cable. FYI we have seen this error when someone tries to print a PDF file scanned from certain copiers. If problem is a PDF file click on the advanced tab and check mark print as image. This has worked every time.

The network card (separate or integrated) can sometimes cause these errors. It has it's own separate NVRAM, and can be reset separately.
You will lose all your network settings, of course, so print a network settings page first.
* Power cycle, sometimes this doesn't work after the printer has been on for a while. Disconnect the Network cable as well. * Menu to Network Menu, select. * should see "Network Option 1" or "STD Network." Select. * Menu to "Network 1 Setup" or "STD Network Setup", select. * Display should show: STD Network Setup PRINT * Press AND HOLD GO, and hit Menu. You'll see "SE Menu." Voila! Secret menu! (...um, you can let go of the Go button now...) * Menu to NVRAM, select. * Menu to "Reinit NVRAM," select. * The printer will go back to ready as if nothing happened. * Print another network settings page. * WAIT! Go raid the fridge or something. The settings page won't come out until the printer is done with the write process, and it can take several minutes, so DO NOT TURN IT OFF.
* When the settings page comes out, you're done and can start configuring or first just plug it back into the network to config by DHCP first - a nice trick to pick up most of the settings for the local subnet.
Enjoy,
TC

My T610 scanner is flashing 6 times and I thought I would try to reflash the firmware onto the printer. I had a similar (maybe the exact same) problem three or four years ago and was told that was what I needed to do. It worked then.
So far, I have downloaded the OPTRATENG zip file onto my computer notepad and I have a parallel cable connecting my computer to the printer. But, I've forgotten how to flash it to the T610. What do I do now?

the firmware flash is like a bandaid for lexmark nvram chips lexmark uses two different chips one that fails seldom and another that has a read write corruption problem. i work for a company and we support better than 60k in the field. we quit using the flash altogether because it is not reliable we replace the nvram chips and the eprom on the engine boards to fix these problems.you will notice even if you flash these chips sometimes they will take the flash somtimes not.it might bandaid it for a day a munute or a year but here is something that you will notice about the operation of those boards after being flashed. you will experiance paper jams more frequently, lockups after time spent idle.900 rip errors. scanners loosing lock error, and intermitten print quality problems.there are others but a corrupted nvram chip is just that corrupted. oh yes the make of the chip the one that failes freqently is the atmel chip the other that very few fail is a amd chip.i hope that your having this kowledge may just help save yourself some time and frustration.have a great year guys
