 | Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by dilutedreform (2/26/06 6:47 PM) reply | + / - | Hi, I recently aquired a Samsung CLP-500. I got it free with full toner cartridges and was told it needed a little work. I have gotten everything fixed and working after a few days except the last message that is coming up, "Waste Toner Tank Full/Not Install." I have followed the guides on how to clean the waste toner tank and it is clear as can be. That led me to the next logical thing, checking the sensor itself. It turns out that the sensor has just gone bad. I verified this by manually moving the black lever that covers the sensor (and covering the waste toner release wheels). Even after this, with nothing obstructing the sensor, it still has the error. Once in awhile the printer will say "Ready" for a few seconds then goes back to the error message. Mainly what I'm wondering is if anyone has found a place to buy a new sensor or if anyone has a new one they are willing to sell. I would try Samsung, but the warranty on the printer is no longer effective and I don't have the receipts for the printer anyways. Please let me know of a place to pick up on of these sensors as I would really love to get this printer working. Thanks, Jeff

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by dilutedreform (2/26/06 7:46 PM) reply | + / - | Hi again, I found a place that sells a bunch of sensors for the CLP series printers but they aren't very descriptive about them. The do, however, give part numbers for all products they have so I was wondering if anyone has a service manual that has the part number for this printer listed? Also, I did do a little more fooling around and found it's definitely the sensor, if you shine a flashlight on it, it goes to Ready and stays in Ready mode until you move the flashlight away. Thanks, Jeff
Note: I know some forums frown on double posting, but I didn't see an edit button, I may just be blind so please forgive me.

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replaceme by Anonymous (3/14/06 12:21 PM) reply | + / - | I've just had the same problem. The toner sensor is on the right as you look at the panel just below the LCD (the big door thingy). Anyway there is a bump in the clear plastic (just below the circular right vent port - for the used toner to pour into). I found that when you clean out the toner cartridge there is some residue left that makes the sensor think it's still full. I actually cleaned mine out with a strong vaccuum cleaner). Anyway, all you need to do is get a piece of kitchen paper towel and a bent coat hanger and clean the inside of the sensor window (inside the used toner cartridge - w/ access through the toner port). It looks like a little raised groove on the right. Just wipe it until it's clear on the inside. BINGO - the sensor can now see through the window and you should be ok.

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by Anonymous (5/7/06 2:56 PM) reply | + / - | Actually just dumping the toner in your vacuum or garbage is REALLY stupid since it is toxic to the environment and needs to be taken care of in a more responsible manner. Its ONLY $20 bucks for christ sakes!
As for fixing the problem EASY. You simply cut the jutting area (as cleaning it is a temporary fix) and carefully seal the open hole with a strong adhesive (duct tape will work). Now the lasers read a clean tank all the time and youy can get your full$20 worth of tank. DO NOT THROW THE STUFF IN A NORMAL GARBAGE PEOPLE!!!

what you explain is exactly what I did more than a year ago.
But as of today, it does not work anymore.
Do I need to change my sensor? If yes, anyone a clue what the part number is? I am in Switzerland!

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by pcrmike (5/12/06 12:52 PM) reply | + / - | Yes, you should replace the sensor as it is a known weak area on these. The part # for the upgraded part is JC96-02796A. This is how to fix it right! :-) PCRMike

 | Re: Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by Anonymous (5/14/06 12:33 PM) reply | + / - | I concur. I have independently and sucessfully removed the intruding plastic of the waste toner compartment and sealed the removed area. I used a Dremel high speed drill (30,000 rpm) and a special cutter to remove the offending plastic in seconds. Then I resealed using tape.
As far as I can determine, the problems is that the infra red emitter is degrading with time and this is coupled with the cadmium sulphide sensor degrading also, due to toner dust. The degradation of the emitter is I suspect, a design flaw.
Once I completed this I have had no further problems - you just need to check the waste toner bin occasionally to make sure it is not full.
This simple procedure will help to avoid scrapping off what is a perfectly good printer!

I have the Samsung CLP500 - I fixed my problem by removing the black lever (pulling it off by hand) which is blocking the sensor. I also cleaned the area with my finger - and reinstalled the waste toner cartridge. Seems to be working fine now.

Recently there is a horrendous noise after printing about 40-50 sheets of paper. It sounds like a fan motor or something similar. Can anyone tell me where to get schematics so I can safely take it apart and look at the unit more closely? Any help is appreciated.

You are in the right section, but it must be PN# JC96-02796A. The description given is as follows: ELA-UNIT-TONER SENSOR. The part listed there as the "CLP-500 Sensor" may be it, and if so 9.95 is a good price. The part you found for a buck ninety-five is the clip that holds the waste bottle in place. Good link though, if it is legit, that is a good price. :-) PCRMike

Tried everything that I could - cleaning then replacing the Waste toner bin, but still no joy. I ran out of patience, left it in the corner for past six months and hooked up another printer...then I came across this string thru google. Anyways thought about your comment re disabling the sensor altogether and decided to take the machine apart to get at it. I took the sensor out of its housing, brought it over to it's 'partner' on the other side of the the housing, cleaned both, stuck them on to a piece of hard plastic, facing each other nose to nose and taped up the the improvised housing. Put it all back together and its perfect. Took me an hour or so but happy as kid with a new toy. No cost in parts or service just my time. Thanks to all above for the thoughts and ideas, esp the guy 'pcrmike' who seems to help all so willingly on this site.

Novac, You can remove it by simply pulling it out, but it will not run. Now, If you want to simply snip snip and remove the sensor, you must twist eth pairs of wires together. In other words, take the red and blue from one side and tie them together, then the red and blue of the other side together and have two pigtails, do not join the two pairs. The red is 24V and the blue is GND. Simple, yes? :-)PCRMike

 | Re: Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Repla by Anonymous (11/15/06 8:32 PM) reply | + / - | Do you have any specific references suggesting that toner is an environmental problem? I just took a look for MSDS available for toner, and it looks relatively harmless. Mostly water and glycerol, or wax, with some relatively innocent organic pigment. The sheets don't specify any particular problem with disposal, or that it is subject to TSCA regulations.

Just found this forum ..... I see that all my brothers and sister are having the same problems as I am. So just to catch up with everyone ..... Correct me if I am wrong.
There will be a red and a blue wire on the left side and on the right.
I get to the red and blue wires on the left and pigtail them together, same thing on the right side. Is this correct?
After that I will need to do the modification to the waste toner tank. Is this correct?
Last question - how do I get to the wires?
Thank you for your help !!

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by pcrmike (11/29/06 7:06 AM) reply | + / - | That is the trick. It is right behind the cover, inside, behind the tank. It is a bit of a pain to get into, but after removing the tank, there are some screws in that cover, remove them, and the ones holding the darker grey "horseshoe" panel with the display. Removal of this panel takes a bit of prodding and prying, but it will move. there are the wires. Tie them together like that, and no mods to the tank are then needed, just check it at every toner replacement and from time to time, or it will back up and cause a "waste toner motor" error. Good luck. :-)PCRMike

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by Anonymous (12/13/06 10:16 AM) reply | + / - | Yes, I can get you that sensor. Second thing, the waste toner plastic sometimes yellows or turns dark and thus makes the sensor work a little flaky. So when the sensor is bad I recommend replacing the waste toner sensor and the toner tank at the same time. Also you can put a piece of tape across the area where the toner is read by the sensor so that it does not get dirty. There is a little slot that you block out so the toner falls across the tape and not thru the sensing area. But you can do what you need to do.
If you still need the part drop me a note and I will go through the process of getting the price on the part (sensor)and your shipping address if you want.
I have seen this problem many times.
Good Luck, Rex

 | Re: Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by Anonymous (3/4/07 12:58 PM) reply | + / - | Hooray! Works like a champ! I just removed the sensors and twisted the opposite pairs together. There's two sensors. Just snipe the wires leading to each of them and then pair the wires from opposite sides with the opposite colors (red to blue) and you're good to go. I just saved myself from having to buy a new laser. To get at the sensor you have to remove the waste toner cartridge and then unscrew the side panel and the sensor cover. I would try removing the sensor cover first and see if your able to pair the wires. If not then remove the entire side panel to pair the wires. There should be about six small screws holding on the side panel.

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replaceme by Sangraal (3/26/07 10:26 AM) reply | + / - | Twisting the wires together works like a charm.
What you need: - Wire clippers, and strippers. - some electrical tape. - A phillips screw driver.
This is how I did it:
1) Open front cover. Remove all the screws that hold the door and the front light grey panel on. It helps to remove the paper drawer. Once all the front screws are off there are still two that hold the darker grey plastic mount that holds the LCD display.
2) Open the top of the printer, You'll see one of the screws (the top left one). The top right screw is a bit harder to get at. You need to remove the top left plastic over, there are two slightly larger screws to remove and then it pivots to the left and snaps off. Then you can get at the LCD panels top left screw... which is the last one.
3) Now carefully remove the whole front of the printer, LCD panel and all, there are two snaps on the bottom of the printer holding it on, you can jimmy it off with a bit of care. The LCD panel has a wire that connects to the body of the printer, it's got a little plastic connecting plug, just unplug it with a slight tug, and the front is now free.
4) Now you can freely access the sensor block... pull off the black plastic housing, the one with the screw in the middle (which you removed in step 1). You'll notice two wires running into each side, one red and one blue. Apparently these LED's aren't strong enough to read through a clean toner tank, which is what causes the problem.
5) Take some wire clippers and snip the wires close to the LED assembly. Strip the ends of the wires, and twist the red from one side to the blue of the other, and vice versa. This is an important step, if you get it wrong the printer won't work and you'll need to take it apart again to get it right. Secure the twisted wires with some electrical tape to ensure there are no short circuits, and voila it's done. NOTE: The wires are fed through some guides in the front of the printer, you may want to unfeed them and work with them where they exit the top of the printer, this way you'll have more wire slack to work with. It'll also keep the ends of the wires away from any rotating parts when you put the thing back together. I secured the wires to the body with a bit of tape to keep them from wandering.
6) Put the thing back together and turn on the printer, the waste toner tank full message should be gone, and all should be good.
The hardest part about this whole process is just getting the printer apart because you need to be careful to get all the screws. The whole thing from start to finish takes about 30 mins. It would take about 10 minutes if I had to do it a second time...

 | Re: Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replaceme by Anonymous (3/28/07 1:56 PM) reply | + / - | Right on the mark - wish I read it before wasting time disassembling the printer. Some things I noted - bottom righthand most screw holding grey side panel in place is best accessed by the gap underneath after the paper tray is removed. On mine, the cable to the LCD was long enough to lay the grey side panel on top of the printer without removing the cable from the LCD.

The hardest part was to find the connector where the four leads go to. After a "serious" dismantling session I was able to find it underneath the same coverplate as the extra memory bank (in the top left corner with a marking "waste toner something..."). Actually the sideplate of the printer is even easier to take off on this side than on the other.

This is nice an quick and doesn't involve any wire cutting, twisting or soldering.

 | Re: Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Repla by Jon Amster (4/20/07 6:49 AM) reply | + / - | Actually, shorting the wires is simpler than described in this posting. You only need to short the wires on the receiver part of the sensor. This is the device on the right side of the panel. It is painted black, and is marked "Sensor-RX" (for "sensor receive") on the PC board on which it is mounted. Snip the red and blue wires that go to this component, strip them back an inch, and twist the conductors together. This bypasses the phototransistor which acts like an open switch until it senses infrared light from the bulb on the other half of the sensor, when it acts like a closed switch.
The device on the left, marked "Sensor-TX" ("sensor transmit")is the infrared emitting diode. Shorting its leads accomplishes nothing. The printer feedback electronics checks the condition of the toner waste cartridge merely looks at the open vs. closed condition of the Sensor-RX side of the circuit.

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by Anonymous (7/5/07 5:34 AM) reply | + / - | Many thanks to all - excellent advice.
In my opinion by far the quickest and easiest way to disable the sensor is as follows; this avoids having to remove the front cover.
(1) Unclip and remove the small plastic access panel on the side to the left of the mains and data connectors.
(2) Remove the metal cover (two cross-head screws) now revealed - this gives you access to the motherboard.
(3) At the TOP of the motherboard is a row of white connectors. The second connector from the left terminates the wires coming from the waste toner detector assembly. It has two red and two blue wires coming out of it, and is marked (above, so hard to see) 'waste toner'. The left hand pair of wires goes to the infra-red transmitter, and the right hand pair goes to the sensor.
(4) To disable the sensor, simply short together pins 3 and 4 of this connector - i.e. the right hand pair of wires. I did this by pushing a short jumper (e.g. cut from a paperclip) into the back of the plug alongside the wires. You could equally well cut the right hand pair of wires and twist them together where they come out of the plug. I'd recommend leaving the left hand pair of wires alone though you could disconnect them if you like since the IR transmitter is no longer needed.
(5) Replace metal and plastic covers, et voilá!

One "lesson learned" for idiots like me -- he says to disable that you can twist the wires coming OUT of the plug. I messed up and cut them going in, then twisted them together. | Re: Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by Anonymous (7/14/07 9:04 AM) reply | + / - | That was quick. Seems the best way. Tools, phillips screwdriver (for + screws), staple. Turn off printer first. I had to turn the printer around as this panel is opposite where the waste toner tank is. The plastic cover is obvious. 2 screws to remove the metal cover (the bulging out part that goes around where extra memory goes is to the bottom. Touching this metal part should clear excessive static charge you may be carrying. There are 3 connectors and the farthest right one is the one to disconnect. I used a bent staple and stuck it in the connector that I could now move around as it was at the end of the two wires. Inserted staple. Stuck this connector still attached to the 2 wires back in, I put it between the other 2 wire pair to kind of hold it in place. Turned printer on. The same message came up for 1 second then went away. Printer working. Turn off printer, replace the 2 covers, spin printer back around. Done.

Took less time and hassle and ended up costing less overall. I also still have the original printer for replacement parts.

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by angD (10/29/07 2:28 PM) reply | + / - | Well my first problem I couldn't even tell you. A Samsung tech had me ship it to CA. They shipped a refurbished, different one back to me and didn't even tell me what the problem was. It was probably 1 year old at the time. I've had to replace the Image Transfer unit, the OPC drum and just small, annoying things that required a lot of attention. It's been Okay now that it doesn't get used as much...until now. Oh, a few times it would just overheat and stop printing. I didn't think I would have as many problems as I did when spending $550 on this printer 4 yrs ago.
Thanks for your help.

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replaceme by racingcows (11/2/07 9:55 PM) reply | + / - | I had a waste toner motor error on my 510 and all I did was take a vacuum cleaner and pressed it against the 2 outlets for the waste toner to open them and sucked. It cleaned out the tubes and the error went away. I am currently trying to get rid of the stupid waste toner error and found that on a 10 the waste toner connector has 6 wires in it. I have no clue which ones to short so i may just have to take the other side apart. If I figure it out, I will reply again.

 | Samsung CLP-300 Series - Waste Toner Replacement by fieldplay (11/6/07 11:11 PM) reply | + / - | This forum rocks. I have the Samsung CLP-300N which had a waste toner cartridge that indicated full when it was not because of it getting jostled in the back of a car during an apartment move. Took a few q-tips to clean the transparent windows of the waste container, noted the position of the sensor on the left hand side of the inner wall of the printer when the laser carriage is removed, put it all back in, light went from red to green on the LCD. Recommend installing the Smart Panel software free from the Samsung site which tells you what the problem is and then tells you afterwards that everything is ok. Cleaning the waste toner cartridge is not a big deal so long as you keep the waste isolated where it can be disposed of properly. Keep kleenex tissue and q-tips around afterwards. Took me 5 minutes. Thanks guys.

 | Re: Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replaceme by Anonymous (12/3/07 7:43 AM) reply | + / - | I just shorted the red and blue wires together, put everything back into place, and it all seems to be working, now, albeit we now have no warning when the toner cartridge is full. Sure beats needing to print something RIGHT NOW and staring bleakly at the waste toner cartridge full/not installed message.

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replaceme by peter.house@centrics (12/4/07 5:47 AM) reply | + / - | I had the same sensor problems as most on this thread and fixed it first by modifying the waste toner bin and then when it finally failed by shorting the sensor Receive wires at the end of the wiring harness where they enter the connector on the rear of the printer.
I recently had the "Waste Toner Motor Error". After following the suggestion in this thread to vacuum the two discharge holes where they enter the waste toner container the printer is now working again. Apparently the blower or sensor inside the unit gets clogged. I am sure glad I didn't have to disassemble the unit.
Thanks to all who contributed.

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by anonymous (2/5/08 2:59 PM) reply | + / - | "Waste Toner Tank Full/Not Install" warning and yellow light came on !! I played with it for a while. "cleaning" the tank, dumping out content and 'washing' it out helped for a while. I have tried taking out the black plastic tab, therefore 'unblocking' the sensor, etc. I finally find out that all I have to do is to clean the small outpouching 'lip' of the tank where the sensor light pass through on the right hand side inferior to the round inlet. This will let enough light through, letting the machine think that the toner tank is not full or1a 'new' tank has been installed. Try it. It worked for me !

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by zinner (4/6/08 10:17 AM) reply | + / - | Here is the fix to the "Waste Toner Tank Full/Not Install" issue. Forget the sensor fix, becuase the problem will always come back. What is going on, is the sensor mistakes the filming plastic of the Toner waste tray, with a full Toner waste tray. My fix that works great is to cut way the plactic area that the sensor is trying to see through, this solved my problem. NO MORE "Waste Toner Tank Full/Not Install" ERROR. I used a hack saw to cut away the area. Good luck.

To give you guys an update, I originally properly replaced the sensor with a new one. It had failed in about 2 months time as well so I ended up doing the same thing as zinner, just cutting out the part the sensor sees through with a dremel. Took about five minutes and it's been working fine ever since. You just have to remember to check the waste toner tray every 1000 pages or so.

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by PC_Repairist (8/10/09 10:21 AM) reply | + / - | Just a quick note to y'all about vacuuming toner.
Toner is brilliant at conducting electricity to the point where it is fit for purpose - i.e. your printer staticly charges it in order to jump from the drum to the paper before being heated on to the paper through the final roller...
So if you vacuum up a lot of Toner as it moves through the air rubbing on the plastics of your hoover it generates a static charge and is likely to explode your hoover motor. This is why you can buy proper PC repair/toner vacuums with anti-static nozzles.
Just a thought, would be a shame to repair a $20 problem with at $100 hoover. :P

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replaceme by jimlongo (9/28/09 11:42 AM) reply | + / - | Two posts from people who seem to know something regarding the toxicity of toner. Personally I think the environmental impact comes from the plastic that toner cartridges and waste tanks represent.
== Photocopier/Laser Printer Toners -Irritant, Flammable
Although dry and liquid toners for photocopy machines and laser printers contain chemicals such as carbon black and resins that have the potential to harm at high concentration, they are normally contained and do not represent a significant hazard. Prolonged exposure to toner powder or vapors may cause eye and/or respiratory irritation and should be avoided. Having disposable gloves available may be a good precaution when handling the toner cartridges. Also, it is important to remember to turn off the power supply or unplug the machine when anyone is servicing the equipment.
Many photocopy machines and laser printers produce small quantities of ozone as a by-product of the copying process. This toxic gas, which has a pungent sweet odor, can irritate the eyes, nose and/or throat. Check with the manufacturer to see if your photocopier or laser printer is equipped with an ozone filter.
The best protection when using copy machine or laser printer products involves good ventilation, avoiding skin and eye contact, and using the products according to the manufacturer's recommendations as written on the label or in the MSDS.
AND
== Conceivably you could get black lung if you inhaled sufficient amounts of black toner over time but that's unlikely even in a test lab like plinth mentioned. There will be other additives, like resins and magnetic compounds (depends on the system, not all use magnetism) so your precautions are probably sufficient. Colored toners will have slightly different chemical compositions, so check the manufacturer's docs for their recommendations.
Your best bet is to use cold water when washing (including clothes) since toner is intended to melt (that's how it adheres to the paper) and may bind to skin and fabrics if you use hot water.
Perhaps the biggest danger with toner is a "tribo explosion" as a result of static electricity. But you usually need a fairly large and concentrated toner cloud, so this is more a toner plant problem than one you'll encounter in a office setting.
I would be more concerned about the ozone, as it causes headaches in most people, even with minor exposure. Ventilation is the key, of course. Even printers with ozone filters will have some, though at reduced levels.
I work at a big printer company and I've been on a couple of product development teams, so I've had first hand experience with toner and ozone.

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by Anonymous (12/1/09 2:35 PM) reply | + / - | I have the CLP-500. I have experienced the same problem with the waste toner container.
I also have a problem with white dots showing up in a black field. If I have a large black area (an area just solid black, as in a picture), a series of white dots show up. The dots do not show up in any other solid color area.
Anyone have an idea?

 | Re: Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement by Kenbobb (12/2/10 10:56 AM) reply | + / - | Just want to repeat this method, since it worked for me, is easy and cheap. Thanks, Anonymous!
>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I stripped the ends of a small piece of solid network wire to make my jumper and simply inserted into the clips. Worked great.
Someone else said they put a jumper from a CD Drive (or a motherboard pin jumper--they're everywhere) on the two pins sticking out of the motherboard after removing the plug. Either way should work fine.
Just remember to check (and empty) your waste toner bin whenever you replace the cartidges. You're good to go permanently.
Toner is messy, not toxic, so dump it carefully, and I wet it down with a little window glass cleaner to keep it from floating out of the waste can when I drop in other stuff. Since the sensor is disabled, you don't have to clean out every bit from the tank, which makes dumping a lot less of a pain.
Thanks again, Anonymous!!
