 | HP LaserJet 2200d paper feed by toddtone (2/4/06 3:26 PM) reply | + / - | The 2200d boots up normally everytime. Has been printing fine. Now, when trying to print from the default cassette, the "grabber" tries to pick up and deliver the paper - sounds like it tries twice - it quits, and then the triangle (top) light blinks amber. I hear a kind of rattling sound as the "grabber" tries to deliver, but nothing grinding or even significantly out of the ordinary.
Manual paper feed works perfectly.
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

Thanks again.

You will see the pickup roller and next to it a black flag hanging down. Try the test again and this time push the flag up so the printer thinks paper is in the tray. Now when the cycle begins watch the roller and see if it makes a complete turn. My hunch is it will. If so your roller may be worn and needs to be replaced. You can try to clean it with soap and water and if you are mechanically inclined it is possible to move the rubber on the roller a little at a time unitl fresh rubber is in place to pickup the paper. If when you have the paper tray in the printer and it jams and you open the tray and the paper has started its way up and you have to pull it down to clear the jam, then it is possible the paper pickup assembly itself is bad. There is an additional roller assembly above which you can not see which sometimes goes bad. First course is the actual pickup roller itself. If the roller does not turn, then remove the toner cartridge and turn the printer over and look at the roller and shaft which it fits into. Make sure it is secure and has not come loose. If the shaft itself is loose, email me with the link above and I will email you the service manual since in order to secure it again you will have to remove all the covers, formatter and gear train. Lots of items to come off, but really not that difficult.

 | Re: HP LaserJet 2200d paper feed by toddtone (2/4/06 4:46 PM) reply | + / - | Hmmmm. In the "flag" test, the roller doesn't appear to be turning at all. In fact, it seems to be resitant to turning at all. The slightest bit of pressure from my finger on the roller initiates a "grinding" and "clicking" noise. The roller itself does not appear to be worn...would expect that it could pick up paper.
I'll remove the toner cassette and inspect.
Thanks for your quick response!

I removed the toner, and the roller and shaft appear to be secure. Nothing loose that I can identify.
As mentioned previously, it does not appear that the roller located next to the flag turns at all when the unit is activated.
Thanks again for your help.

 | Re: HP LaserJet 2200d paper feed by dmzcompute (2/5/06 8:36 AM) reply | + / - | From your description it appears the selenoid which releases the roller in order for it to turn is not working. It can be a number of things which make this happen. One could be the selenoid is defective. Another is the cable which connects the selenoid to the engine control board is bad and there is also the possiblity the engine control board is bad. As a bit of explanation on the how the system works so you know better what is happening and what to look for. The roller is connected to a shaft which is connect to a cam which has a cut out and is prevented from moving by a metal post of the selenoid which rests in the cut out. When a print job is sent, the engine control board energizes the selenoid which makes the rod move to the center of the selenoid with magnetism. As soon as the cam starts to turn the selenoid losses its power and the bar rests against the cam unitl it hits the cut out and then stops the roller. The only way for the roller to turn is if that bar is moved away from the cutout. On your printer that bar is not moving for whatever reason. Only thing I can suggest is to remove the covers, the formatter and the gear train and look at the selenoid to see if there is a reason why it is stuck preventing the roller from turning. You can try to disconnect and reconnect the cable which runs form the selenoid to the ecu. If none of that works, I would lean towards replacing the selenoid as the first item since it works from the manual feeder that would indicate tha the ECU is probably good.

 | Re: HP LaserJet 2200d paper feed by dmzcompute (2/5/06 12:09 PM) reply | + / - | There is one other thing which just came to mind which is possible. When you aks the printer to print watch the roller in the manual feeder to see if it turns. I have seen cases where the flag which tells the manual feeder it has paper has its spring come off or out of postion and the flag never returns back making the printer think there is paper in the manual feeder. The flag is black in color and sits in a cutout on the manual feeder a little to the right of center. If you see the cutout and do not see the flag, then that is your problem.

 | Re: HP LaserJet 2200d paper feed by toddtone (2/28/06 4:25 PM) reply | + / - | Ha, go figure. I took the printer to a local shop and told him what the problem was. He pulled out the cassette, clicked the "paper stop" (adjustable tab for different sizes of paper) into place in the back of the cassette, and said "there...fixed!" He was right.
Thanks again for all of your help. Just wanted to pass on the final result.

 | Re: HP LaserJet 2200d paper feed by moe (2/28/06 7:28 PM) reply | + / - | I had the same thing happen at a client's last week. They had the optional 500 sheet tray. That one has a paper stop that flips up and for some strange reason, they didn't design it so it locks in place. So someone added paper and in the process the stop fell down and now they had an A5 tray. Of course the paper slid back and now the rollers couldn't grab it. Real easy to diagnose when you're there, not so easy when you're not. If it came into the shop, I wouldn't have charged. Making me drive on the 405 is a different story.

 | Re: HP LaserJet 2200d paper feed by arthur505 (5/4/09 6:42 AM) reply | + / - | This may be related. As part of a regular maintenance routine, I replaced the pick up rollers for both Tray 1 and Tray 2. Tray 1, which had never worked with duplexing on this refurbished printer, now works better than it ever has. Tray 2, the cassette, which worked before the maintenance, stopped working properly. Now, the paper only partially feeds; then the printer goes into error. Obviously I don't have to use the tray, as all the other features now work fine, but I would like to have it back!
Note: When I replaced the pickup roller for tray 2, it seemed to me that the shaft on the left side (gray and slotted) which also carries the black sensor lever or flag, was more exposed when I finished installing the new pickup roller than it had been before I started. The sensor lever, though it moves freely, also no longer clears the cassette when I remove tray 2 from the printer. I have to stick a finger in to raise the sensor lever in order to remove the cassette. This seems wrong, as if something has shifted.

 | Re: HP LaserJet 2200d paper feed by dmzcompute (5/4/09 8:56 PM) reply | + / - | The shaft has probably popped out. First off the shaft is on the right side as your are probably describing it with the printer turned over. That said the only true way to correct the problem is you have to remove the right side cover, top cover, formatter and then remove the main gear assembly which will expose the feed selenoids and gears. When it pops out the "L" arm of the selenoid is impacted so you have to reset it correctly. All that holds the shaft in place is a while clip that locks into the frame.

 | Re: HP LaserJet 2200d paper feed by arthur505 (5/6/09 6:59 AM) reply | + / - | Right/left depends on which way the printer is situated, but I take your point, and I thank you for it. I had a feeling another teardown would be required. I hope the shaft isn't broken.

I am experiencing the same problem discussed in this post: my pickup roller isn't turning.
I would appreciate your emailing me the service manual for the HP LJ 2200 series of printers.
Thanks in advance! :-)
