 | hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by jkaprinter (1/16/06 7:01 PM) reply | + / - | When I run a self test or a print job it sounds like the main motor is turning on and attemting to feed paper but no paper is being fed in. Thats from the fixed and manual tray. If I run a cleaning test It is able to pickup and feed just fine and the cleaning page exits ok. I have run the engine test by pushing the internal button but get the same result, no paper gets fed in. The maint. manuals I have state to troubleshoot a paperfeed failure but my manual does not have a paper feed flow section. Any Ideas?
Thanks John

All 3 lights stay on after it times out.

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by dmzcompute (1/16/06 7:46 PM) reply | + / - | That is a fatal service error. You need to press the go and job cancel buttons at the same time and report back the light pattern left with both buttons down.
|
 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by jkaprinter (1/16/06 7:55 PM) reply | + / - | It looks like the attention and processing lights are staying on after I followed your procedure.

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by dmzcompute (1/16/06 8:45 PM) reply | + / - | That is a laser/scanner motor error. Probably the motor is not coming up to speed. It is fairly common for that series. Usually you have to replace the complete laser/scanner assembly. Moe on this site has had some success with opening the laser/scanner assembly and lubing the motor shaft with some high quality oil he sells on this site.
|
 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by jkaprinter (1/18/06 8:17 PM) reply | + / - | Thanks for the excellent advice. How do I get a hold of Moe and do you know the name of the oil I need to purchase?
Thanks So Much/John
|
 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by moe (1/19/06 10:09 AM) reply | + / - | I have had good success with the lubricant, but did ruin one scanner in the process. What I didn't allow for was the motor flung the lubricant on the prism and it was uncleanable. If you are going to try it, I suggest that you cover the prism with some paper and tape and then run the printer with the scanner cover removed. You'll have to figure out how to bypass the door interlock so it will run. Then when the scanner spins up, it won't mess up the optics. You do this a few times to make sure the oil has all been flung out and the motor runs quiet. Here is a link to the lubricant. http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/specials/misc/chemicals/S93

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by dmzcompute (2/11/07 3:54 PM) reply | + / - | You need to give us more information. When you send a job to feed from the paper cassette, does it try to print and do you then get a blinking trouble message? On this printer it is very easy to test and see the movement of the pickup roller for the tray. Just remove the tray and you will see a small black flag next to the pickup roller. That is the paper out flag. Just send a print job to the printer and at the same time lift up on that flag and the pickup roller in the printer should attempt to turn. Does it? If it does, then just clean the roller with warm soapy water and dry and see if that helps. If it does, you may need to replace the roller or in some cases if you remove it which is not that hard and you are real careful it is possible to "crawl" the rubber around the roller so the worn spot is located where it does not contact the paper.
|
 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by cman6453 (2/12/07 7:50 PM) reply | + / - | dmz - I send a job, the cassette clicks a couple times, paper out flag does not feed when the job starts or when the clicks occur. Blinking amber light trouble code.
HOWEVER, I'm glad to say that I figured out what the problem was. The paper length adjustment on the cassette was fully extended and the paper was not getting picked up by the pickup roller. Re-adjusted it to the proper length of the paper and VOILA!!
Thanks for the reponse dmz!! WHEW!! Glad that wasn't so complicated.

 | I think I broke my HP 2200 laserjet by constans (4/19/07 12:40 PM) reply | + / - | Hi Printer Wizards! I attempted my first printer repair today and I think I broke it! Original problem: When printing double-sided from the lower cassette, 2 sheets would often get picked up and jam in the section under the toner cartridge. From what I read in the forums, I deduced that this was a problem with the pickup roller being worn. Attempted Fix: I read that as a temporary fix, you could rotate the rubber roller to move the worn spot away from the pickup location (http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/laser/20153#1) We had a hard time getting the roller out, but we did eventually, and rotated the rubber, and put the whole thing back together, and it seemed correct. Current problem: Now the printer does not pick paper up from the lower cassette at all. It seems to be trying to run, but no paper is picked up, and then the flashing orange attention light comes on. (No other lights come on.) It prints fine from the upper multi-purpose tray. Trouble-shooting: I tried the test mentioned in the above post - that is, sending a job without the paper tray, and looking to see if the roller is turning. The answer is, yes, it does turn - it turns two times, and then stops and the orange attention light starts flashing. Question: is it possible that we put the roller in upside down (that is, 180 degrees rotated from where it should be?) Pardon my stupidity, but would this make a difference?
I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks for your time.
|
 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by dmzcompute (4/19/07 3:18 PM) reply | + / - | First off to correct the original issue the pickup roller was not the problem. The problem is the separation pad in the front of the paper tray is worn and needs to replaced. It cannot be doctored to work. Now as to the other issue if the roller is turning then it should pickup the paper. Make sure the paper tray when inserted is raising up. When you remove the tray you can press the base down and it will stay down. There are two plastic round pieces one on each side which when pressed down will cause the tray to raise. One other thing you can do is use a flashlight and observe what is happening from the rear of the printer. You can not put the pickup roller 180 degrees out of sync. If it turns it is put on correctly.

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by englishrat (4/20/07 4:24 PM) reply | + / - | I had same problem ie the 3 lights & no paper feed - also an abnormal motor noise when sending print job. Anyway it was fixed simply with a small drop of 3-in-1 (light machine oil) on the scanner motor spindle and seems fine. Some TIPS for those attempting & locating this repair: scanner motor is lcoated under top cover at rear. Top cover came off my unscrewing front/rear covers, sides clip/slide off, and top unscrews off. You are now about to enter a dust-free clean zone: CLEANLINESS & NO TOUCHY SHINY PARTS IS PARAMOUNT!! Removed the 6 sm retaining screws and move a few wires going over top of scanner/laser/motor assembly. Lift cover off. Mask off prisms with tape/paper. Remove 4 sm screws securing circuit board with motor. Gently prise plastic clip retaining motor to circuit board & shaft. Gently lift motor off shaft, lube spindle/shaft and reseat motor with clip. Dont put too much oil - only a tiny drop is necessary. This way there should be no risk of dmage to prism etc, or oil spray. If u inhibit some of the microswitches then u can test scanner motor b4 complete reassembly. Cover the scanner motor tho for safetly. Re-assemble! Good luck!

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by Andy Mal (5/2/07 9:53 AM) reply | + / - | I had the same problem with two different 2200dn printers. The first one was fixed by purchasing a maintenance kit. When the second one went we replaced the maintenance kit but the problem still existed. We eventually figured out that the paper out flag was getting caught on something and wasn't loose, so it wasnt dropping into position correctly. This was caused by the replacement paper pick up roller not being put in place correctly. It's working superbly now, with new rollers, fuser etc etc etc. And I even successfully followed "englishrat's" instructions to lubricate the scanner motor spindle. So after a lot of work, and with a lot of help from the users in this thread, things are looking good.
Cheers Guys
Andy

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by cthomaspa (5/2/07 10:07 AM) reply | + / - | I have read all of the responses and I'm considering doing the scanner motor repair myself with the oil treatment. Can anyone supply a repair manual or any photos/diagrams that show the scanner motor location?
I'm willing to try this fix, since I was just informed by the local HP Service Center that a new assembly with installation would run between $300-$350.
Any other suggestions from anyone out there?

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by moe (5/2/07 10:53 AM) reply | + / - | Scanner motor is located inside the scanner assembly. The scanner assembly is on top of the printer under the top cover. You need to remove the back cover first, then the 4 screws that hold the top cover. You also need to disengage the arm to the front lid to take the cover off.

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by cthomaspa (5/2/07 11:11 AM) reply | + / - | Moe, Thanks! I'll give it a try. BTW, since my printer went south on me (yesterday), from the comments I have seen on a lot of forums, it appears as though the scanner problem is a major issue with the 2200. Was this an inherent defect with this printer? Also, if I can fix it, are there any precautions I can take to avoid this issue in the future? Regards, Richard

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by moe (5/2/07 2:06 PM) reply | + / - | Nothing you can do. It spins too fast and the bearings are too small. Design issues. Just be real careful with the oil. I ruined my first one by putting too much and not covering the prism when I tested it. Flung the oil everywhere and it reacted with the plastic and wouldn't come off.

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by dmzcompute (3/31/08 4:47 PM) reply | + / - | Are the 3 lights on solid at once or just cycling from top to bottom. If solid and not cycling press both buttons to get the secondary code and report back. If cycling from top to bottom i would guess the formatter is toast.

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by dmzcompute (3/31/08 4:48 PM) reply | + / - | Also if the printer has a network card installed, remove it with the power off and then see what happens when you power it on. I had one not to long ago that the lights kept on cycling and it ended up being a bad jet direct card.

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by themossytrader (4/24/08 9:44 AM) reply | + / - | I have the same problem orginally discribed but I only have the attention light blinking. I hooked up this printer, printed the self test paper (it printed) then sent my first print job. It printed 1 page and got the error so I removed the jam. It has not worked since. I power on, it cycles through the lights and stops with a steady green light. I send a print job, the green blinks to receive the data, the engine cycles and then it goes to a blinking attention light after timing out. No problem I thought, checked for paper jams in duplexer, under toner and the exit areas. No jams. Pick up rollers will not engage through cassette nor through front multipurpose door. I checked to make sure the finger has dropped down in both the cassette area and front feed areas. I even disassembled the printer, dropped the board out, and removed the duplexer plate to check that finger and it is dropping down into the paper path. (total of three sensors) I have two of these printers so I took the cassette out of the working printer and installed it into the non working printer and the pick up rollers still did not engage. I took the toner cartridge out of the working printer and installed in non working printer and the rollers did not engage. It is a simple blinking red light and I have tried everything I can find on the internet to try and still nothing. I even tried sticking a piece of tape up in the printer to hold the duplexing tray up and tight to make sure the duplex paper sensor would sense the paper coming through the track. I am at my wits end.... Any suggestions would be appreicated.

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by PrintersStink (5/2/08 10:58 AM) reply | + / - | I think I have the same problem but not sure if it is exactly the same. When I plug the printer in the motor runs with no noise and no problem. If I push down the two buttons to get a test page the printer makes a weird noise like something is stuck or rubbing but it kind of sounds like an alarm. No paper is moving at all. The noise stops after awhile and all three lights come on. I switched out the fuser(?) With one that I new is good and I still have the same problem. I used to have this really cool manual I got from hp website with all the parts but it is not on the website anymore and hp will not put it back up. I am not sure what is going wrong with this printer but it sure is giving me a lot of anxiety. I must be having nightmares about it cause my husband said I was talking about it in my sleep. Please help.

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by Roberwel19 (6/26/08 8:25 AM) reply | + / - | I picked up a 2200dn from a thrift store that had the issue of emitting a loud siren like noise when a print job or test page was attempted. I found this thread and lubed the laser/scanner motor which worked! So, I decided to post a step-by-step process for others who have this problem and want to save their printers (AND MONEY). It is not at all difficult IF you are comfortable with disassembling your printer. IF NOT please seek out an authorized HP repair professional or purchase a new printer. I assume no responsibility for you screwing up your printer.
If you would like to view the service manual for the Laserjet 2200 series you can go to: www2.yc.edu/content/its/desktopservices/Documents/LJ%202200%20SM.pdf The service manual describes how to remove everything necessary to get to the laser/scanner assembly.
Altough it is not absolutely necessary to remove the laser/scanner assembly I found it was easier to access the motor outside of the printer. Also, you may want to wear latex gloves when accessing the inside of the Laser/Scanner Assembly.(Instructions below are assuming you are not wearing gloves.)
1. Disconnect all cables (power and interface) Safety first! 2. Remove Toner Cartridge 3. Remove Rear cover 4. Remove Control Panel cover 5. Remove Top Cover 6. Remove Laser/Scanner Assembly (LSA) 7. Disconnect electrical connector on top of the LSA 8. Remove the 6 screws on the top of the LSA and remove the cover 9. Remove the 4 screws on the motor PCB (DO NOT TOUCH THE SIDES OF THE HEXAGON PRISM!!!!) 10. On the bottom of the LSA remove one screw in the center and remove the cover. 11. Make sure the LSA is on a hard and clean surface and the motor assembly is not hanging over the edge. Push down on the brass colored circle to remove the motor assembly from the housing. 12. Lift the housing and place to the side. 13. CAREFULLY remove the white plastic peg next to the motor. DO NOT LOSE!!! 14. Grasp the metal part under the Prism and slide off of the PCB. (DO NOT TOUCH THE SIDES OF THE HEXAGON PRISM!!!!) 15. Using a Q-tip (A good quality one that is tightly wound) PLACE 1-2 DROPS of 3 in 1 oil on one end of the Q-tip. (DO NOT USE MORE THAN 2 DROPS!!!!!!) 16. Rub the oiled end of the Q-tip on the shaft under the prism inside the metal part. Clean any excess with dry end of the Q-tip. (DO NOT TOUCH THE SIDES OF THE HEXAGON PRISM!!!!) 17. Reassemble the Prism motor and spin a couple of times to distribute the oil inside the shaft. (DO NOT TOUCH THE SIDES OF THE HEXAGON PRISM!!!!) 18. Reassemble LSA 19. Reassemble printer. 20. Hit Go button to print demo page.
If you do touch the sides of the Prism with your fingers, gently wipe off with a CLEAN SOFT CLOTH until all residue is removed. DO NOT USE any cleaning chemicals on the Prism!
I hope this helps. I will try to post some pictures in the near future.

But now that its changed, when there is paper in the manual tray it will take 3 pages through the printing.. won't print on it then take a page from the Tray 2 and print the document?? Any ideas???

 | Re: Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by Anonymous (9/1/08 5:12 PM) reply | + / - | Thanks for these instructions, and particularly for including the link to the service manual. I would have never gotten the printer properly apart otherwise.
Even after taking my 2200dse apart and applying 3-in-1 oil, I was still skeptical that the little motor spindle under the prism was the source of all that noise and of my trouble. But when I put things back together, the printer worked flawlessly. Thanks for saving me hundreds of dollars for a replacement printer!
(The only downside is that I had nearly convinced my wife that it was time for a 3600dn color printer. Sigh.)

 | Re: Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by JCS47 (9/13/08 10:44 AM) reply | + / - | I tried the repair but was very careful how much oil I put on the motor shaft. Took some doing to get into the unit and my first thought was, not something for the faint of heart. However, I could take it apart and put it back together in my sleep now. One just needs to be especially careful of any plastic part that is a clip and especially the one that connects the lid where the toner cartridge is kept. As to oil, I was not aware that 3 N 1 also made motor oil in the little can? So I took it apart a second time and cleaned the motor shaft and this time, I used sewing machine oil which is a fine oil with extraordinary lubicating properties. Available at most sewing machine stores. And, I saw some smudges on the prism and cleaned them with a camera lens cloth which is just for things such as this. In any case, just wanted to thank you and the forum for the inspiration and knowledge to save me hundreds of dollars. Again, thanks for the posting. James

 | Re: hp laserjet 2200 not feeding paper by kev392in (4/24/09 7:10 PM) reply | + / - | Wow.. that was it - lube the motor spindle. From the noise the thing made, it wouldn't have been my first guess. I figured more like a gear had blown up.
Getting the little white plastic retaining pin off the motor board was impossible. I ended up pushing it just enough to be out of the way so I could slip the motor apart. It guess it's really not necessary to remove the motor board, but doesn't hurt. Problem with mine was the board wouldn't come off. I fiddled with it and eventually got it loose. Don't really know what was holding it.
I used a teflon based lubricant. I don't know how it could possibly fly out of the motor and on to the optics. That would be a trick, unless you really drowned the thing. Motor spun ok before the lube, but much better afterwards.
Put humpty-dumpty back together again (there were barely two pieces left joined - from before I googled for this problem) and it worked. If I went straight to the original cause, could have been fixed in less than an hour.

 | hp 2200 not feeding paper - orange light flashing by Anonymous (10/21/09 1:52 PM) reply | + / - | Hi All
My laserjet 2200 is not feeding paper from either tray. It sounds OK when it powers up, then after 4s a lame click (from the solenoid?), then a further 3s and the amber light is flashing - it hasnt picked up any paper and neither of the rollers move. My guess is the solenoid is not engaging the roller properly...but how/where/what is find the offending part(s) in the printer?
Your help would be appreciated.
