HP 4500 Color Laserjet - ITB Drawer Will Not Open

We were printing a job and someone heard a grinding squealing noise. They immediately turned off the main power. We tried to open the ITB drawer but it only moves about 1/4 of an inch. Also when we power up we get a 49 error. Any idea as to how to open the ITB drawer so i can see what might have been causing the noise ??? Thanks.

You first have to remove the top and the left side cover. If you look at the center area of the left side, you'll see 2 interlocking gears with lines on them. You have to manually rotate the gears so the lines are touching. This will allow you to remove the ITB drawer.

Thanks moe. As it turned out the ITB must have been in the elevated position due to a paper jam. We pulled the power cord and let it sit for some time and then powered it up to ready and down a few times and the sound was eliminated. Shortly thereafter the mechanism must have reset itself so that we were able to remove the drawer and then the multiply picked sheets of paper. Ultimately, it seems to be working ok now. I will certainly retain your instructions should this recur. BTW, the inside is exceptionally dirty with various toner powders. Do you know if HP has local service centers where I could hire someone to perform a clean up service ? Thanks again.

I really would not recommend an HP authorized service center to do the work. They tend to be a lot higher priced than local repair shops. I don't know what area you are in, but if you told us, I'm sure that someone on the forum could recommend an honest and inexpensive shop.

I have a horrible problem which is totally my fault. My ITB drawer will not open because I installed a new transfer kit incorrectly. I didn't align the front part of the transfer kit correctly; it didn't drop down. Now the ITB drawer will not open at all. I can touch the transfer kit through the opening of the upper door, but it is wedged into the ITB drawer and I can't budge it. I don't know what to take apart. Would removing the CAROUSEL free it up? I hope I can do the repair myself since a repair person will probably charge more than I paid for the printer! Thanks for any ideas you have
