 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by moe (9/10/05 12:11 PM) reply | + / - | Our webmaster took it down for improvements. That was 8 months ago and I've nagged him several times about putting it back up. If you post your light codes, we'll be happy to tell you what they mean.

All 3 leds stay on, and if the button is pressed, the top and bottom go off, the centre one stays on.
Thank for your help.

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by dmzcompute (9/11/05 8:23 AM) reply | + / - | Error is a laser/scanner error. About the only thing you can do is remove the cover and remove the two cables to the laser/scanner and reseat them and see what happens. There is also one other thing which may have happened. When you open the front cover, there is a plastic tab which presses in at the top a little to the right of center (I think) which is the switch on the laser/scanner. If that tab has broken off or is bent to one side I think you will also get the same error. If neither of these work, then the laser/scanner assembly needs to be replaced. Cost is high for that part, however, you could probably pickup a parts unit on ebay for next to nothing and most times the laser/scanner is not the issue.

Thanx for the reply. I have now got past that problem, but now the top light (orange remains on, after it has fed the paper thru until the top of the paper is exactly under the heating element, between the heating element and the red rubber pressure roller. It the stops there. Why? There is no sensor stuck. Is it perharps an indication od the scanner assembly? Help me out on this one please.

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by dmzcompute (9/11/05 4:29 PM) reply | + / - | Hard to tell what the issue may be. First what did you have to do to get rid of the laser/scanner error or what was causing it? Does the feeding of the paper seem smooth. In other words does the pickup roller grab the paper right away or is there a delay? There is a registration sensor located below and to the left of the pickup roller. What happens is the paper feeding trips the sensor flag letting the dc controller know that paper is on the way. If that sensor is not working the dc controller will think the paper has not started to move and shut down the printer thinking there is a jam.

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by Andre Roux (9/11/05 10:21 PM) reply | + / - | DMZ, OK, When the paper feeds, it is picked up, then stops after being fed about 1". After bout 1/2 second or so, it continues to feed, until it stops right under the heating element. the feed happens in a 2 action motion, where the solenoid kicks in twice. If the paper then ends up under the heating element, if the button is pressed, it will feed anouth 1/2 inch before stopping finally.
To get rid of the scanner prob, I replaced the scanner assy with another one I had lying around
Thanx

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by DJ2003 (10/8/05 3:12 PM) reply | + / - | Could you help me with mine? When I first plug the printer in, the error light is on then the other lights come on. During this time the printer starts moving but then stops. All lights stay on and when I press the button, the middle light goes off for a split second then comes back on while the other two lights stay on the whole time. Cannot print a self-test and printer responds to nothing. I've tried everything on the HP website with not help. Please help me.

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by dmzcompute (10/8/05 3:33 PM) reply | + / - | If the middle light goes out it is an indication of a fuser error. Make sure you are not plugging the printer into a UPS or battery backup device. Just plug it directly into the wall. If you still get the error I would replace the fuser. The only thing which concerns me is that the middle lights comes back on. It should stay off as long as you hold the button in. If in fact all three light stay on with the button pressed, that is a indication of a formatter issue and since it is mounted on the main board, unless you can get a replacement for next to nothing I would not bother.

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by DJ2003 (edited 10/8/05 3:52 PM) reply | + / - | I'm sorry. The middle light does go off when you hold the button in. I meant it comes back on when I release the button. If it's the fuser error you said, how much is a fuser?

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by bradlysteele (12/26/06 11:50 AM) reply | + / - | I have a similar situation - when I power my LaserJet 6L, the lights start to come on, i hear the power start to cycle, then I get AMBER/GREEN/GREEN. I've checked all the typical troubleshooting Paper Jam sensors, etc. Need Advice: does this sound like a Fuser? I hate to buy one if it won't fix my 6L. Thoughts will be met with my total thanks and gratitude! Brad

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by Stephen (12/26/06 11:54 AM) reply | + / - | All lights on = Fatal Error.
Push and hold button for secondary code.
If you read the whole thread carefully you will probably find your secondary code.

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by Everett (4/4/08 4:47 PM) reply | + / - | Mine printed a demo page fine then after that won't do a thing. If I hold the button for 2 seconds the lights go green/green/amber/green/amber first and third greens being the bottom light on the machine. I've tried looking up stuff online but nothing seems to match my problem. without pushing any buttons it just sits there with the top amber light on. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by dmzcompute (4/4/08 5:15 PM) reply | + / - | Everet,
You are not reading the posts above correctly. Only if all 3 lights come on solid will you get a secondary fatal code. Your issue appears most likely due to a sensor flag not returning causing the printer to think it has a jam. Most times the issue is the exit sensor flag in the middle of the fuser at the bottom. If it sticks or it has come out of its holder that is what you will get. Go to the link below for sensor locations.

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by Everett (4/4/08 6:05 PM) reply | + / - | You are correct, I misread those, sry. I am now looking at my sensors and they both seem to have a paperclip like bracket on them. If they were off or stuck would that bracket be off? The picture looks a bit different than my machine so I'm pondering disassembling it a bit to get in there better...thoughts on this? The sensor in the back does appear to be back in there sort of, it doesn't stick out as much as on the picture in your link. Hope you can bare with me on this, I truly appreciate the help and the super speedy response I got. You are a savior.

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by dmzcompute (4/4/08 6:29 PM) reply | + / - | Make it easy on yourself. Download the service manual at the link below and take off the covers and it will probably be the sensor flag in front of the fuser which is out of place.

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by Everett (4/5/08 11:55 AM) reply | + / - | The front sensor flag seemed to be sticking is all, it was in place. I wiggled it a lot and sprayed it with WD40 and then re-assembled my machine and have printed 7 things so far with no hang ups. I appreciate the help and the references, without which I would still be printerless.

 | Re: Laserjet 6L Error codes by Craigwd_2000 (edited 11/16/09 2:25 PM) reply | + / - | I too am also getting a HP LaserJet 6L Error code: after I was unable to fix my Apple PLW due to lack of available parts to fix it I found/inherited a used HP LaserJet 6L that used to belong to Frog Hollow locally in Middlebury, VT. I've already installed a 8 MB Kingston RAM module which isn't registering as installed: whenever I hold down the Power button after turning the printer on & it prints its informational page the page states that the printer thinks it detected 1 MB of onboard RAM as being installed when in reality the total amount should be 9 MBs. Also only my original eMac 700 with Combo Drive with 1 GB of RAM running 10.4.11 with GPL Ghostscript 8.64, Foomatic-RIP, Gutenprint 5.2.4, HPIJS 3.9.2 & Usbtb 1.0.17 installed actually recognizes the printer properly.
My '12 PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz with Super Drive with 1.25 GBs of RAM running 10.5.8 also has the necessary Open Source binaries that I downloaded from the OpenPrinting Foundation's website & a CUPS 1.3.9 binary installed that I downloaded from a fellow Mac user's .Mac iDisk page. Sometimes when I hold in the Power button on the printer the Paper & Power lights will start alternately flashing Amber. What exactly does this error code mean? My method for hooking up the printer to my Macs has been to use a generic USB to Parallel converter cable bought from Newegg.com.
