HP Color LaserJet 2820 Scan to E-Mail by johnlduncan (8/5/05 9:20 AM) reply + / -
Hello everyone,

I am setting up a HP Color LaserJet 2820 from the 2800 series. I am a bit puzzeled on how the scan to e-mail works. It doesn't seem to work anything like how the HP LaserJet 4101mfp. Also, I can't find any drivers for Windows 2003. What the heck is HP doing to me!

If anyone can point me in the right direction for setting up the e-mail I would be very grateful.

This is a brand new printer which was just released. If I was you I would call hp customer service and have them help with the driver and email setup. I would think it would be covered in the user manual which is now I think on the cd.

Assuming that you are trying (as I was) to connect across a network:

Don't install anything from the HP disk on to the server...

Run Add a Printer within 2003 server management

Select local printer attached to this computer - make sure that the auto detect is off

On the next screen select create a new port and choose HP Standard TCP/IP.

Then follow the next set of screens and type in the IP address of your printer (make sure that the printer is set to a manual address)

When the server find the printer, the next screen display the list of pinters and the option "have disk"; insert the HP disk on the server and select the location (ie. "D") and select the right model of the printer.

That's a pretty reliable technique for any network printer install, really. Though it is important to make sure the printer is on a static IP address.

Hmmm..... The poster, johnlduncan was asking how to scan to email, not on how to connect the printer to the network. Yes,you must have the printer connected to the network using a static or dynamic IP but then you must configure the printer with the IP address of the email exchange server(either SMTP or LDAP). There should be within the config menu of the printer a configuration for putting in the IP address of the SMTP or LDAP server. Once the printer haves this information it should establish communication with the Exchange server. Unfortunately I only have the service manual and not the user's manual for this product.

Hi John, I had the same problem with my unit. It would print but would not scan over the network. After many hours of re-installing software I finally contacted HP techsupport and they showed me the fix. There is a patch utility program available on the HP driver download page. Its called fixscanutility.exe.
That sounds appropriate, doesn't it? Anyway, it only takes a few seconds to run and automatically fixes the problem. This utility is not on the original CD rom that came with the printer.
Have fun.

Ron

Yes, you can get the printer to work that way with Windows Server 2003, but you cannot scan or other functions with TCP/IP that you. HP is late releasing Color LaserJet 2820 driver/application suite for Windows Server 2003.

These are dedicated chips which needs to be replaced. I believe that Moe is selling the drum chips on this site.

The chip is held on by a piece of tape. You can pry it off with a small flat head screwdriver. Pry off a chip from a used toner cartridge and put it on the used drum. The printer will recognize it as a non-HP drum, but will let you print as many pages as you want on it.

Some people were asking about getting round the chip on the drum. There is a very easy way to beat it although a little unorthodox. Remove the drum and turn it upside down - be careful not to get toner all over yourself. Next get a tazer / stun gun and stick it over the chip and fire it for a few seconds. The idea here is to knock out the chip information and leave the contacts in place - so please be careful. Next put the drum back in the printer. You may get some error messages but choose "Restore Defaults" in the "Service Menu" and it will reset. Obviously replacing the drum is a good idea and I would not recommend repeatedly doing this but the drum life expectancy is longer than what HP decides it should be. Happy printing!
