HP LaserJet 2200DN - printer quality issues

HP LaserJet 2200DN - printer quality issues by GMcCarthy (6/16/05 10:52 AM) reply + / -
I have HP LJ2200DN that is dropping "a's, v's, y's, w's and 2's" at random times and also printing irregularly sized black splotches on some docs, again randomly. When it doesn't drop the mentioned characters it prints them very, very lightly.

It is a networked printer (internal Jetdirect card) and not all users are having the same problem all the time. It is used by a mix of WinXP, Win98 and Win2K operating systems. I have changed the drivers from PCL5 to PCL6 and back. We have also tried changing fonts, shaking the cartridge back and forth. We use remanufactured cartridges and am about to go get a brand new one, not remanufactured, if such a thing exists.

Had anyone ever had this problem? The HP website does not specifically address dropped letters, they just talk about "ghosting" and recommend a new cartridge. I already had the printer cleaned and the internal workings checked by a tech who said he "did all he could."

Thanks in advance.

Could be a mix of issues. The first thing I would do is print a self test by hitting the big button in front. Next I would do a configuration page by holding down the back button and then hitting the front button. Check the quality of the test prints. If the defects are there I would lean towards the possible cartridge issue or dirty optics. If the defect is not there and I suspect it will not be, then you have a driver/network issue.

The blotches would be attibutable to the cartridge leaking toner. The other problem is some sort of communications issue. Could be a network problem. Best way to narrow it down would be to directly plug it into the computers having the problem.

This problem could be Related, so I'm replying on the same thread. (Forum Moderator, please advise)

On a 2200 we have, it prints ok on a simple page, but on a loaded page it tends to repeat the right side printing area that it printed already on the first rotation of the paper over the toner drum. Cleaned paper path with special paper & Changed toner, but it still does it. Wonder what it could be, before starting spending money on replacing parts at random; would appreciate advise

Easiest way to troubleshoot it is to run a loaded page from the manual feed tray. When the end just disappears into the printer, open the lid and look at the printed image. If the ghost is on it, we blame the toner cartridge. If the ghost isn't on it, we'll blame the fixing film.

Moe is right, if it stays after replacing toner, check the film in the fuser. When these wear out, it is not like a roller that has a line, it is a repeating image or character. As for the dropping characters, and specific letters, this is NOT cartridge related. Check and possibly clean the connector for the J-D card. If the letters drop in the test print, it is likely the main (DC Controller) or formatter. I reman these toners as super high yield, and I never have any real leakage issue with them. They are pretty good about it as long as the remanufacturer replaces the pertinent seals and blades. If not, it is not (in my opinion) a truly remanufactured toner. I find it is cheaper for me to do a real good job and hardly ever have to eat them, than to skimp and have my customers distrust my toners. The blotches are a likely result of the toner cart. The repeats are a likely cause of the fuser, and the dropped characters are a likely result of a elect./program issue. FYI, I did have a customer that had repeat image once on a graphics cart that I did for her 2100, with heavy solids quality (hot drum) and she had repeat that was visible to the naked eye on the fuser film. I switched her back to a text type (cooler drum) and the problem went away. Run your finger over the print on the page with your eyes closed. If you can feel the print, it is likely to be a little too hot of a drum, or the doctor blade is worn (i.e. not replaced during reman). :-) PCRMike

My reply after a deserved 3wks vacation :-)
Moe, I did your troubleshooting test (simple but Great!) and on the paper from the toner cage the print is clean, but if I run a paper all the way out it comes out dirty. Sooo, it looks like it's the "fixing film". I read on another thread or on this one, that this is part of the fusing unit. Is that correct ?
I also searched for the fixing film on this site but I coud not find it. I'd be looking for either on this site; pls advise

Regards,

ps Great Forum !!!

I have 2200 fixing films in stock. They are just a little different from the 2100 films, but the video is close enough that it will work on the 2200. If you order the 2100 kit and put "Please substitute 2200 film" in the Notes field of the order form, the office staff will make the change.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Turned out the printer needed a new formatter board. My printer guy got an exchange board and it was not too expensive and the printer's been fine since then.

This is really great to be able to get help like this in a public forum. Thanks again to all of you who posted in reply.

Hi Moe,

Great forum. I just posted elsewhere about this then found this forum so you can delete it. I am going to order the fixing film for the 2200dn as well. Those printers in particular are quite a pain. Thanks for your help!

Sincerely,
Trent

IS THE FORMATTER BOARD DIFFERENT ON THE 2100 and 2200? I have both and would like to swap rather than buy another. If not, where can I get one at a reasonable rate? Thank you for any help.

They are different. Try partsnow.com

I bought a formatter on ebay, very good deal on it, but now I get real bad ghosting going on at the bottom of my pages, I did that pop the cover open when the paper disappears and it's dirty, so I guess a new cartridge will tell that. ThanX for all your help, the streaks are gone on my prints now, that was a formatter issue. Keep up the good work work on the forum, ThanX again :)

I have a printer that intermittently prints out a black page. You pull the toner cartridge out and put back in and it prints fine for a while. Then the process starts all over agin with small black spots from the transfre unit all accross the page till eventually the whole page is black..

Re: HP LaserJet 2200DN - printer quality issues by Stephen (3/20/07 11:57 AM) reply + / -
Ron-Medcentral,

Check the High Voltage contacts that the cartridge sits against. (they might remind you of paper clips).

A contact could be bent or out of position.

I have a 2200N that has the repeating ghost image down the right edge. When printing the config page the HP logo in the T/R corner repeats every 2.98" down the page. I did the half print test and its fine before fusing. I'm not understanding the film references though. When I read the page for "HP LaserJet 2200 Fixing Film Kit" I don't have any of the problems listed there, eg "toner doesn't fuse to paper, rubs off and smudges". Is that the correct fix for this ghosting problem anyway?

Upper Heating Element Film 3.0 inches (76 mm)
Yeah it might not say it but thats a typical problem you can open the back door and angle the printer up and verify by checking out the fixing film. Typically you will notice on one side it appears discolored from the rest of the film. Fixing film roller sits above the orange roller if you look from the rear.

Thanks for the info nivek, I ordered the fixing film kit.

ETA: Replacing the fixing film cured the problem. The old film had an obvious buildup of toner on the right edge. Prints are nice and clean now.

Thanks FYOP!
