 | HP 5P Groaning Noise by Gary Parent (11/6/01 6:52 PM) reply | + / - | My HP 5P gives a groaning sound that is coming from the exit rollers. After more than 20 pages of continuous printing, the rollers heat up excessively, perhaps due to friction. I get a chemical odor, too. The paper is printed perfectly but really hot.
Is this a classic problem dealing with rollers in need of maintenance/replacement, or are the symptoms more serious (e.g. heat and odor)?
I have some rubber rejuvenator, is that worth trying. Also, I haven't a clue how to get at the rollers without potentially harming the printer. Hope there is a online guide, the manual is useless.
Thanks,
Gary

The paper is supposed to get hot. The fuser operates at about 180 degrees C. There is no way to regulate the temperature. It's controlled by a temp sensor feeding back to the controller board.

 | Re: HP 5P Groaning Noise by Gary Parent (11/7/01 3:18 PM) reply | + / - | First, my printed output is always perfect, never any problems there. My page count is 42,900 and I've used exclusively HP toner cartridges. I am now using my first XEROX toner cartridge. I hope its not the XEROX and its just a coincidence.
The exit area of the printer gets abnormally hot. About 20 pages and its a little furnace. I put my fingers on the vent holes above the exit rollers, and on the rollers themselves, and its burning hot. The paper is burning hot.
I just pump atleast 5 pages through and its getting warm alreaDY. From a cold printer, just one page generates a chemical odor and when the printer gets really hot, that odor is so bad I have to open the window AND leave the room.
Are you saying I may need to change the fuser and will that upddate the motor in the process? How do I test it for a fuser problem and I wonder if I can tackle that myself?
Thanks,
Gary

I've never seen a 5P fuser do what you describe, but it would seem the most likely cause of your problem. It'll cost you over $100 to replace it. Hardest part is getting the cover off.

 | Re: HP 5P Groaning Noise by Gary Parent (11/8/01 8:38 AM) reply | + / - | Regards the fuser, I see HP has a refurb kit for around $170 (I have to send them my existing one) and the new fuser is over $200. Are street prices the same? What are the options and recommendations , regards fuser assemblies?
Also, what is the description of the item I listed call a Maintenance Kit? Without details, it sounds like a box full of items that is supposed to fix items that HP thinks could go wrong. Does it contain a new fuser?
Lastly, with 42,900 pages on the original, is that considered about when a fuser would go?

Contact me by email, I can do better. Maintenance kits contain a lot of useless stuff that really doesn't need to be changed. Good source of profit for HP though.
