LaserJet 4 plus repar or HL-5170DN by Printer boy (12/31/04 5:59 AM) reply + / -
Hi

I am going to need to replace the fuser assembly (causing creases on the paper) and need a new toner for my laserjet 4 plus within a few months........ so her is the question.

Am I better to by a refurbished HL-5170DN or repair mine? The LJ-4 I have has a jetdirect card, page count of 178600, Postscript installed and 50 Megs of memory installed.

The LJ has worked like a charm, (other than the creases)...... Is the HL-5170DN any good?

I dont know anything about the HL, but as regards the Lasejet 4; some have said it is the best printer that was ever made.
You could try repairing the fuser : in any case the cartridges arent that dear are they

First I would not recommend the HL printer. It is a Brother and their track record is very bad. As to the fuser for you 4 plus. You can contact Moe@fixyourownprinter.com for a repair kit or outright fuser exchange. You can also go to partsnow.com or depot-america.com as both places sell refurbished fusers on advance exchange. The cost should be somewhere around 50.00. As to toner cartridges you can buy lexmark or xerox ones for much less then a new HP and they deliver very good results. I have bought a number of them on ebay for a fraction of what you will pay at the local office supply store. They are new and come with the guarantee. The 4 plus is one of the best printer hp ever made. Proof is in the number of them still in operation today after 10 years since they were introduced. In fact the printer was so good that when hp came out with the HP5, they used basically the same printer and just changed the covers, formatter and pickup roller. 178000 is nothing for that printer. In fact HP recommended doing a maintenance kit on it at 200,000. You can also get the kit from the sources I gave you above which will include a new pickup roller for both trays, separation pad and transfer roller. Only adds about 10-15 to the cost. Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply. That is what I thought...... the HP-4 plus is big, a little ugly but it works and keeps on working.

Thanks
