No paper feed HP 2100

No paper feed HP 2100 by jon (12/21/04 2:22 PM) reply + / -
I get no paper feed from the main tray of my HP 2100 until I pull the tray and push the paper down in front where it latches on something, then reinsert the tray and press the large button on top. How can I fix this?

Re: No paper feed HP 2100 by dmzcompute (12/21/04 2:37 PM) reply + / -
The latch down is nothing. HP designed it so when you load paper it is easy and you do not have to worry about spring tension. When you insert the tray the latch is released and the springs take over. You may just have a worn or dirty pickup roller. The roller is real easy to remove. Just remove the toner cartridge and turn the printer over. There will be a black clip on the right which you lift out and turn until it releases. On the left is a white clip which does the same. Just see how the shaft of the roller interlocks with the pickup shaft on the left side. Slide the roller all the way to the right and lift out. You can now clean the roller, replace it or if cleaning does not help you can get additional usage from it by moving the rubber tread around a little at a time so as to move the worn part of the roller away from the spot that needs more tread to grab the paper. Good Luck.

I am currently have the same problem that Jon is having. It is definitely NOT the paper pickup rollers. The bottom tray is not sitting high enough to trip the lift mechanism in the tray. I put a folded-up piece of paper under the tray to lift it up and it works ok. It's as if the guides are worn or something is out of adjustment. Not sure what, though, as there's not much there to affect it.

I doubt it unless the tray is defective. Easy to tell. Just remove the tray and press down on the paper and the tray should stay at the bottom. Then just press down on the two plastic clips on each side of the tray and the middle part of the tray should flip up. If it flips up and the tray is a shade higher than the separation pad in front the tray is fine and you still have a problem most likely with the pickup roller or assembly. The only reason it may be working with the wad of paper is you are letting the paper tray apply more pressure upward then the printer was originally designed for so it grabs the paper, but something must be wrong. If the tray does not pop up a shade above the separation pad then you have a problem with the tray and most likely with the spring on the bottom. Good Luck.

The problem was actually the plastic printer chassis. The department that has printer has a bad habit of slamming the drawer. It was worn down the guides so much that the drawer does not sit as high as it should, and as a consequence, it does not pick the paper up properly.

Not much we can do but replace the printer. Keep the old one for parts...

Those guides should not wear down that much. Why don't you take some duct tape and lay it over the rail so as to raise the tray. It should work.

I'm not going to pitch the thing. If I place a prop under the tray, it works just fine. I might be able to get some plastic mould and rebuild the guides.

Re: No paper feed HP 2100 (tray #2) by Comiskey (9/10/08 7:46 AM) reply + / -
My Laserjet 2100 WILL feed from the manual tray that folds out, but I cannot get it to feed from the paper tray down below, Tray #2. It cycles a couple of times, and I hear one sort of "soft plastic click," but then the top red light blinks and no paper comes out.

So far I have tried:
- replacing the roller, using a kit from fixyourownprinter.
- cleaning the long roller that you see when you remove the ink cartridge.
- opening up tray #2 and making sure the spring has lots of push to it. (and, now the paper is not sprung up evenly and doesn't lay as flat it used to--can't get the two side plastic moving parts to behave as before. But this appears to be a side issue) The main issue is it does not grab paper from the bottom tray #2.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks! -Comiskey

Take out the tray. Push down on the paper until it locks down. Now push the plastic release arms on top one at a time and that side should pop up. If both sides don't pop up when you slide the tray in, the pickup roller won't be able to grab the paper.

Thanks Moe! I did the fix as you suggested, and both sides now pop up. But, the main problem still persists: no pickup of paper from the Tray #2. The printer used to do that before, albeit somewhat intermittantly. Now it never can find Tray #2.
Thanks

Take the tray out, hold up the black plastic (Out of paper) flag next to the roller. Send a print job. Does the pickup roller turn?

i personally have seen about 5 lj2100 in the last 2 years with the worn plastic guides (part of the black chasis) as described by Jerad. so much so these days when i'm fixing a lj2100 that's the first thing i looked.

you can try remoulding, or file the worn-out guides flat and glued another piece of plastic on top of it. whatever works, even with the fold-up paper will do :)

Thanks people:

Moe - When holding the flag up, the roller does not turn. If I give it a slight push it clicks a bit and turns only a little bit. My concern after installing the roller was that it was not far "engaged" in the slot by much, but I suppose if the black spindle isn't turning that is the greater problem.

tk55- I tried using some thick tape on the two black guides nearest to the roller to make the paper tray more snug but this had no effect.

Puzzling over the pieces,
Comiskey

When you replace the roller, it's easy to push the shaft back through the printer frame enough so that the gear doesn't engage to turn the shaft. If you don't have much of the shaft sticking into the roller, this may be your problem. Remove the toner and stand the printer on its back so you can get a good look at the shaft. Just before it goes through the printer frame, it passes through a white plastic bushing. This bushing has a little tab on the outside that locks into a hole in the black plastic around it. Take a small screwdriver and place it between the flange on the bushing and the printer frame. Use it to gently push the bushing toward the center of the machine while you wiggle the shaft shaft to engage the gear teeth. The flange on the bushing should be up tight against the black plastic and the locking tab should lock it in. The shaft should stick into the roller almost all of the way.

black guides nearest to the roller? i think you might have got the wrong guides.

after you've pulled out the paper cassette, look at the 2 bottom ends (left and right sides) of the printer itself. you'll see 2 protruding black plastic pointing inwards towards the centre. these 2 plastic guides are what the side rails of the paper cassette are sliding on when you insert it back into the printer. normally they should have a perfectly flat top, but you'll find that the worn ones have half of it worn down by up to 1mm.

Forget about the guides. The pickup roller is not turning right which is his issue. David Belton has told him what to do. Let him get that straight first and if he still has a problem, then he can report back.

sorry ppl. just read through all the posts again and realised we're not dealing with the original poster anymore (which was >3 yrs old anyway).

comiskey's problem is totally different from the original post.

so, comiskey, forget about the guides. i don't think your printer has that problem anyway. you can remove all the tape you put on earlier.

HOT DOGGIES!!!! SUCCESS!!!

At first I had trouble understanding which white plastic bushing David meant, but after reading his post carefully I figured it out. The shaft sort of just popped back into place and although I couldn't see exactly what had hampered it, I will leave well enough alone.

I did purchase a new pickup jam repair kit (roller and digital video) from this site, and it is nice to know that I have a fine new roller and much more service to come from this printer.

Hey, I love this old laser printer, it was purchased in 2000 but is dependable and a REAL workhorse. Thanks everyone for helping getting it fixed. Thanks to the folks at fixyourownprinter.com for this forum. Now, what are recommendations for maintenance so I can continue to get good use out of it? I feel like I owe this site now!

1,000 thanks everyone.

Re: No paper feed HP 2100 Oh oh, wait a second... by Comiskey (9/12/08 9:39 AM) reply + / -
Premature celebration.

It is only working intermittently.

Roller is turning ok, but the paper is not getting picked up every time.

HP 2100 cured! THANK YOU, fixyourownprinter.com by Comiskey (3/18/09 11:54 AM) reply + / -
The unit was balky only for a short time, I now have had months of great use out of it. 1,000 thanks. This site is great and I will make sure to continue to support it with my purchases. I would like to offer a final thank-you to all who gave advice freely. Thanks everyone. -Comiskey
