The HP 3820 problem

The HP 3820 problem by arbikas (11/18/04 1:40 AM) +1 + / -
Hi all,
We have localized the problem with the 3820, - the cradle block, jammed. We found out that two of the gears are very weak and often are being brocken - so we found the solution - we produce them - these are two 18T gears with some knob at one of the sides, opposing one another

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Stephen (11/19/04 5:08 AM) + / -
I contacted this company for further information.

Here is the reply I got:

the price for single pieces is 12 euro per piece - it is high because it is very hard to produce this gear, it has an irregular shape and each gear is first made on a machine and then is finished by human hand. Naturally we can give a discount for quantities:

for 10 - 10.5 euros/piece
for 100 - 9.0 euros/piece

this is the price for the smaller gear. The price for the bigger 18T gear is the same.

These are manufactured from metal so they are stronger than the OEMs which are made of plastics

Here in Bulgaria we have sold around 350 pieces for dealers and end users and all is ok.

Best regards
Stefan Penchev

Re: The HP 3820 problem by moe (11/19/04 4:20 PM) + / -
At $1.3 dollars per Euro, that is on the expensive side. If there is enough interest from the end users with 3820 and 5110 printers, We'll consider ordering and stocking them. Just reply to this thread and we'll see if there is enough demand. Only serious replies please, we can see the ips they originate from.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Stephen (11/19/04 7:07 PM) + / -
Moe,

I'd be interested in 2 or 3 sets, I have a V40 that needs a set in the basement, and my personal V40 will eventually need a set.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by AZPrinterguy (11/19/04 8:56 PM) + / -
My customers who have the 3820 probably wont pay the cost , but the ones who have a v40 and the 5110 probably will , so that would make me a definate customer.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Rob (12/12/04 12:48 PM) + / -
Hello Leby
First what I want you to do is disconnect
the 3820 from your computer, turn it off and then back on.Once it has gone through its self test,
I want you to hold the resume button until you here it starting to fire up,it will print a nice picture of a waterfall.Once that is done, tell me if it did what I just described,or what it did and we will go from there.Rob

Re: The HP 3820 problem by BobPi (12/19/04 7:20 PM) + / -
My HP 3820 printer just died the same way, and I had to replace it immediately. I selected a Canon PIXMA iP4000 and I'm quite pleased with it. I also completely disassembled my HP to find out why it got jammed. It wasn't easy getting the cover off, but it can be done and reassembled. All of the gears were in fine condition. However, there is a resevoir on the right front that I believe collects the ink from self test and cleaning operations. The pad, originally white, was completely soaked and black. Once that pad was saturated, ink wasn't wicked away, and a column of black ink gradually built up, eventually reaching a sufficient height to interfere with the operation of the print heads (my printer was just over a year old). The ink dries to be pretty hard, so it's a mechanically tough obstruction. You might try manually removing this column of dried ink before buying replacement gears. I don't know how often you might have to do this. And I hope my new Canon doesn't have the same problem.

MY HP 3820 PRINTER STOPPED WORKING AND IS MAKING A SOUND LIKE SOMETHING CAME LOOSE OR BROKE. I TRIED TO REMOVE THE COVER TO SEE WHAT COULD BE WRONG,BUT COULD NOT. THERE ARE TWO TORX SCREWS THAT ARE VISIBLE. I REMOVED BOTH BUT THE COVER DOESN'T EVEN COME LOOSE. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO TO REMOVE THIS COVER?I'M A RETIRED ENGINEER AND KNOW ENOUGH TO NOT FORCE ANYTHING AND MAKE THE PROBLEM WORSE. THERE'S GOT TO BE SOME TRICK THAT I MAY BE MISSING. WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP YOU CAN OFFER. THANK YOU. INCIDENTALLY, HP SUPPORT WAS USELESS.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Bert (3/5/05 5:50 PM) + / -
As I recall, there are two large 'claw' style latches inside, one in front of the service station and one in the same relative position on the opposite side.

If you are getting a carriage blocked message, there is probably no need to open it. The gears that drive the service station are probably broken. HP does not supply them (check the first post in this thread for a second source). Personally I would trash it and get a new printer. The service station design was an attempt by HP to save and few pennies and turned into a disaster. There are epic length threads on this forum about the problem.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Mijikai (3/14/05 4:55 PM) + / -
I also have a similar problem, with the ink cartridges staying on the right side. How can I resolve this issue?

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Bert (3/14/05 5:08 PM) + / -
You almost certainly have a broken service station drive gear. This problem has been hashed and rehashed many times. Do a site search using "3820." Put simply, the printer is scrap.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (3/29/05 9:48 PM) + / -
I'll be interesting in 6 of these gears

Re: The HP 3820 problem by GauravDC (3/31/05 6:55 AM) + / -
I have had the same problem like all you you.The printer thinks that it has printed but it does not print.
I Repaired my printer after around 2 months of investigating. It involves opening up the printer and doing some hardware repir.I am writing a detailed tech article about it.I will post a link to it within the next week.Reply to me if youre interested.
Although getting the parts is a good thing...most of us cannot get them shipped them to us.So i devised a home made solution to the problem.

gaurav

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (4/5/05 4:33 PM) + / -
i certainly am interested in your report

Re: Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by moe (edited 4/6/05 7:18 PM) + / -
Just contact HP via hp.com and they'll send you a brand new 5650 in trade. Absolutely free. They even pay for the shipping. Why spend time and money on a poorly designed printer?

Re: The HP 3820 problem by GauravDC (4/5/05 11:52 PM) + / -
i just contacted HP.......they are NOT REPLACING THE PRINTER UNLESS IT IS UNDER WARRANTY!

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by SCarter (4/6/05 4:19 AM) + / -
Gaurav,

I would also definitely be interested in your findings. I have about 15 or 20 of these all doing the same thing at the school where I work and budget is too tight to replace that many printers. I would greatly appreciate your help.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by SCarter (4/6/05 7:55 AM) + / -
I also just contacted HP and they ARE replacing regardless of warranty status. Just go on their support website and chat online with a tech for maybe 10 or 15 minutes and run through all the "quick fixes" with him that we all tried a hundred times already. After he sees it will not resolve the issue, they will send you a brand new 5650 free of charge!! They even include shipping label to ship crappy 3820 back free. You have to give them credit card number just to make sure you send back the 3820, but they will NOT charge you a dime. Finally, Justice!!

Re: The HP 3820 problem by GauravDC (4/6/05 1:18 PM) + / -
They are only replacing the printer supposedly if you linve in the usa and NOT ANYWHERE ELSE!

Re: The HP 3820 problem by bob3000 (4/6/05 6:23 PM) + / -
I just talked to a Technician at HP. They are shipping a new HP 5650 to me immediately! Not bad!

Thanks for tip!

Re: The HP 3820 problem by SCarter (4/7/05 7:31 AM) + / -
Just an update: I chatted with another HP tech today for a 2nd 3820 I had. I think you should use a different email if you can, I also used a different address (parents house). Another thing, after they get all your info, they may ask if you use USB or parallel, make sure you say PARALLEL because if you say USB, they will give you cheesey $90 5150 (5150 does not have parallel port) instead of $130 5650. If they don't ask, just ask them what type of printer they are sending and ask if it will work with parallel cable.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (4/13/05 11:48 AM) + / -
I have a couple of the 3820's that I use for a specific printing application. I would be quite interested if there were a method for repairing these.

Best Regards,

Doug

Re: The HP 3820 problem by modyfesalbon (5/8/05 9:34 PM) + / -
My HP3820 printer is still new and I am very much careful in using it. I do not use refills. It is expensive, but my principle in buying a product is that if it is costly, it is more durable. But it is not the case. It has just stopped working. The lights are flashing when I turn it on, there is a strong dropping noise which shakes strongly my computer table, the cradle stays only on either sides and the papers roll twice while the printer head is not moving. I have brought it to the service center and they are replacing it with a new one, the same model plus a certain amount. My worry is that the same problem might occur next time. Please help me fix my own printer especially how to open the part where there is a need to clean the ink residues which clog or block the printer head that is why it cannot move.

Thank you very much!

Re: The HP 3820 problem by moe (5/8/05 11:04 PM) + / -
It's not moving because of a broken gear in the service station. HP has admitted to the poor design and is replacing the printers for free with a newer model.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (5/11/05 12:08 PM) + / -
hi moe
i tried contacting hp last week and was unsuccessful in getting them to send me a free 3820. i told them that i was part of a
group whose members have received 5650's or 5150's including free
shipping. of course i didn't mention any names, but they claim that hp does not exchange out of warranty 3820's for free and they gave me a shopping list of hp printers that i could buy and
their prices. can you tell me exactly what you said and the
e-mail address you used to contact hp. would really appreciate
your help. thanks. hrly7glf7@aol.com

Re: The HP 3820 problem by moe (5/11/05 12:56 PM) + / -
I'm the site moderator. I know better than to ever have bought a 3820. Read the thread above. If that doesn't help there are only about 2 or 3,000 other 3820 posts on this forum. Do a search. You can contact any of the people who've received one by clicking on their name and sending them an email. I'm sure they would be happy to help a fellow victim.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by bs12penny (5/17/05 8:15 AM) + / -
I read the problems and resolutions listed because my friend was having problems printing. The printer would go through the motions of printing but eject a blank page. I called HP for her and HP agreed to replace her 3820 with a 5650 for merely her time of repacking the old printer. The HP 5650 seems to be a very good printer and will amply satisfy her needs. Thanks for the info.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by de OMM (5/17/05 7:27 PM) + / -
Has any one from The Great North (Canada) tried the "call HP Tech and get a free 5650" option yet??

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by SCarter (5/18/05 4:52 AM) -3 + / -
'canada' and 'great' should never be used in the same sentence unless you are saying 'America is great, canada sucks.'

Re: The HP 3820 problem by de OMM (edited 5/18/05 5:52 AM) + / -
I am still waiting on an a little more intelligent response.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by twang (edited 10/2/05 8:17 AM) + / -
I called HP today, they are sending me a printer.

I have made minor edits in the chat I had with the technician so he and I could not be identified.

His name has been replaced with HP tech, and mine with Customer, there are also a few other changes made so the chat is not quite identical to the one I had.

HP Tech: Hello Customer.
HP Tech: Welcome to HP Total Care for DeskJet products. How may I help you today?
Customer: Good morning HP Tech.
Customer: I have a deskJet 3820 that is not working.
HP Tech: Okay.
HP Tech: I will help you resolve the issue.
HP Tech: Could you please provide me with a detailed description of the problem which would help me assist you better?
Customer: The service station sled is not moving, the carriage hits against it and they get a carriage blocked error, (two blinking lights on the 3820)
HP Tech: Alright.
HP Tech: Open the top cover of the printer and let me know the carriage position
Customer: towards the right side, the carriage can not go all the way to the right because the service station is blocking it.
HP Tech: Okay.
HP Tech: Let us perform few steps to resolve the issue with deskjet 3820.
HP Tech: May I proceed with the steps?
Customer: Sure.
HP Tech: 1. Turn off the printer by pressing the Power button on the front panel of the printer.

2. Open the top door on the printer and leave it open.

3. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
a. Printer activity continues for approximately 20 to 25 seconds (feed roller activity, alternating between turning forward and reversing).

b. After activity stops, the Power light and Feed light (bottom two lights) will now be flashing.

4. Pressing the Feed (middle) button results in activity and activity duration similar to the power up cycle noted above, with the Power light and Feed light continuing, uninterrupted, to flash in unison.

5. Pressing the Power button after step 3b, have completed will immediately power down the printer with no further activity or flashing lights.
Customer: Okay, I did those stepd, the service station never moved, the printer is now powered back off with the carriage sitting towards the right side of the printer.
HP Tech: Turn the printer on, Open the top cover of the printer and let me know the carriage position.
Customer: Towards the right side, the bottom two lights are flashing, carriage is half under the case
HP Tech: Okay.
HP Tech: Let us perform the steps to reset the printer cycle.
HP Tech: May I proceed with all the 10 steps at once?
Customer: Sure
HP Tech: 1. Turn the printer on.

2. Raise the top cover of the printer.

3. Remove the ink cartridges from the cradles and place them onto a scrap piece of paper.

4. Power off the printer by pressing the power button.

5. Disconnect the power cord and the printer cable (USB or parallel) from the back of the printer.

6. Let the printer remain disconnected for at least 30 seconds.

7. Reconnect the printer and power cables.

8. Turn on the printer.

9. Reinstall the ink cartridges into printer and make sure they lock into position.

10. Close the top access door.
HP Tech: Please update me with the results for the above specified steps to assist you further.
Customer: After turning on the printer in step 8 it goes through some cycling, then when the carriage tries to drive to the right side it hits the service station and the two bottom lights start flashing.
HP Tech: Okay.
HP Tech: As this problem seems to be due to a Hardware Malfunction.
HP Tech: Please let me know the serial number of the printer to verify the warranty.
Customer: XXXXXXXXXX
HP Tech: Thank you for the information.
Customer: It is out of warranty, but I have heard that HP has been replacing these printers anyway due to the high failure rate of the service stations.
HP Tech: As per the serial number provided, this printer is out of warranty.
Customer: Or more specifically the gears on the side of the service station.
HP Tech: HP would be glad to give you a replacement printer.

Twang

Thanks twang. Got in touch with tech, got a case id, now I wait for someone to contact me.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by moe (5/18/05 11:15 AM) + / -
Let us know if they send you a new one. I was under the impression that it was for US customers only, but I'm sure there are a lot of Canadians who would like to get their 3820's replaced.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by de OMM (5/22/05 8:06 AM) + / -
Spoke with HP Canada. They are sending me a printer. Apparently the same model. I am greatful for this as I never had a problem with previous 3820 for two plus years. Will update on replacement, once arrived. Just like to add thanks so far too.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Twang (5/23/05 7:09 PM) + / -
HP has emailed me shipping information, a 5650 is on it's way to my door.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Twang (5/24/05 5:58 PM) + / -
Someone emailed and wanted to know where I am.

In the USA in the Easter Panhandle of West (By God) Virginia.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by de OMM (5/25/05 8:57 AM) + / -
Lucky you then mate. I should get my 3820 by Friday 27/05. If it does not do as it says on the box, will they send me 5650 then? We wait and see.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Twang (5/28/05 7:50 PM) + / -
My 5650 arrived!

The confirming emails from HP say 3820, but if you look at the serial number they are refering to the old broken one.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Cprossu (5/28/05 11:42 PM) + / -
nice-the 5650's service station is built differently-right?
just wondering

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Stephen (5/29/05 7:23 PM) + / -
Yes, the 5650 service station is built differently.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by penn86 (6/6/05 12:37 AM) + / -
I just contacted HP and unless your 3820 is
under warranty and mine isn't, they won't replace it
or give you another printer for free. THey will let you
upgrade and it involves getting credit for old printer
when you ship it back to them. Not really a great deal
by no means.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by moe (6/6/05 10:57 AM) + / -
You must have done something wrong. The 3820 hasn't been manufactured for a couple of years so all these people getting new printers are getting them for out of warranty 3820s. There are lots of documented instances of people getting free printers on this board.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by de OMM (6/7/05 5:36 AM) + / -
Hi all and penn86. I recieved a recon 3820v. Works gr8 with just a little noise. I also got a 90 day warranty for said. happy camper in Canada.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Twang (6/8/05 7:57 PM) + / -
Well, I have a second broken 3820.

But HP is going to send me a another 5650 to replace that one.

Now I'll have three, one I bought, and two that were free replacements for my broken 3820's.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Stephen (edited 6/8/05 8:01 PM) + / -
When you get a machine with a 90 day warranty you can usually extend the warranty to a full year, it does cost, but I'm not sure how much, you have to call HP for details, it should say something about it on the paperwork that came with the printer.

De Omm,

Is the 3820V print engine different from the 3820?

I'm especially curious about the service station.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by moe (6/8/05 9:36 PM) + / -
There were 2 models of the service station. I know because I mistakenly bought the gears for the wrong service station. They didn't look anything like the ones that break on the faulty one. I would guess they labeled it V to differentiate it.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by ryounger (6/12/05 11:30 AM) + / -
Thank you all soo much. I had this printer sitting on the shelf for over a year. I decided to do some more research and found your site. I chatted with HP on line immediately and should receive an HP 5150 (I chose this one over the 5650) in 5-7 days; free of charge.

Thank you thank you thank you.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Twang (6/12/05 1:23 PM) -1 + / -
Your Welcome!

Re: The HP 3820 problem by SCarter (6/13/05 6:23 AM) + / -
Glad I could help ryounger. Although, you shoulda said you use parallel cable cuz 5650 is better than 5150.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by de OMM (6/13/05 8:48 AM) + / -
Hi all, the 3820V engine to the best of my knowledge, looks different to 3820 prior. Still woking great. Looking for everyones opinion, would it be wise to get extended warranty OR if 3820V packs up will HP do the same exchange again?

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Stephen (6/14/05 5:29 PM) + / -
IMHO HP is not likely to do the out of warranty exchanges again.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by SCarter (6/20/05 5:41 AM) + / -
Yeah, but he's talking about a 3820, so they will swap it again.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by sleepydave (edited 6/29/05 3:14 AM) + / -
Say, how'd you make out on buying gears from that European source? I could use a couple sets. I tried that tribar.cz site but I couldn't get my e-mail to go through, is that the same guy? Is the price 10 Euro per gear or for both gears - the website looks like per set. I have been using (2) 3820's for 2 years at work, printing 150 pages a week (yes, that's right). The guy who says the problem is leaking ink is right, that seems to start the problem. Maybe in my case with so much use the ink never got a chance to fully dry and create the resistance that breaks the gears, plus very early when I had a jam, I disassembled and cleaned everything, and have done that at the first sign of trouble ever since. Finally, though, the little gear broke. Lemme know if you were able to get a good price, otherwise I'll just join the rest of the crowd and send it back to hp. Thanks for your time and work on the website.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Twang (6/22/05 5:44 PM) + / -
The issue seems to be due to Carriage Stall. HP has identified this issue with the printer and announced a special consideration for the customers.

Three now.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by SCarter (6/23/05 7:50 AM) + / -
Umm, yea dude, I'm up to like 24 now.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Stephen (edited 6/23/05 9:00 PM) + / -
24 free replacements?

If it says "IN CHAT" in yellow by my name you can chat with me in fix your own printer online chat, look for the link at the top of the page.

Re: A DIFFERENT HP 3820 problem? by Harry W. (6/25/05 7:31 PM) + / -
hi all, I have a 3820 which seems to have a slightly DIFFERENT problem:

-after replacing an empty black [15] ink cartridge (with genuine), the printer was never the same.

-I see no evidence of the ink cart. holder thingumy being stopped from returning to its "home" on the far right hand side... it seems to sit in there fine.

-I also don't get the "flashing in unison power and feed light" behaviour... what I get is the power and ink light flashing.

-I've tried Rob's advice to Leby...

"disconnect the 3820 from your computer, turn it off and then back on.Once it has gone through its self test, I want you to hold the resume button until you here it starting to fire up,it will print a nice picture of a waterfall.Once that is done, tell me"

and this is the result:

-I hold the feed button, the printer does a little dance, and then the power light (only the power light) flashes for a while (30 seconds-ish?) and then becomes constant (ie fully on and not flashing)

-if I open the cover at this point, the ink light flashes, but the ink cart.s stay locked up on the right hand side, inaccessible, behind the casing, buttons, and lights.

Throw it in the bin?

Re: oops, I forgot... by Harry W. (6/25/05 7:33 PM) + / -
Oh yeah... and the nice waterfall doesn't print!

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Stephen (6/25/05 8:33 PM) + / -
Harry,

If you forget something in a post you can edit that post, you do not have to create another post, look for the edit link in the title bar.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com

http://h10025.www1.hp.com

Your light pattern is not defined.

What you might try is to use HP's Active Chat online support and see if they can help you.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/ProductRoot.jsp?

It's really too bad that your problem is not the bottom two lights flashing, because if that was the symptom you were describing to the HP online chat tech they would end up sending you a free printer.

Twang's post in this thread shows exactly how to communicate your problem to HP when your printer actually develops the carriage blocked problem.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by moe (6/26/05 12:15 AM) + / -
I think Harry is probably confused about the problem, is reading the lights wrong and really has a blocked carriage. After all, HP isn't going to check the printer when they get it back. Yes, the more I think about it, the more I think that Harry has the 2 bottom lights flashing.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Stephen (edited 6/26/05 1:19 AM) + / -
Moe,

That would explain why the Light pattern Harry is getting is not listed.

Harry,

Moe must be right you must really have a carriage blocked problem, contact HP VIA their online chat and be sure to let them know that the bottom two lights flash whenever you try to use the printer, and of course as they walk you through the trobleshooting those same lights will end up flashing again and again.

After your problem is determined to be the carriage blocked issue HP will surely send you a free replacement printer with new cartridges.

The 5650's they send, that's the one they give you is you are using a parallel cable to attach are very nice printers, the ink cartridges don't hold a lot of ink, but they are very easy to refill. The 5650's were selling for about $149, HP values the refurbished ones they send out at $123.

Ahh, thanks, fellas, I'm endebted to you, for your kind observations.
I may well have been high on printer ink fumes when I erroneously mis-saw strange flashing lights in unusual places. The aliens who subsequently abducted me have since explained my mistake, and now I realize the error of my ways...

definitely the bottom two lights flashing...

Who knew that the venting of printer ink fumes could be so mind altering!?!

Re: The HP 3820 problem by burnedarch (7/2/05 10:36 AM) + / -
thanks to finding this forum i have discovered that my hp 3820 qualifies for replacement as well. immediately after reading through this topic i initiated an online chat with hp customer support at the following link provided by Twang: http://h20179.www2.hp.com/ipgna/caller/chat.asp?productCategory=14438

customer support informed me that this is a known issue and that they are replacing these printers as a special consideration due to the known issue. i am receiving an hp deskjet 5650 as they no longer manufacture the 3820. special note: you are required to provide a credit card number as collateral for shipping costs. no charges are incurred unless the defective printer is not returned in the box and with the labels provided. there is a 5 - 7 business day turn-around time. thanks and good luck everyone!

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Santander (7/10/05 10:12 AM) + / -
Thank you all for your very interesting postings concerning Deskjet 3820 :) I'm from Germany, and of course my 3820 printer doesnt work anymore. :(

However, I'm not sure whether I have this problem with the broken cog or not. I have exactly the same problem as Harry describes above - only one LED (Power) is flashing for a few seconds or longer, but the printer doesnt start to print. The printer "thinks" that it is printing, so to speak, but it doesnt work. I tried all checklists and tricks which I could found in the manual, on the HP site and so on, but it was all in vain. What would you say: Only one LED is flashing - is this the same problem or not? And should I call the HP Service, describe THIS problem to receive a new printer or not? (Printer is of course out of warranty.)

Sorry if this sounds somehow silly - my English is not good. But it would be very nice if you could answer me.

Thank you, I send you many greetings from Germany :)

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Stephen (edited 7/14/05 7:30 PM) +1 + / -
Santander,

HP will not replace a printer for one blinking light.

If the one light is the ink light then you need to clean the carriage and cartridge electrical contacts with a paper towel or coffee filter lightly dampened with water.

When it fails with two blinking lights, THEN, contact HP and describe the two lights blinking, that's the symptom they are sending new printers for.

Read Twangs first post to this thread for a partial transcript of a chat with HP.

My 3820 is just over 12 months old. I have replaced the black ink cartridge with a genuine HP cartridge, but the PC tells me that the cartridge is not compatible. I returned the cartridge to the supplier and got a replacement, but still got the same error message. I've tried cleaning the connections behind the cartridge, but nothing seems to work. Anybody got any ideas? This is driving me CRAZY !!!!

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (7/19/05 4:01 PM) + / -
It's too bad you're honest, otherwise you could call HP and tell them you have the dreaded 2 blinking lights problem and get them to send you a brand new printer for free. I know one unscrupulous individual who got 3 free printers from them. I think there is another who claimed 15, but you don't know if these people are telling the truth or not, after all they're not honest.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by SCarter (edited 7/26/05 7:18 AM) + / -
That was an awfully gay comment you made. I got 24 of them replaced, how is that dishonest?

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (8/7/05 12:24 PM) + / -
I have the same problem. Thanks to those who created and maintain this site. It has saved me much headache in the past, and in this case gotten me a free replacement printer. The tech was not offering up a free replacement , as a matter of fact, he said it will have to go in for service because it is out of warranty. As soon as I asked about replacement mentioned in several online forums he processed the request right away. I got a call on a Sunday afternoon from HP, my new 5650 is on its way!

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (8/13/05 11:39 AM) + / -
I ordered a new set of print cartridges as Staples told me the problem was I was out of ink. It will not print now at all, before the was garble. It pops up with a message the the cradle is unable to move check for mechanical errors. Or it say check for a paper jam.
Will it be cheeper to purchase a new printer and should I try and get one that can use the ink cartridges, or am I stuck?

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by moe (8/13/05 12:08 PM) + / -
Since Staples told you to unnecessarily change the cartridges, take them back and demand a refund. Then you should actually read the rest of this thread which details how to get a replacement for your printer absolutely free.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by tst (8/15/05 3:21 AM) + / -
I live in Finland and have just talked to the HP-support in Finland. They say that according to EU-laws they don´t replace printers older than 2 years. After I have read about everyone who have got (even 24) printers replaced I really belived that HP also would send me a new one though it isn´t US or Canada. Guess I have to repair it myself - anyone who have done it before? I would be thankfull for some instructions.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by tst (8/29/05 8:29 AM) + / -
Mine isn´t replaced yet because HP-Finland says they have the EU-laws on their side. In my opinion this is not a question of laws, THIS IS A QUESTION OF HP´S POLICY!!!

Re: The HP 3820 problem by superyouper (9/6/05 6:50 AM) + / -
My problem is simple. My H/P 3820 started giving the print options in French, ie: paper size, print quality, greyscale, etc.

I uninstalled the printer and reinstalled it. Everything came up in English and the printer worked fine. Today I had to reboot for another reason and a window pooped up saying i needed a driver for the printer as the computer could not find it??? I put the disk in and it extracted the file for the driver.

Now I am back to square one. The instructions are in French again. Do I have to take a course in the French language or is there a simpler solution?

Re: The HP 3820 problem by triplea (9/8/05 2:21 PM) + / -
This forum is great!
Mu two 3820 aren't though. Any chance of getting a replacement in Sweden?

Anyway, I have two HP 3820 printers with different problems the first one Has the ability to move the cartridge holders all the way across the papers, but it still won't print. It just accepts the print job from windows, blinks, and blinks, and blinks. And then it just blinks some more. It does nothing. After a while windows gets a timeout (I assume) and tells me the printing failed. The printer keeps on blinking.

The other one has the problem where it can't move the cartridge holder out of the stall on the right.

I'm thinking if I can't ge a free replacement since I'm in Sweden, maybe I can use spare parts from one of the printers to repair the other one. But I can't even seem to get the shell off! Is there an instruction on how to open this thing?

Re: The HP 3820 problem by air (9/11/05 3:35 AM) + / -
Hallo there!

I already invested a few hours to check for my printer problem. It all started with a black cartridge that was'nt properly installed. I got the last 2 lights flashing, but didn't know what that meant. I read on this forum it had to be a blocked cartridge. A handy collegue helped me out earlier this week so that was fixed.
But the problem I'm still confronted with was allready discribed by Santander : when I start a print action (eg. a print example or a callibration or a document) the power light starts to flash while a the printer roller starts to spin. Everything normal, you would say - but after a few seconds when you expect that the printer would start printer is does nothing at all. The only thing you see is the power light that keeps on flashing!
I allready tried to print out the "waterfall" but except the preparation of the printer (roller, ...) it doesn't do much more than flashing its power light.

What the hell is going on here.

I allready re-installed the software, downloaded the driver on the hp webpage, but that didn't made any difference.

Who knows more?

A helpless guy from Ghent, Belgium who has a strong feeling of throwing his 3820 printer (what a piece of crap!) through the window of the first floor!

Had same problem with mine yesterday. After reading many posts, contacted HP tech support, they had me perform a few tests then admitted that the printer had mechanical "issues". They then offered to replace my 3820 free of charge with a 5650. At least HP is standing behind their support.

Go to http://h20179.www2.hp.com/ipgna/caller/chat.asp?productCategory=14438 to chat with an online hp tech. They will have you do a series of 'quick fixes' that won't fix the printer. Then he will tell you they are replacing it. Even if this is not the case, you basically want him to believe the carriage is stuck on the right. When they ask, tell them you use a parallel cable for printing so you will get a 5650 instead of 5150.

Got my replacement today. It's a HP6122. Has USB + parallel port. Works very well. Doesn't seem like a refurbished.

Some tips:

1. The down time is unbearable. I can't believe how much we depend on the printer. Either ask for expediated shipping or wait at least 10 days for delivery. We called on Sept 25. Got it today on Oct 10.

2. HP requires that the old printer to be packed in the SAME carton the replacement came in.

3. I assume HP and FedEx have a contract. So expect the return label to be FedEx as well. FedEx Ground doesn't do pick up for residentials.

Good luck!

I just read these post 10/11/05 today at 4:30pm and
I called at 5pm and a new replacement HP6122 is on the way
thanks this is some of my chat:
HP: CUSTOMER, the issue seems to be related to a physical hardware malfunction of the printer, which would require an onsite diagnosis.
HP: There is a Good News for you !!
HP:I will replace the printer and it is absolutely free of cost for you !
CUSTOMER: thanks
HP: Its my pleasure.
HP: To initiate the replacement, I need the following information.
HP: Please let me know the serial number and the product code of the printer. Serial number is 10 digit (combination of alphabets and number) and it is located on the label that is pasted on the bottom of the printer. Please make sure that ZERO, ONE ," i " ,"o" are not mistyped. Product code is a 6 digit alpha-numeric code, it will be below the serial number. Ex: C8952A

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Ronnybuck (12/2/05 5:04 PM) + / -
I had a 3820 that went bad last year. I did an exchange with HP for $74 and it is doing fine. It was a repaired one from Mexico. Now I have two that are broke in the same way as my first one. It is the gears or pins broken that hold them on the shaft. Apparently these printers were duds from the start and HP realizes it. When working they do a great job. My first replacement must have had an upgrade as it is still working for now. What I like is you can run the cartridges dry before changing them. New printers you have to have working both color and black to work. If your color is low it stops even though you can still print black you cannot. Also the 3820 uses the high capacity cartridges so you don't have to keep changing them every week. It does great glossy prints from digital photos. All I have to do is turn it on and it prints and doesn't have to waste ink like the EPSONS do. This whole world is changing and I will attempt to see if I can get replacents for the others. One is my sister in law's and the other my daughter. Anyway my HP672 still works and does great documents.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/8/05 4:43 AM) + / -
The free replacement printer for HP 3820 is over, HP said that this replacement program was end by november 2005.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/8/05 7:06 AM) + / -
Thanks, I found that out all they want to do is sell another piece of junk. I could hardly understand the person to begin with. They want the broken 3820 in exchange for a discount. I asked what they are going to do with it. I received no answer. I did locate a picture of the gears that break. Now I need to figure out exactly how to get to them. There is a foreign company that sells them but cost more than the printer is worth. HP sells the whole gear system for $60 still more than the printer is worth. I have a friend who bought a Lexmark and it has outlasted my HP. All I have left now is my swapped out one and when I checked under the cartridges in the cleaning basket there was a mushroom of dried black ink. I got to it in time before it jammed the mechanism and stripping the gears. The whole area is covered with black ink. I am going to slowly use alcohol and qtips and clean it. If there is any one that can tell what to remove to get to the gears let me know.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by moe (12/8/05 9:37 AM) + / -
I thought they picked Indians who sounded American so people wouldn't know they were speaking to someone in India. They throw the printers away as even they don't have parts to repair them with. Alcohol = bad idea. Run it under hot water. If you have a wife, don't let her see you doing this and make sure you clean up the mess afterwards.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by wayneL44 (12/8/05 8:46 PM) + / -
The small gear in the 3820 is repairable if the problem is the plastic tab has broken. Simply use a small finger drill to make 2 holes at right angles to the gear then push fit in a bent paperclip. Works great !! at least so far (1 week)
WAyne

Re: The HP 3820 problem by wayneL44 (12/8/05 8:48 PM) + / -
holes should go through the thickness of the gear and be further from the edge than the deepest part of the teeth.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/9/05 7:06 AM) + / -
Can you give some hints to what has to be removed to get to these gears. I have to get a no. 10 torx driver as my 10 in one set is to short for some. I have two of these printers to play with and maybe I can get one working and give it back to my daughter. I have a picture of what the gears look like and believe they are sandwiched on the right side between the paper roller and the basket. Thanks

Re: Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by wayneL44 (12/10/05 5:49 AM) + / -
remove two screws on top machine under cover
Two tabs inside front of machine (access with long narrow object like skinny screwdriver)
remove cover

about 5 screws/bolts to remove carriage/ printhead holder.
Also about three small wire connections pull at conector to remove
black plastic box to the right contains gears.

remove screw on little half circle plastic thing on left side of box
one screw on right holds box
also tab on right
Box comes out cleanly
there is a platic cover o left of box remove CAREFULLY
noting sprig and part positions.
The larger cammed gear usually falls out revealing the smaller cammed gear. The small broken piece will probably be there. throw the broken piece away. drill and repair the gear with part of paper clip.
when reassembling be sure to make sure slots on carriage engage metal frame and extra plastic cover piece is i place.
Good luck
Once youve done this a couple of times it takes 20 minutes

Thanks for the help. I have a no. 10 torx driver, cost $7.30 at Napa. I will let you know how it works out. Hp now has a printer with about 7 separate cartridges that run almost $11.00 each. Do you know much about it. Hp says they will give me a $60 credit for one and I have to ship back the 3820.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/11/05 7:01 AM) + / -
I have the printer apart and the gear. I did not find the broken piece as I think it came out in small pieces. I now have to find a small hand drill or finger drill. Radio Shack has a set of minature hand drill with assortment of bits only through their catalog. I will also check a couple of local hobby stores. I had one but cannot find it and will show up when I don't need it. I assume a hole is drilled at the edge of the former tab and a bent clip is cut and inserted to a height to touch the other gear. May be a couple of days until I get a small drill. Now if the wife does not get too close with the vaccumn cleaner.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/11/05 3:11 PM) + / -
Wayne:
I got a minature drill set from Radio Shack today. Now on the hole. Your first post said to drill right angle to the gear and your second one is to go through the thickness of the gear. What I should do is actually drill parallel to the shaft opening on each side of what is left of the tab all the way through.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/11/05 5:31 PM) + / -
I will try to do a text drawing of the gear as to where I should drill. What size paper clip did you use. The smallest I have would require a hole very close to the teeth.

center of gear shaft hole
....|
....v
...| |
.o| |o <---drill holes for paper clip
||||||| as close to shaft parallel to gear teeth
||||||| and shaft hole and next to what is left broken
||||||| tab.

The dots I put in because the board deletes any leading spaces and doesn't like tabs either.

Is this correct. When I do this is there any gear alignment or will it take care of itself?

Re: Re: Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/12/05 8:08 PM) + / -
Well Wayne it worked. I used a Radio Shack drill set p/n 64-2963. I used a small clip and cut the smallest bend. I did not drill all the way through as I did not want to disturb the smooth surface. I drilled the holes so the sides of the clip rest against the remains of the old tab. I have bought my daughter another printer hp deskjet 3940V for $45. She doesn't use a printer that much not the way I do. Anyone mechanically inclined should have no problem doing this. Just do it where it is safe from the wife and their cleaning moods. Thank you Wayne for the help. I have another one waiting after testing this one. I will take it apart to see what the clip is doing and if it is where I put it that is what I will do to the other one. I am an older person, retired don't have much else to do. I will be on the lookout for others who have any and set a price to fix them. Thanks again Wayne.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/12/05 10:47 PM) + / -
Out of curiosity, which of HP's printers use this problematic service station assembly, so I can be sure to avoid them?

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/13/05 7:10 AM) + / -
I think they all use something very similar. It is driven by the feed roller drive in most of them. What it does it drives the mechanism against something which is sensed as a stall and goes on from there. This same procedure is used to establish the right margin when the carriage has to be rehomed. This is a technique that has been used for years in printers. It is hard on anything plastic and that is why many good printers are trashed just for that. It is just simply too expensive to have them repaired when a new one is cheaper. In todays printers it's the ink that makes the money for manufacturers. In my 3820 I can literally run the cartridges dry even after it says I need to replace them. Now the newer printers will not let you do so they can sell more ink. I have looked at a lot of new printers and just about all have a rink dink cleaning station that wastes half of the supply just to get going. Epson is the worst I have seen for this. I thought I could bypass the whole thing on the 3820 but the firmware is written to see all this and will not work. There are no sensors just running back and forth jamming against something and sensing by the stall of the paper feed motor. The 3820 had a cheap gear design and that is why we are here today. I have 3 of these, one is in use, one I hope to be soon after testing and another waiting to hopefully be fixed. The best printer HP made is the 672 which is still the best for document printing. It does Color at 300dpi and in some ways with the higher resolution pictures it does a good job. The printer I bought to give my daughter was $45 and probably be something wrong with it in about 6 months. It will be interesting as to what. I used to work with HP Laserjet printers and they were good but with the heaters and gears and the constant cleaning they required kept me busy. I will keep posting my results on the paper clip repair and hope this will allow me to get more use out of them.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Andyjbee (12/21/05 3:54 AM) + / -
I have approx 25 to 30 3820's so I would be more than interested in a repair solution.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/21/05 6:58 AM) + / -
Wow that is a lot of 3820s. Chances are the problem with them all is the gear. Just read the post's above and good luck. If you are or know someone who is mechanically inclinded you should get some working. The one I did so far is still working. I am using it to print photos and documents. It will take a while to know the reliability of this fix. I have another one and will wait a couple of months worth of printing before tearing into it. My first problem was getting it apart and there is a posting on that. Once you get the basket out and remove the screws holding the cover over the gears, you need to be very careful of two springs and other gears. Just lay the springs aside as they will invariably drop off. One is smaller in diameter than the other so remember their position. You see the two gears in question and normally the smaller one will have the top part of the prawl broken away. I could not find any residue of it. You will need a small hand minature drill as mentioned in one of the posts. I drilled next to the remainder of the prawl at a slight angle toward the center of the gear being careful not to go through. I used a standard paper clip using the smallest and bending it some. HP wants $60 for the whole set of gears on this thing. My first printer broke and they did a swap out for a repaired one from Mexico. It is doing fine so far. When I do the next printer I may try and document it with pictures and of course have to work out a way to make them available. You have enough to make mistakes and I believe in learning by making mistakes. I have learned more by accident than on purpose. Check all the above postings above copy and paste them into a document or select print them. That's what I did and it is somtimes to picture things of what other people are describing. Seeing is believing. When I finished my first one and in thinking I may do it slightly different. Now if the big gear brawl is broken that will be a different story. Good luck.

Obviously, the average person only wants one gear and can't take them up on the offer. Since HP is no longer replacing or supporting this model, I've sent an inquiry to them and if their pricing is better than the european source (which was ridiculously high), I'll buy some quantity, add some instructions and sell it on the site.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/23/05 4:09 PM) + / -
I talked to HP support and was told that they only sold the whole set which may include the whole cleaning basket for $60. My paper clip repair has printed about 30 or so times and still going. While I had the cover off I watched the whole operation and see why the gear breaks. It's the jamming first one way and the other, but I think most printers do pretty much the same. This is just a bad design by HP and now they don't offer any replacements for the printer, they at least need to stand up and offer the gears at a moderate price not the cost of a printer. I just finished printing Christmas pictures from my son and family in Japan and everyone is standing in line to get a copy. It is excellent on plain paper but brillant on photo paper. Let's hope someone from HP reads all this and helps us out. If I had a new set of gears, I could have them in and working in less than an hour. Good luck to all and a very Merry Christmas.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/29/05 8:55 AM) + / -
I have just finished Chatting with a HP service tech and he said I would be refered to HP Canada for further assistance (will Email me). I hope they give me a replacement for my 3820. I found it did decent photos but I haven't had any other printers to compare.
What I would like to know is wich replacement printers should I avoid (if I actualy have a choice) 6122,5650 or 5150.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by moe (12/29/05 9:13 AM) + / -
I think you missed the boat for getting it replaced. The replacement deal expired last month. Check out my review on the HP1000 http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/34738

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (1/6/06 9:15 PM) + / -
I got the paper clip thing to work too. It isn't trivial. The design of the paper clip is important. What I used the first time was too rounded off and didn't hit the tab on the larger gear with enough surface area at first. I had to redo it so that it hit it with a very flat face.

If this thing breaks again it goes in the trash.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by WayneL44 (1/7/06 6:39 AM) + / -
Hopefully it is clear to everyone to use PART of a paper clip.
Drilling in the same dirsction that the shaft goes into the gear.
Needs to be high enough to engage the adjacent gear's tab but not so high that it pushes against adjacent gear body.
And I have done the same type repair on the larger plastic gear successfully.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by wayneL44 (1/7/06 6:44 AM) + / -
also please note that the hole has to be small enough for a very tight push fit on the paperclip.
Failures I have seen with this fix are that the paperclip will bend over. Another reason to not make clip tab too high

Re: Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (1/24/06 6:59 PM) + / -
Turn off power and remove cord from power supply.

To remove the cover of an HP 3820, first remove the two screws on top of the printer (just under the flip lid). After that you will need to move the print head to the middle of the printer. Inside the cover, there are two lock tabs on the front of the printer. One lock tab is just in front of the motor, on the left. The other is just in front of the ink well. You have to push each of these in (towards the front) and the cover should be read to be removed.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Tom Wood (1/26/06 7:40 PM) + / -
I actually am suffering from the same problem. I corrected the blinking lights by taking apart the printer and moving the ink cleaner tray (right side of printer at botttom) to the back. I believe the blinking lights indicate a problem with the print head not moving correctly, in my case, due to the ink well blocking the head from moving out from the parked position. After I moved the well to the back, I now get an incorrect cartridge installed. I am thinking that it all relates to poorly manufactured gears and the high price to repair the printer.

Re: Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (1/31/06 12:15 PM) + / -
You have a broken gear as most of them do when this happens. Unfortunately HP no longer supports repairs for this printer. Some have modified them with a paper clip and others say they have new gears but getting them and doing foreign funds transfer is difficult. Best thing is buy another printer if you cannot fix it yourself. HP let us down in this one.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by hpwizard (1/31/06 12:44 PM) + / -
eduj & others . . .
The main problem with this unit is the service station. (On the right where the carriage sleeps)
I had one doing the "feed paper on power up & then do nothing"
I had 2 of these in then a 3rd came in with the feed page in on power up. I replaced the service station from the unit with a power supply problem & it was back to normal! Printing perfick!
I wouldn't have spent any money to repair but I have scrapped the other 2 (sorry both service units faulty) But I have other bits!

hpwizard , sorry byt what do you mean with that ? (I replaced the service station from the unit with a power supply problem)... Because i have the same problem ,please explain me to fix it ,please someone help ...

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (2/5/06 8:20 AM) + / -
Akis, the power supply in this printer is a single voltage supply. If it is the power supply then it most likely will not power up. The service station is a mechanical problem and a tab on a gear that drives it back and forth to clean the print cartridges printing head. There are some rubber flaps that wipe any accumulations of ink drips when the printer is not in use. It is these that I feel is causing the gear to break. If the unit does nothing when you push the power on then it is most likely the power supply or the fuse within it. If it does come on and tries to move the printing mechanism and cannot or if it does break free and goes to the left and feeds a piece of paper very slowly and then goes into error. This is because the cleaning basket did not move back and forth to it's limits which is sensed as a stall by the carriage motor circuit. This is how the printer initializes itself when the power is applied. The cleaning basket is first and if that is sucessful the margins are found and printing begins. This printer prints better than many of the newer ones and HP needs to give those who want, have it repaired or at least provide the parts. I do know a entire cleaning basket is $60 from HP but most feel it is not worth it. It takes some mechanical ability to replace it. Contact HP if you think it is the basket and if you can or know someone who is capable to replace it. But I feel if one goes that far why don't HP provides the gears at a reasonable price. I have tried to get this message to them with no success. They give printers with computers and that tells you have cheap they are made and all the profit is in the ink they sell.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (2/6/06 8:00 AM) + / -
That's what mine did when the gear broke on the cleaning basket. Even though it could not initialize right it would appear to be OK. When I sent something to print the light blinks because it is receiving data but cannot print because the the mechanics have not homed properly. Sometimes the error light will blink after this. This does indicate that your power suppy is most likely OK. I found out that the worst thing you can do is let these printers set for a while. What happens is the black cartridge will drip some and the ink dries jamming the basket and causing the breaking of the tab on the small gear. I now raise the cover to let the printing mechanism move to the left and take a flash light and look for buildup and remove the excess. I am still using a printer that I did a swapout with HP a year ago and found just that the other day. A full black cartridge will have a tendency to do this and the ink dries if it is not used for a while. That is what the cleaning basket is supposed to do with the rubber flaps is to remove this buildup. There are postings about the gears, a paper clip fix or actually getting the gears. I am working on getting the gears but the holdup is they are in a foreign country and will have to use paypal, which I do not fully trust, to pay for them. They are about $7 a piece. Scroll back through the postings and you will see this. Quite simply put it is the gear 99% of the time.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by hpwizard (2/15/06 1:41 PM) + / -
Akis & lydia

The main fault on this unit is the service station. As the above post states, a gear goes bust on the unit & that is that! The service station is part of the initialising process & when this doesn't happen, the printer throws a wobbly!

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (2/16/06 7:18 AM) + / -
As I stated in a previous post I have approx about 20 to 30 of these printers so been keeping an eager eye on this thread. So I grabbed 1 and started to extract the ink station and upon inspection there was no broken gear...so this particular one had a faulty board... popped the station in a printer with broken gear and hey presto one working printer (not sure how long it will last before gear breaks though)Anyway now working on other stations with gear problem. Been trying the paperclip repair on a couple and up to now no fix...it makes a lot of grinding noises and then back to square one..so my question is this. Is there a home posistion that I need to be taking note of when disassembling station. There are 3 of us working on a repair so the best solution will be on ebay...:))j/k

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (2/16/06 8:12 AM) + / -
Some of these printers can have other problems. The power supply is one along with others. When you have that many printers I am sure you will find other problems but most are the gears. If you don't do the paperclip patch right it will slip and you still have the same problem. There is a posting about someone who has gears in the UK but I am still trying to figure out how to pay. I am waiting on a notification about this. His email is stevenh_964@hotmail.com. He has a paypal account and should be as safe as any other way to pay. If you contact him be sure you say where you are, Country, State, etc so he will know from where he ships. I am going to contact him today for an update. Just a note my paperclip mod is still working but would like to get the gear. There is a place in India that has both gears hardened but I had difficulty contacting them. This printer was designed to be in a multiuse environemnt but ended of being thousands thrown in the junk pile.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Andyjbee (2/17/06 2:06 AM) + / -
Just a quick update on the paperclip fix. Managed to get 1 up and running perhaps I was not reading the fix properly but basically I filed down the excess plastic left over from the broken gear(not sure if this makes a difference anyway)drilled 2 1mm holes either side running parrallel to gear shaft. I drilled straight through gear. Bent a paperclip into horse shoe shape and inserted into holes. Andy excess which comes through other side I just snipped it down and bent them over to prevent the clip slipping out. It's all a nice tight fit so it should be nice and secure. Many thanks for UK contact for gears i'm going to drop him a line myself.

Glad I found this site. I have been pulling my hair out for four weeks trying to figure out my 3820. I see now that everbody has the same problem, thinks it printed but did not. Ijust went online with a tech. went through all the bs then he told me the printer was no good!!!!!
told me to take it to the nearest service center, ya right!! anyway I asked about getting it replaced, he said they no longer do that. So I called the 800 number first they said to bad, then came back and said I could trade up for a discounted price. So I listen the trade up discount prices were 107.00 to 173.00 plus they wanted the junker also. I had to say no thanks and will tell everyone I know what a junk it is. If anyone has gotten a free replacement after December 31 of 2005 I would like to know. Thanks

Thanks for the suggested recourses for the HP 3820. Mine has just suffered the big gear problem it sounds like. It has performed well until just a few weeks ago, printing beautiful photos and sharp reports. I will try and get resolution for mine.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (3/27/06 3:08 PM) + / -
I have fixed this printer numerous times. Nearly all of the problems stem from the assembly everyone has been talking about. Follow the directions by Wayne and you should be fine. Also note that you could also just crazy glue the broken piece back on the gear shaft if you don't want to drill or do not have a drill. Here is a link with graphics on how to disassemble the printer. Hope this helps.

I am in contact by email with a company Czech Tribar. They are planning to set up a site in a few days so those of us who want to keep their 3820's going can order both gears and pay by Visa or Mastercard. This is great as I have 3 printers broke. My modified one just quit. The bigger gear prawl broke. If I had been more care and supported that gear it would still be going. It only takes 20 minutes to take apart and a little more to put together again. You just have to be careful what you are doing not to damage anything else. There is a post with pictures that is very helpful by just using the pictures. http://3820.servishp.cz/
It will keep you from taking too much apart. So keep a hear glued to this site as I hope help is coming. Another person had just the smaller gear in plastic but was not able to work out a way to pay. He wanted to use Paypal but don't trust them. I keep getting a lot of email about my account and I know it is phony but afraid they still capture my data. You cannot talk to these folks just email and that is it.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (4/24/06 12:49 AM) + / -
I spoke with HP tech support about the problem so many of us with the crappy 3820 have had. The tech support gal said that the option for replacement has expired 6 months prior to mid-April 2006. Well, that's the last HP I'll be buying. Canon or Lexmark ... here I come and I sure won't keep my experience a secret.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by ronnybuck (4/26/06 6:49 PM) + / -
I have the smaller gears on order from England. Been working on it for a month on how to pay. I ended up using paypal and my gears are supposed to be shipped in a couple of days and should take about 10 days. Will let all know how it works out. By the way if you try to modify the small gear and don't do it right the big gear will break. The gears I am getting are made with a tougher material but not so it will screw up the bigger gear. This gear is used in the 3820, 5110 and I believe the the v40 series. I checked all the sites suggested here in the states and they are not available any longer. There is another company that is trying to get a internet online site that makes the gears out of metal. Keep listening.

Forgot to include this in my previous post:

On 26 Jun 2005 a post was made by Pawel in forum http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/13637 which included the information:

As the printer’s mechanism makes some assumptions about the phase of the cleaning unit’s position, you’ll need to learn the way it operates without it.
Try to hold the printing head in position right after pushing the power-on button. There will no longer be a paper jam, for initially the cleaning head is keeping the head still.
So, the last stage involves some mechanics.
1. Make sure, that the mechanism inside the cleaning unit is locked in a state, when the rotation of the outer, white wheel is transferred to the cleaning part (the one moving back and forth).
2. Move the head to the right, and rotate the black, rubber thing to make the cleaning unit lock the printing head.
If you push the cleaning head too far, it will not be in phase, and all the tiny parts you have seen in the unit will be subject to even greater stress. It could break the teeth, and there will be no remedy for this, but buying a new printer...
Enjoy the repair :) Pawel

I have little idea of what this means. Would someone please explain it in precise simple terms what settings need to be made to prevent future problems. I will then add it to my guide.

Thank you everyone - Derek

the inside of the box without disassembling the front screws. How can thiw be done?
Also we have to remove the black sponge and clean it separatly?
Anyone with more progress on this problem, please respond.

I have a HP 3820 that recently died. I suppose I should be glad it lasted so long... It's a pity as it was a good little printer. I have the standard problem: the tab from the little wheel is completely broken off, and the big wheel also looks like it's seen better days (starting to bend and tear).

Somebody here suggested gluing the broken piece back on -- I have to say this did not work for me. It came off again the first time I tried to use it. Probably because I couldn't scrub all the ink off the surfaces to be glued.

Next I will have to try the paperclip trick but I'm not confident about the drilling.

Is anybody here still offering replacement gears for sale, or knows where to get them from? Preferably in qtys of 1 each. I am in the UK.

Thanks,

Nick

it doesn't respond to the computer, though i installed the new driver. When i turn it on (when it's unplugged from the PC) it makes some noise then pulls 1 page and pushes it out blank. also after the self test, when i press the resume button, it makes some sounds and then no test page comes out.

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (7/20/06 7:13 AM) + / -
I have now become expert at taking my HP 3822 printer apart to get at the offending end gears. I followed your excellant guide and after 3 failures with bedding the paper clip into the gear (my drill holes were too shallow and the clip popped out)I finally had success in so much as the clip stays in place. However, I must have lost the gear placement when I re-assembled because the cleaning tray kicks off with a loud clicking noise when it is in the back position during the initialising routine and the result is the print carrier tray jambs with that dreaded message. Do you have any advice?

David

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (7/21/06 4:02 AM) + / -
David, if you removed any of the other wheels, check they are inserted right. At one time I had the central wheel upside-down and this made the gears click.

Also make sure the paperclip isn't too tall and pushing the 2 wheels apart (this can stop the 2 big wheels meshing properly), and ensure the cover is screwed on tightly and the exposed big wheel can be turned with a fingertip.

In my case the little pawl was broken off but the big pawl was weakened and managed to sneak past it (that could be your clicking noise). I eventually had to make a paperclip-on-paperclip mechanism, and it took a few tries. I finally had to glue the paperclips into the holes.

Another thing I learnt: Don't try testing the printer until the top frame has been screwed on firmly: otherwise the paper feed mechanism misbehaves and makes terrible noises.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (7/21/06 6:59 AM) + / -
P.S. about starting positions: I got mine to work starting with:
* the cleaning tray towards the front of the printer
* the pawls about 180 degrees apart
* the insane cam/collar/clutch mechanism fully disengaged (so the peg is not inside the collar and the large cog hangs free)
* the cartrige holder out of the way (near the middle of the printer)

Thanks for everyone's info here, especially derekw's guide.

What can I say of this site. You guys are the dogs bo##ocks! You have saved my HP 3822 from the mash hammer (only a few own guns in the UK, at least legally). First I tried the sequence that Nick advised, but may not have disengaged the insane cam/collar/clutch properly as the gear fight continued . Then I checked the new pawl and bent it outwards a little. I reassembled yet again positioning as Nick advised. Warning, I have had those wretched screws out so many times that I had to cut slots in some of them as those funny star heads were becoming stripped.

And, then I connected the power lead held my breath and switched on .........................................................

Music sweet music, the whirring of cams, gears, rollers, working in harmony and then the satisfying clunk of cartridge holder engaging with the cleaning tray. No agonmising clicking of gears fighting with each other just a printer waiting to do what it I bought it to do, PRINT. I am close to tears I can tell you, especially as I had recently bought some new ink cartridges, which are not compatible with new HP printers (why is that I wonder?).

Thank you all on this site especially Derek for his excellant guide and to Nick who lifted the death sentence from HP 3822 with his advice on start up.

David

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (7/24/06 3:33 AM) + / -
Don't take my starting position as definitive, it just happened to work for me. I think what matters more than the starting position, is to make sure the pawls engage cleanly without slipping or breaking.

In my brief experience fighting a printer last week, I got the impression this mechanism really doesn't want to work and will find any way it can to go wrong! Because of the ridiculously large forces on such little components.

A final gloomy thought: the fix might not last for ever. For instance the other pawl might break. As long as the cogs don't smash, I guess you can repeat the process if necessary...

I just got replacement gears for my 3820's. I now have two up and running. It took a while as they were coming from South Africa. It was nearly 3 months but feel by experience they can be sent by a faster method. His email is stevenh_964@hotmail.com and I paid using Paypal with no problems. This gentleman has posted on these sites about the 3820 but the problem is paying since most countries Post Offices or banks don't accept our Charge cards or Postal Money Orders. It costs nothing to use Paypal and it uses your favorite Charge Card. A reminder to those who do get the small gear you will need to to reinforce the V tab on the bigger gear. Just take a hand drill and drill a hole vertically in the V of the tab the size of a average paperclip, apply a small amount super glue in V where the clip is to help hold and works great for me. Cut off excess clip so it will not touch the small gear. After sucessive breaking of the smaller gear there is a chance the bigger gear will give out too. It happened to me and the nice gentleman sent me one off of a scrap unit he had. These gears are used in a combo scanner and maybe another printer with the same cleaning basket. This is the only printer I have found to print photos on plain paper without streaking. The number of prints you do has nothing to do with the gears breaking. It is the ink drying and jamming the basket that does it. The less you use this printer the more likely the gears will break as the ink has more time to dry and harden. When you replace the gears please soak the basket in warm water preferrably in your wife's favorite sink. Just kidding. The ink is 100% water soluable but can seep into poorus material and counter tops and will take a lot of elbow grease to get it out. It came out of my formica top using some soap and water and rubbing hard. Just use an old pan or something don't care about and put plastic or a lot of paper under it just in case of a spill. Don't use any alchohol or other solvents as it makes a big mess. I hate to think of how many of the printers that have been thrown away because of this gear and poor design by HP. Just send Email to this gentleman and he will give you all the info you need. Good Luck to all and a good night.

The paperclip will work if you do it right. If the paperclip is done to the the small gear then you need to reinforce the bigger gear by adding a piece of clip in the V by drilling and adding a small amount of super glue in the V around the clip. You will need a hand drill kit that is sold at most larger stocked Radio Shacks. It is made by Kronus with the Radio Shack Number 64-2963 on it. It comes with all the drill bits you need. You have to remove the entire cleaing basket. There is a pictoral on this site in French but can be useful on disassembly. I can now do one in about 10 minutes. When you remove the gears watch the springs and where all the other gears go. After I carefully remove the gears in questions I reinstall the cover to keep the other gears and springs in place and then soak the whole basket in warm water. The black sponge is supposed to be white. You have to do a lot of soaking and squezing to get all the ink out. It is mostly black for a reason. The black cartridge especially if it is a high capacity has a tendency to drip and if you do not use the printer often it will all build up and dry which jams the mechanism breaking the gears. This is purely a HP screwup in design. First the gears are too weak and cartidge is not supposed to leak or drip. Good Luck

I conducted a paperclip 'pin' repair of the smaller gear within the cartridge cleaning box of my Deskjet 3820. It was a relatively straight forward task, thanks to Derek Whitmore's information at www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/13637 - see derekw's post of 5/9/06 (HPdj3820-GearFix.zip). Thanks Derek.

I found that the tab on the larger gear (Vee-shaped) was beginning to bend, therefore I reinforced it by installing a paperclip 'pin' down the inside of the vee tab, too, as other respondents have noted. I also reinforced both gears with a thin epoxy-resin layer too, which should reduce the likelihood of the pins working loose.

However, I did notice that the moulded plastic spindle on the inside of the removable cover, which the large gear rotates upon, was a poor fit within the bore of the large gear. This permits sideway movement (rocking) of the large gear. I am sure this contributes to the initial bending and breaking of the tabs on both gears. I manufactured a simple plastic shim, or washer, 10mm (3/8") bore x 20mm (3/4") outside diameter x around 0.8mm (1/32") thick (I made this from the lid of a plastic ice-cream tub). I inserted the washer onto the spindle of the removable gear cover, before inserting the large gear. When the whole assembly is refitted, the washer prevents any sideway movement (or rocking) between the large and small gears, reducing the likelihood of bending or unseating of the new paperclip pins.

Preventative maintenance: Inserting a plastic washer, as above, to prevent any rocking between the large and small gear should help to prevent breakage of the pins on any printer that has not yet experienced problems.

I found that it was much easier to remove ink deposits from the cleaning basket and felt pads by washing these in a solution of sugar-soap (available from most decorators or hardware stores) and water. Rinse out sugar-soap thoroughly before refitting in printer.

I hope that this information helps others.

Re: The HP 3820 problem by Tibor (8/3/06 4:12 PM) + / -
I found that practically all the problems mentioned above with this printer are really caused by the broken tab on the service station gear (or gears), that drives it back and forth to clean the print cartridges printing head. As soon as you replace or repair the broken gears, the printer will print again just fine.

Some of you wrote that these small replacement gears with the tabs are or will be available for purchase. If you know where could I order a set, please post it on this Web Site. I would be more interested in the metal replacement gears, but the plastic gears would be fine also.

Many thanks to all of you for the interesting instructions on how to fix my printer, specially to the magnificent pictures of the Check fellow.
Unfortunately in Spain we don’t get the chance to have it exchanged if not in guarantee, even if it is obviously an HP company’s design error.
I was completely happy, seeing the printer printing again, but my happiness did not last much.
As the printer was behaving erratic in long printings, I deduced there was a bad parallel communication between the computer and printer. I connected them with the USB cable, and Windows XP recognized the printer and made a copy of the driver (obviously the parallel one).I selected the copy as the default and sent a file to print.
After half a page of print, the 3820 blew up (no smoke of course, simply no lights at all).
I have checked the power supply and it is giving 16.5 V. instead the nominal 18 V., but I suppose this is not enough to keep it dead.
Does anyone know if using a wrong driver (parallel instead of USB) can damage the printer?.
Is it possible to find the schematic diagram of the printer?
I feel completely desolated.
Thank you again Juancho

Hey I had the same problem and it was defective cartridges. Check the gold tab on the bottom back side, if there is any damage it won't work. Return them to the place you bought them from, with a receipt you should get your money back or a new one. You have to be careful when inserting the cartridges b/c the bottom back gold section is delicate. Hope this helps!

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/16/06 8:02 AM) + / -
Did you get the gears and if so how much are they in US dollars?

Re: Re: The HP 3820 problem by Anonymous (12/28/06 3:42 PM) + / -
I see there are some out there still trying to use the 3820 and similar HP products with the same basket gear problems. This printer works best on the USB as the parallel gave me a lot of problems on an older machine with Win98. I have 3 of these and have so far managed to patch the gears in two and still printing beautifully. Does an excellent job on Photos. I have one waiting in the wings if this one quits. Another waiting for the patch job. I did get some gears from a guy in South Africa and going to try them this week in a broke one. If you patch the small gear with the paper clip, you need to reinforce the big gear. If you search the forums there is info on this but you need to be mechanical somewhat to do this. I learned the hard way on my first try. On the power supply check the 2 pin plug where it plugs from psu to main board and it should be 5 volts. If it is much above that then the main board most likely is fried. On the replacement gears it took 3 months and I used paypal to do it. The ones from czech republic are no doubt harder but I could not figure out a way to pay them. When the gears break you will have the printer trying to move the basket for cleaning and when it cannot sense the limits it jams and in most cases kicks out a piece of paper. I have been offered 30 of these printers and all I have to do is fixed a few but I simply do not have the time. It takes space and patience and may of these have been thrown in the dump.

Good Luck
