 | HP 5P vertical blank print area - toner problem by John Larson (10/29/04 1:54 AM) reply | + / - | My HP 5P is printing with a vertical wavy blank area about 4" from the right side of the page. The blank area looks like an analyized voice sine wave. The blank area is about 1/8" wide with a faint repeating ghost of the same pattern on the right side of the blank area. In my trouble shooting I have... Tried to clean the roller assemble using the HP program. I have also tried the using the MS paint program method (printing solid black pages and then re-printing on the opposite side soild white pages). When printing out a solid black page - the blank area is best viewed this way. Printed out a 2/3 print of the solid black page to check the fuser. The trouble seems to happen in the toner cartridge as the image is visible on the 2/3 print before it reaches the fuser. Opening the drum shield on the toner cartridge, the blank area is visible on the drum (same missing toner pattern). After I print out a 2/3 page print, the blank area seems to stop for a couple of complete pages and then the problem re-starts. The problem begin with a toner cartirdge that was almost empty. I have since replaced the toner cartridge three times (each time with a re-manufactured OfficeMax cartridge) and the problem will re-start after a couple of good pages. Thank you in advance.

It might be that there is a piece of paper (or something else) that gets in the way of the laser beam. Good luck, Brian

Laser scanners do not suddenly get clean when you replace the cartridge and then get dirty 2 pages later. Are you pulling the seal out of these cartridges? In any case, it's 100% a toner cartridge problem. The very fact that it goes away with each new cartridge, albeit for only a few pages proves that.

 | Re: HP 5P vertical blank print area - toner problem by John Larson (10/29/04 3:47 PM) reply | + / - | Moe, thanks for you input. I also think it has to do with the toner cartridge (since I can see that blank toner area on the drum inside the cartridge). But why would I have the same problem with three different cartridges in basically the same pattern and area? The first problem cartridge worked great until it was finished (empty). The second cartidge I had as a backup. The third cartridge I bought new. So, each cartridge was from a differnt lot. The blank pattern is very tight (like a miniture lighting bolt the entire (vertical) length of the printout). Is there any voltage applied to the toner cartridge? Is there any way for an electrical or magnetic interference? Nothing has moved in my space so I'm just searching. If you (or anyone) want, I can fax a copy of the image for you to see - just let me know. Thanks, J

Some years ago I came across a printer that had part of the printout blurred or missing, this was caused by some dust that was lodged underneath the scanner.

Make sure it is seated well, if you have a spare one, swap it out and see if that works! Make sure that the ground contacts are clean and unobstructed! Not getting a good ground from your toner cartridge to your printer can cause some funky images and imaging problems! good luck! jaime
