I have a DFX-5000 Plus that shuts itself off regularily while adjusting the paper using the printer's buttons. The error code it emits is 5 sets of four beeps. Can someone tell me what they mean?
Many thanks, Marty

The service manual says 5 sets of 4 beeps is a paper out or paper jam error. So it you don't see a jam then the most likely cause is the front, rear or top paper empty sensor is bad/broken.
I hope this helps,
Wes.

Well, I've got a 5000+ that is making all the beeps, but at different times... ! Posted by jrussell_75423@yahoo.com
I note that the front and rear paper indicators that light up red when it's out of paper, and green when paper is inserted, only show red-now. Changing from front to rear (pressing the button only) makes the printer try to load from that tractor, to which I get a whole bunch of beeps. (I'll have to go to that building and count them) Nothing better happens when the paper is actually moved to the appropriate tractor, either. You can only advance the paper using the micro feed or load buttons, you can NOT reverse feed. Hmmm. The paper also has a tendancy to try to jam before it enters under the print head, and I notice that the usual self-align procedure doesn't execute... (where the black paper clamp lifts and lowers a couple of times, while the print head zips back and forth to check it's limits and locate itself)
I have a sneaking suspicion that there is something stuck under that strip mentioned in the other posts... and the way the thing behaves, I wonder if this printer can be re-programmed by holding a button in while cycling power...
Wes, if you could please re-post or e-mail that ZIP file, it would DEFINITELY help...
In the meantime, I'm off to start seriously cleaning the printer out and see just how much crud and paper shavings are where they shouldn't be... J Russell

The paper sensors in the tractors can fail but it is not very common. If there is paper in the printer, it is backed out until the sensor is triggered. The printer then knows where the leading edge of the paper is.
The most common fault on these is the cover switch at the rear left getting bent or failing. This causes odd faults because the low voltage cover switch on the middle top right of the machine tells the electronics that the cover is shut but there is no drive voltage for the motors due to the failure of the rear switch.
Remove the left side cover and unplug the connector for the rear cover switch and short it with a paper clip.
As for the jamming before the printhead... Open the front flap and look up. Just above the front tractors at each side of the printer are 2 screws which hold the paper support plate. The paper support plate can wear out and the plastic part tear. As a temporary fix use some wide tape over the whole width of the plastic coated part.
The printer does not self-align when loading. It has a paper width sensor next to the printhead which measures the width of the paper. The other thing it does at load is roll the printhead against the paper to measure the thickness.
I have a bunch of DFX 5000+ printers which shuts down (power itself off) while printing a lenghty report. The printer then fails to turn on again even after several tries at flicking the power on switch. Trouble shooting does not reveal the fault. I have approximately eight of these printers which is exhibiting the same symptoms. At times the printers will show sign of turning on with the LEDs lit however the printer does no go into ready state to allow interaction from the control pannel or to allow printing.
Can anyone shed some light on this problem? HELP! HELP!!!

The printheads have thermal protection built in. If it is working properly, when the printhead heats up the printer will slow down. If the temperature continues rising the printer will go into pause until it has cooled back to operating temp.
I used to look after a lot of these and saw a few where the thermal protection had failed causing the printer to do the same as yours.
My recommendation would be to replace the printhead with a brand new one. They come in a kit with instructions and I think can be changed by and end user. The instructions MUST be followed. It is very important that the head size is loaded into the printer.
They are quite expensive, so the decision is yours! As you have 8 of these, you will need one eventually.
My DFX5000 + on powering up goes to the home position once and then gives 5 sets of 4 beeps then the control panel does not respond, though if you press both front and rear tractor switches they toggle between red and green. If you move the tractor select cam it changes to rear and front tractor selection. Please someone help as i have the problem for 3 weeks and becoming quite embarassing

5 sets of 4 beeps indicates a paper out or paper jam error. Check the front, rear and top paper end sensors for a paper jam or damage. Hope this helps.

probably the tractor feed sensor is going out. Just replaced one in a OKI 4410 for the same issue. Good luck they aren't to fun to replace in that model. On my machine I manually taped the sensor down to verify that was the problem. Once I did that my intermittent errors went away.
