49.XX PRINTER ERROR A firmware error occurred 1. Press CANCEL JOB to clear the print job from the printer memory. 2. Turn the printer off, and then turn the printer on. 3. Try printing a job from a different software application. If the job prints, go back to the first application and try printing a different file. (If the message only appears with a certain software application or print job, contact the software vendor for assistance.) 4. If the message persists with different software applications and print jobs, disconnect all cables to the printer that connect it to the network or printer. 5. Turn the printer off. 6. Remove all memory DIMMs or third-party DIMMs from the printer. (Do not remove the firmware DIMM in the lowest DIMM slot.) 7. Remove all EIO devices from the printer. 8. Turn the printer on. 9. If the error no longer exists, install each DIMM and EIO device one at a time, making sure to turn the printer off and back on as you install each device. 10. Replace a DIMM or EIO device if you determine that it causes the error. 11. Remember to reconnect all cables that connect the printer to the network or computer. 12. If the error persists, replace the firmware DIMM. 13. Replace the formatter. This error is usually caused by a bad formatter board.

i thank you for the response but apparently, a 49 error on a 4si is different, on the 4si i've been told this has to do with the printer thinking there is paper in the manual feed slot, possibly a problem with either the PIU or the DC contoller....i will be able to test with a new PIU in a few days so i should be able to rule that out...but if anyone else has any other suggestions or ideas feel free to share

thanks

Re: LaserJet 4si by dmzcompute (3/18/04 6:18 PM) reply + / -
Jonas,

I do not where you get your information. On all HP printers that display a error message and that includes the 4SI, you get a 13.X or 13.XX error for a paper jam. If paper is supposed to be in a tray and is not, like requesting legal paper and both trays have letter, you will get a message of MF load legal. The only thing I can think is that you have a special program sending a job and you get an error on the computer specific to the application giving you the 49 error. Dimon is 100% correct of the meaning of a 49.XXXX error.

Jonas,

Another thing comes to mind. Are you sure this is a HP4SI or is it one of the printers below. Remember many manufactuers used cannon engines for thier printers, but had there own formatter and firmware. Maybe your printer is not a 4SI.

this is a genuine HP LaserJet 4si, the error code was looked up in a gunine HP 4si service manual....its just not very descriptive

on the newer printers Dimon is dead on, that is the troubleshooting process with a 49 error

thanks for the response

Jonas, have a look at this page

forums1.itrc.hp.com 1079720864187 28353475&threadId=495209

I've been on 4si's for a number of years, and never come across a 49 Error.

Re: LaserJet 4si by dmzcompute (3/19/04 10:44 AM) reply + / -
Jonas you have wrong information. As with Trev, I have been working of 4SI printer for over 10 years and have never seen any documentation for a 49 error as a paper issue. I have 2 service manuals, one of them from 1992,

PrintSir by Anonymous (4/1/04 11:45 AM) reply + / -
It is a dangerous prospect but if a hacker wanted to they could anything they wanted to on a printer at ip address 12.110.7.5 because it is unprotected on port 80. It is a dedicated IP Address and if someone ran a port scan they would probably find that the ip address is vulnerable and is prone to security flaws.

Re: LaserJet 4si by jonas (4/2/04 1:30 PM) reply + / -
To update, i got to try another paper input unit in the printer and the error is gone. Some advice i recived from another fourm said this also could have been caused by the dc controller, but i cant confirm or deny this, they also told me that a '49 remove page' error was very rare, which i would belive because there isnt alot of information about it

and now a 49 error is universally know to be a firmware type error so that further confuses things....but i thank everyone that took the time to respond to my post.

Re: LaserJet 4si by PMM (3/25/05 10:51 AM) reply + / -
For all you naysayers, there does exist a document at HP that lists this error. Here is a cut and paste example:

49 Remove Page
HP LaserJet IIISi, 4Si series printers
A sheet of paper was in the manual feed guides when the printer powered on, or a paper tray with a sheet of paper in its manual feed guides was inserted while the printer was powering on.

Remove the sheets or the tray until the power cycle is complete.

DMZ, you are wrong. I think you owe Jonas an apology. There was, or is, an error code 49 that describes the problem experienced by him. It is at:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com

Never say never!

Re: LaserJet 4si by dmzcompute (3/25/05 1:00 PM) reply + / -
PMM,

You are 100% correct, but, it must have appeared in the first manual for the 4SI. Subsequent manuals did not doucment the error and as was stated by Trev who has also worked on them for a long time, he has never seen one. 49 errors from HP are now exclusively for firmware or software/firmware errors. We all try to help based on our experience and doucmentation we have in hand. I unforturnatley do not have the time to search thru HPs website to dig up this document as you did. Thanks for finding it since it may help someone in the future.

Re: LaserJet 4si by Trev Pearson (3/26/05 12:58 AM) reply + / -
And I've still never seen one. Nor a mention in any manual. As for being a Naysayer, we on the Forum give the best advice we can, we don't make this stuff up. No-one can be 100% right 100% of the time. Have you never made a mistake in your postings? Thanks for the link, at least we all learned something from that.

Re: LaserJet 4si by PMM (3/29/05 2:06 PM) reply + / -
Well, I guess if the truth were known, I have made a mistake or two in my long lifetime. But, I have learned to not say that something does or does not exist just because I have not experienced it or don't know of it. I wasn't aware of that error code either, until I looked it up, and I hate to do research on HP's websites! I was just lucky to find it.
Didn't intend to ruffle feathers, it was all said with tongue-in-cheek!

Re: LaserJet 4si by PMM (3/29/05 2:15 PM) reply + / -
I just found a 4si User's Guide that is downloadable from HP that includes this error code in its list. It is at:

Re: LaserJet 4si by dmzcompute (3/29/05 3:32 PM) reply + / -
Then why did you post 4 times today with the same information? If you did not intend to ruffle feather you would not have posted as you did today. One post would have been enough.

Re: LaserJet 4si by moe (3/29/05 5:10 PM) reply + / -
I was wondering that myself. Must be up to 3 or 4 mistakes now.

Notice the times in the repeated posts? I don't have a clue about how that happened.

Did you figure out why your server was posting messages more than once? Your silence is deafening. You were quick to jump on with dmz but you both fell silent when the post times were brought to your attention. If you will check, you will see that other people's posts have also been repeated! I

Re: LaserJet 4si by sointense (5/7/05 12:26 PM) reply + / -
I have a 4si that willgive me an internal jam message a second or two after the lead edge of a letter size sheet of paper reaches the final exit rollers. If I clean the exit rollers and the rollers just after the fuser unit, it will pass paper for a short period of time.

Any suggesttions

Re: LaserJet 4si by Trev Pearson (5/8/05 12:46 AM) reply + / -
You would be better off starting a new subject, rather than tagging onto the end of an old subject. That way we would see your query sooner.

Anyhow, try this. Change the printer settings so that the paper exits at the rear, drop down the rear tray and try printing again. I think that the Job Offset flag is worn and causing the jam.

Trev

Re: LaserJet 4si by moe (5/8/05 2:50 PM) reply + / -
I don't know what you're cleaning the last roller in the job offset assy with, but if it's helping for a brief time, then replace the roller. It's not that easy a job as you have to remove the top off of the printer and remove the job offset assy. If you need a roller, I think I have them in stock.

Re: LaserJet 4si by nutsch (9/14/05 8:32 PM) reply + / -
I got the 49 error. There's no paper in the manual feed tray. Take the trays out and reboot and there's no 49 error. Put the trays back in and the error is there. Resetting to factory original settings does not fix it. Help.

Re: LaserJet 4si by dmzcompute (9/14/05 8:51 PM) reply + / -
There are two connections on the right side of the PIU. One goes to the motor in the PIU and the other J15 attaches inside the cavity. Check to make sure J15 is attached.

Thanks, I'll check it & get back.

How do I clean the roller on my printer? Everything I print has dark streaks down the paper. I have replaced the ink cartridge, so that's not the problem. I don't want to spend mega bucks having someone come out to my house if I can do it myself. Thanks for any suggestions!

Mel

Re: Re: LaserJet 4si by Anonymous (2/17/06 4:44 AM) reply + / -
Ms. Melanie,

Maybe this will help you out:

First off, The Transfer Roller ( the black spongy roller ) that
sits underneath the toner cartridge should not be touched
or cleaned! ( This is charged by High Voltage to "Pull" the
image off the drum and onto the paper - touching or cleaning
it will affect the transfer and the blacks will become grey! )

If you know that the toner cartridge is good,
the streaks may be caused by the FUSER unit
( the part that gets hot and melts the toner powder into
the paper. )

The fuser unit has 4 very long screws, which are easy to remove.
then the fuser unit slides to the left and you can lift it up
and remove it:

You'll probably notice that the teflon coated roller is
worn out causing toner to stick to the fuser and cause
print defects.

You can order a Fuser from MARKETPOINT.COM, DepotAmerica.com,
or PartsNow! ( get a refurb. w/ exhchange - has 6 month warranty)
You can get the entire FUSER MAINTENANCE kit for under $100
which includes the FUSER unit, Transfer Roller, MP Tray1 Roller,
Trays 2/3 Rollers, and the D-roller for the duplexer!
I Personally like dealing with Marketpoint or Depot America !

Anyways, the fuser is relatively easy to replace yourself -
just 4 screws to remove it.

I service HP printers for a living and own my own business:

One thing I've noticed due to the age of the 4SI printers,
is that the SOLENOID CLUTCHES become sticky:

If jams or the print is shifted/offset, usually the solenoids
must be refurbished by removing them, cleaning the sticky old
gummy glue/felt pads w/ 90% isopropyl alcohol, and then replacing
the old felt pads w/ some kind of sticker or really good
3M commercial grade electrical tape to prevent any magnetic flux
from causing the plates to stick from magnetism:

A Really good, competent tech will have to due this, as the
entire front Paper Pickup Assembly must be removed to get to
the REGISTRATION Assembly's Solenoid - which is usually the
cause of jams/ offset registered print.
This old school printer has ALOT of screws to be removed to
remove the covers and assemblies! Better get someone who
knows what they're doing if you need this kind of service
performed. ( should take a little over 1Hr, but no more than 2Hrs
to do a GOOD thorough job of refurbishing and cleaning:
Must use a service vac w/ special toner filters to clean with
or a regular vacuum will scatter the toner back into the air!
and NEVER use canned air w/ laser printers! )

While the Paper Input Unit has been removed, it is a good
idea to refurbish the solenoids on it's circuit boards!

I don't have the service manual for this printer, but am
VERY familiar with it as I've serviced HP laserjets from
almost 15 Years - and know what I'm doing !
I have customers who still have this model and have
worked on several 4SI's recently.

Hope this helps you!
( I'd service it for you, but I'm in Tallahassee, FL ! )

HP's PARTS STORE website shows parts diagrams and part numbers
for their printers just FYI.

Hello Anonymous you seem to be the one to talk to.
My 4si ran out of toner. I bought a new in box HP cart with a date of 03 2004S. After I replaced it I am getting 14 NO TONER CART. I tracked the cart lever to box under front marked with inisible laser what is the box called and what does it do?
I checked for the intensity adjustments on side of cart. It was in the other position as compared to old cart.

Thank for any help

John

Re: LaserJet 4si by Stephen (3/2/07 4:56 AM) reply + / -
You are looking at the laser/scanner, the lever has nothing to do with detecting the cartridge presence, it blocks the invisible laser beam when the cartridge is not installed.

Try putting the old cartridge back in, if it is detected then the new cartridge is bad.

Hi -
I have an HP 4SI that was recently refurbished -- supposedly everything was serviced and replaced.

worked fine for a while, now every page comes out very dark -- almost black. I tried a new toner, same thing. I have the contrast set all the way to 'light'.

any ideas?

many thanks for your thoughts,

Chris

Re: LaserJet 4si by nutsch (3/23/07 2:10 PM) reply + / -
I donated my 4si to a printer repair shop for parts. It is bullet-proof when it works but when it doesn't, ya need to get out your checkbook.

Re: LaserJet 4si by Trev Pearson (3/23/07 6:10 PM) reply + / -
I would start with replacing the HV power supply. Thats the box of tricks with the 'contrast' control on.

Re: Re: Re: Re: LaserJet 4si by Anonymous (3/24/07 9:32 AM) reply + / -
Since I last posted my question I have obtained a service manual.
I also found this web page on HP.com

http://h20141.www2.hp.com

Which is an index for exploded views and some part #s of the 4SI.

The No Cart found problem was the switches on the right inside.

Also I had an intermit paper jam at the upper output.

I disassembled the roller assemlies and resurfaced the rubber rollers and all is well.

Re: LaserJet 4si by ChrisHackman (7/2/09 2:26 PM) reply + / -
I had the exact same error message "49 Remove page". Althjough this IS usually a com error, in my case it was a physical error. The 4si paper cassettes are not spring loaded like some other HP printers. The paper is elevated by an arm inside the printer. As the cassettes age, there is a noise dampening foam pad that deteriorates and becomes gummy.

Clean off the cassette and the metal baseplate (isopropyl alcohol seems to work as does taping over the offending sticky areas with scotch tape) and the error message dissappears and the printer works fine. Hope this helps.
Chris

57.1 is related to the drum motor
