HP 2500 by Ed (11/4/03 10:09 AM) +2 + / -
I have used up my allotted 5000 color images on the HP2500 image drum. Further printing is locked out. Print quality is still pristine. Is there a way to override and continue printing?

Re: HP 2500 allotted usage by TF (11/22/03 4:18 PM) +2 + / -
We are at the same point. The printer printed perfectly to the last page but does not want to continue. Wants us to replace the drum. We do not agree!

Are the trying to set us up?

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (11/22/03 4:41 PM) +3 + / -
I do not know what to tell you. The drum life is supposted to be between 6000-8000 copies depending on how many color vs black only prints are made. I assume there is a chip on the drum unit which tell it when it should be replaced. One thing you can try, I do not know what will happen, but there is a NVRAM reset procedure which resets all the counts in ROM and places the machine back to factory default. This will not work if the drum uses a chip to tell when it is done. The NVRAM reset is done by powering off the machine. Press and hold the Go button. Turn the printer on and continue to hold the Go button. After the Go, Ready, and Attention LED's tuirn on, continue holding for at least 20 seconds. During this process, the Attention, Ready and Go LED's will each turn off. Release the Go button. The device LEDs will begin cycling from front to back. The NVRAM init process runs unitl the printer is in the Ready state.

Re: HP 2500 Drum by TF (11/22/03 5:06 PM) + / -
Powered on the machine while holding down the big green <1> button on the HP LaserJet 2500 and waited for the indicator lights to drop of one by one until all suddenly lit up! Released the button and the printer returned to stand by. Printing could now be continued and the drum light was off! Thanks 'dmzcompute' for the great advise. We just delayed spending $170 and can release our color documnts as planned!

I tried it, didn't seem to help. Perhsps the drum is infact depleted, but the last copy looked just fine.

Missing something in the directions???

you have to press to red cancel button after the procedure explained above. now everything is fine.

Re: HP 2500 by Igor (2/8/04 12:18 PM) +1 + / -
from service manual:
To perform a NVRAM init
1 Turn the printer off.
2 Press and hold the GO button.
3 Turn the printer on and continue to hold the GO button.
4 After the Go, Ready, and Attention LEDs turn on, continue holding for at least 20 seconds.
During this process, the Attention, Ready, and Go LEDs will each turn off.
5 Release the GO button.
6 The device LEDs will begin cycling from front to back. The NVRAM-init process runs until the
printer is in the Ready state.

dmzcompute and igor RULE!! by Lan Admin (3/23/04 2:41 PM) +1 + / -
Thanks a million you guys! Your fix for the HP2500 drum problem works like a champ! We purchased 4 of those printers for our busy office only to have the drums go bad within a month. Not having any additional spending money in our budget until NEXT YEAR.....we were stuck with 4 dead printers. UNTIL NOW!! After applying your solution, we now have all 4 printers back in service! And the printouts are just as pretty as ever. Just goes to show that the drums aren't worn out at all. I think that HP is just "creating a consumable". And it's shameful! Just like the expiration date chip in their ink cartridges. Just a ripoff! I expected better from a supposid pioneer in the industry.

THANKS AGAIN!! Nowhere else on the whole internet is this solution!! You guys rock!

Re: HP 2500 by Roger Lee (3/24/04 4:14 AM) + / -
Really great advice.

We have one of these printers in our school office and we'd forgotten to order spare toners - the black had ran out, on top of that the image drum reported that it needed changing and at Ј139 a time it's quite expensive for a school.

After doing what you recommended everything is now working fine and all warning lights have gone out including the one for the black toner.

Your advise has saved us and others a lot of money, maybe I should start buying some shares in HP :o)

Thanks...

I have done this procedure, the unit says ready, but nothing will print.

Re: HP 2500 by Darrin (3/30/04 1:05 PM) + / -
Ok.... goof ball techie here. My printer is part of my wireless system here, so if yours is also, pull the wireless card, before doing the reset. Otherwise (not to difficult) you will be resetting the wireless settings on the card.

Thanks for all the info here.. rock on!!

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Brian (1/6/05 6:40 AM) + / -
I'm wondering if this process will fix my problem???

I've aquired a used Color LJ2500N and am trying to put it on my home network. The printer was originally part of a local business's network and had it's IP address manually assigned via the web interface. Now that I've got it home, the manually assigned IP address does not exist in my home environment - so I'm unable to access the web interface. Will a NVRAM init erase the manually assigned IP address, allowing it to pick up a new address from my router?

Thanks.

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (1/6/05 10:03 AM) + / -
You really do not have to do this. Just go to hp.com and click on support and drivers. Choose software and type 615N for the product as that is the network card which ships with the printer. Then just choose simple network installation software. In fact here is a link.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com

You can have the software find your printer and set it up or if it can not just print a test page which should also print a copy of the jetdirect settings. In those settings is the hardware address for the card and the software allows you to search for a certain hardware address.

What marvelous things (a) the internet (b) This forum (c) you guys, all are!

This printer has been irritating me for days and now it's printing happily again and I've saved loadsadosh - hooray.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (2/14/05 4:30 PM) + / -
Hi all,

I had this problem today and could find no help on the Net. As such, I am replying to all the ones I looked at which DIDN'T have a fix with what worked for me...

I had the problem that my printer (Canon BJC210) would not stop printing. At all. It was obvious it was a spool problem since when the PC was switched off and the printer was on, it wasn't printing. It would resume printing when the OS loaded.

I am using Windows XP professional. I loaded up a command prompt and typed:

Net Stop Spooler

The printing stopped momentarily, hooray!

Then, I went to Start -> Run and typed in:

%systemroot%\system32\spool\printers

I then deleted everything out of that folder (careful now).

Back in the command prompt, I typed:

Net Start Spooler

And the printing had ceased.

Hope someone out there finds this helpful.
-Tim

Re: HP 2500 by sue o (4/26/05 6:36 AM) + / -
You must replace the chip. Check with the outfit that sold you the toner to refill your black cartridge as they surely must have them. Surprised that you were not sold the chip when you purchased the toner. I was sure that every toner refiller knew that you must replace the chips on the toner cartridges.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (6/16/05 3:18 AM) + / -
take out the toner cartridges.there are blue arrows either end of the chassis where the cartridge sits.if these are not exactly in line your mcn has lost its timing and has to be reset.this is a major strip down and should only be attempted if you know what to look for as timming marks are not obvious.
CALL A PRINTER ENG,HP PRINTER ENG PREFERED.

Re: HP 2500 by donald (6/16/05 10:06 AM) + / -
You can not reset the toner cartridges, just the drum. Once the chip goes it has to be replaced.

As for memory, I would just do a google search for HP printer memory. You may have to buy HP printer memory if you already have sticks in the printer. If you do not have any sticks buy third party memory, it is a lot cheaper.

I can get you prices on OEM (HP) memory if you are interested.

Re: HP 2550L by Damsleth (7/3/05 11:15 AM) + / -
Hi all,

I have a 2550L that sometimes gives me a blinking red light and a steady green light over the big green button when I try to print. Sometimes, this also happens *after* I have printed. Pressing the Go-button usually makes the print start, but it is not a good solution to have to press a button on the printer every time I try to print. Also, sometimes it prints a test page ("Look how great your printer is!")

There was an error code on the status page that reffered to something like "incorrect paper size". This is weird, since all I'm doing is A4.

The HP tech-guy told me to set the driver to always pull paper from "tray 2" insted of "automatic", but this did absolutely nothing for me.

I'm running om a Mac with Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger".

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (7/3/05 12:11 PM) + / -
I am not familar with MAC systems, but you have to make sure that the correct paper size is chosen in the driver which matches the paper size set in the printer. If not you will get that type of error. Also the reason for the test page is by pressing the go button for more than 3 seconds will always generate a test page. The reason why the light comes on and you have to press the button is the job called for a page size or page type (plain, letterhead, etc) which is different for the setting in the printer. In effect if you had a menu display it would be asking Load ?? paper in tray ? and hit go to continue and hitting go would tell the printer to use the paper in the tray instead of what the job call for. I hope you understood what I was saying.

Re: HP 1500L by Lin. C. (8/9/05 5:29 PM) + / -
I replaced 2 toners on my 1500L then the image drum light flashed and the printer wouldn't work. I turned off the power, held the green button down and turned it on, as instructed. It took more than 20 seconds. Then finally it stopped making noises, and the yellow toner and drum lights came on. I pressed the orange button (above the big green one), and the printer was ready.

Re: HP 2500 by Bill Cave (8/10/05 9:13 AM) + / -
Seems the catch is to hit the cancel button a few times while the lights are cycling. I finally got it to work.
Next question. Any idea how many pages you can print after doing a reset like this>

Re: HP 2500L by Amerinews (8/13/05 11:33 AM) + / -
Have had an HP 2500L for two years working fine. Recently moved house where have converted barn for office. After 7 weeks with all OK, printed pages now have inch wide toner smear down the left margin. Firstly replaced image drum (still 70% unused) but problem persists. Have had some small strips of plasticized paper come out of the machine - unlike anything I ever put in, and thought this might be the cause but problem remains. Could these small strips be from something within that has given up? Could it be dampness from plasterwork in new barn/office affecting the paper? Didn't think this would be a major factor. Also sometimes paper comes out badly creased on the side that is smeared. Is there any way of clearing or cleaning the entire paper run - other than the 'print cleaning sheet' in toolbox?

Re: HP 2500 by moe (8/13/05 12:13 PM) + / -
I'd suspect the fuser assembly. That is behind the rear door of the printer. Relatively easy to remove it. If you need any guidance, there's a service manual in the reference section. For what that drum and the fuser cost, you could have bought a whole new color laser printer.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Amerinews (8/14/05 8:28 AM) + / -
Moe, you are absolutely right. When I took out the fuser assembly and turned it around I could see that the stange grey plastic paper that had been coming out in small strips is the left-hand one and three quarter inches of the feeder guard - I suppose that with this missing to feed the paper through smoothly, this is alsop causing the creasing as one side of the paper stalls on the bare roller feed.
Is this a part that can be replaced by a moderately intelligent user or am I in for the whole fuser assembly - in which case as you say it may be cheaper to replace the printer since my image drum replacement was free.

Re: HP 2500 by moe (8/14/05 10:36 AM) + / -
Fuser fixing film. As far as I know it's unavailable except as an entire fuser assembly. The new HP2600Ns are twice as fast, have an actual paper cassette and are going in the neighborhood of $350 new.

Got a 2500 that is jamming out of tray 2 after feeding paper about 2-3 inches. I replaced the tray 2 roller and the separation pad in the tray. It worked for 1 print, then right back to the same jam problem. Switched trays with another printer and it worked fine for a few pages, now back to same problem. Paper has no rips, creases, etc on the page. Flags swing freely. Paper path is clear. Parts supplier says needed parts are discontinued (they suggested it needs the whole feeder unit for tray 2). Any insight on this one???

Thanks.

Thanks for all the advice on restarting my printer after the imaging drum had come to the end of its prescribed life. I had to do the procedure a few times before all the lights were out. The printer was able to print a test page (pressing the green button). It said that the printer had a non HP imaging drum and a non HP black toner cartrige (the 10% warning light for it was on at the time). This seems to indicate that it is possible to reset the toner cartriges by doing the NVram procedure. As the printer still would not print, I uninstalled the printer software and installed it again. The printer has been humming ever since and I am in heaven!!!

Re: HP 2500 by Bill Cave (10/31/05 5:20 AM) + / -

I can't seem to get the resetting procedure to work for the HP 2550 L... Is it possible? Or does this procedure only work for models prior to the 2550 L? Please respond.

Re: HP 2500 by Bill Cave (11/2/05 4:38 AM) + / -
It will work for a 2500 so I sure don't see any reason why it would not work for your model. I have a 2500 and to be honest I tried it half a dozen times before being successful. The key is to hit the cancel button repeatedly while your doing it. That is how it worked for me.

Re: HP 2500 by Denver_CT (11/3/05 4:08 AM) + / -
Ok, Bill... I'll give it a whirl... But I've already ordered the Imaging Drum... But I won't give up just yet! My thinking was, that because the 2550 L is a later model, perhaps the folks @ HP caught wind of the fact that people were resetting their drums, so they put in a sort of counter against it in their later models? It's possible...

Re: HP 2500 by Bill Cave (11/3/05 4:50 AM) + / -
I did the very same thing...I bought a drum and it's been sitting in a box now for almost 4 months. Good luck with it and let us know if you're successful.

Well here is one for ya...I ran out of Magenta and Cyan a few days ago and the printer would not print. New carts will be delivered today.

So just for giggles, I did the super NVRAM gimmick on the link you sent,,,,and then the process mentioned at the beginning of this thread. It reset the colors and I can print again. Too funny. Wonder how long those new cartridges will sit here with the imaging drum now before it goes stoooopid on me again?
What a racket...and it's so kewel to beat em at their own game.

BTW, my email address is BillCave@PhoinixGroup.com

Still no joy for me with the 2550 L.. Maybe I should sell it and invest in a 2500? lol

My email address is dkeytle@gmail.com

Thanks for all the attempts at helping me.

One quick question though.. Should this process be done while the printer is connected to the pc, or should the printer be disconnected from the pc? In other words, should I yank the damn USB cable outta the machine for me to get it to work??

Re: HP 2500l by Mich (11/8/05 3:40 PM) + / -
I have a hp 2500l, it was printing fine, a day ago, it print a page fine, but the left and right side it did print all yellow, so i reprint the page and it did print yellow again, i took out the image drum, reinserted, and it did make a wiare sound, like cracking, so a took out again the image drum and it look fine, the sound came out from de rear, by the courusel, now there is not much noise but it only prints the half of the page, it seems like the other half does not get toner, the fuser works because there is no toner loose.

Any ideas of what it may happend to my printer?

i have test it with other drum and it does not work, my drum works fine in other printer.

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (11/8/05 3:52 PM) + / -
Did you turn the power off and then back on. If not try that and see what happens. The only other thing I can suggest is to remove all the toner cartridges and then reinstall.

Re: HP 2500l by mich (11/8/05 4:04 PM) + / -
thank you for responding.

yes i did remove all the toner cartridges, i did check if anything, objet, is there. i reinstall all the toner cartridges and drum back, i have turn off and on the printer. the printer seems to work as normal, the only problem is that it prints half of the page, but the blue color prints past the half page, this is when i send a Print Quality Troubleshooting Page.

my toners have more than 50% toner and is the firt time i have buy all 4 cartridges, the drum i just remplace the chip. and it has more than 80% printing.

I can't seem to get them out. Does anybody know how I can fix this. I've tried pressing all the buttons and I fear I've made it worse..

Help...

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (11/16/05 10:15 PM) + / -
For the sheet coming out the top, just open the back and remove the fuser. For the sheet on the inside, remove the transfer unit and it should give you access to it. Do that also with the fuser removed.

Re: Re: Re: HP 2500l by Anonymous (11/17/05 8:46 AM) + / -
That is possible...we have noticed that the drum and/or toner carousel seem to be off allignment on the left side where we are not getting any toner discharge. Could that be symptomatic of a drum that's at the end of it's life (or damaged beyond repair)? Would appreciate knowing if you have heard of this issue with the from anyone else with the HP 2500L. Thanks again.

THANKS dmzcompute. My printer is happily printing away again..

I've just purchased a used 2550n which is close to end of life on toner(especially yellow) and drum. Will the reset procedures also work on this model?

Re: HP 2500 by rc (11/20/05 3:16 PM) + / -
Has anyone tried to re-install the printer info after the NVRAM init procedure as the link (http://www.laserquipt.com) says it wipes/deletes all printer info? BTW, is this a good machine since I've seen rating positive and negative although noise issue I read doesn't appear to be a big factor here??

Re: HP 2500 by Stephen (11/20/05 5:20 PM) + / -
When the toner cartridge is low resetting the NVRAM is not going to magically make there be more toner in the cartridge.

Re: RETEADO CHIP TONER HP 2500 by Anonymous (11/22/05 5:33 PM) + / -

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (11/25/05 7:56 AM) + / -
I own a 2550 aswell disappointed that your couldn't get the reset to work. I haven't had the need to try it yet but I will inform you when I do on this thing, HP sent me a new drum recently because I was having a problem with the pronter, it ended up being the fuse so I was sent a new fuser aswell. When I had to send back the drum because it wasn't the problem I sent them back my older one, so I probably won't need to reset it for a while.
I'll keep you informed

This seems to be a good thread to post this in... I have a 2500 that will print a page or two, and then, after sitting for 2 minutes, two days, it "clunks" once and then the red light comes on solid and I have to turn the printer off and back on, only to repeat the process.. I`ve done the NVRAM reset out of curiousity, but it did not help.. My yellow toner is down to about 330 pages, fwiw, but I dont think ? thats the issue?

JacquieW, I have your same problem. I just took mine out of the box (unused for 3 years and no warranty) and have the same steady lights. They refuse to cycle. Hope someone can help us.

Re: HP 2500 by Bill Cave (11/30/05 1:30 PM) + / -
I think if I had the issue you all are having, I would remove the ink cartrides, the fuser, etc. Then do a new power cycle and replace the fuser and then all of the ink drums back in one at a time...make sure all contacts are clean since this item has setup for a while. Make sure the tray has paper in it also.

As a last resort try the nvram reset instructions mentioned at the beginning of this thread. Hope this helps.

Re: HP 2500 by sdbridges3 (12/1/05 7:39 AM) +1 + / -
Tried removing all the cartridges but the carousel would not rotate to let me remove two of them. After removing fuser, tried the reset procedure, but to no avail. Have done the reset procedure more than a dozen times with no luck. Also noticed that it was extremely difficult to load all cartridges initially as I had to play with the reset process just to rotate them. Lights still won't cycle. I am getting a bad feeling about this...

Re: HP 2500 by Bill Cave (12/1/05 7:52 AM) + / -
Ekkkk, this does not sound good. You have to get those two out at some point. Did you make a note of the colors that you can't remove? Perhaps put the two you can remove back in and then just try to remove the ones that are being difficult by themselves? I think I am not of much help to you in this....Might call HP and give them the SN....for warranty possibilities.

Hey Laserguy did you find anything out about
that tray 2 jam issue.
Exactly what I'm getting..

can you email ryanguy19@yahoo.com if you find out anything

Re: Re: HP 2500 by sdbridges3 (12/1/05 1:17 PM) + / -
When my Tray-2's jam that way with my HP 2300's (I have some in a classroom environment)it is almost always because the paper tray extender (blue button?)is not flush against the stack of paper.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (12/1/05 2:28 PM) + / -
You may have to remove the top cover. There is a release bar on the right side under and a little to the back of the cover flap in back. If you can see it (not easy), stick a small flat blade screwdriver under the flap and lift it up to release the brake. If you can not see it then you will have to remove the top cover.

Why don't you people put your comments and questions in ENGLISH?

Re: HP 2500 by pcrmike (12/6/05 4:56 PM) + / -
Because some people cannot speak English. That is why they put it in Spanish or whatever they speak. Why don't you post in Spanish? I know why, because you speak English. Es bien, porque tu no puede sera' media del hombre como su madre es. :-) PCRMike

Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (12/6/05 5:13 PM) + / -
Well, the entire idea of this BB is to have ones questions answered. If you post in Chinese, Spanish, Whaverer you just reduce the likely hood of receiving an answer, since 99.9% of people on this system speak English. So PcMike since you know this language you make sure you help all these people out.

Re: HP 2500 by moe (12/6/05 5:23 PM) + / -
Never heard of Roy Mercer till I just went to his website.

Re: HP 2500 by pcrmike (12/6/05 5:24 PM) + / -
I do when I can, thank you. Just because you have limited your resources more than others isn't their fault, and vice versa. I have a friend in South Africa who speaks 7 languages, but if he were to post here, he would do so in English, because as you say, he would have the best chance. If he did not know English, he would do so in what he knew and hope for help. Have you ever hoped for help? Be kinder to those less linguistically endowed than yourself. :-) PCRMike

Why don't you get off your high horse Mike...that person was not flamed in the first place, and truth be known he/she stated a very true fact. And there are plenty of people who know more than one language..so what, big deal.

But also you have to admit that especially in places like Florida/CA all of the Spanish speaking people take the lazy way out and want us to even post the speed signs in Spanish because they are too lazy to learn the language of this country, and it ain't Spanish. Try going to a WalMart in Miami...you better not even think about speaking English cause you won't be able to find the bathroom.

There are a couple of Canon threads that are all in Tagalog. I've always wondered if maybe they were using the forum for drug deals or terrorist plots. Since there aren't any Tagalog translators and I don't know anyone who speaks it, I'll just have to assume they really are printer related threads.

Re: HP 2500 by pcrmike (12/7/05 5:25 AM) + / -
Joyce, you are right. I took it as a flaming but it probably wasn't. I do agree though, that if you want to move to America, live here, and have a job here, LEARN THE LANGUAGE. It is just a little hard to tell where they are on this board, whether in the States or outside. I did just reread what I had written and you are right, it does sound like I have a chip on my shoulder. Well, I don't and am sorry if it appeared I do. It was my fault, I responded like he had just shot my dog or something. As for the Tagalog posts, if you reply in Ilocano it makes them mad. :-) PCRMike

My HP 2500L has developed a small hole in the flexible belt that presses the ink as the paper passes over the fuser roller. Therefore the ink at that point doesn't get fused but rubs off.Although 3 years old, the printer has had only light usage (domestic). I can buy a complete new fuser unit but they're quite expensive. Does anyone know (a) whether I can buy a new replacement belt (preferably in UK) and (b) how to fit it, or where to find out?

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (12/10/05 6:44 PM) + / -
Go to the diagram in the link below and identify the part and then do a google search by the part number. As to instructions, I doubt anyone has them since the item is not really a fix it yourself item since it is considered a consumable.

It appears the NVRAM reset only works on the 2500 and not the 2550. You will have to get a new unit or find someone who can provide a replacment chip.

Hello dmzcompute;
Resetting NVRAM in 2500 resets only drum chip or both drum chip and toner chip? TNX

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (12/11/05 9:26 PM) + / -
As far as I know only the drum chip and it does not reset it, but changes the count being kept by the printer.

Re: HP 2500 by Roghani (12/12/05 12:58 AM) + / -
thanks dmzcompute;

but what do you mean "changes the count being kept by the printer"? doesn't it change the chip percent to 100% ? if doesn't change to 100%, what will be the number?

Re: HP 2500 by G.T. Kingsley (12/12/05 7:02 AM) + / -
In my experience, the 'reset' technique on the 2500 (but not the 2550, I understand) makes the machine go on printing from the cartridge or drum 'for ever', i.e. eventually you notice the printing is not good - one colour is missing (cartridge) or quality is poor (drum). You can check on the progress of the cartridges by taking them out and weighing them - about 475g is the weight when they are really empty. Resetting the machine gives you a lot more life from either component - HP are very 'conservative' about when they tell you the thing is finished.

The technique is, swith off; hold down the big green button on top, and switch on; continue holding down for 2 min.; release; after a further 2 min., press the red/orange button on top.

Incidentally, I got this originally from the very helpful people at www.refilltoner.com who sell toner to refill your cartridge at about half the price of a new one. And it works (in my experience).

Re: HP 2500 by Roghani (12/12/05 7:52 AM) + / -
G.T. Kingsley;

thanks, your comment was very helpful. but I think there is a typing mistake: needed time for holding the green button is at least 20 seconds (until Attention, Ready, and Go lights will each turn off).

Re: HP 2500 by G.T.KIngsley (12/12/05 8:17 AM) + / -
Not clear what you mean. I said hold it down for 2 min. - this is to be safe; I should think 20 sec is not enough, though I haven't tried such a short time.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (12/12/05 8:52 AM) + / -
Nothing to do with the chip on the consumable. The NVRAM reset resets the count the printer keeps in NVRAM. When you reset that counts goes down to 0 and starts over again. From what I understand the 2500 does not read the chip each time your power on or replace the consumbable. It only looks at it when the printer count reaches maximum and when you put in the new item it checks the chip to see if it is at 0.

I have a 2500 that refuses to allow the drum light to go out. I have tried the NVRAM resets 3 times including pressing the red button. We have replaced the drum, still the light is on. The unit prints fine. Any ideas?

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (12/16/05 2:16 PM) + / -
The light on solid only indicates that the drum is low and the printer will continue to print until the imaging unit fails. I would not worry about it. The only other issue is there is a e-reader which reads the chip on the drum unit. If that is defective or failing perhaps that is causing your issue. If it works do not worry about it. These printers are very hard to service.

Hi! I have a HP 2550L and tried to reset the printer Drum but it didnґt help. Should I change the chip on drum? If yes where can I buy the chip? How can I change the chip? Is it a kind of snapp in chip or I should use soldering iron?

The tuner was not reset eather when I Hold down the Green Button and turned it on for 20 seconds or more. I like to know how to change the Chip on Tuner.
Could you please help me with these problems?
Thanks // Kalle from Sweden

Re: HP 2500 by Stephen (12/18/05 9:38 AM) + / -
When the toner cartridge is empty replacing the chip won't make it be full again!

If you have a 2500 or 2550 that has failed maybe it's time to buy a 2600N, they are relatively cheap, and then you've got all new toner, and no drum to worry about. (not to mention a fresh years worth of warranty)

My unit has all three toner lights blinking at once.

I have replaced all the old toner with new HP toner replacments.

This started with the black one and onced replced the light went out.

Then blue and so on except the lights never went out.

Now all three red, blue, yellow blink and can'r use the printer.

Anyone with an idea? I also tried the reset procedure of holding the green button down 2 minutes this didn't help.

Re: HP 2500 by G.T.Kingsley (12/21/05 9:20 AM) + / -
Try resetting (see this group, my message dated 12.12.05).

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (12/21/05 10:01 AM) + / -
I have tried your suggested method twice and both times the printer ends up at a point with all lights flashing all at once then it tries to start and ends up with all three lights, red ,yellow and blue lights flashing all at the same time . I tried pushing red/orange reset and tried the suggested red and green at the same time .

Nothing has worked?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thank You

Re: HP 2500 by anton37 (12/22/05 7:51 AM) + / -
We have a Laserjet 2500 PCL 6 that is hanging up on every print. The paper loads fine and that page gets mostly printed but then jams up in the same place. I can open the back cover and the edge of the paper is just sticking out enough to pull it out. This is happening with every print. Any suggestions?

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (12/22/05 8:26 AM) +1 + / -
Perhaps your fuser is bad. Open the back like you want to do a face up print and see if the paper comes out. If it does, then the top exit assembly has something wrong. If it jams in the fuser, then the fuser is the most likely issue.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by anton37 (12/22/05 8:58 AM) + / -
Thanks for the reply. I tried with the back door open and it hang in the same place. Is there a sensor or anything that can be checked on the fuser or am I going to have to replaced the whole thing?

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (12/22/05 9:52 AM) + / -
Just remove the fuser and on the front of the fuser attempt to feed a sheet of paper and use the gears to turn the roller to see where it hangs up in the fuser. Perhaps there is an obstruction or maybe the gears are not turning right. Remove the fuser with the power off. If it goes thru smoothly, then perhaps you have another issue such as registration which is skewing the paper to one side before it even gets to the fuser. If that is the case you can remove the drum in front and remove the two screws which hold the registration assembly and remove it and see if there is an obstruction or something.

Re: HP 2500 by anton37 (12/22/05 11:48 AM) + / -
Ok, the fuser seems fine and the paper appears to be feeding straight and I cant see any obstructions. Actually when it hangs up the paper has already started out of the fuser just enough to where it should start to turn up against the back panel. I took the drum and fuser out and stuck a piece of paper into the printer from the back to see where the trailing edge was when the hang occurs. It looks to be that printing stops as soon as the trailing edge leaves the drum area, near a flat metal plate that sits under the drum.

I am going to try the registration assembly but not sure which it is. Is it plastic piece closest to the front of the printer with the snall metal roller in the middle or the metal strip behind it?

Thanks for the help!

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (12/22/05 1:53 PM) + / -
From memory it is below the drum and it does have a small metal roller and is held by one screw on each side. From what I rember it is a little tricky geting the right side off and then back on, but fiddling with it works.

Re: HP 2500 by anton37 (12/22/05 2:15 PM) + / -
I took it out and also the flat metal strip that sits beside it. I couldnt find anything that looked out of place. Dusted everything off and put it back together and the same thing. I took the drum out after the failed print and verified that the trailing edge of the paper is exactly at the edge between the "fuser" and the metal strip... repeated and its the same spot every time. There is a trigger that sticks up from the bottom in the same place but it seems to move freely.

Im giving up for today but Im going to try it again tomorrow.

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (12/22/05 2:28 PM) + / -
One thing to check is if the rollers at the top are turning when you do a print job. If not then you may have a gear train issue. The trigger is actually a sensor flag and that could be another issue. That flag is press down by the paper as it feeds. When that flag is pressed down it sends or is supposed to send a signal to the dc controller that paper has started to move. When paper clears the sensor the trigger pops back up and tells the dc controller that paper has cleared. All this has to happen is a specified time interval or the dc controller will think there is a jam and stop the printing process. With yours it could be the trigger or sensor associated with that trigger is not working so the printer does not know paper has started and when the time interval has passed the dc controller stops the printing cycle and by that time the paper has reached the fuser or it could be that sensor is being activated but the paper does not clean that sensor in the alloted time and again a shut down of the paper path. Wish i could be more help but your model printer is very hard to work on and we do very few of them since the cost to repair is usually more than a new printer. If you can not get it working my best suggestion is to replace it with the newer HP 2600N. You can get it for about 325.00 brand new and comes with a network card and paper tray. The other thing you may want to try is if you are feeding from a paper tray is to use the fold down manual tray and see if there is a difference.

Re: HP 2500 by anton37 (12/22/05 8:18 PM) + / -
Thanks dmzcompute. Im at home now but from your explanation it sounds like it is definiately a problem with the trigger as the upper rollers were working earlier.

I had figured that replacemet would be the best option since HP has already discontinued the 2500 and the boards don't speak very well of them. I appreciate your help and I'll post back if I stumble onto a solution while "improperly troubleshooting" with a screwdriver and hammer. :)

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (12/27/05 11:38 AM) + / -
Thanks for the tip about pressing "the red/orange button on top" after resetting, G.T.! I followed the directions for resetting posted elsewhere on this board and that did not solve the problem, but as soon as I pressed the cancel button on the control panel, all was well again.

My printer had said my black cartridge was out of toner, which I was sure was not the case. Worse than that, the carousel was stuck on cyan and wouldn't rotate, so I couldn't get the black cartridge out to put in a new one anyway. I called Hewlett Packard and they had nothing to offer but for me to send in the printer and get a refurbished one for $331, and I found no help on the hp website. This board is super; too bad hp service is not.

I'll be sure to check out www.refilltoner.com where you got this tip.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (12/27/05 3:13 PM) + / -
did you figure out the problem ? we have the same issue but only if tray 2 is full, if it only has 30 or 40 sheets in it the paper does not jam.
Thanks.

I have a HP 1500L on which I recently replaced the imaging drum. Upon completion, I was able to print approx. 100 pages without any problems. However, now the printer will not print at all, with all the lights flashing in sequence. I have unplugged the printer for a weekend, and, when I return and power it up, it makes a few clunking sounds and starts flashing the same lights. But it still won't print. Any suggestions???

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (12/30/05 12:05 AM) + / -
Remove the new imaging drum and turn on the printer and see if the noises are the same. Also when you put the imaging drum back in, exactly what lights are flashing?

Most of original Cyan cartridges in 2500/2550 leake after awhile. It continues up to end of cartridge life.
If these cartridges be charged the problem still will be existed.
Why this happens, how can be repaired and what should be done to prevent it?

I got it resetted on my HP 2550L. Tried 3 or 4 times without success but got it when I pressed the red button few times quickly after releasing the GO (big green) button, when all 3 lights are blinking simultaneously, and continuing to press few times after.

I keep getting problems when printing color images. I did everything correctly however, everytime I print color images, there are two white areas on the left side of the page. Could this be because of the drum?

HP 2500 color - won't print at all - DESPERATE by jloose (1/8/06 1:19 PM) + / -
The imaging drum light was on solid. I replaced the drum and now I'm stymied. First, all of the lights were on solid (didn't cycle) and it wouldn't print. So I turned off the printer, took out the drum and put it back in, turned on the printer. Now all the lights cycled but when they stopped the red attention light keeps flashing. The empty drum light is off. I'm just a school teacher, not a nerd, and I have work to do tonight!

Re: HP 2500 by pcrmike (1/9/06 7:49 PM) + / -
With all due respect, I do wish some of you guys would get real about this. There are certain things the manufacturers do to make you buy supplies. The more they try, the more we circumvent. Get a reputable remanufacturer to remanufacture the toners and drums properly at half the cost and do it! You guys are really cruising for problems when the unit actually fails and takes $500 bucks worth of other parts and supplies with it! These are not just to be toyed with. Now, if Moe has good reman supplies to offer for these, or reman your old ones, great. If not, I would be happy to refer you to someone in your part of the world or do it for you. I really think a number of you are going to do some real damage to your printer. I'm sorry Moe if this is over the top, but I would rather tell them the truth than see their stuff blow up. :-) PCRMike

Re: HP 2500 by Phoinix (1/19/06 6:49 AM) + / -
GREAT QUESTION, but I am not aware of being able to print in color by reducing the ink flow. The same goes for the imaging drum. You can print in black only, or in draft mode if you wish through changing your printing settings through Control Panel, Printers. I did the resetting procedure mentioned in this thread for the drum and that was months ago and it still prints just great.

Re: HP 2500 -> HP 2550 by Red! (1/25/06 11:00 AM) + / -
The HP2500 procedure didn't work for me on an HP 2550, but here's what did - based on the original procedure:

1) Turn power off.
2) Hold GO button and turn power on.
3) Wait until the GO, Ready and Attention LEDs go on; then the Attention and Ready LEDs go off, but the GO LED remains on
4) Release the GO buton.
5) All three LEDs start flashing for a few seconds and then the LEDs start cycling (as a normal init).
WHILE the LEDs cycle, press the Cancel button.

Voila... I tried pressing the Cancel button AFETR the LED cycling but that didn't work.

Thanks to both dmzcompute for his original procedure posting and klex for the Cancel button tip.

Indeed, now the question is, how do we also reset out non-empty toner cratriges...

Re: HP 2500 by Fred A. (1/25/06 3:18 PM) + / -
Not sure I understand that question.
If the cartridge is not empty it should work just fine.

Re: HP 2550 by Red! (1/25/06 3:25 PM) +1 + / -
What I mean is that the counter reports them empty, but it really isn't. (or is it for real this time?) I dunno yet, as I wasn't there when they changed the previous cartriges...

Re: HP 2500 by Fred A. (1/25/06 4:51 PM) + / -
I have only had success one time in resetting an ink cartridge and it was by accident.

At the time the printer (2500)showed I was low on Yellow and Cyan and then the drum took a dump on me. I replaced the Yellow since I had one on hand, and did the resetting procedure for the drum. When I was finised the drum was reset and the Cyan also worked. I don't print very much, but this reset was done almost 4 months ago and everything still prints just perfectly. Give it a shot dude.

Re: (HP2550n/L) by Red! (1/26/06 7:06 AM) + / -
Well, that's an interesting post... Personally I did the procedure 3 times: the first time I followed the inital procedure as is. The second time, I followed the procedure followed by a cancel press. The third time I pressed cancel when the lights were moving like a normal init...

Perhaps you just need to reinit the damn thing 3 times for a reset :P

Re: Re: HP 2500 by djw (edited 1/30/06 8:10 PM) + / -
I've just had a leaky cyan toner cartridge happen for a second time on my 2500n. The first time, it happened just at the end of the warranty period, and when I called HP they exchanged the cartridge and sent out a service tech to clean the printer.

This time when I called in (attempting to claim a new cyan cartridge under the lifetime cartridge warranty), the tech support person refused my claim, saying that it was probably a DC controller board fault on the printer.

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com is about a similar issue on the Color LaserJet 4600 - though that's a rather different type of printer ("in line" rather than "carousel"). It does feel like that sort of problem - overflowing the waste hopper in the cartridge (yes, my tray 1 was set on Any/Any).

There certainly is a problem with leaked cyan toner on the 2500 - I've seen several people refer to it - but I've never seen a definitive explanation of the problem.

The DC controller would seem the logical part to blame. A replacement item isn't cheap, and it's a complete pain in the wotsits to replace. Details are at http://www.laserquipt.com/support/idx/64/204/article/Error-59A0.html . I may have been happy to do that kind of major surgery if it guaranteed a fix, but I could easily be spending much of the cost of an equivalent new printer on a DC controller board and replacement cyan cartridge and still turn out to be no better off in the long run.

After two serious cyan toner leaks, the engine really is a mess, and is never likely to be completely clean without the sort of major dismantling that can only be done with a service manual, a lot of patience and some luck. The carousel design of the printer means that leaked toner gets absolutely everywhere, and the spill tray in mine is regularly doused with cyan with a smattering of yellow and magenta on top.

The service tech who cleaned the printer last time said he's no fan of the engine in the 2500 as it's too easy to wreck these printer when working on them.

Though I believe my formatter firmware is up to date (I don't think there's been any release beyond 20030108 03.005.0), my serial number has an H as the fourth character, so I've got a non-flashable formatter as well (see the laserquipt.com link).

I had a strange problem some months ago - which was possibly failing flash DIMM or formatter (HP support tried very hard to come up with an explanation, and couldn't) with 54.06.00 errors. If that's a failing formatter, the printer is certainly is a write-off, and I'm not sure how easy it would be to get a replacement flash DIMM.

I decided this was one problem too many for my 2500n. For its time it was a good machine, and it's done me proud for 31500 pages. HP normally stand by their printers pretty well, and they got me out of a mess the first time, but I think there's some kind of design flaw on my (fairly early) 2500n for which I can't see there being a fix forthcoming.

My new 3800dtn got here today - for about the same money as I paid for the 2500n when it was new (around 1100 pounds here in the UK). It's an infinitely better printer - much quieter in operation, faster especially in colour mode (it's an "in line" design - 21ppm in both mono and colour). It has three paper trays (a third tray is extremely useful to me), a duplexer, and a much better colour gamut (as a serious digital SLR user, I noticed this immediately, much as I don't regard a colour laser as a photo printer).

If the supplies manage their rated life, then the 3800dtn may well be cheaper to run, too - being an "in line", each cartridge has its own drum. Certainly, I think the 3800dtn is a neat piece of design, and I hope it works out as well in the long term as my 2500n did, until the series of problems in the last few months. Incidentally, I have an old LaserJet 6L that's still soldiering on.

If you're happy without a third tray, the 3800dn is quite keenly priced. Indeed, you may be happy with a 3000dn (no good for me - I need to be able to print 220gsm stock) or 3600dn (again no good for me - I need a real formatter, not a host based setup). I would recommend one of the duplexer models if you can stretch to it - you can't add a duplexer to a 3000/3600/3800 that wasn't built with one.

There's a full set of consumables included with a new printer, of course - a full set of HP consumables for a 2500 is around 275 pounds here in the UK. The 3800 series cartridges are all rated for 6000 pages - so that's more like 1.5 sets of 2500 cartridges except the black - around 400 pounds worth.

I'm probably going to put the 2500n on eBay. If nothing else, there's a usable JetDirect 615n which I'll reset and flash up to the latest firmware (not a cheap item), and the tray 2 is in good condition. There's a part used 230V fuser, drum (44% remaining having not been through any resetting tricks), black (52% remaining), magenta (87% remaining) and yellow (68% remaining). There's also the HP original 64MB DIMM together with a Crucial 128MB DIMM plugged in to the formatter. It prints cleanly as a black and white printer and for someone with low colour use, cleaning it up and fitting a new cyan cartridge will probably see them good for a year or more.

It could also possibly be used as a donor for rebuilding another broken 2500n, or for transplanting the DC controller and possibly the formatter from a broken 2500 series printer.

If anyone in the UK is interested either in parts or the whole printer, cartridges and all, email me (I hope this isn't against forum rules - if so, I apologise). It's in Bedfordshire. I didn't write this post to advertise the printer, but if someone is interested either in parts (there's a couple of Brits after various bits and pieces in this thread) or ideally the whole printer, it may do me a favour by getting rid of the printer to a good home and saving me the hassle and expense of eBay.

By the way - has anyone noticed the embedded web server bug on the 2500 with the pages printed on the magenta cartridge? The figure is way too high - it's more like all pages printed since the cartridge was installed, even if they were black and white. The figure on the supplies status page is correct.

I can't get the toner lights for the three colors to do anything other than flash. I installed a brand new imaging drum and brand new black cartridge. Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (2/7/06 3:40 PM) + / -
Probably one of the readers of this forum sold it. It was once suggested on the forum that since the printer is cheaper than a set of replacement cartridges, to use up the toner, sell it on eBay and buy a new printer. You absolutely can not run it without all the toner cartridges installed.

To DMZ Compute or anyone who can help me

I have a 2500L and during Xmas when I was printing, paper didnt go straight and it jammed. I opened the printer and I pulled the paper out. Then the lights started blinking, and it asked me to fix the problem with the toner cartridges. I ended up calling HP technical support, spent 39 bucks, he did the nvram reset, whatever, the printer recognized two of the four toners but the remaining two the lights blink and it wont print. HP tech told me to take it to a dealer who would put some kinda sticker and the toner will run. Toner's are more than 60% full.

Is there anyway I can fix the problem at home? If I take this printer to an authorized HP place, they will rip me off with 100 bucks to even touch the printer.

Any help would be appreciated. The printer has more than 60% ink in all cartridges and I'm so pissed at everything. Thanks for any help in advance
system for you 2

Re: HP 2500 by djw (2/15/06 1:58 PM) + / -
It could be that the e-label reader has failed or is dirty - that's the contacts that read the chips on the cartridges. If there's not a simple fix and you land up spending more than a few tens of dollars on parts or replacing cartridges that have been damaged, you're probably going to land up spending more than the printer is worth.

I'd be wary of spending US$100 just to get the printer looked at, that's probably more than it's worth.

As I said in my earlier reply, the tech who cleaned my printer said it's rather too easy to cause damage to the engine in these printers when working on them. As you have what you believe to be good cartridges, maybe you can find a printer on eBay with little or no toner, and then use your cartridges in it. Be aware that the 2550 series uses different cartridges to the 2500 series; you'll need a 2500 to use your cartridges.

You'd do yourself a huge favour if you found yourself something with a Tray 2, such as a 2500 or 2500n. If you find a 2500n or 2500tn that still has the JetDirect card, and you don't want it, you can put it on eBay as a separate item - JetDirect 615n cards always sell fairly well.

The other way round is to sell the part used cartridges on eBay; there may be someone that can put them to good use.

It's not worth spending much money on these old lowish end printers, especially considering the price of a new 2600n (which is host based and uses quite expensive supplies).

The sale of my 2500n, less the JetDirect 615n card that was bundled with the printer, is pending to GTKingsley - we've agreed a price and I'm waiting for him to contact me when he's back from holiday. The Tray 2 is potentially up for grabs as he already has one, but it's in the UK so I can't think it will help you. The JetDirect is almost certainly going on eBay.

Hi there
How can I get the elabel reader to work? Where exactly is it in inside the printer? If it has failed, then is that why ur suggesting a jetdirect card or another printer with no cartridges?

2600n after rebate is available in at least one store for $299(or around 325 lbs in ur currency). I can drive to the neighboring state of Delaware and not pay the 5 percent taxes on it too. Is that printer worth investing the money on?

I feel I might have damaged the elabel reader or at least done something to it when I pulled the sheet from inside when it was stuck. First I should ve been careful with the paper feed coz there was nothing wrong with the printer till then. Second when I pulled the sheet that was stuck I shouldve been gentle and I pulled it really hard.

Do you know about a konica minolta color laser printer 2400w thats selling for 250 bucks in some stores? If you do could you please let me know what u think about it compared to HP?
Thanks for all your help

Does anyone have any idea why this happens and if there is any cure.

Thanks,

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (2/23/06 4:39 AM) + / -
Sounds like a sensor issue where the printer thinks there is a jam and keeps starting the job over again. What happens if you do a 1 page document. Does the flashing light come on after it prints and you have to press the button? If that is the case I would remove the fuser and reinsert since maybe the exit flag is sticking. Just a thought.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (2/23/06 5:05 AM) + / -
I just tried with a 1-page print job. Same problem. The attention light blinks after printing. If I cancel, printer goes to Ready mode. If I press Go, it prints the page again.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Re: HP 2500 by tsellers (2/23/06 7:02 PM) + / -
After reading the posts, still unclear about a couple of points:

If you do the reset NVRAM procedure before the drum is at 0, does it show up on the status screen as a new page count and 100%?

Is the NVRAM reset procedure the same thing that is being advertised as the "secret reset code" being sold on eBay for $1.99?

Regards, Tom

PS: I did read the odd post recommending the Samsung CLP series. Note it is an interesting alternative with 1200 DPI and duplexing, but in our experience the text quality leaves a lot to be desired and it also has the dreaded kill chip. If you get the CLP-510 you have few options for refill, unlike the 2500 series of HP.

Re: HP 2500 by Helo (3/3/06 8:54 PM) + / -
NOTE: The drum light on the 2500 must be flashing (ie - completely out, not in warning status - what was driving me nuts was I was trying to reset a drum that was only in warning status and it wouldn't work)

To perform a NVRAM init (this is verified on a 2500)
1 Turn the printer off.
(drum light may be off at this point and you are good to go, otherwise proceed to step 7)
7 Hit the red STOP button once and drum light then goes out. You are good to go.

I can't seem to find the service manual for the HP Color LaserJet 2550L in the reference section.

What might I be doing wrong?

Cheers, Antony.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (3/8/06 11:15 AM) + / -
Thanks for that Helo. I have the 2500L so hopefully it will work on that machine as well. The software reports there is 44% left in the drum so guess I'll have to wait to try it.

As I'm in Canada just talking to Precision toner about getting some refill supplies. Interesting he said they use the Chemical Toner for the 2500L series as they found the generic toner clogged the machines over time. The Chemical Toner apparently costs more, but at around $35.00 CAD that still appears to be good, especially if you are already in Canada anyway. They don't officially sell refill kits for this model so you have to know how to do it competently yourself, but apparently you can purchase the correct Chemical Toner if you are so inclined.

Curiously he also said you could get by without replacing the chip on the cartridge, that you just wouldn't know when you were running out. I get the impression they may not have the reset chips available, I have to call them back on that. However I thought I read that on the 2500L you simply cannot print unless you replace the chip, I can't seem to find the relevant post on that again, I was trying to find that before I called them back.

Thanks again for the comments!

I know this is old but I figgured I would add to the 2550 People.

The technique that worked for me is as follows:

Power on with GO button held down.
The three lights above the go button will light
As you continue to hold the go button they will unlight one by one till only the button above the go light is lit.
Continue to hold the go button, this is about 45 seconds in to the process now.
The lights will then light again one by one till all three are lit.
Continue to hold go button. You are about 1 min into process now.
Hold go buttong untill all three lower lights flash quickly togeather. Hold go button untill all lights stop flashing.

The machine is now ready to go. No need to hit cancel. After the lights stop flashing and go dark releasing the go button switches the printer into the "ready" state.

This does not reset the cartriges though. Fixes the damn drum problem though :)

I bought a drum cartridge (i think is black),
It did not work
Do I need to buy 4 color of toners again, Black, yellow, magenta and cyan?
Please, help, its dirving me crazy

Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (3/16/06 6:02 PM) + / -
Since it actually costs more to buy the toners and drum than to buy a brand new working 2550 that includes them along with a warranty, one wonders what the motivation is to buy an "empty" printer. How were you expecting it to print without any toner in it?

I have a clj 2500 that just quit working after 2 good years. The cartridges have been changed when they were flashing that they needed to be replaced. After the third (magenta)catridge was replaced, it has not powered up at all,I have checked all the obvious reasons, cord, wall outlet, switch with no luck, any suggestions?

Re: HP 2500 by slstacy (3/21/06 2:22 PM) + / -
We resolved our issue and the printer works beautifully now. We were able to determine that the cartridge teeth were out of allignment by one tooth, and were able to gently move it forward one tooth so that the cartridges would make contact with the paper.

HP 2550L Imaging Drum dead by Marcus Pfeiffer (3/28/06 1:57 PM) + / -
I've read every (highly repetative) post above ad-nausium and am surprised that not one single person has their facts straight on the HP2550L Imaging Drum life issue.

When the Imaging Drum is used, an eLabel Chip mounted on the drum counts rotations. The best case life-expectancy of the Imaging Drum is a single black and white print job of 20,000 pages where the drum needs only to rotate once per page and only once to initialise the job.

Factors which reduce the life of the Imaging Drum to the theoretical MINIMUM of 5000 pages are;

Every printout is colour, therefore the drum has to rotate 4 times for each page.

Every printout is one page, therefore the drum needs to rotate for an initialization cycle before every page.

Every printout is done after the printer has gone to sleep, therefore the printer does a self-test awakening for no apparent reason and uses up an additional rotation.

You could, theoretically, print a single colour dot on 5000 pages, use up virtually, no toner and run out of life on your Imaging Drum.

This "Time Bomb" that HP has programmed into the firmware of the cartridge is a real sore spot with me. They hold you hostage with a perfectly functional printer. I would call it an unethical business practice.

In any case, when the eLabel Chip says it's time to die, there's absolutely nothing you can do about it except replace the eLabel Chip for $25 CDN or the Imaging Drum for ten times that.

You just have to know where to get the chip.

I'll post pictures and details tomorrow.

HP 2500 problems by daishi.jam (3/30/06 9:37 AM) + / -
Our school was donated a hp 2500 CP and I am currently trying to set it up. It works decent in BW so far, but I am having some major problems printing in color. It appears to put too much ink on the paper. In all the dark areas, there is a multitude of dots and darks places in dark color areas. In addition, I am having problems with the IP. I have not found a reset button or option in the jet direct manual or in the printer manual. As for what is above about resetting it, I do not have some of the buttons that where mentioned (there is not a button that says, "Go" on this one.)
Any help would be appreciated.

BUT the toners hold less & not easily reman'd by Anonymous (3/31/06 8:59 AM) + / -
Hello Moe!

Sikna says,

The new CLJ 2600 might be as cheap ($300) initially as the 2550L, but its black toner is rated at 2.5K (vs 5K for the 2550)and color toners only are rated at 2K pgs. No high-capacity (4K)color toners are available as they are for the 2550.

An offsetting factor in favor of the 2600 is the 8 ppm speed and since each toner has its own drum, no separate costly drum cartridge to replace as in the 2550.

However, the new 2600 toner carts are difficult or impossible to remanufacture due to plastic welds replacing the usual screws holding some the cartridge parts together.

This was the deciding issue for me, since the 2550 carts and drum are easy to remanufacture and third-party toners, chips and drums are high-quality and readily available.

I have often used fuser films for other machines in fuser repairs. The films are often the same size and can be cut down in length if needed. I have not looked at the fuser yet but it may be possible to use another machine film in this one.

I just got a 2550L here:

Last week I could have bought a 2600N for $249 at OfficeMax. Then I could have sent them one of my many broken HP printers and gotten an $80 rebate. I've got a $20 coupon for OfficeMax and get 2% back on my Amex card. This brings the total cost to $144. Why worry about refilling when you can just toss the printer out after 2K copies or sell it to some fool on eBay.

HP2550L eLabel Chip replacement by Anonymous (3/31/06 10:08 PM) + / -
I guess there's no way to add photos to the posts here, so I uploaded them to my webspace...

Have a look at the replacement eLabel Chip and location on the imaging drum...

http://www.lantex.ca/tech/chip.jpg
http://www.lantex.ca/tech/chip_location.jpg

The eLabel Chip is simply stuck on to the Imaging Drum with 2-sided tape. One needs only to pry it off and stick the replacement on. There are no electrical contacts on the drum. Once the printer cover is closed, the chip makes contact with the printer.

The chip incorporates a Motorola 12F683 8-pin eprom as a counter. If you have the appropriate technology, you could clear the counter because the chip features a POR (Power On Reset) command.

Otherwise, do what I did and go the lazy route... $25(CDN) to your favourite HP parts supplier.

I installed 2 new cartriges on my 2550L and my printer cartridge lights came on for these two colors. My printer would no longer print.

I followed the instructions to clear the NVRAM as mentioned in previous postings. I had two lights that kept flashing. The first try, one light went out. The second try, the second went out, but I still could not print.

So I removed the driver from my computer, then rebooted, and reinstalled the driver. It worked.

I have a hp color laserjet 2500tn that does not print anything on the half left of the page. I replaced all toner cartridges and the imaging drum but the printer still has the same problem. The printer makes loud grinding noise when it prints. There seems to be uneven gaps between the imaging drum to the toner carousel, in which the left gap is wider than the right gap. Please help if you have seen this problem before and know how to fix it. Thanks.

Has anyone gotten the NVRAM reset to work on a 2500n?

I get the 3 lights turning off sequentially, it cycles through ALL the lights once, then all lights remain on until you push a button. Either orange/green button results in drum light back to flashing.

Help please! Thanks!

Great thread,
Quick question, have any of you seem major fluctuation reductions on pages remaining when you print the supplies page. This is a brand new machine and the 4000 estimated on the black and yellow catridge went from 4000 to 1970 to 2300. on the black it started at 5000. Your smaert chip info is appreciated and it took forever to get to a tech as they said my NEW machine was out of warrenty. HP has a real customer issue.

Any advice welcomed.
I need to change the toner for one of the colors.
The red toner light is blinking and the Triangle alert is blinking. I can't get the red cartidge to rotate around to change. I've pressed every button even several at the same time.

I can't even print the toner status report. Nothing prints and the laser does not cycle when turned on.

I've unplugged the printer, waited 2 minutes plugged it back in then attemted to get the printer to cycle so I can rotate the toner to replace. Nothing.

Any insights on what to do? I got to print ASAP!
Thanks in advance for any trouble shooting wisdom.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (4/20/06 12:06 PM) + / -
All toners are based on 5% coverage. Perhaps HP has a method of determining each job or keeps an average used and if you print a lot of pages of lets say photos where the coverage is about 90% it makes an adjustment and then if you go back to standard printing of lets say 5% coverage is then adjusts remaining pages upward based on the new coverage. Something like my car which tells me my MPG, but of course it changes depending on city or highway and that of course changes how many miles I have left on gas in the tank.

Re: HP 2500 by Jetstorm (5/29/06 9:12 AM) + / -
Hi, guys. I know that the printers 1500, 1500l, 2500, and (possibly) 2500l are similar, which means that what works on one will most likely work on the other. I have 1500L and the resetting technique worked for me, for which a lot of applause to whoever posted it. HOWEVER! Before I even got to this forum, I had the same problem of "empty drum" light blinking, and couldn't print a single page. But my magenta cartridge was changed not so far ago. When I took the cartridges out, I noticed that ALL of them had the same chips on them (black, color, and drum). I thought - what's the difference? and switched the chips on the magenta cartridge and the drum, thinking that the new chip would allow drum to continue, and I didn't need the magenta cartridge then (I didn't know I needed all of them to function). BUT. The result was unexpected. When I turned the printer on, it did its routine check and told me that I have non-HP cartridges in use and then shut up, and let me print all I want. That's what I've been doing for the half a year since then with those same cartridges. Try it - you'll like it. And now to my question.

My 1500L won't print anything longer than 2 pages. The 1st page is always fine, yet the 2nd page is printed starting about 1/3 from the top and the print is hardly visible. After the 2nd page is printed, the attention light comes on, and printer stops printing (found the same problem here in the forum with the similar model 2500, yet the problem here hasn't been resolved). If I pull out the paper from the tray and insert it again, the printer starts from the 1st page, and on the 2nd page it again gives me the same problem (print 1/3 from the top, hardly visible), and it goes on forever. When I press the stop button, the job is cancelled.
If I set it only 1 page to print, the page is printed, and the attention light starts blinking too. Again - if I pull out the paper from the tray and insert it back, that page is printed again.

I've downloaded the latest driver and update from the hp website, and they don't resolve the problem.

If anybody had the same problem - I'm looking forward to view the resolution.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (5/29/06 10:24 PM) + / -
Jetstorm;
Probably paper size defined in printer driver is not matched with paper size you insert to printer. Check it!

Re: Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (5/30/06 9:03 AM) + / -
Maybe, I'll check it. Even though it's unlikely, since the paper feeds ok. Any idea what to do with the crappy print quality on the 2nd page? 'Cause I don't think it has anything to do with the toner or the drum, since if I print by 1 page, I can go on and on. But as soon as I make it print 2 or more pages, that's where the trouble begins. Also, once in a while it'll print the way it's supposed to - only from Acrobat Reader and not all the time either. What other problems can there be?

Re: HP 2500 by Jetstorm (5/30/06 6:02 PM) + / -
A few questions to the smart ones:
How can I check if my fuser is still good?
Does it function at yes/no rate (either functions or not) or the comparable rate (better/worse)?
WTF is the fuser and what's it look like?

Re: Re: Re: Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (5/30/06 6:35 PM) + / -
I really do not have an answer for you since we no longer work on these and did not like them when we did. I would check the control of the pickup roller on the right side. It almost sounds like the mech to stop the roller after each page is not working right so the roller keeps on turning rather then stopping after each page. Watch the paper as it is fed into the printer. There should be a pause between the first and second sheet as toner is put down on the drum with 4 revolutions of the carousel. If you do not have that pause it is the clutch/selenoid on the right side which controls the pickup roller which is bad.

HP 2550 Factory Reset by acam (5/31/06 6:45 AM) + / -
Will the following process listed previously in this thread reset the printer to factory defaults. I had to move one from one location to another and did not reset the IP address. Now the printer is in a new default gateway without a PC to run it. We are strictly thin client.

7 Press the Stop/Cancel button 3 or 4 times. The NVRAM-init process runs until the printer is in the Ready state.

Re: HP 2500 by technophobic (5/31/06 1:20 PM) + / -
This had no effect on the drum but set the toner to 'unknown' or whatever, when you check on the 'supplies status page' by pressing the green and the red button at the same time it tells you what it thinks is going on. We shall see what we shall see as I keep printing.

The manual mentions all sorts of page numbers but none make any sense when you look at real world usage.

I wish the morons with 2550 printers would read the flaming thread and register the fact that this 'fix' does NOT work with their printer.

I am keeping my 2100 for everyday printing and will only use the 2500 when I REALLY DO NEED A BIT OF COLOUR, sorry I shouted but why do we need to print all that stuff in anything other than monochrome? If you need stationery then get it printed on the cheap! Saves a lot of money and paper as well as a few decibels because this machine is NOISY!!!

HP 2550

I've refilled C,M,Y and Black cartridges, i've replaced all the chips on colour cartriges, but accidentally I've replaced black catrige chip with drum chip:) Black cartridge led was blinking, after that I've replaced it with the right chip for black colour, but the black cartridge led is still blinking, I,ve tried to switch printer off and on but it didn't help.

Could it be something wrong couse i made that mistake or what?
What should i do to make it work?

Re: HP 2500 by dmzcompute (edited 7/1/06 8:05 AM) + / -
Try the NVRAM procedure described above in the 8th post from the top and see if that helps. The other thing you could try first is to remove the black toner cartridge and turn the power off. Now turn the power back on with the black still out of the printer. When it asks for the black toner, load it in and see if it recognizes it.

Suggestions for Replacement by drjane (7/13/06 11:30 AM) + / -
I have to replace my 2500L. I planned to get the 2600n after reading reviews, it's cheap enough and has no imaging drum to replace (I believe) but when I looked at the toner cost (I learned the hard way with the 2500l) found that the cartridges cost about the same as the 2500, but for half the output.

The cost of replacing the 2500 toner was a real shock. Does anyone have any suggestions for a better choice color laser?
Speed doesn't matter nearly as much as print quality and overall cost of printer + toners.

(My first post - hope I am posting in the right place - apologies if I am not.)

Thanks.

Re: HP 2500 by anonymous (7/14/06 5:26 AM) + / -
There are 2 new HP's on the market, the 2605 and the 1600. Both use the same cartridge as the 2600n. The reason for the cost of the cartridges is that they each have their own drum. So the paper does a single pass for each print instead of a pass for each color, which drastically improves the print speed. You will find with HP your cost per page will still be cheaper than with the other manufacturers. The 1600 lists for $299 US! The 2605 $499.

Toner lights come on after printing a few pages by Jon at WAC (7/20/06 7:00 PM) + / -
Our HP Color Laserjet 2550N has worked fine for a year or two. Lately, however, when printing more than ten or twenty pages, it acts up: it starts outputting blank pages.

So I power it off (the computer has finished spooling to the printer, and the red button doesn't cancel, so not much else I can do.)

When I turn it back on (after waiting a couple of minutes), all or some of the toner lights come on (after the initial "dance of the lights"). There is plenty of toner in all of the cartridges.

So I power cycle again. A different set of toner lights come on.

If I leave the power off for 30 minutes or so, all is well when I power it on again.

So, apparently a problem when the printer gets overheated. It's used in an office, at 70-75 degrees, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Any suggestions?

WinXP + HP 2550L. I had to print about 350 pages at a time. Well, after 175 pages, my counter for black cartridge was over. Have already sent the job to the printer, but it wouldn't print. I power off the printer, then power on, without canceling the job from Windows. The diagnostic page shows 100% for black toner and starts printing. After another 50 pages, stops again, same "threshold reached. Replace cartridge". Repeat the procedure, but doesn't work anymore. Open the cover, extract the black cartridge, just flip the chip in position (sorry for my poor english, might be not accurate), i.e. change pin position, reinsert cartridge; carousel rotates, says no black cartridge installed; ok, change chip in normal position, when I close the cover press Go button, and "It" starts printing again. After 30-40 pages, stops again. Well, I printed all 350 pages, after I had changed a few times the chip "back and forth". Now, after I have shutdown the printer and the computer, this solution doesn't work anymore. But I suppose the firmware and the drivers are not perfect and "bypass" solutions still exist. I put the retired C/M/Y toners and a retired drum back in my 2500, leaving only the working black toner. Now that the drum light and all 3 color toner lights are blinking(i.e. no-go). Then, I performed the steps 1 through 7 (7th step was necessary for me) suggested by Helo, and WALAH! All warning lights are off, and it's printing like a charm! Kudos to those contributed in this thread!

I do have a small finding though: After resetting the NVRAM, the printer will lose the ability to monitor the slot that had the empty supply. In my case, I can no longer monitor the useage of the drum and C/M/Y toners, even if I put a new HP cyan toner back in place, it still shows as non-HP supply.

When I did the reset, the black toner wasn't finished, so the HP utility software shows only the usage percentage of the black toner. Everything else reads "non-HP toner/drum". I guess this is the only trade-off for doing a NVRAM reset. It's ok for me, cuz I just cut my printing cost by half!

Aloha,

Suddenly, my hp 2500 prints with smears on the right side of the page. These smears seem to be more pronounced at the top of the page, especially with the red ink.

I replaced the red cartridge and same problem. I changed the print color to black and it still smears at the top right of the page, but not as much as the red.

Any ideas?

Mahalo for your help.

There is a HP Laserjet 2500n printer at my workplace. After I replaced the imaging drum, the orange light indicating that the drum is low was still on. I tried the NVRAM resetting but the lights did not turn off as described. Also, the button to toggle the carousel does not work. Can anyone give me any information on how to fix this?

File folder label jam: HP 2550n by MikeyB (7/27/06 9:15 PM) + / -
I print file folder labels a couple times per week (Avery 5215) using the top tray feeder. For about six months this worked with 100% success, then I started getting the occasional jam that could be cleared either from the back or by lifting out the imaging drum and pulling from the front.
Lately I get jams about 75% of the time- didn't see anything useful in the manual on this. Any tips for refurbishing the rollers or other approaches to avoid this jam?

Thanks!

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Paul M (8/1/06 10:22 AM) + / -
I had a similar problem and just followed the cleaning instructions in the hp toolbox section (under trouble shooting)

The only thing is on the second pass it does take a few minutes for the paper to emerge and it makes worrying "clicking" sounds in the process.

It seems this is normal though :-0

My 2550L won't pick up the paper anymore. It goes through the cycle as if it is going to print, but the paper pickup tray doesn't raise up. The printer then shuts down with the alert light and the two green lights on. Any ideas on this? I sometimes get a "printer is out of paper" notice. Thanks in advance.

I have an HP 2550 that is making a grinding noise just as it powers down after it finishes a print job. I tried puting in another drum and the problem did not go away. I also tried resItting all of the cartridges and NO LUCK. It still prints fine, but the noise is getting unbearable. It seems to be coming from the front or mid of the printer. Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be! thanks!

Re: HP 2500 by tonyuk (8/9/06 7:30 AM) + / -
thats good guys but what about the waste toner hopper what happens when that gets full, it is cotained in the drum unit.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by moe (8/9/06 9:47 AM) + / -
You remove one of the end caps, it's just held on by a bunch of screws. You also have to remove the screw from the drum shutter and take that off as well. Then you pull off the white bushings making sure you keep track of which ones goes where. Take it outside and dump all the waste toner in the trash can. Don't do it in direct sunlight or you'll burn the drum. Alternative method if the wife isn't around is to dump it in the toilet (very messy). Make sure you clean it all up afterward or they get kind of mean. There's usually quite a bit so it takes about 5 minutes of banging and shaking to get it all out.

Re: HP 2500 by PROTRUCK (8/19/06 8:12 AM) + / -
I am making a color catalog printing on both sides using a HP2500
using lots of color. Have all new cartridges and new drum. The first side prints nice. On printing the second side having problems with smearing. The location of smearing is at center of the top of paper & comes down about 3/4 to 1". It is in the same location where the roller picks up the paper out of the tray & is a littel wider than the roller. From the color of the smear it looks like it might be picking up the color from the opposite side. It does this about 70% of the time. I have also tried delaying printing the second side to make sure ink was dry & it still smears. Help. THANKS

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (8/26/06 10:48 PM) + / -
None of the carousel printers will work without a full cartridge loadout. LJ 3000 and higher you can kick them into 'Disable Cartridge Check', which is found in the diagnostic menu. Then you can run those without a full load. But no promises as to how well the printer will work.

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (8/26/06 10:52 PM) + / -
You are probably looking at a bad low voltage power supply. As long as you are getting no lights at all from the printer. The fix will not be cheap. Use it for a discount on another HP printer or go to www.hp.tradeups.com and HP will buy the thing off of you for a few bucks

Re: Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (8/26/06 11:00 PM) + / -
Okay, your wish is granted. I do work for HP on the 2550. Cartridge life is based on a 5% coverage of the page on average. 2550 carts are rated for 4k pages for color and 5k for black. More coverage and you burn through toner faster. Less coverage and your toner level is fine but you have to worry about the OPC burning out and HP won't cover it after 4k pages.

and FYI, refilling violates the warranty, like you didn't know that already

HP 2500C+ I replaced the c + m cartridge and yet the readout window keeps telling me that the cartridge is empty. I have noticed by taking the cartidges out the little white plungers are bottomed out on the c + m but not on the black & yellow. So I don't think the two middle ones are pumping. Any suggestions? Can I even disable the color and print in just black & white? At lest I would be able to get some use out of the printer.
Thanks

Re: HP 2500 by theprinterman (9/11/06 8:59 AM) + / -
What warranty exactly is voided by refilling carts? The cartridge warranty? Or the machine warranty?
Just curious.

Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (9/17/06 3:04 PM) + / -
Btw, the LJ 2600 will also work with some dead cartridges if you select "Override Out" from the service menu. FYI about the warranty. The warranty on both carts and printer is voided if you use refills or 3rd party cartridges.

HP 2605dn :: only prints full yellow page or blank by Isabelle (9/20/06 8:41 PM) + / -
Hello,

I just bought a brand spankin' new 2605dn, and when I plugged it in it printed a 'test page', but it only came out as a totally yellow page. If I try to print anything color it does the same thing, and if I set it to 'black and white' then the page comes out totally blank.

Has anyone heard of this? HP is impossible to get ahold of. Their website says their tech support is 24/7, but when you call they are only open 8-5 EASTERN. There is no way I can call during those hours! So if anyone has any bright ideas, I would really appreciate it:) Thanks so much! -Isabelle

Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (9/22/06 9:58 AM) + / -
LOL, the 2605 group is across the hall from me. I know for dead certain they are in from 5am to 5pm pacific time M-F. I watch them walk in every morning. Just like the rest of phone support. The 24/7 bit is including chat support. No comments on that.

Sounds like you have a HVPS problem or the contacts. More likely the contacts. We often do a tape test on a cartridge to trigger just such an effect.

I know its hard to get through right now. Its been crazy busy at the tech center with the run up to Xmas on us early.

Agarwal,

There is no setting to disable chip detection. The best you can do is to activate the 'override out' setting in the service menu. You could try an NVRam reset with the cartridges in but there are no guarantees on that.

Also all of you can try this link for a lot of how-to's on printer workings. HP will likely shut it down sometime but for now its working.

Hey, great advice on the posts. Thanks. We have a 2550 with a stuck carousel. Whatever we do it
gives us a flashing led for the yellow cartridge. We took off the cover and found the really obscure brake lever and so were able to manually rotate the carousel and R&R the cartridges. Everything seats fine, still have the same problem,.Although we can get the carousel to do some rotation, it just freezes up with blinking led for yellow cart. The yellow cart was just replaced. Person who did the replacing is not around to question. Does not seem like a reset problem.
Do they gum up from toner dust? Thanks in advance for any help. Andre

Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (10/1/06 10:20 AM) + / -
How large is the job once it is spooled? A 40mb file could be spun up to as large as 300mb. Seeing as the printer only has 64mb built in you can see the problem. You only have a few real options.

1) Set the Raster Compression to Maximum. This is in the Printing Preferences of the PCL driver under the Advanced tab. In the PS driver there is instead an option to "Optimize for Speed" in the same area of the driver.

2) Add more ram to the printer.

3) Recognize that the printer is a light duty printer and get a printer capable of handling jobs of that size with dispatch

Re: HP 2550N Imaging Drum dead by funkmasterta888 (edited 1/13/07 9:34 PM) + / -
***THIS PROCEDURE WORKS FOR SURE ON THE 2550N***

It is a combination of all previous attempts for the 2500, 2550, 2550L:

0. Unplug ethernet cable, not sure if this is important but it's what I did.
1. Hold down the GO button.
2. Turn on the printer while holding down the GO button.
3. Have patience. The 3 main leds will do a song & dance and then ALL SHUT OFF, whatever, it's not important. What is important is to look for this sequence.

ATTENTION LED: on
STATUS LED: on
GO LED: on

Then, look for this sequence.

ATTENTION LED: off
STATUS LED: off
GO LED: on

At this point, you are ~1min into the procedure.

4. Now, continue to hold the GO button down for 1 more minute.
5. I can't remember what I did at this point because I had been trying different things for the past hour. But, try either:

-Press the RED button and let go. Press it a few more times when the LED's cycle. <--this method worked for me 2 more times, first do this, then do the step below and the individually colored cartridge LEDs should each light up.

-or, Press the RED button and hold it down. When the 3 LED's blink really fast, press the RED button a few times.

I wished I would've videotaped myself while experimenting, then these instructions could be more accurate.

The great part about this procedure is that my Yellow cart was shown at 4% and now it has been RESET to show that:

"ATTENTION: A non Hewlett-Packard supply has been installed..."

So, it reset the cartridge counter on the Yellow as well as resetting the page count on the printer itself. However, it did not reset the counter on the Red cart.

My guess is that the timing of when you press the RED button corresponds to resetting the whichever LED is lit. <--this assumption turned out to be correct. Press the RED button at the same time the LED on the cartridge you want to reset is lit.

I hope this helps. BTW, thanks for this board, it f-ing ROCKS!!!

Saved me from buying a new imaging drum and being able to use my Yellow cart until it truly is depleted.

HP 2500 NVRAM resets and cartridge supplier by occidental tourist (10/14/06 7:12 AM) + / -
Great thread and its still going.

I have a 2500L that ran for maybe 2 cartons (10,000 sheets) on the original manufacturer's consumables before asking for a black cartridge. Although it wasn't displaying any poor print quality,it had been maybe a year since I put it in service. Most of my printing is black typed pages although I have made some homemade fullcolor map books. I figured that was more than the estimated life so at that time I didn't try to figure out how to trick the printer to eek some more pages out.

This was probably a mistake. I should have weighed the cartridge. That is my future course of action. I noticed that an earlier post said 475gms is empty weight. What is full weight? This might be a gauge of whether refills or generic cartridges have the same service potential, i.e. are filled with the same amount of toner.

I suppose particle size and other quality aspects could also affect yield and performance in generics vs. name brand.

Eventually it also asked for the color cartridges at varying intervals (locked out from printing and the light for a cartridge was on steady). I don't know if it tracks calls to that color or how it guages use of the individual toners, because if it is only counting B&W vs. color I would think that it would ask for all the color cartridges at once, but it did not.

Insofar as this goes, does anyone have a recommendation for replacement cartridges. I bought a set on e-bay for about $189 for the 2500. The manufacturer is "MIP" "remanufactured in PRC".

They worked fine, don't leak, clean printing, but the black cartridge replacement light came on after maybe a quarter of the life I experienced with the original HP cartridge. Didn't weigh the cartridge new and have to borrow a scale to get accurate weight on it now, but I have reset the NVRAM and this turned off the cartridge light and allows me to print.

Knowing now how to make sure I use all the toner in these cartridges, if using brand new HP cartridges is really a better idea I'm willing to consider it even though they are considerably more expensive than remans. The performance of the first set was ample and they might even have had more life if I knew about the reset.

That said, any recommendations on where to buy new or reman brand name or generic cartriges? How nuts is the self refilling option?

One poster several months ago suggested that all this resetting could harm the printer. I understand if the drum indicates replacement needed, this may be just a page counter, but if you constanatly reset and don't empty the excess toner collected then this can create problems.

Are there downsides to printing with low toner that could harm the machine? Ditto for the drum. If you empty the excess toner, should you be aware of other age/mileage related problems with the drum that could harm that are likely to harm the chasis in some way.

Thanks,

Brian

Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (10/15/06 11:25 AM) + / -
Don't use weight as a measure of laser cartridge life. Laser cartridges have a waste bin INSIDE them and thus at any given time will have both usable and unusable toner inside of it. Also, the toner cartridge light is supposed to flash when the cartridge is out. A steady light is only supposed to be a low indicator.

What affects cartridge life is page count and coverage. Also, unless you tell the printer otherwise it will use all 4 colors on every print. If most of your printing is B&W I highly suggest you do the following in your windows print driver. If you are not using windows 2K or higher ignore this...

1) Go into your Printers section of your computer. (On your Start Menu or in your Control Panel)

2) Right-Click on the driver icon and choose Printing Preferences.

3) Go to the Color tab and put a dot in Print in Grayscale. This selects monochrome printing.

4) Go to the Advanced tab and find a line that says "Print All Text as Black". By default this option is DISABLED, click on the DISABLED and switch it to ENABLED. This makes sure that in the future text printing uses only the Black cartridge.

Combined these settings ensure that the black cartridge is the only one used. It also makes the image drum have only one rotation per page instead of the usual four (one for each color plane). When you do need to go back to color printing briefly just go back to the color tab in the driver and remove the dot from Print in Grayscale. Some people also will have two seperate driver installations. One with the monochrome printing settings and the other with the color settings.

BTW brand new, full duty HP cartridges are supposed to go 4K pages for color and 5K for the black. This is at a 5% average coverage level. Hope this helps.

Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (10/15/06 1:08 PM) + / -
Took me 3 or 4 trys with my 2550L on one imagimg drum it worked, on the other no way. I do believe the one that would not reset was a genuine Hewlett Packard "REPLACEMENT" drum. Thank You Thank You Thank You Thank You. These imaging drums in Canada are $258.00 plus tax. Ends up around $300.00 total. I would not have a problem paying this IF the images the printer put out BEFORE it decided the imaging drum needed replaced were not PERFECT.

On another note. My original toners lasted 18 months. I put new toners in June 17. It is now October 1st and the yellow and blue are showing low. This process did not work to reset my toners.

Any further advice would be helpful.

Re: HP 2500 by Stephen (10/15/06 3:24 PM) + / -
The drum has a waste compartment, eventually it will fill, and the image quality will quickly go from good to really bad.

Note that in printers where the drum is separate from the toner cartridges the cartridges do not have waste bins, only the drum does. (Color LaserJet 2500/2550/4500/4550, et al)

No electrical reset will magically make there be more toner in the cartridges.

Re: HP 2500 by Anonymous (10/17/06 10:41 PM) + / -
If its JUST the attention light flashing and no other lights are on at all this usually comes on for one of three reasons.

1) There is a paper jam.
2) The top cover is ajar.
3) The fuser has become misaligned.

HP document c00159488 gives a full description of all control panel light situations. Also you might be able to bring up a simulator in via your driver installation. Check under the Services tab in Printing Preferences. It may be accessible thru there.

For all the lights staying on try cold resetting the printer first. If that fails, pull out all carts and the image drum then power cycle the printer. Input the supplies one at a time. It may not fix things but its a starting point.

Re: HP 2500 by occidental tourist (10/20/06 3:41 AM) + / -
I did the NVRAM reset and lights are out, but I (concidentally?) now have the leaking toner problem - it might be cyan or black -- that I have never seen in the three years I owned the printer.

I just weighed the original HP cyan cartridge that I removed 6 months ago when the cyan light was flashing and it weighs 552 grams. The old magenta weighs 561 grams. I might have thrown away my old black and yellow cartridges, I'm still looking. I have the replaceable drum so I don't believe these cartridges are carrying any waste. Any idea what these are supposed to weigh full?

Ironically, the renewed cartridges that have had maybe 25% of the cycles that those originals saw, if that, all weigh less. (Blk 510, yel 535 mag 535 cyan 533)/

I bought these on ebay for $189 from "runyo internal trading" that lists website: http://www.h4inkjets.com
and e-mail of: rhzhang404@yahoo.com

That leaves me, wondering if anyone can recommend reliable supplier for replacement toner cartridges?

and, is there a diagram out here in cyber space regarding disassembling the drum to empty waster toner?

I took a quick look and it looks like you could pull either end. Is one easier than the other. Read the note about keeping track of the white bushings. Anything other hints?

Is there any way by looking at the ink cartridges that I can see which one is "leaking". I am getting scattered dark blotches of maybe one or two mm size all of a sudden but I don't see a lot of excess toner or obvious evidence that it is falling out of either the black or cyan cartridge.

If this happens do you take an air gun and/or vacuum to the drum and interior? Is there any cure or do you just replace the cartidge?

Thanks for all the accum7ulated knowledge here.

Brian

Re: HP 2500 by Stephen (10/20/06 4:27 AM) + / -
If you use a vacuum it MUST be rated for toner.

If a cartridge is leaking, then the blotches should match the leaking color, take a page outside and look at it, fluorescent light just doesn't do well. (I bought a green shirt at a goodwill store about a week ago, and when I got home and looked at it I found out it was gray)

I don't know if they sell 2500 cartridges, you'll have to email and ask since they are not listed, but here is an extremely reliable, quality, high class refilled toner seller.

I almost said good looking, but then I would have had no credibility left:

HP 2550L by dandare (11/12/06 8:47 PM) + / -
Hello:

Can any one tell me where I can get a heater element for my HP 2550L please? I'll replace the foil too.

I'm in Australia so I need a 240volt one.

I'm told the fuser assembly is unique to this model but I can't believe that elements/foils aren't available. One ebay supplier found this too difficult it seems. The HP Part number RG5-7573-110CN costs more than half the original cost of the printer and this makes a straight assembly replacement uneconomic.

Thanks

I have a HP 2500cm. The trouble I am having is when you print it advances the page all the way to the bottom and then starts printing and some times half way through it tells you that there is a paper jam, and when you look in the top there isn't one and I have to hit the ready button to get it to keep printing. After it is done printing it tells me that there was an unuasual paper size used. This happens using both tray 2 & 3.

Now it is also flashing the attention light and advising me that the C toner is low when in actuality it is brand new. Can someone please help me straighten this out.

Thanks

HP 2550L Resetting Printer when light flashes by Anonymous (11/24/06 4:30 PM) +1 + / -
My HP 2550L was only a few months old, when 3 of the 4 yellow lights came on to tell me that the toner was going down. It was still printing fine, though. Then, in the middle of printing a flyer with only black and red in it, still in excellent quality, the light for the yellow cartridge started flashing and no more prints afterwards.
I tried your method of resetting because from what I read in several postings, this seemed to be my problem: That the machine tried to make me believe that the cartridge was now completely empty, when in fact it was not. How annoying after the amount of money I spent on that the printer.
Somehow your method worked, all the lights went off and I thought I'd won against HP. Not yet ...
When I rebooted I was told that I needed to reinstall the driver, my hardware manager confirmed this. Since I didn't have the CD at hand, I found the driver on the HP-website, downloaded and installed it. After rebooting the printer, to my temporary content, spat out a sheet with the message: lcid error. At least it was doing something new now! However, it refused to print anything otherwise. Thus I removed the printer (start, settings, printer, remove). After rebooting, to my pleasure and surprise it is now printing again and none of the lights are on any longer.
I feel like I've beaten HP and saved myself a lot of money.
Hope this might be helpful for other people, too.

By the way, when the toner is going down(fading print results) it helps to take out the cartridge and to shake it and move it about, so that the rest of the toner spreads well inside. It then usually continues to print for quite some time. Method can be repeated several times.

Have fun and thanks for sharing your knowdege in this forum!!
Bettina

from reading comments on this forum it seems that HP is making junk printers. these hundreds of users of HP 2550 series printers are only a few who know about this forum. I believe their must be thousands of other users who are facing the same problems. I am not talking about reviving a drum or empty cartridges, I mean the real problems people are facing. I have a 2550L printer which is not too old and not much used had its cartridges and drum lights on. I replaced all the four cartridges with HP brand OEM but still the lights are on. When I printed the consumables sheet, its showing that Black has 72%, cyan 10%, Magenta 12% and Yellow 5% and the drum 19% left, whereas all the four cartridges are new. This matter needs to be brought to the attention of HP. If you call HP and if your printer is not under warranty, they charge you a fee just to talk to you and they wont listen unless you give your credit card number to them. I bought HP 3600 printer and this printer was printed tilted on the document (different margin a the top and bottom) about 1/8 inch difference. I had to return that printer in the first week of purchase.
I did try to reset the printer using all the info on this forum but did not succeed. If anyone have any suggestions, I will appreciate the gesture. thanks

I NEVER post to forums..... this was such a big help. The procedure by Helo is almost it. (You must keep trying, it will work - it took us 1.5 hours - our printer is a HP 2550L )

You have to give the entire procedure about 2 mins. Then when you let go of the go button, press and HOLD the reset.

It seems to matter when you let go of the go button and when you press the reset button. There is probably some timing involved....

Re: HP 2500 dots on right side by Anonymous (12/30/06 9:17 AM) + / -
Hello!

Well after reading this thread, maybe I should hold off on throwing away the toner cartridges I just replaced! ;-)

Anyway, recently replaced all the color toners with HP OEM cartridges. Now, all prints along the right side have a line of dots in varying colors down the right side of the page. They are spaced about 1/4" to 1/2" apart (varies).

I've checked the drum and the fuser in the back, and eveything seems to be free of any excess toner/dust/gunk.

This is my wife's printer, and she's got to get out some brochures for Sunday. Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Re: HP 2500 dots on right side by moe (12/30/06 10:41 AM) + / -
Since the line of dots are varying colors and there is only the one drum/transfer belt unit, that would be the most logical thing to blame as the cause of the problem. The drum probably has a defect in the photo sensitive coating. This allows toner to collect and appears as a row of dots. They are probably repeated about 3 times on each page as that is the approx. circumference of the drum.

bit late to reply but most likely the fuser unit has failed, heater rod has failed. replace the whole fuser unit, around Ј100..00.
