HP 4000/4050 41.5 Printer Error w/blanks - fix

Just posting this in the hope of making it easier for someone else down the line - we have an HP LaserJet 4050 that suddenly started throwing a 41.5 Printer Error and printing blanks. The fix turned out to be very easy but if I hadn't figured it out it may have resulted in an expensive service call.

My separation roller - the blue & grey roller in the paper tray - had moved out of place. I just pushed it back in place and it was fixed.

Here's a page that has pictures of the separation and feed rollers on a 4000 series printer. The separation roller is part of the paper tray and is shown in the lower picture:

Perhaps, but the database containing the contents of this forum would probably be exponentially larger.

It's cool that he posted this, don't get me wrong. But a lot of new people don't seem to use the Search function at all. Which turns into a lot of repeating previous answers. (Do a search on the drum heater Xerox fault code, and you might see what I mean)

Before I looked it up, I said to myself "he's from NY".
Fact is, people don't want to bother reading. They don't read the forum rules, which do appear in front of them before posting. They don't read the thread and post right below the response to their question.
Since anonymous is a newbie with only the 2 posts in this thread to his credit, he probably doesn't realize I'm the forum moderator and the site is called fixyourownprinter. That implies that you do your own research before you post a problem for the 53rd time. It's actually a lot faster and easier to put HP 4000 41.5 into the search engine as suggested in the forum posting rules, which do pop up before you post.

I have a Hp 4000 printer. I replaced the fuser and it prints when the back door is left open. When I close the door to check if it comes through at the top, it stops right before it gets to the paper delivery assembly. I changed the paper delivery assembly and also the fuser. It still does the same thing, What else could it be?

Could be a problem with the back door or the top cover. To test remove the top cover and defeat the cover open switch and hold the back door closed and print a test sheet. Does it still jam or come out the top. If it comes out the top, then your issue is the top cover or still the paper delivery assemby maybe not installed correctly.

Actually, it turns out that the pickup/separator rollers were not seated properly from a previous service call. Once the rollers were seated all got back to normal. Thanks for your input though. - unknown
Time for the customer to get a new service company. If the rollers were not installed correctly and then the facedown assembly is replaced to try and correct the problem without testing the paper path completely (like tray 1 doing the same thing), diagnostics by the service provider leaves alot to be desired.

I think the issue is you changed your title to HP 4000 paper delivery assembly rather than keeping the same 41.5 error which I now assume was the error you were getting. If it was just reading the previous posts would have solved your issue and what you posted it is a common issue. In fact a couple of years ago I posted a response for a simliar problem which I assume was your issue and if you had done a search you would have found the solution in no time.

I have a tough 41.5 that I have been unable to resolve.

I have tried the following:

new sep clutch
refurbish sep clutch
new sep pad
swapped out T2 unit with known working
replaced pick assembly
refurbished MP clutch assy
cleaned pick solinoid on both the original T2 unit as well as the replacement.
reconditioned pick D rolls on both T2 assemblies

At this point I am unsure what else to do - MP tray works fine.

When printing from T2 I get a blank page half out of the top output assy before the unit stops with a 41.5/13.2 error.

I dont feel that the laserscanner/ECU is going to resolve this issue as the MP tray works fine.

I have viewed each thread on the 41.5 in the forums to no avail. Any further assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

I had a similar problem a while back. It was difficult to figure out and it turned out to be the paper feed assembly located in the front of the printer. P/N= RG5-2651-090CN It has an electric motor/clutch on the end that was not working properly. But, if i remember correctly it would stop printing with that 41.5 error.
Before you change that, look in the paper tray from the back of the printer when it is printing and make sure that the paper pickup assembly is only rotating once when it picks up paper. If it rotates more that once it is not working properly and should be repaired or replaced.

Turns out the ECU was the problem.

I swapped parts in the following order testing after each replacement with known working parts:

1. checked separation roller/clutch installation
2. separation roller
3. separation clutch ( new and refurbished )
4. T2 assembly ( whole unit )
5. refurbished MP clutch assembly
6. replaced MP pick assembly ( including the clutch )
7. Cleaned T2 pick solinoid of all residual tape
8. refurbish D pick rollers on T2 assembly
9. MP pick assembly again ( per Doug's suggestion )
10. ECU/DC Controller

In 99\% of the cases the issue should have been resolved by step 3. Being that it was not and the fact that the service manual information is lacking it became a witch hunt.

I think I have summed up all possible parts save for the laser scanner that can cause this issue. I hope that this post helps someone else in the future with a persistant 41.5.

Apenas afixando isto na esperança de fazê-la mais fácil para alguma outra pessoa abaixo a linha - nós temos um cavalo-força LaserJet 4050 que comece de repente jogar um erro de 41.5 impressoras e imprimir espaços em branco. O reparo girado para fora para ser muito fácil mas se eu não o figurar para fora pode ter resultado em um atendimento técnico caro.
Meu rolo da separação - o rolo azul & cinzento na bandeja de papel - tinha-se movido fora do lugar. Eu empurrei-o apenas para trás o lugar e era fixo.
Está aqui uma página que tenha retratos dos roletes da separação e da alimentação em uma impressora de 4000 séries. O rolo da separação é peça da bandeja de papel e é mostrado no retrato mais baixo:

I just had this problem on an HP 4000.

Someone had already "fixed" the sticky solenoid in the lower half of the printer, by cleaning all the sticky stuff out, so the problem came back.

However, he did not replace the pad.

It seems that the pad has another function besides noise reduction - when the solenoid is energized without the pad, the arm is momentarily magnetized, and this also causes enough sticking to let another sheet feed.

I installed a pad (a tiny piece of peel and stick felt), and the 41.5 errors, extra sheets of paper in printer, etc. all went away.

I have a buddy that fixes lots of printers for a school district, and he is the one that told me about this.

The pad has to be there...

Magnetism has absolutely nothing to do with it. The pad controls both metal on metal noise and stickiness. If there's even the slightest bit of adhesive left, it will get even stickier when the solenoid heats up. This is what I use http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/specials/misc/tools/S97

I assume you are referring to a designjet 4000 plotter and if so should have posted a new thread since this one is for laserjet. To make you life easier read below:

System Error: 93:11
Problem
Description:
Unable to pressurize the IDS.
Corrective Action: Try the following:
Remove ALL the Ink Cartridges and reinstall them one by one in to the Printer.
Replace the Ink Cartridges.
Replace the APS Assembly ⇒ Page 8-42.
If the System Error continues, replace the Ink Supply Tubes and Trailing Cable ⇒ Page 8-33.

I'm a little confused - no, I have an HP4000tn Laserjet and I have no idea why you thought it was a plotter. The original posting worked for my issue and I was just happy I found it & it worked & wanted to thank the person who posted it. - unknown
I was responding to the post by Raymond above and did not realize it was back in July. Sorry for any confusion but sometimes the arrangement of posts on this site does not always fall into date sequence and I fell into the trap.

aardvarknine. You are the man!!! Thx for the info. The help docs I got from HP was leading me to believe I was going to have to replace the engine controller board and/or the laser scanner. Your fix took all of 30 seconds to resolve the error.

gentlemen

i could use some help on an error with HP 4050 lazer jet printer. printer worked fine till yesterday 5/4/11. now printer says out of paper error when tray is full... i ck'd the menu and printed it . configuration is correct.

is there a sensor to replace or a flag that may be broken?

please advise if any has had this experience

We are having the 41.5 error and have replaced all rollers for the tray 2 on an HP LaserJet 4000. We have purchased the tray 2 drive clutch, but now find that we don't know how to install. Can someone direct us to installation instructions for the clutch?

Here in the future, 2014 to be exact, our 41.5 error was fixed by pushing the roller back into contact with the clutch. Easy peasy.
