I see that dell is now selling Dell branded Laser and inkjet printers. Does anyone know who's really making these printers for Dell? What engine are the laser printers based on? What toner cartridges are they compatible with? They are priced very reasonably and I'm considering buying some, but I'm concerned that right now you can only buy supplies from Dell and they're really going to gouge you on the cost of consumables.
All you need to know is that they aren't Canon engines. Canon has an exclusive agreement with HP. Since they aren't Canon engines, they aren't even worth considering. What you are going to get are difficult to find consumables, high priced consumables, and a disposable printer because it costs more to repair than to buy a new one.
Funny - what I got with HP when I bought a $500 all-in-one unit about 3 years ago was a unit with not-too-easy to find, VERY high priced consumables and am now being told it is disposable(HP is telling me this) because the error message it has can't be fixed. Search HP Officejet d135 Scanner failure error message and you'll see what I mean. This Dell unit looks very nice to me and I will NEVER buy HP (or guess I should say Canon) again! I would like to know if anyone has any input as to compatibility to other (generic) cartridges as replacements do seem rather expensive - however, they are about same $ as HP ones I used.....
Wrong. Only the 1100 and 1600 are made by Sammy. The rest are POS Lexmarks. As for the Sammys being bad, point out one model that sucks, and I'll be surprised. Give me a specific model (except the 2010, cuz I have only put a couple out so far, and I can't really debate that one yet. I am not impressed with it.) Their color is Minolta (BARF) :-) PCRMike
Re: Dell printers by pcrmike (10/23/06 9:22 AM) reply
I would go with the Sammy, hands down. Real fusers with real rollers, not the crappy films. Also, better cost of ownership. The Brothers are fairly decent on toners, but when you replace the drum every 3-5 toners, you get raked over the coals. Much better in my experience (5 years with both). Get a 2010 for home use, and you will like it a lot. :-)PCRMike

Also, Jerico, the 1610 is the same as the 2010 but a little slower. No matter. Good machines. I have about 30 out now and was surprised at how tough they are for a little squirt of a machine. We have been offering the carts to our customers for about $35 and they are tickled. Cost of ownership. That's where it's at. :-)PCRMike
Re: Dell printers by pcrmike (3/28/07 3:49 PM) reply
They do that so you can buy ink from them at a stupid-high price. How nice of them! LOL! Really, though, they are a piece of crap on their inkjets, but teh 1100 is a great little laser mono, based on the Samsung ML 2010. Good machine. :-)PCRMike

Do you have a list of Dell printers and their Lexmark equivalent model numbers. I just got a Dell 1710, a 5110 and a 5210 under contract and I'd like to explore other parts suppliers besides Dell.

I have a 924 all in one inkjet that does prints pretty well for a cheap printer. Its annoying to use. I use it mostly to scan and print a few color prints. The printer cost $30 new with the 2 ink cartridges. A sucker draw price. It costs about $37 for one color and $27 for one black cartridge as they are Dell specific. The cost per page is high. about 50 pages color and 200 black per cartridge. when powered on the printer wants to print an alignment page and tells the computer it is busy. I know to hit cancel to get the printer to skip the alignment page but the kids print the alignment page thus wasting color and black ink. If you refill the cartriges you cant reset the ink counter to zero and you get a flashing warning light and a nagging low ink warning. You can buy refilled cartridges but they come with the warning that they give a low ink warning. The printer looks similar to a lexmark and the cartriges are close but i havent seen any that will work in the 924. I havent tried any of Dells laser printers but I am looking. My HP 6MP just crashed . Ive printed a few thousand pages with it and have less than $150 bucks in it counting it, repair parts, and cartridges and toner.
Re: Dell printers by pcrmike (10/14/07 7:03 PM) reply
Try the 1110 if you want a Dell. The carts are very decently priced, and they share parts with several Samsungs which are robust little boxes. I build the toners for these, and have a lot of the Sammy version out there and have been far more pleased than with the new HP's. :-)PCRMike
Re: Dell printers by suztqmil (10/15/07 8:00 AM) reply
Suz, it is a static brush, and has broken out of the printer. Unfortunately, no way to put it back in. Sorry. They won't sell you a new brush either. :-( PCRMike

Bought a Dell 1320c for one of our sites. Cheap, good output. The toner carts are so small I figured they wouldn't be 2000 sheets. So I have my people do status pages when they change the carts and they are getting 2000 (-/-) pages. We used to use HP and a LOT of inkjets. You guys know IJ carts are $$+++, but we've been getting good $/pg on these Dell lasers units. The biggest prob is that now that the users have a better $/pg, they are printing MORE color pgs (ARGH!). :-) End of story: We have four 1320c's at four sites. The biggest prob. we've had so far (4+ months) is getting replacement toner carts. The 1320c's are cheap and they work (I may get one for home). So cheap that if they break outside the 1yr warr it will probably be easier (and cheaper) to get another than to fix it. 1 other thing: They must be doing well 'cause Staples is now selling them. But try Dell directly (esp. on replacement toners!!) for lower $$. P.S. #2: The installation video was pure great! I haven't seen many but this was a wonderful thing to watch! Very nicely done.

Try this company. They do a refill kit which came with very clear instructions on what screws to loosen and caps to remove to refill with their own toner that they sell.
I have a 5110cn that i bought last week. I've printed about 6000 copies and everything was great, until the yellow stopped printing. Called Dell and they told me it was 80% likely to be the drum. The toner cartridge is full, and when i ran the diagnostic on yellow, the cartridge
I have an AOI 962. It prints fine but it scans pure black. I think the light is out, in fact it is glowing orange. I need to ID and replace it...any help?
I have a Dell 1110 printer. Mostly it's nice, but it frequently pulls through 2 pages at a time, ruining page order. I don't overstuff the paper feed and I set the paper guides right, but it still pulls through too many. Know why?
Re: Dell printer 1110 fails to pick up paper by Betta (6/22/08 2:49 PM) reply
I got a brand new Dell 1110. When it starts to print, the paper travels 3 inches and stops. Also, the printer makes a chattering noise. What could be happening?
To both the people with new Dell printers: Did you contact Dell about the problems? I mean, seriously. They have at least a month (or six-month) support of all products. CALL THEM!!! Go to their website! They have a VERY GOOD Chat option that I use all the time. PLUS if it is something under warranty, they ship out repairs ASAP.
The double paper feed sounds like you are not "breaking" the paper when you put it in the machine. You have to "flip through" a new pack of paper to break the tension and the static electric bond that paper can pick up. I thought everyone knew this.
As for paper traveling 3 inches and then stopping: If you are NOT using Vista, then uninstall the printer completely from your O/S. Then go back to the manual and see how to install it properly, disks and all. Sounds like the command on paper length is screwed up.
If you ARE using Vista, then go to your local computer store, beg them to sell you a copy of Windows XP, install it instead and your computer will magically run faster, happier and more often with the software you use.

I have a Dell 1110 Laser Printer that I recently acquired and the feeder roller that picks up the paper has no rubber grip on it. The rubber was so dry that it broke on the first page I tried to put through the printer.
Does anyone know how to replace this feeder roller, or could point me to schematics of this printer?
Thanks!

I have a 3010cn laser printer that has barely been used. The warrenty has expired unfortunatly. It now thinks the top lid is open all the time, therefore, I can't use it. Dell has been no help at all. They just want me to buy a new printer. They won't even talk to me about it. I'm not technical at all, but I think a lever inside is loose or broken and that's what is making the printer think the lid is still open. Can anyone out there help me get this problem fixed or tell me who can fix it for me? Pleeeeeease. :(
Re: Dell printers by mprsg (edited 2/10/09 4:51 AM) reply
Luckily, the Dell 1110 is out of production now :).
We have 5 of those. They are probably the worst printers we EVER had. If you're lucky, they can be used several months without problem. A co-worker (who has MORE than 5 of those, in another office), tells me there are only few problems with them. I totally disagree. In our case, we had paper jam problems on every 5. I called Dell, and they swapped 3 of the 5. One of the new ones: the very first page: yes... PAPER JAM!! Brand new or 'old': no difference - they are unreliable. Really man, those printers are rubbish. Well, if you're skilful/handy enough and don't want to buy a more expensive one, you might be able to live with one of them. The employees have asked me, i think, 20 times in a year to help with paper jams and other problems. Yes, there are other problems too, with this Dell 1110. Now and then, the printer refuses to accept the toner cardridge. Sometimes i have to insert it once or twice more, before the printer returns to work.
Someone said: "Try the 1110 if you want a Dell." Obviously, i totally disagree with that.
Someone wrote: "The double paper feed sounds like you are not "breaking" the paper when you put it in the machine. You have to "flip through" a new pack of paper to break the tension and the static electric bond that paper can pick up. I thought everyone knew this."
Probably exactly because many people THINK you have to flip through the paper, "double feedings" arise. I once called our paper manufacturer (Niceday). (Because of the massive paper jam problems with the Dell 1110.) They specifically told me NOT to "flip through" the new pack of paper - because it will CAUSE static electric bond!! If you think about it, that could be true: if you flip through them, they rub against each other. And as we all know: rubbing causes static electrical bond.
Anyway, old style deskjets/inktjets have sometimes problems with paper jams too; but if you already have such printer, i see no reason to 'upgrade' to this Dell 1110.
I would rather have a 15 year old HP laserjet 4 than this one. Generally, a 15 year old Laserjet 4 is much more reliable than a brand new Dell 1110. (Not that i never got problems with the Laserjet 4.)
Re: DELL PRINTER REPAIR!!!! by TRIGGER75 (2/10/09 6:48 AM) reply
I have a Dell All-In-One Printer #922 with ink cartridge carrier loaded with new & full black & color cartridges jammed in "home" position. Color cartridge lock-down device is sprung open & won't stay closed and locked. This prohibits carrier from moving to center of track for opening. Dell Support says unit cannot be repaired. So I bought a new one. I'm stingy & want to retrieve the new, full of ink cartridges. Anyone know how to disassemble this printer to accomlish that?
I am having a problem with a verticle streak down the left side of the page. especially in black. I use recycled toner cartridges from Monster toner have had success in past. Dell says replacement toner is problem Any ideas?
I have a new Dell 1320c Laster Printer with less than 2000 copies, mostly black ink - After running all of the diagnostics suggested by the Dell Troubleshotter site, I am still having problems with my copy printing black ink...I have changed to a new black toner cartridge. Any suggestions?
Why is this Dell 944 printing light when I print with black ink? I use refilled cartriges from INKSELL.com. There is ALWAYS a message now that says, "ink level low". But I ignore it as long it was printing out reasonably good. (Which it was until just recently).
I had another problem. Paper jam/ with message on the little window to "clear paper jam". When I clicked on the check mark, the thing would turn off completely. I could not find any jam anywhere. no scraps...nothing. SO I searched on line.Followed advice to clean some "strip". Also tipped it upside down (after taking off the cover) and shook it and slapped it a couple of times...and it works now. So.any clue why it's printing light?
Does anyone have this problem? You go and print on a Dell Laser Printer 1110, and an error says "Cover open", then you look at the printer ... Does it look like the front cover is open? No ... but there is a red light on top. What other kind of bogus error is the printer experiencing?
It might seem like a bogus error, but the door usually has some kind of protrusion that goes into a slot. Behind the slot there is either a mechanical or optical switch that senses when the door is closed. What usually happens is either the plastic protrusion breaks or the switch gets damaged or knocked out of place. It's up to you to figure out what happened since you can see it and we can't.
OK then. There is a plastic part that does slide in a hole, still intact, and a metal switch that it touches, but either way, I took some compressed air and shot into there. Maybe if there was some way to "extend" the plastic protrusion, or make it where the mechanical switch doesn't get so flimsy that it causes so many "Cover Open" errors?
Re: Dell printer 3130cn by tmckinney (2/10/10 11:15 AM) reply
Tom, I have the Dell 3130cn laser printer. I've only had it for about 3 months, though, so I'm not sure how much help I can be for you. I've certainly had no issues with it so far. It prints fast and very well--it prints photos better than my old Canon inkjet printer did. It sure prints photos better than any other laser printer I've ever seen. I use the 3130cn to print all sorts of stuff, including my Rockland High School (Maine) Class of 1952 Newsletter, about 6 to 10 pages three times a year, made up of text and lots of photos, about 100 copies each issue. Even though I use the "fine photo" setting in the printer driver to print the newsletter, which causes the printer to print slower than its full speed, it still prints 3 times faster and better than did my old Canon inkjet. And when using my old Canon inkjet to print a newsletter issue I used to have to change cartridges 5 or 6 times. With the 3130cn, of course, I don't have to change a single one. What a relief that is. The print recorder in the 3130cn tells me that I've printed close to 3,000 pages so far, mostly black text & color photos and I'm warned that I'll soon have to change the black toner cartridge (the cartridges that come with the printer are rated for 3,000 impressions). The 9,000 impression replacement cartridges from Dell are very expensive, so I'm going to try a "compatible" replacement cartridge from LD Products in Long Beach, CA, when my original black cartridge finally runs dry. I have the replacement cartridge on hand and will post on its working here when I do get to use it. Hope it works because it would save me over $100 per cartridge. I don't know anything about how to obtain a shop service manual and I don't know if we can refill the original toner cartridges. I'd certainly like to know the answers to both of these if you run across them. It's a BIG printer but it prints beautifully. I'm VERY pleased with its performance so far. I tried several laser papers in it and have been most satisfied with Hammermill's Laser Print paper (with the green butterfly on the ream package), which is available in 24, 28, & 32 lb. thickness. Staples sells it only online but will deliver free to a store near you. It prints superb black text and excellent color photos on this paper. If you have any other specific questions about this printer I'll try to answer them. So far I'm very happy that I bought this printer.
Thanks so much for the detailed account of your experience with this printer. I am a missionary in Belize and we have to rely on the testimony of others when we order a printer.
We use it for newsletters as well as Bible School and Youth ministries.
I will let you know if I can find a shop manual. This is important to us as there are no service stations here. We have to do all of our own service.
Thanks so much.
God bless, Tom McKinney

The Dell 3130cn cartridge is refillable. The difficulty level is about 6 out of 10. You need developer and toner. On the first refill you only need to use the toner because there is usually enough developer for 2 cycles. On the second refill you will need to premix the developer and toner.

Yes but I think the situation with Dell is more like it is with Infoprint... they are just re-branded Lexmarks. Fuji-Xerox makes some of the engines for Lexmark but they don't use the same RIP or software... eg Phaser 5500 vs Lexmark W850 vs Infoprint 1985. Anyone can fix the Infoprint with the Lexmark manual without any hassle or vice-versa, but not the Xerox -- all the error codes and control panel sequences will not be the same.
