 | HP 2100 Laserjet by Pat Pipitone (5/25/00 2:13 PM) reply | + / - | The problem is on multipage prints only, the printer feeds the paper (2nd or subsequent pages) then cycles down. The 2100 reports a paper jam but the paper is not jamed just stopped in the paper path. Single page prints never jam. And if I feed the paper from the front feeder one page at a time, giving it time to pass the first page almost thru the path before droping another sheet, it never stops. The printer is just over a year old (out of warranty by 2 months)of course.
Can you help?

They're just starting to come out of warranty, so I expect to be gaining a lot of experience on them soon. Educated guess would be a sticking registration solenoid. This is a common problem on other HP engines. Might be a future candidate for a DIY kit on our site.

(EASY TO CHECK) with the power off open the top of the printer and look for the sendor take your pen and try and move it back and forth if it is not moving bacj and forth remove the fuser and check to see if the spring has come off happens alot with this machine.

Great try but no cupie-doll.
The 2100 has a sensor (photo-interupter) located at the rear of the machine an integral part of the fuser no doubt, but alas the spring and the lever appear to be in place and functioning... The interupter is another thing alltogether. How can you tell if it is functioning properly? There is also another sensor in the paper pickup assembly it also looks ok and seems to function.. I guess it could be the culpurt. This problem may just take a 2100 trained tech. I have worked on many of the older HP's and Lexmarks but this 2100 has me baffled.

The covers are off and I can observe the paper being fed. It appears to be feeding too soon(good guess). Does the sensor at the fuser end control the feed next sheet cycle.. or does the sensor at the paper pick up end control it? If you don't see it as a sensor problem, what does control the feed cycle?

We've only had 2 of them in our shop, one bad out of the box and one with a fuser problem. I'm not familiar with the paper feed on it. Usually there is a solenoid that sticks and lets the second sheet feed prematurely. Some printers, the more expensive ones use electromagnetic clutches. That's what you want to observe. See what actually is letting the pickup roller go.
