Epson ROM reset doesn't work

Epson ROM reset doesn't work by Shannon Meisenhe (4/1/03 8:06 AM) reply + / -
I have four 1270's that are plagued by the "all lights blinking" problem. I have tried the ROM reset procedure on all of them as prescribed by Epson tech support, but it doesn't work. Is there a device, and where can I purchase one, that will reset the ROM? Epson repair centers have to use something to reset the ROM adn at $60 a piece I'm not willing to go that route.

Any ideas?

Re: Epson ROM reset doesn't work by Denny Conway (4/2/03 3:36 PM) reply+2 + / -
SHANNON: The reason is because that MASTER RESET/ROM RESET does not actually reset the problem you have. The reset your using returns your printer to FACTORY DEFAULTS and resets your printers INK LEVEL COUNTER. When you run that reset, you must install NEW CARTRIDGES, or your printer will run out of ink and never know it and that usually results in CLOGGING of the "printhead nozzles"...Your problem is that the FLASHING ERROR LIGHTS are indicating that your "Waste Ink Pads" are full and need to be replaced and then the "Waste Ink Counter" must be correctly reset. The FACTORY DEFAULT/ROM RESET does not do that procedure...I'm sorry, but as an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", I can't give it to you legally...You can read the following from another person who had the same problem on a "1280": "Re: Epson 580 error fix
I used this program to fix my 1280 and it worked perfectly thank you very very much it save me over $100. I also tried to use another program that people were suggesting but it did not work I even had to pay $10 for it. The program at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html is hands down the best program for the job."...I know this is not the answer that you wanted. I hope this at least explains your PROBLEM and the SOLUTION that you tried and why it did not work. Also, maybe you can be helped by that web-site reference posted by another person on this "printer repair site"...Good luck! Denny Conway

Thanks for the reply Denny.

I d/l the app suggested and it will work except that the computer is unable to communicate with the printer in its present state. Do I need to remove/replace the waste ink pads to get the printer to initialize?

The program says it can't find the printer.

I checked the printer properties and it says "USB not connected"

Thanks,
Shannon

Re: Epson ROM reset doesn't work by Denny Conway (4/8/03 6:00 PM) reply + / -
SHANNON: Your printer would not actually know if you replaced the pads, or not. If you don't replace them, there's a chance they can leak. It seems most people don't replace them first. If you don't replace them, you should at least put some type of catch pan under your printer, just in case. Maybe like those FOIL CATCH PANS you can get at most stores, to put in the bottom of your oven to catch overflows while baking...If your PC can't find your printer, then there's a good chance your PC might actually have a problem. My guess is your USB DRIVERS are either not installed correctly, your USB PORT is bad/defective, or USB is not turned on in your PC's internal BIOS/CMOS SETTINGS. I'm sorry, but I'm not allowed to help in that area and it normally requires a PC trained person. You can easily cause more serious damage to your PC if you don't know what you are doing...Try opening your PRINTER PROPERTIES UTILITY and look under the DETAILS TAB: under "Print to the Following Port", should be listed as "EPUSB1" or something very close, but not "LPT.1 [Epson Printer Port]". Probably not much help, I'm sorry to say...Just in case your USB Drivers are not installed correctly, I'm sending you some installation instructions from Epson: ADDITIONAL INFO ON POSSIBLE "USB DRIVER PROBLEMS": I ran across an "Epson Technical Service Bulletin", covering all "Epson USB Products" and the subject was "USB Driver Installation". Like most of my replies, a lot of info to read, but remember, this did come from Epson" and not from my experience. I make no promises, just report what I can, hopeing it may help someone..... ""This bulletin was created to inform you of the correct method of installing the USB driver... UPDATE OF THE USERS GUIDE, #1: Remove the partially installed driver files. #2: Remove the programs IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER: "Epson Status Monitor" [FIRST]; "Epson Printer Software" [SECOND]; "Epson USB Printer Device" [THIRD]... INSTRUCTIONS ON REMOVING PROGRAMS, #1: Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/"Add & Remove Programs", remove file by selecting the file and pressing the "Remove" button. #2: If the item "Epson USB Printer Device" is not displayed on the menu Start/Settings/Control Panel/"Add & Remove Programs", then use the following procedure: [FIRST] Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager/Other Devices. If you have an "Unknown Device", press the button "Remove" and delete the"Unknown Device". [SECOND] If you do not find an "Unknown Device", run the Uninstaller program "EPUSBUN.exe" on the CD-ROM [Printer Software for Epson [your model number] Disc Vol.1.2E]/Win98 and delete unnecessary files for USB device drivers... INSTALLATION PROCEDURE: #1: Reinstall the "Epson Printer Software" and "Epson Status Monitor". #2: Connect the PC to the Printer with the USB cable. #3: Turn on the printer, then turn on the PC. #4: If both the printer and PC are "ON", disconnect and reconnect the USB cable. Install the "Epson USB Printer Device", "Epson Printer Software" and "Epson Status Monitor" following the instructions in the Installer...NOTE: DO NOT CANCEL THE INSTALLATION IN THE MIDDLE.""...[END OF BULLETIN"..... MY TECH NOTES: This info included on the Epson Bulletin may not be the answer to your USB problem. It may be for someone else, or may lead you in the right direction. I KNOW NOT EVERYONE: uses "Win's 98"; even has their "Users Guide"; even has their origional CD-ROM, let alone possibly have the Uninstaller Program "EPUSBUN.exe" on that origional CD-ROM Printer Software for Epson "your model number"; or for that matter even use PC"s [I know nothing about MAC Systems]... This Epson Bulletin was written as a "General Guide" to help people having problems with "USB Drivers". EVEN THEN, EPSON MAY NOT ALWAYS BE RIGHT [nothing new, I know]. I submit this Epson Bulletin as it may hopefully help you... Good Luck! Denny Conway

I had the same problem and discovered that it is likely a condition where the printer requires a reset because it thinks the waste ink pads are full (mine started flashing during a cleaning cycle and continued to flash). I solved the problem by performing an easy "factory reset". Turn the power off to your 1270 (might need to disconnect from wall). Hold both "ink" and "paper feed" buttons down and turn power back on. When "paper" light blinks, release both buttons, and hold down the "ink" button until the printer resets (about 10 seconds.).

Good Luck.

Bob.

I was running a cleaning cycle on my epson 1520

what could possibly be the reason the manual dosent indicate what to do it just says contact your dealer.I replaced both cartriges but its still flashing

Adrian...FIRST: I'm sorry that I could not reply until now. I was off work from 6/26 until 7/2, while I moved my parents approximatly 300 miles, to live with my wife and I. There was of course, a lot of work that came in while I was gone, so I had to catch up on customers printers and equipment, before I could once again help out. I only help on the "printer repair site" when I have the free time. As I work for a company, my job has to come first...SECOND: FOR QUICKER HELP, YOU SHOULD POST YOUR OWN PROBLEM SEPERATLY, ON AN INDIVIDUAL MESSAGE BOARD. It's possible no one may actually help you because they did not read the board you attached your problem to. Sometimes we may just assume that your information was just a reply to that origional posting by the first person on that board and not even read your message. The best chance for help is when you open your own individual message board, listing your problem in as much detail as possible. Your chances of having someone help you, including me if I have the time, will normally be better. I don't answer e-mail requests because I'm an employee of a bussiness and my time is their time...NOW AS TO YOUR POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: GENERAL INFORMATION REGUARDING WHEN ALL LEDS/LIGHTS ARE BLINKING/FLASHING: If all the LED's/LIGHT's are BLINKING/FLASHING on an Epson Printer, that indicates "Maintenance Request Error". The "Maintenance Request Error" is actually a "Waste Ink Pad Overflow Error"... Normally your remedy is to replace the "Waste Ink Pad/Pads" with a new one/ones and then reset the "Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter"...I know this information is not much help, but at least you will know what your ERROR is. I'm sorry, but as an "Epson Authorized Dealer", I'm limited to how much help I'm legally allowed to give...Good Luck! Denny Conway

My Stylus 900 is printing wide horizontal bands of color instead of simple text documents, then indicating it needs a new color cartridge although the cartridge (Epson, not refilled) is new. I've tried every reset key combination I've seen mentioned anywhere, to no avail.

Re: Epson ROM reset doesn't work by Denny Conway (7/9/03 1:57 PM) reply + / -
Bob: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer. It's very possible that you may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem]. Normally when a printer is printing in horizontal bands, it would indicate an electrical problem in either the "main board assembly" [PCB] or the "printhead assembly"...TECH NOTES: BANDING PROBLEMS ON PICTURES AND COPIES PRODUCED: Can be caused by several different reasons...#1: Defective cartridge/one color running low/black ink running low/refilled cartridge/aftermarket, third party ink cartridge/loss of internal pressure on ink cartridge...#2: Clogged nozzle or nozzles...#3: Defective "printhead assembly/nozzle assembly", or other hardware problem such as "main board assembly" [PCB]...#4: Printhead is mis-aligned...#5: paper THICKNESS verses position of "paper thickness lever" ["+" = THICK paper and "0" = REGULAR/NORMAL paper]...#6: Resolution of the image you are printing, is causing the artifact to appear from the printer driver...POSSIBLE SHORTING PROBLEM ON "900": I have ran into a couple of "900's" that had a short circuit problem in the metal shielding box that mounts over the "power supply unit/board assembly" and it did cause different electrical problems. I have seen the end with the holes/cutouts in it, actually have that side of the shielding plate bend from a straight 90 degree angle to about a 45 degree angle. At the 45 degree angle the metal side plate can touch electrical components, causing the shorting condition. You will have to pull the bottom board assembly to be able to visually see the metal shielding plate/box. If yoe remove that metal box assy, check for a bent side and then straighten it. Then use electrical tape and tape all the edges that fit down onto the power supply board. Less chance of contact causing another shorting condition. Of course, if you find that side was in contact with the board, there's always a chance that damage was actually done to the "power supply assy"...The other area that I've seen some electrical shorting occur is on the right side of the printer [from the front]. With the top cover removed you can look at the right side and see several white electrical ribbon cables running along that side. Very carefully pull those cables loose from where they are taped to the metal frame area and then put strips of black electrical tape onto the metal frame area. The black tape acts as insulation between the ribbon cable and the metal frame and helps to stop possible shorts. Use black electrical tape between any ribbon cables and metal areas on the right side and in the back side or any other area you can easily get too...Good Luck! Denny Conway

This is really great information! I purchased an Epson 2200 because my 1270 went into flashing light mode. I called Epson and it was going to cost an arm and leg to get it repaired - don't remember the whole explaniation. I followed the reset instructions from Bob in this thread and WALA~ my 1270 is working again. I'm really happy with my 2200, but I could have saved a lot of money had I read this information earlier.

BTW - where can I get more information about replacing the waste ink pad and resetting the printer? Is this something I should do from time to time? Not much in the user's guide about maintenance.

Geat help - thanks a lot!
Ben

I have not had alot of luck in locating a service center for Epson products. I have a CX5200 I am really happy with. The problem with it is the "nut behind the wrench" probably forced an ink cartridge and bent a contact. Any way you help would be greatlt appreciated.

I have an Epson Stylus Photo 750 and all three lights started flashing, possibly indicating waste ink pads full. I cleaned the ink pads, but I have been unsuccessful resetting the error. Someone on this message board suggested I go to http://www.otd.com.ua/soft.htm for software to clear the error. I purchased the software, but when I ran it all I got was garble on my screen. After several emails to support, I was told I had to clear the error before the software will work. To their credit, they refunded my money. I tried the reset procedure described above, but it did not work. I love this printer and don't want to have to abandon it. If anyone has any idea what I can do I'd greatly appreciate it.

Denny Conway sent me info posted by others regarding ROM reset on Epson printers. One said with power off press and hold the load/eject and cleaning buttons while pressing the power button. When the paper light comes on press and hold the cleaning button for about 6 seconds. After the printer finishes cycling, the ROM should be reset. It worked for me. Thank you Denny.

Re: Epson ROM reset doesn't work by Denny Conway (9/29/03 10:18 AM) reply + / -
Anonymous: It would help to actually know just what model of Epson Ink Jet Printer that you were talking about...JUST SO YOU WILL KNOW, ON MOST OLDER MODEL EPSON PRINTERS: When you reinstall a previously removed ink cartridge or even install a new ink cartridge correctly, with the power on, the printer always assumes you are installing a new cartridge and resets the "internal ink counter". When you press the ink button a second time as is the normal installation process, the printer goes thru new cartridge initialization, which correctly resets the ink levels and resets the printer so that it correctly knows that new cartridges were installed. If the power was turned off when you replaced the new cartridges, then the printer never new they were actually installed. Even if the replacement procedure was correctly done, it sounds like the new cartridges did not get initialized correctly...The first thing you need to do is try to trick your printer, so you can install a new cartridge or cartridges correctly. Have your printer turned on, with no paper loaded and leave the Top Cover open so you can see the printhead assy moving during the next steps. Now push in on the center PAPER BUTTON. Watch inside your printer and you will see the printhead assembly unlock and then start moving towards the left slightly. As it moves unplug your printer and that assembly can then be manually moved back and forth to the position where you can remove the ink cartridge or cartridges that are causing problems. Remove only one ink cartridge at a time, so you can correctly initialize each new ink cartridge installed. After removing one cartridge, then close the lid over where the cartridge fits and plug your printer back in and turn it on. The printer will of course not find a cartridge and the Ink Light will come on solid red. Now when you push the INK BUTTON the holder assy will move to the correct position for a NEW cartridge to be installed correctly...TECH NOTES: Unfortunatly, once you remove any ink cartridges, no matter if they are new or almost empty, the internal pressure thats put inside them at the factory will be released. With no internal pressure there's no fresh ink that flows in and pushes out the air that got in when you removed the cartridge in the first place. That's why Epson says to install a new cartridge anytime you remove any cartridge...Once you install one new cartridge, then close the cartridge locking lever/lid [over the ink cartridge] and push in on the INK BUTTON a second time. The Printer will now assume you installed a new cartridge [which I hope you did] and go thru NEW CARTRIDGE INITIALIZATION correctly. If you need to replace the other ink cartridge, then just start over and remove the second cartridge this time. After initialization of both cartridges is complete, your printer should now print ok, unless you have other problems. If you did happen to just reinstall your old cartridges you will have additional problems and its probable that those cartridges will not print correctly now. If it is not printing and you simply reinstalled your previously removed cartridges, you can try running sets of "printhead cleaning cycles" and "nozzle tests" to try and get those nozzles to open up again and try to get the ink to start flowing again. The only problem is that running those tests wastes a lot of ink, but you may have nothing to loose at this point. Its even possible that you can use up all the ink in a new cartridge before you can completely get it to print normally again. You may even have to run as many as 8 to 10 sets of tests to try and get the nozzles to open up again and start printing. Remember that you have to run a nozzle test after every printhead cleaning test ran, because the nozzle test is used as a point of reference for the next cleaning test you run. If after 10 sets of tests you cannot get the printing to completely start up, you might have to try using new ink cartridges, or even use a "Printhead Cleaning Kit", because its possible that you may even have a CLOG. Sometimes a clog is so bad that you may never get all the nozzles to open up, especially if you were not actually using New Epson Ink Cartridges in the first place. Non-Epson Ink or Ink Cartridges is the wrong ink and can cause additional problems and sometimes even cause damage to the printhead assembly...Good Luck! Denny Conway

1280 Waste Ink Counter Reset Procedure by Siochain (4/22/05 12:42 PM) reply + / -
Alternating Power/Ink lights flashing on a 1280, from all of my research means "Maintenance Request Error", which means that the waste ink pads are full. These must be replaced or they will overflow. I'm writing because in the process of repairing this problem on my printer, I used the the reset procedure explained in the repair manual over and over, but it wouldn't reset my printer. If anyone else is going through the same headache, I'd like to offer what worked for me: Download the freeware program from http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html (site also listed in Shannon's help thread above) and install it on a PC hooked up to the printer (sorry, if you use a mac, you will have to find a PC to do this). Reset the Waste Ink Counter, then perform the manual button sequence as described in the help section that comes with the software. Restart the printer and it should reset. Best of luck with getting your 1280 back up and running as inexpensively and easily as possible!

Epson 1280 Alternating Power/Ink Buttons Flashing by george4nyy (11/4/05 12:56 PM) reply + / -
Thanks for all the posts, much more helpful than the Epson technician that suggested that I had to take my 1280 to an authorized service center. He made no mention of the waste ink pad possibly being full, which creates this unique flashing error.

Basically, resetting the waste ink counter is what worked for me, a little of my own improv. in step 2 but this is exactly what I did...

1. Turned off printer and disconnected power cord from outlet and then computer interface from the back of the printer.

2. Opened cover, pushed down little white lever that holds ink carriage and pulled out the entire ink carriage manually 6-7 inches. This gave me the access to clean the waste ink pad (sponge), which I did with a folded paper towel.

3. Re-attached power cord to outlet.

4. Held down both maintenance and roll paper button simultaneously, then turned on the power.

5. Continued to hold buttons until the maintenance and power lights flashed together, I then released both buttons and quickly held down only the roll paper button.

6. In 5-10 seconds the printer started to initialize.

7. Once the initialization was complete, I turned off the power.

8. Reconnected the computer interface.

9. Turned on the printer and I was back in business!

Again step 2 might be extraneous, this is what worked for me. Good Luck.

-George

Looking for help to fix flashing lights issue on my Epson 2200 at power up.
All lights are flashing with paper light on. The power button does not light up at the same time as the lights are flashing, 2 ink lights light up just before all lights flash. The manual suggests that this issue (all lights flashing/paper light and power light not lit up) signifies that the paper cutter is not installed properly. However it is installed properly. The printer was bought 2nd hand but shipped with ink cartridges installed and print head not taped down... all the way to The Bahamas. I think this has caused a problem. I can't afford to ship this back to US to be repaired. I think the ink pads are full or the ink cartridges shipped installed caused an error. Can't communicate with the printer through the mac as I'm getting a 'general error message'

Any ideas?

Thank you for your 1280 printer reset fix. It worked perfectly. I spent 45 minutes on the phone & 2 emails to Epson tech support to no avail. They were unwilling to offer this simple reset procedure & said my only fix would be to send it to an authorized repair facility (75 miles away) at an estimated cost of $120 + shipping. A very disappointing experience dealing with Epson. Thanks again for your no cost cure.

Re: 1280 SSC utility additions by Anonymous (12/30/08 1:42 PM) reply + / -
Epson 1280 owners using free SSC Utility mentioned above....

After choosing "Reset Protection Counter" (rt click on SSC icon at bottom right of your Windows desktop, if it does not show up, minimize the main SSC window, should then show up) then power off printer and UNPLUG printer. Wait 30 seconds, plug in and power on.

Could not get it to stick with power off at printer only, must also unplug printer. Now seems to have worked.

Also, used chop sticks to remove "waste pad" aka sponge, located between black and grey rollers. Dont worry about the fact that it appears that you cannot remove this sponge due to plastic bits. Just work at lifting the sponge out of its "cave" and lay it on some paper towels. Then rinse and dry. Reinstall.

Uncannily, stupid, difficult and ridiculous procedure and PC software utility. Macs rule.

I have been researching this problem for days, and this solution is the only one that worked for me, thank you George! I was ready to junk the printer. Apparently, you can sop up the ink in the saturated ink waste pads and the printer senses this. Then, the hold down buttons while powering up thing will work!!!!! But not without the excess ink gone. It looked like a very complicated procedure to remove all the covers and take those out, and then get software onto a PC (I have a Mac) and try to reset.... what a bunch of BS! Why doesn't Epson help out folks with this easy reset? Because they are trying to sell printers of course!! The tech I spoke with directed me to a web page where they were selling printers for bargains! What a joke! They were not even the best prices I saw on Amazon. I will never buy another Epson again because they are dishonest. A simple fix like this and they won't tell you about it; disgusting!! What a world!

Brenda, I recall it was such a relief finding that solution that I just wanted to share it with others, so I'm glad to hear after all these years that it worked for you. Still have that printer despite using mostly digital color copiers now.... once in a while I still plug it in to run some photos. I find it more useful to 'google' problems instead of talking to tech's that are not that experienced.... kudos of course to sites like fixyourownprinter.com!
