I try to help when I can, but I need a little more information from you... SOME POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: #1: Empty cartridge/bad cartridge/refilled cartridge...#2: The "printhead nozzles" may still be clogged...#3: The "cleaning station assy"/"cap assy" may be defective/clogged/out-of-position/etc...#4: Your color "printhead assy" may have been damaged when you cleaned it, or just went bad...#5: The "smudges/lines" may be caused by a dirty underside/backside on the "printhead assy"...SORRY, LOTS OF POSSIBLE PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS AVAILABLE...SOME GENERAL EPSON PRINTER RELATED QUESTIONS: Do you use Epson cartridges? Do you refill your own cartridges, or have someone refill them? Is your "black cartridge/system" working normally, or is it also having problems? Are you getting any "error messages" listed on your monitor, from your printer? Are there any "error led's" flashing, or solid, on your printer itself? Was your printer making any unusual noises prior to the previous problem? Did you recently change brands of ink that you use in your printer? Have you tried to use any printhead cleaning solutions/methods, other than an actual "cleaning cartridge"? Have you tried to inject some type of cleaner into the "printhead nozzes", possibly with force? Did you happen to used "compressed air" [canned, or air compressor] to try and blow-out a possible "clog"? Do you use the printers on/off switch to power off your printer, or do you happen to use the on/off switch on your "surge suppressor"/"power strip" instead?...I have lots of in-depth "cleaning & service information" saved as text files. If you need detailed help on possible trouble areas, just let me know thru this printer repair help site. Some people know a lot about printer cleaning and servicing and other people know very little. You let me know how much help you need and I'll help if I can...Good Luck! Denny Conway

|
 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (3/10/03 5:14 PM) reply | + / - | FOR ELISHA: Like I wrote in my reply to William, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. You are just going to have to basically start eliminating possible problems. The downside to that is you may not always hit your problem on the first try. Look at the questions in my first reply. If any of them fit you, or your printer, we might be able to narrow your printers basic problem down to one area...WITHOUT MORE INFO TO GO ON: I would recommend cleaning and lubing your printers "carriage assy", as this area causes most noise problems and the resulting strange problems. Even if this turned out not to be your problem, this area would probably have needed the cleaning and lubing in the near future anyway. If you look inside your printer and you can see a lot of dust/dirt/hair/lint/etc, its a good chance the noise is coming from the carriage assy. One of the best QUICK TESTS is to take a white rag and carefully rub the front side of the long, round carriage shaft/rod/bar. This is the shaft that passes thru the "print head assy"/"print cartridge holder assy". This shaft is metal, looks like chrome and when not dirty, looks shiney. After you clean off the front of this shaft with a white rag, look at the rag. If it has a blackish/greasy look on it, then the carriage assy is probably dirty and should be cleaned and lubed...If you don't know how to properly clean and lube that carriage assy, just let me know. I have saved information, that I can post, that can be used on most "Epson Ink Jet Style Printers". There's a lot to read, because I go in-detail, step by step, but its not that hard to do... I work for the only "Epson Premier Service Dealor" in Northern California. Also theres no one close in Southern Oregon and North Western Nevada, so a lot of Epson customers call me for help and advice. Some customers live so far away it makes it NOT ECONOMICAL to bring in, or even send in their ink jet printers for repairs. In some of these cases I can teach them how to do their own minor repairs. I had one lady that was in her 70's do the cleaning and lubing of her printers "carriage assy", so just about anyone can do it if they are willing to try...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by David G (3/13/03 11:12 PM) reply | + / - | Denny, I've got an Epson C80 that has been sitting in the box for at least 6 months or longer. Upon putting it back in service, the colors seem to be fine but the black won't work. A new Epson cartridge doesn't help. I am getting a little bit of gray but that part is better after it sits for 30 minutes or so. On repeated use, the gray fades away. Any ideas where to start? David
|
 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (3/14/03 4:15 PM) reply | + / - | If your printer has been out of service for 6 months the black "printhead assy/nozzle assy" is probably "clogged". Epsons need to be used at least once a month, or so to keep the ink in the printhead nozzles from drying out...QUESTION: Although you said you tried a new Epson cartridge, have you ran sets of "print head cleaning cycles" and nozzle tests" to try and get the printhead to open back up? Run one cleaning cycle, followed by one nozzle test and repeat the two tests about 5 to 10 times. If the nozzles don't open by the 10th set of tests ran, they usually won't. You will then have to try a different procedure [such as using a printhead cleaning kit]...REMEMBER: Always run a "nozzle test" after EACH "printhead cleaning cycle". An Epson needs the nozzle test as a "point of reference". Without this "point of reference" [on most models] it may only run a partial cleaning test, or sometimes no actual cleaning being completed at all...Good Luck! Denny Conway
|
 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by David G (3/14/03 11:16 PM) reply | + / - | Denny, I have run the nozzle test and cleaning cycle several times. I have ordered the cleaning kit for Epson printers from this website. Basicly a bottle of something to drip down the ink nozzle as I understand it. My son called around today and found a place that repairs printers. That technician suggested alcohol and a Q-tip on the nozzle. I hope this stuff I ordered is something more than rubbing alcohol. David
|
 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (3/17/03 9:09 AM) reply | + / - | Unless the fluids [kit] you ordered have directions that tell you how to use a syringe to SLOWLY and CAREFULLY inject the "cleaning solution" directly into the "printhead nozzle assemblies", it may not work that well always. Just cleaning the outside of the nozzles does not usually open them up on the insides where the "clogs" normally are...If you want in-depth information on my "printhead nozzle" cleaning methods, let me know and I'll post them for you. Be warned though, this information is step-by-step and long and detailed. Its mainly for people who don't always know that much about printer servicing and cleaning, but can help...Good Luck! | Epson Stylus C80 by David G (3/21/03 10:37 PM) reply | + / - | Denny, I ordered the solution from the site here and did the first step as described although I never saw a sponge to soak, there was a shallow well of some sort. I filled the well and shut the printer off overnight to let it soak. It seems to have worked as it is printing perfectly now that we ran it though 3 cleaning cycles. Got another problem however. My son tells me this printer has always had a tendency to feed one to two sheets though the printer before printing certain documents. Since I'm not using it, I don't know it there is any pattern to this or not. Any thoughts on what causes this? One more thing, how accurate are the ink level monitors that pop-up on screen while it is printing? David
|
 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (3/24/03 9:47 AM) reply | + / - | DAVID: The "C80's" ink cartridge monitoring system is better than the older models of Epson Printers, as the cartridge actually has an "electrical chip" on the ink cartridge. The CHIP is supposed to give a better indication of how much ink is left in the cartridge. With individual ink cartridges for each color, you can just replace ONE COLOR when it rus out. Prior to that most Epsons used a "Color Ink Cartridge" with three colors [or more] inside one cartridge. If you used up only one color, you still had to replace the entire color cartridge, even if the other colors inside that cartridge were almost full. Also on the older models, this monitoring was done with an internal ink counter on the "main board", which did an approximate paper count to the ratio of ink used [educated quess]. I've not heard or read any reports of problems with the CHIP method, so I'm ASSUMING no news is good news. REMEMBER: All Epson ink cartridges have to have some ink left in them, even when they think they are empty. If they ran completely out of ink, air would get into the "printhead nozzles" causing them to DRY OUT and CLOG...AS TO YOUR POSSIBLE PAPER FEEDING PROBLEM: No way for me to actually know, of course, but if the PROBLEM seems to only happen when you print certain documents, then I would think its more of a SOFTWARE PROBLEM [possible software settings]. If the problem happens randomly, then its either a problem with the paper your using [try a different type paper; use 20 lb weight, photo copier type paper], STATIC ELECTRICITY [fan the paper often], or a problem in your printers "paper feed assembly" [rare to only happen on certain documents]. I'm not aware of any particular problems with the "C80's" paper feed assembly, so I would lean towards SOFTWARE or actual PAPER problems...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Curt (4/1/03 11:02 PM) reply | + / - | In one of your statements above you mentioned that if wanted you could post a procedure for "Indepth Cleaning and Servicing of the print head for the Epson Stylus C80 printer. How can I get a copy of this? In the meantime, I will order the cleaning solution kit. Thanx Curt
|
 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (4/2/03 11:32 AM) reply | +3 + / - | CURT: The "In-Depth Cleaning and Servicing" is only GENERAL INFORMATION that can be applied to most of the Epson Inkjet Style Printers and is not for just the "C80" model. I will post it for you, in the hopes that it can help you with your problem...ONE WAY TO TEST FOR A POSSIBLE BAD OR CLOGGED PRINTHEAD: YOUR PROBLEM IS USUALLY THAT NO INK IS GETTING ONTO YOUR PAPER, EVEN AFTER REPLACING THE INK CARTRIDGE: Remove the ink cartridge and cover the cartridges holes/openings on the bottom, with scotch tape. This way the cartridge is less likely to leak, or even dry out... FIRST THING TO REMEMBER IS THAT MOST INKS ARE WATER SOLUABLE [Most of the ink residue thats inside the nozzles, that you will be cleaning out LATER, will dissolve by using just water, but hot water is even better]... I use flat coffee filters, cut into strips approx 3/4 to 1 inch wide [length depends on the brand of filters used, but usually ends up being 3 to 5 inches long]. You will want the "printhead/print cartridge holder assy" to be unlocked, so that you can manually move it back and forth by hand. I will position the assy in the middle of the carriage assy. Using the paper thickness lever [lever with "+" on one end and a "-" on the other end], I will put the lever on the "+" side. This rotates the printhead assy further away from where the paper would pass while the printheads are moving back-n-forth during the printing cycle... The "+" is actually for thicker paper such as photo quality and the "-" is for normal photo copier type paper [20lb weight]...You take around 5 to 7 strips of coffee filters, piled/stacked neatly on top of each other. The strips will absorb the hot water like a sponge, that your going to be applying with the "Syringe" [LATER]. You then place the stack of filter strips on top of the black plastic plate that runs just under the print head assy, during the printing cycle. You then manually slide the printhead assy over the stack of filter strips: if you use too many strips, it will be hard to get the assy over the strips and its not necessary to have a tight fit during this procedure. Be sure the lever is set on "+" so that you have extra room and leave the assy in approx the middle of the strips. Once the strips are in place you are ready to proceed... You will [LATER] be able to see ink and water get onto the strips, if the printhead is not clogged... You will now need a small "Syringe". Its best to get a small syringe that just slides over the "STEM" [PLASTIC PROTRUSION] that pokes the hole in the bottom of an ink cartridge when you install it. You can usually buy them at "FEED & GRAIN" type stores, where you buy bulk pet foods. Syringes are used to give animals their medications. As they come in many sizes, besure to get a small one. If the one you have is too big, you can usually slip some plastic tubing over the end of the syringe to make it smaller... With the "print cartridge holder assy" positioned over the strips of coffee filters, and your syringe available, you are ready for the next step... Now boil a cup of distilled water in your microwave [or heat it up the old fashioned way]. REMEMBER: Distilled water is best to use because it has less chemicals in it. Place the tip of the syringe into the hot water and fill up the tube. Place the tube over the "Plastic Stem" inside the cartridge holder assy, BUT DO NOT USE THE WATER YET...REMEMBER THAT IT NEEDS TO BE A TIGHT FIT, OR THE WATER CAN'T BE USED PROPERLY IN THE NEXT STEP. THE WATER WILL JUST RUN OUT INTO THE HOLDER AREA, IF NOT A TIGHT FIT... "VERY IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER": !!!THE "PRINTHEAD NOZZLES" CAN BE EASILY DAMAGED!!!... Now you VERY SLOWLY and VERY CAREFULLY, LITELY PRESS DOWN on the syringes plunger assy. IF THE PRINTHEAD NOZZLES ARE OPEN: The plunger should start to slowly depress as the water is [HOPEFULLY] flowing thru the nozzles...If water is flowing and you can see the plunger slowly going down, continue the litely applied pressure on the plunger untill all the water empties out of the syringe. Now you can remove the syringe and move the "print cartridge holder assy" off the strips of coffee filters. You should be able to see some ink on the now wet strips. This normally indicates that the "printhead assy" is open and that ink should be able to flow thru it normally. Its possible some nozzles might not be fully open, but does indicate that some fluids can successfully flow thru the nozzles. YOU CAN USE MORE HOT WATER AND REFLUSH THE SAME NOZZLES SEVERAL MORE TIMES. THIS WILL POSSIBLY FLUSH OUT ANY OLD INK THAT MIGHT CAUSE SOME NOZZLES NOT TO BE OPEN. YOU ARE JUST CLEANING OUT THE INSIDES OF YOUR NOZZLES AND IF DONE "SLOWLY" AND "CAREFULLY", SHOULD NOT CAUSE ANY PROBLEMS...If water flows thru the nozzles, then so should YOUR INK inside YOUR CARTRIDGE. If your ink does not flow, then either your "printhead assy" is BAD, or something else is wrong [examples: a defective "CLEANING STATION ASSY", a bad "MAIN PCB BOARD", some other defective/damaged "ELECTRICAL" part, bad cartridge]... If the plunger DOES NOT DEPRESS while you are litely pressing on it, your nozzles are probably clogged...You can let the hot water in the syringe [hopefully a little bit of hot water got into the nozzles also] just set for a couple of hours of soaking. If you are lucky, the water will dissolve the clog. Sometimes I will reheat the water several times and keep trying to get the nozzles to open, or just keep letting the hot water soak in the nozzles. What have you got to loose trying...If not successfull, you may have to purchase some "Epson Printhead/Nozzle Cleaning Solution" [if you can find it], or try some other type of printhead cleaning solution, to try and open up the nozzles. If you still can't get the nozzles open, then you would have to buy a new "printhead assy"...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by curt (4/3/03 3:42 PM) reply | + / - | Hi Denny! I did as per your instructions and tested each protuding nipple and everything seems clear however, after reinstalling the ink cartridges, I can see that the pump works because evrthing gets wet. What I don't understand is that when the paper comes through, it seems thast the printhead doesn't even touch the paper. There is about a 1/4" or 3/8" space from the printhead to the paper. Is there supposed to be a space there. Everything works fine. except that it doesn't reach the paper but goes through the motions of printing. Even the diagnostic test where you hold down the paper feed and then push the power button until it starts to blink and then let go, and it's supposed to print but nothing prints. Is there somekind of adjustment? This is the C80

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (4/4/03 12:22 PM) reply | + / - | CURT: You are right, in that the printhead does not and SHOULD NOT touch the paper. If it did touch, it would just SMEAR the ink on the paper...I'm assuming you used my last method and actually placed srips of coffee filters under the printhead assemblies and used a syringe to manually inject water thru the nozzles and onto the strips. If you did and could see the ink and water combination flow onto the strips, that indicates that normally the printhead assemblies are not clogged and are actually open...In that case your problem MAY BE a HARDWARE PROBLEM [part failure], but there's no way for me to really know, because: YOU DID NOT ACTUALLY OPEN/POST A SEPERATE QUESTION/PROBLEM AND JUST TAGGED YOUR QUESTION ON TO "WILLAMS" ORIGIONAL POSTING. YOUR PRINTER MAY HAVE HAD A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PROBLEM THAN THE PRINTER MODEL YOU ATTACHED YOUR ORIGIONAL QUESTIONS TO. IT'S POSSIBLE NO ONE MAY ACTUALLY HELP YOU BECAUSE THEY DID NOT READ THE BOARD YOU ATTACHED YOUR PROBLEM TO, WERE NOT INTERESTED IN READING ALL THE REPLIES ON THAT MESSAGE BOARD, OR EVEN ASSUMED YOUR INFORMATION WAS SIMPLY A REPLY CONCERNING THE ORIGIONAL PROBLEM POSTED BY THE FIRST PERSON...SECONDLY: As an "Epson Authorized Dealer", I'm limited to how much help I'm legally allowed to give. I don't really know enough about your actual problem to even be able to help yet...Most of the problems people have are caused by something they did, or did not do and are not always the printers fault...TRY AND GIVE ME A LITTLE MORE INFORMATION TO GO ON AND LET ME KNOW THRU THIS "PRINTER REPAIR SITE", AS I DON'T ANSWER E-MAIL REQUESTS...QUESTIONS: Did this problem just suddenly start up, or did it start after a bad jam?...Have you had to FORCEFULLY yank out/pull out any bad jams recently?...Do you always FAN any knew paper that you put into your printer?...TECH NOTES: Paper is like a magnet for static electricity and any static in the air is attracted to the paper loaded in your printer. Even though you may have correctly FANNED the new paper you installed, it can still cause problems in feeding after several days. That paper can attract the static from the air and cause misfeeding, multiple-sheet feeding problems and even paper jams. Static in the air is especially bad on WINDY DAYS, during ELECTRICAL STORMS, when your printer sets next to other electrical equipment or even next to DOORS and WINDOWS that may be open, or opened often...I will help you further if I can...Good Luck! | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Kim (4/8/03 12:25 AM) reply | + / - | Denny, I would certainly appreciate your help! I'm using an Epson C80 (love it, btw). I've noticed that when printing a multiple page print job, I always seem to have an issue on page 3. Status lights indicate a paper jam, although there isn't one. (Note: I did have a bad paper jam a few weeks ago and honestly don't recall if I've tried to print anything more than one page at a time since then) Also, the printer seemed in need of a "print head alignment", during this process (I think it was about round three of fine tuning) I got a message saying that there was a communication error with the printer. I replaced the cable but still get the same results. While searching to remedy the mysterious paper jam that doesn't seem to really exist, I also notice what seems like a lot of random ink pooling under the path that the ink cartridges follow (on the opposite side of where they normally sit when idle). Any ideas? Thanks!!
|
 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (4/8/03 10:41 AM) reply | + / - | KIM: That build-up of ink on the far left end of the printer is normal. Thats one of the areas where the ink cartridges deposit excess ink after and during print cycles and during its cleaning process. Remember that most inks are water soluable and can easily be removed using slightly dampened Q-Tips, or even a damp rag... As far as your random paper jam indication, there's no way for me to know what it is, for sure. It's possible that you have a HARDWARE problem [bad part], or that your printer is just DIRTY. Its unusual for even a DIRTY feed roller to cause jams that you cannot actually SEE, or at least HEAR strange noises as the paper is slipping on the roller. Normally you would also get a flashing PAPER ERROR LIGHT if this was the problem. Sometimes MISFEEDING PROBLEMS can be corrected by changing brands of paper, refanning the paper in the paper tray/holder, or simply by turning your paper over. Remember, some brands of paper [usually really cheep paper] are only finished on one side and the other side will be real slick/slippery. Do you always FAN any new paper that you put into your printer? Paper is like a magnet for static electricity and any static in the air is attracted to the paper loaded in your printer. Even though you may have correctly FANNED the new paper you installed, it can still cause problems in feeding after several days. That paper can attract the static from the air and cause misfeeding, multiple-sheet feeding problems and even paper jams. Static in the air is especially bad on WINDY DAYS, during ELECTRICAL STORMS, when your printer sets next to other electrical equipment or even next to DOORS and WINDOWS that may be open, or opened often... As far as your possible COMMUNICATION ERRORS are concerned, its usually caused by: #1 A bad printer cable [old cable/poor quality cable: not bi-directional printer cable, or not IEEE-1284 rated cable. Inexpensive cables are not usually shielded enough and are not always bi-directional]. As you said you all ready replaced the printer cable, you have normally eliminated this problem...#2 Bad or corrupted printer drivers: printer drivers are usually available online from EPSON at no charge; remove/de-install your old printer drivers and then go online and download the newest drivers available for your printer. If you use your old CD that came with your printer, then your not getting the latest changes/updates available free from Epson or HP. TECH NOTE: I would suggest this step next as its free to do...#3 It's possible that the actual SOFTWARE you are using to do a print job from, may be causing problems [Word, Office, Excel, etc]. You can try using a different software to print from and see if your problem goes away. If it does, then you may need to have your software removed and reinstalled. It's possible that something may have corrupted it and is causing problems...#4 Its possible that internal settings on your PC may be not set correctly, but that would normally require a PC trained person to check your system and make changes [BIOS settings]...#5 Its also possible that a VIRUS can cause problems with printers, but I don't think thats your problem. Even if you have a virus protection program installed on your PC, it has to be updated regularly to protect against possible new, or modified virus'...#6 If new drivers [free] & a new good quality printer cable [fairly inexpensive], do not cure your problem, then its probably time to have your PC/System checked for possible problems. The other thing you can try is to actually connect your printer to a different PC/System, then load the correct DRIVERS and connect your printer cable and run some print jobs. If your printer, cable and drivers work ok on a different PC/System, then you pretty much know the problem is normally in your PC/System...TECH NOTE: I DON'T THINK THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM, OR EVEN APPLIES TO YOU AS YOUR PRINTER IS FAIRLY NEW, BUT I STILL WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW: Sometimes the Logic Board, built onto/into the printers "Main PCB/Board", just goes bad, but not very often. As a new PCB costs quite a bit, its better to put that money into a new printer, as the prices have come down so much in the last couple of years...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Kim (4/8/03 12:02 PM) reply | + / - | Denny, great minds think alike I suppose! I was installing the C80 drivers to my laptop when your reply came in. I got the best print quality that I've gotten in DAYS and then the paper jam error lights on page 8. (Also, I did print from an entirely different software program.) I also get errors when using the Epson Printer Utility. I can clean the print heads okay, but I can't seem to do a Print Head Alignment without getting a "General Error" message. I got a reply from Epson and they tell me to press and hold the "maintenance" button for 4 seconds?! This is supposed to tell me whether I need to: a) replace the black ink cartridge, b) replace the color cartridge, or c) take the printer for service. Would appreciate any info!!! thanks
|
 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (4/9/03 4:08 PM) reply | + / - | KIM: I'm sorry, but as far as your random jamming problem, there's nothing else I can really tell you. I would still guess its either the PAPER your using, STATIC problem, or a problem in your SOFTWARE. Remember that a software problem can also be actual SOFTWARE you are using to do a print job from. Such as: Word, Office, Excel, etc. Did you actually try using a different software to print from, to see if your problem went away?...The only other test would be to install your printer, printer cable and drivers on a different PC, such as a friends computer. If your printer works ok on a different PC, then you could assume its a problem on your PC/System. If your printer has the same jamming problem on a different PC, then it would indicate a problem with your printer...AS FAR AS THE INFORMATION YOU RECEIVED FROM EPSON, I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY WERE HAVING YOU TRY...You have three lights/LED's on your printer: ink out, paper out and power light. In a mormal "Ready Condition", the power light would bo ON SOLID and both the other two lights would be off. If thats the way your printers light pattern is then its on mormally. If ONLY the power light is flashing then it indicates that your printer is receiving DATA [print job] from your PC, or you are in the process of changing the ink cartridge, or you are doing a printhead cleaning cycle. If you can tell me what your light pattern is, I can normally tell you what that means, but I can't always tell you how to fix it. Let me know which lights are on solid and which lights are flashing, when you get your jam and when you get that GENERAL ERROR. If I can help you further I will try...Again, Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by John Ringler (4/9/03 4:49 PM) reply | + / - | Hi, I have a Epson C80 that I purchased about 6 months ago. I recently ran out of black ink so I bought a generic black cartridge from eforcity.com When I installed the cartridge I had a message telling me that this is not an Epson cartridge and I shouldn't use it but the instructions coming with the generic product tell that it is fine. This is the problem that I have: everytime I want to print a document, the print is very bad, there are different shades and it is kinda blur. So what I need to do is that I clean the head (with the Epson utility software) about 1 or 2 times and then the print is fianlly pretty fine. But I have heard that cleaning the heads consume ink, and also it is very unconvenient to have to clean the head first everytime I want to print on elittle sheet. Do you know how I can fix this problem? Is this due to the generic cartridge itself or just to the way I installed it? Thanks a lot!!

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (4/9/03 5:24 PM) reply | + / - | JOHN: Basically you get what you pay for. The cartridge was cheeper, because the ink was cheeper. No matter what anyone says, all blacks, or colors are not the same. Thats why all companies patient the formulas for there inks. Epson has several different formulas for their black ink, depending on which printer the ink is for. Remember its not always the printers fault, when you get a leak, the waste ink pads fill up to soon, the print heads clog up, your copy quality starts to fail, you start going thru too much ink, or there are ink spots/drops/lines on your copies...YOU DID SAVE MONEY BUYING THOSE CHEEPER CARTRIDGES, SO THAT IS SOME CONSOLATION...Some people swear by GENERIC, THIRD PARTY ink cartridges and would not buy a new cartridge. Like most people, you just have to take your chances...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by John T. (4/10/03 7:14 AM) reply | + / - | Denny, Pretty impressive responses here!
I need some advice. I have a C80, seems to have a mechanical problem with the loading of paper. Printer has only been used for a couple hundred sheets in a year 1/2.
Problem: When it tries to feed the paper, it starts to pull in down, but the middle-right of the paper gets blocked by a black piece about 3/4 inch wide. The paper is then pulled from the sides, but blocked by the middle then doesn't load. It tries again, but no avail. It even wrinkles/crimps the paper where it is being blocked. :( I just bought a new cartridge too :(
Any direction for me?
Thank you,
John

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Kim (4/10/03 7:47 AM) reply | + / - | Denny, just wanted to share the latest with you on my C80. By the way, when I had emailed Epson, the "ink out" light was a solid light, "paper out" light was blinking and the power light was blinking. I got another response from them that the "maintenance" button is otherwise known as the "paper feed" button. Anyway, pressing any combination of buttons did nothing. I think I scared the printer into submission...just as suddenly as it started acting up, it's printing perfectly again....great print quality, no paper jams. Who knows, maybe by fidgeting with paper so much I finally released the static?! Thanks so much for all of your help!!

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (4/10/03 10:31 AM) reply | + / - | JOHN T: FIRST: YOU NEED TO POST YOUR PROBLEM SEPERATLY ON AN INDIVIDUAL MESSAGE BOARD. There may be several different people adding their problems onto the first persons origional message posting. Trying to keep them all separate is a pain and wastes valuable time. Especially when you need to refer back and search thru several different postings to reread or recheck on the information concerning the person you are now trying to help. Your printer may have even had a totally different problem than the printer model you attached your questions and problems to, or even be a totally different model. It's possible no one may actually help you because they did not read the board you attached your problem to. Sometimes we may not have the time, or even be interested in reading all the replies on a long message board. Other times we may just assume that your information was just a reply to that origional posting by the first person on that board...SECONDLY: As an "Epson Authorized Dealer", I'm limited to how much help I'm legally allowed to give...Open your own individual message board, listing your problem in as much detail as possible. Your chances of having someone help you, including me, will normally be better. | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by George (4/10/03 10:45 AM) reply | + / - | I have a C80. Started losing colors, black especially. Tried cleaning and even went ahead with a new cartrige to no avail. Found the fixyourownprinter.com site and ordered the kit. Now it's here and before I even tried it I have a problem. The directions say there are sponge pads on the left side of the parking station. Here's my oops; no sponge pads. None, nada, zip. Does this mean off to the repair shop cause if so the cost won't be worth the printer and I might as well toss it. Thanks

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Patricl (4/10/03 2:57 PM) reply | + / - | my epson C80 is giving lots of trouble. It only prints the first part of the first page, then it spits out that page and continues to feed through all the paper thats in the tray. I have installed update driver as well as reinstalled everything from the begining. I am using a IEEE printer cable also. i can't seem to figure out what the problem is. Any ideas? thanks
|
 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (4/11/03 9:44 AM) reply | + / - | PATRICL: You need to read the reply to "JOHN T.", listed three replies above your posting. It applies to you as well, on opening a seperate new message for your new problem and questions. You may have better luck getting help on your problem...AS TO YOUR PROBLEM: You most likely have a VIRUS on your computer. A virus shows up on an attached printer, as one of its most commonly caused problems that people first notice. Especially when all the paper just continues to run out, until there's no paper left in the tray. A virus is the only thing that I know of, that will cause that to happen...QUESTION: Do the sheets of paper that run thru the printer have any strange SYMBOLS, MARKINGS, or CHARACTERS on them? Even one small dot or character at the top left corner of the page. If so, then its possible that you are getting a COMMUNICATION ERROR. When a printer prints "jibberish", or has communication errors/problems, its usually caused by: #1 Bad printer cable, #2 Bad printer drivers, #3 Bad SOFTWARE you are using to do a print job from[Word, Office, Excel, etc], #4 Internal computer settings may be not set correctly, #5 A VIRUS can cause many strange problems with printers, or #6 Bad "Logic Board", on the printers "Main PCB/Board"...TRY RUNNING YOUR EPSON PRINTER AS A "STAND ALONE PRINTER", NOT CONNECTED TO A PC: Unhook the "printer cable" from the back of the printer and just run the internal "Epson Delf-Test Copy". If that copy prints out ok, then it would indicate you printer is normally fuctioning correctly. You would then know your problem is most likely coming from your PC...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Jenny (4/14/03 9:44 AM) reply | + / - | I have had my C80 for about 13 months, of course. Have had this problem once before that I remember, but cleared it up and didn't think much more about it (thought it was ink cartridge problem). Anyway, the printer had a "general error" last night and told me to turn it off and back on. Did that, was making funny noises but nothing else. This morning I discovered MAJOR black ink puddled up over to the left hand side, same place as last time. Still prints but makes major loud clicking noises like it is stripping a gear and there is evidence of ink on shiny roller, wide white band that follows cartridges, etc. Any home remedies or things to easily check? Thanks.

Sometimes we may just assume that your information was just a reply to that origional posting by the first person on that board and not even read your message. Also, as an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much INFORMATION and HELP that I can legally give...NOW AS TO YOUR QUESTIONS AND POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: The ink build-up on the inner left side is fairly common on the Epson C80 Printer. It can be worse if you use non Epson inks [generic or third party inks] and when you have possible mechanical problems caused by the printers "Carriage Assembly" being DIRTY or Dry. Remember that most inks are water soluable and can be cleaned off with water on a rag [damp, not dripping], or even damp Q-TIPS. No way for me to actually know what your problem is. The "Carriage Assembly" is the most common place that causes strange GRINDING NOISES or RATCHETING NOISES. The "Encoder Strip/Sensor Strip" can also be causing you possible problems with ink placement during the printers normal printing and cleaning routines. That strip will not normally cause any noise problems though...I will e-mail you a couple of my in-depth cleaning methods that may help, or at least you can eliminate them as problem areas...Let me know thru this "printer repair site" how it went and if you need more help. I will help you if I can...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Bob (4/14/03 4:06 PM) reply | + / - | My C80 was printing fine. Then the next 2 prints looked lowsey. I decided to do a nozle check which came out as needing head cleaning. doing so only made it worse. I tried aligning the heads but that didn,t help. I continued nozle check and head cleaning several times, each time the pattern continued to get worse! At this point the printer barely printed at all. In desparation I found this sight. I tried using a syringe to flush the heads out as described on this sight. Nothing at all! I tried replacing all 4 cartriges. Now it prints totaly blank pages. I have always used Epson inks. This is about my 4th set of cartriges since I purchased the printer a year ago. Help!!

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (4/17/03 10:31 AM) reply | + / - | BOB: As an "Epson Authorized Dealer", I'm limited to how much help I'm legally allowed to give. Also I don't normally answer e-mail requests, as I prefer to give help, as I have the spare time and when I can, thru this "Printer Repair Site". There is no way for me to actually know what your problem is for sure...QUESTIONS: Did you opened up your "printer properties utility" and check the ink levels listed on your "Status Monitor"? Is there any strange GRINDING NOISES or RATCHETING NOISES while the printer is operating/ running? Are you getting any solid or flashing ERROR LIGHTS/LEDS coming on your printer? Are there any ERROR MESSAGES coming up on your PC's Monitor? If the cartridges show up as having ink in them, your printheads are not clogged and no error lights or messages, then you may actually have a HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem]. The only other thing I can think of that you can even try, is probably a long shot at best. If the ENCODER STRIP/SENSOR STRIP has a lot of ink on it, it could be reading the wrong information. This strip has tiny black encoder dots on it that gives positioning info and operating info to the "Printhead Assemblies" and the printers "Main Board PCB". I have seen ink build-up cause different problems because the SENSOR reads the ink spots as encoder dots. I find it hard to believe it would stop the ink from printing at all, but you can at least eliminate that possibility. I will send you cleaning info for that ENCODER STRIP thru your e-mail address...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Tony (4/25/03 9:55 AM) reply | + / - | I have owned my Epson C80 for about a year and a few months now. It worked fine for the first year. Recently I'm finding slight banding, smudging when printing black and white text. I replaced the cartridge which solved the problem briefly and then it started again 3/4 quarters into the new black cartridge. I have heard problems with leaking ink with these c80s, could this be the problem. I've tried cleaning the heads, aligning, all the built in cleaning for the printer with no luck. I also have tried all the possible solutions on the Epson site. Any suggestions on how else to fix the banding/smudging on b/w text printing?

I removed them and hope to be able to clean under the assembly notta didn't help well after putting it back together it say's I'm out of black ink witch is a crock I had 1/2 before I started and the levels seems to be lower on the other execpt the pne that I just replaced. So I'm assuming those 2 screws and bar are something important. Can you help? Is there a certain position it needs to be placed?

 | Epson Stylus C80 problem by Ken (5/11/03 9:05 PM) reply | + / - | Need help. My black cartridge was low on ink. I had my printer switched off for a few days while I waited on a new cartridge (none available in my country). When I switched on, the ink light remained on, the paper and power lights were flashing (printer still in this state). I followed the troubleshooting procedures but the carrige would not move and head cleaning could not be initiated either from the printer or through the software. The software returns an error message. I use genuine Epson ink.
Thanks, Ken

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 - "Me Too" and, while Denny's busy.... by Hank Roberts (5/16/03 7:40 AM) reply | + / - | My C80 slowly degraded as others described. I've read all Denny's posts, had done basically the same things on my own flushing out with distilled water -- but the printer went from missing lines, to a few gray lines, and then to absolutely nothing printing.
No grinding, all Epson ink, no stuck paper, no long inactive times.
It sounds fine, it tests fine, it does nothing.
There was a LOT of ink inside the printer case, and after I replaced all the cartridges I checked the ones that had indicated empty -- they actually still had a lot of ink in them, enough to drip slowly for over an hour when set in the sink and some water trickled over them.
I emailed "Jenny" asking for the info Denny was going to email her, on cleaning the sensor that might be fooled by ink spots -- if Denny was able to email it before his family emergency (and, Denny, good luck, been there myself, give your family ALL your attention, we'll suvive our little printer troubles).
--- All in all, what I find in the older Usenet groups says the Epson lasts about a year and a day and then gets thrown out, while the HP lasts about a year and a day then has to have parts replaced that cost as much as a new printer so gets thrown out. But I hate disposable technology and am passionate about finding ways to fix this stuff instead of junk it.
So, can we keep this C80 thread going and exchange what people have found out, expecially -- how to take the thing apart, to further clean it, if anyone knows. I can remove the top cover, see the innards, see how the flat white flex cable attaches to the movable head, but haven't taken anything apart yet.
I washed a great mess of ink out from the bottom of the case, and the little rectangular thing under the right side of the print head is still full of overflow ink; should that be replaced?
Arrrrgh. I figure considering all the costs including the four brand new cartridges I just put in hoping they'd fix it, it'd have been cheaper to have Kodak photo processing than this printer for what I've done with it. I won't buy another Epson if the C-80 can't be made to work.

SUCCESS!!! i got the ink back on the papers! why dont you guys try it out. it might work on your printers. good luck on the troubleshooting.

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Hank (5/20/03 7:31 AM) reply | + / - | I'm in Northern California (Berkeley). Denny, would you email me the info on what company you work for?
I've called my printer in to Epson, but haven't found the invoice yet -- it's probably a few weeks past a year, but I may have a credit card 'extended warranty' coverage on it.
I've done everything you have recommended to people, it's time to bring it to you and let you decide if it's landfill or a repair problem.
Maybe you can recycle some of the parts if it's junk, I hate throwing high technology devices into the landfill, as so often happens.
|
 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (5/20/03 3:27 PM) reply | + / - | Hank: If you purchased an "Extended Warranty" from the people or company that sold you your printer, then you have to return the printer to them for repairs or servicing. Normally that extended warranty was not sold thru Epson, but thru the company that sold the printer to you. Epson did not make any money off that extended warranty, so they will not honor another companies extended warranty. I see it often when someone buys the printer and extended warranty from Office Depot. Office Depot pockets the money, or maybe more fair to say, makes the additional money from selling the extended warranty, but does not actually sell an "EPSON AUTHORIZED EXTENDED WARRANTY CONTRACT". Epson did not make the money on the extended warranty, so they won't do the repairs...To be honest to you, if you don't have that extended warranty coverage, your better off just buying a new printer. Considering the amount of work you have already put in to trying to get your printer fixed, it will be to expensive to have it repaired. It will cost you more to send it to me, have me fix it and then send it back to you, than what you can buy a new printer for or maybe even two printers, as there are so may sales and low prices available now. I don't even repair donated printers, except a few older Epson S.C. 740's, with the MAC Serial Port. Those I only sell to old style Mac users who cannot upgrade their older system to USB. No company that I know of, produces small ink jet printers with serial ports any longer. I don't even save most dead ink jet printers because the printheads are what most people need and thats whats usually gone bad. Even if the printheads were still ok when the person donated it [say the mainboard went bad], the printheads would clog-up from non use real quickly and then not be of much good anyway...Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to try and repair your old "C80" if your willing to spend the money, thats my job. Its also my job to advise customers on the best course of action concerning their options. Unfortunatly very little actual recycling gets done, because it costs companies money to recycle old printers and related office equipment. I will e-mail you my companies name and address...Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (5/20/03 5:02 PM) reply | + / - | NICK: When the power light is flashing that usually indicates DATA TRANSMISSION is occuring from the PC to the printer. In your case it may not be good data, or that the data is not actually being transmitted correctly...TRY RUNNING THE PRINTER AS A "STAND ALONE PRINTER", NOT CONNECTED TO A PC: Unhook the "printer cable" from the back of the printer. The power cord would still be plugged in to the wall. With paper loaded normally, turn the printer off for 10 seconds, or so. This is done to clear out any remaining DATA/INFORMATION that may still have been in the printers system, from when the PC was previously connected. NOW THE PRINTER IS OFF, THE POWER CORD IS STILL PLUGGED INTO THE WALL OUTLET AND THERE IS PAPER LOADED NORMALLY. Use one finger to press-in and hold-in on the center "Paper Button" [the button with the picture of a piece of paper next to it]. While holding in on that button, reach over with a different finger and turn on the "Power Button/Switch", like you normally would. Don't hold-in on the power button, but continue to hold-in on the paper button. You will continue to hold-in on the paper button while the printer is initializing/turning on. In about 3 to 5 seconds you will normally hear and see the printer start to pull in a piece of paper. When you hear and see that happen, then release the paper button... IF EVERYTHING IS WORKING CORRECTLY IN THE PRINTERS "PAPER FEED ASSEMBLY", THEN AN "INTERNAL EPSON SELF-TEST COPY" SHOULD BE PRINTED OUT AND CORRECTLY FED THRU THE PRINTER... There will be a "nozzle test" on the page, plus a line of letters an numbers printed out above the nozzle test... AS A GENERAL RULE: If the self-test page prints out correctly, then usually your printer is working normally. This does not mean your printer may not be dirty, have some nozzles not open/printing, or have another service related problem. It just means the printer is basically working normally as far as the internal tests go...You could run this self-test several times [just be sure], but usually if it works once it will do the same again...Once you see the self-test is ok, you could just run 5 or 10 "paper path tests", to check the "paper feed assembly" better. In a "ready condition" [power on, paper loaded and no error lights on], just push-in on the "paper button" once. Paper will feed in part way and stop, as normal. Push on the "paper button" a second time and the paper will feed thru the printer into the paper exit tray, as normal. Do this test 5 or 10 times and if no problems, then you know your printers "paper feed assembly" is working normally...IF YOUR PRINTER IS WORKING OK, THEN YOUR PROBLEM WOULD NORMALLY BE IN YOUR PC: bad drivers, bad printer cable, bad software, incorrect settings, etc...Good Luck! | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Leszek (5/21/03 11:24 AM) reply | + / - | Hi Denny,
My Epson C80 does not print anymore. Here is the story. I bought a non-Epson black replacement cartridge, which caused my printer to print gray and with missing lines. After 4-5 pages the print was almost invisible. Then I replaced with an Epson black cartridge, which I could not get to print at all. The color prints were fine. 4 months later I ran across your website and used your way to clean the print head. I used a syringe applying rubbing alcohol and then Windex. Always I could see a large ink drop on a coffee filter underneath the print head. Since my colors stopped to print as well, I did the same for the color inks. Then I ran number of nozzle cleaning tests. The best I could get it was faint black lines, no color though. 2 days later I ma not having even those black lines. The cartridges seem still to have ink inside. Does the print head have one set of nozzles for all the colors or each color has a separate one? Where can I find a detail info how the print head is built? How can I disassemble (take out) the head for more thorough cleaning? I hope you can help me to solve this problem. Leszek

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (5/21/03 12:30 PM) reply | + / - | LESZEK: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer. You may and sounds like you actually do, have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem]. It won't do any good to remove the "printhead assembly" and that should not be done, as it will normally just cause additional problems. I have NEVER removed a printhead assembly for cleaning or servicing, normally just for replacement purposes, or experimentation. There is just one "printhead assembly" in the "C80" Printer and it is approximately $125 + shipping and handling from Epson. To my knowledge, there is no detailed info available on how the printhead assembly is built. That info would normally be classified, protected and patented by Epson and to my knowledge, not even released in a Service Manual. With a Service Manual you could at least read the instructions for disassembly and removal of that printhead assembly. When the printhead assembly goes bad, I don't recommend it be replaced, as you can buy a new ink jet printer cheeper. I'm sorry, but I can't be of much help to you...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 -- lines crooked, or missing by John van Vlaande (5/23/03 5:52 AM) reply | + / - | Hi, Great service you are providing here.
I left my C80 unused for six months and just got it running again. The colors seem fine but the lines are crooked in the self-test and sometimes lines seem missing from the color pictures.
In one case, one line at the bottom of the page is wavy and is double. I am assuming that there is an alignment problem.
Thanks in advance, John

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 -- lines crooked, Update by John van Vlaande (5/24/03 8:32 AM) reply | + / - | Hi again,
It prints text now w/ straight lines but the letters are faint on some lines. Oddly, when I print the same page again, it is faint in exactly in the same places. Pictures print but have white lines across them.
The printer test still produces a slanted box, not sure if that is normal or not.
What do you think ??

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (5/27/03 10:27 AM) reply | + / - | John: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer. You may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem], especially after your printer set unused for six months. Epson ink jet printers need to be used often or the "printhead nozzles" can clog up real easily and cannot always be successfully reopened. Normally on a "C80", if there are "white lines" or "void lines" thru the black or colors, that would indicate a clogged or failing printhead assembly. If you are not using Epson Ink Cartridges then the problems can even be worse. Double image or wavy image also normally indicate a clogged or failing printhead assembly, rather than an alignment problem. My guess is that some of your printhead nozzles are clogged and not firing and that is what is causing your printing problems. The "C80" uses a different system than the older style Epson Ink Jet Printers and the available "Cleaning Kits" are not recommended for the "C80" Printer. The Epson special RED PRINTHEAD CLEANING SOLUTION that is included in the kit and the syringe thats also included, can be used on the "C80" and it works better than hot water. The instructions won't make sense when its talking about the felt "cap assembly", because the "C80" uses a completely different "cap assembly" that does not even look like the old style felt pad. The "C80" just uses a rubber sealing mechanism that has a slot in it and no felt pad at all. I will e-mail you some general information that you can use as a guide, if you want to try to test or clean or possibly unclog you printhead nozzles...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Gord (6/7/03 8:02 AM) reply | + / - | A communication error is stopping the ink status being sent to my PC - the Epson site says this error has been caused by 1 of the cartridges running out - but now I don't know which one! I wish I had not turned off the error warnings, but they are so annoying. Any clues to which cartridge to change - to save me losing money by replacing them all? Thanks

There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer. It's possible that you may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [cartridge or parts problem]. If you have a communication error, you need to determine if its coming from your printer or your PC. I will e-mail you some general information on how to run your printer as a STAND ALONE PRINTER, in case you need it...I have no way of knowing which cartridge may possibly be causing a problem for you. If you have a low cartridge, the ink light would normally start flashing or if extremely low, would turn to a solid light. Other than your ink statis indicator and the ink lights, I don't know of any other way to check the cartridges...Good Luck! Denny Conway

JUST TO LET YOU KNOW: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer. It's possible that you may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem], or your printhead might just be clogged. Epsons need to be used often to keep the tiny printhead nozzles open. If you happen to be using refilled or non-Epson ink cartridges then its even worse on the printhead assemblies. You might want to try using the "printhead cleaning kit", available through the home page on "fixyourownprinter.com". Its around $10.00 and includes a syringe and the RED Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution, which is the best cleaning fluid to use, by far. This fluid is capable of disolving most clogs, especially if you use Epson inks. Although the kit does say its not for Epson C80 models, the red fluid and syringe is used the same way on the C80's, as the older Epson Ink Jet Printers. The difference is the instructions tell you how to clean the "cap assembly"/felt pad assembly and you have to ignore those instructions. The "C80" has a completely different system, with no felt pad, so the instructions can be confusing...If it does not work, then its generally time to replace the printhead or the printer...Good Luck! | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Anonymous (6/15/03 7:13 PM) reply | + / - | Denny, I have an Epson C80 printer that has accumulated quite a bit of ink in the overflow reservoir - so much that it was smearing the side of the paper when I printed. I removed the top cover and printer shell (which also had a lot of ink on the inside) and cleaned out the reservoir and metal plate just below the paper path. When I put the printer back together and turned it on, the ink replacement light stayed on (all 4 of the cartridges were at least half full when I started); and when I tried to print, the status monitor reported that installed ink cartridges cannot be recognized. These are Epson ink cartridges (all I've ever used) and I am printing every day. I certainly don't think this is a cartridge problem. Does something need reset? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Bob

There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer. It's possible that you may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem], but it sounds like you may have caused some type of problem when you disassembled and cleaned and serviced your printer. Possibly something electrical came unplugged or a loose connection occured. If only your ink light/LED is staying on, then its doubtfull that there's anything that needs reset. If you have extra cartridges, then I would suggest swapping them as a test. Its probably not worth buying new cartridges just for testing purposes, but if you already have new cartridges, then you have nothing to loose trying them. If new cartridges do not change your problem, then I really can't help you, because I don't have any idea what went wrong when you serviced your printer. New printers are so inexpensive that I seldom do any in-depth repairs and disassembly on the "C80" printers for customers...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by sara (6/16/03 3:34 PM) reply | + / - | I have tried everything.. My printer first began giving me a false out of paper light, I un-installed and re-installed new drivers, however I also am having difficulties with the sheet feeder, by the indicator lights it seems that there is a carriage error, however there is not any paper jammed in the feeder? Help.

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (6/16/03 5:55 PM) reply | + / - | Sara: As an "Epson Authorized Dealor", I'm limited to how much help I'm legally allowed to give...I would recommend that you try running your printer as a "STAND ALONE PRINTER", not connected to a PC/System: Unhook the "printer cable" from the back of the printer. The power cord would still be plugged in to the wall. With paper loaded normally, turn the printer off for 10 seconds, or so. This is done to clear out any remaining DATA or INFORMATION that may still have been in the printers system, from when the PC was previously connected. Now reach over and turn the printer on as normal. The printer should come on and go to a normal READY CONDITION, with no ERROR LIGHTS on. If you get an ERROR LIGHT on, then you know you have a problem in your printer. If there are no ERROR LIGHTS on, then reach over and turn the printer off again. Now hold-in on the "Paper Button" [the button with the picture of a piece of paper next to it] and reach over and turn the power button on, as normal. Continue to hold in on the paper button for about 3 to 5 seconds, but release the power button after turning your printer on. Release the paper button once you can hear and see the printer starting to initialize and start to pull-in a piece of paper. The printer will print out an "Internal Epson Self-Test Copy". If everything is working correctly in the printers "PAPER FEED ASSEMBLY" and "CARRIAGE/CARTRIDGE ASSEMBLY", the self-test copy should be printed out and correctly fed thru the printer, with no problems or unusual noises...AS A GENERAL RULE: If the self-test page prints out correctly, then usually your printer is working normally. This does not mean your printer may not be dirty, or have another service related problem, or even bad cartridges. It just means the printer is basically working normally as far as the internal tests go. You could run this self-test several times [just be sure], but usually if it works once it will do the same again. If your printer is working ok, then your problem could be in your PC: bad drivers, bad printer cable, bad software, etc. I'm sorry, but I don't work on PC's, so I can't help you with those type problems. You may need to get help from a PC Tech if you determine your problem may be in your PC/System. If the self-test does not print out normally, then you can assume the problem is in your printer. Let me know how the stand alone test went and if I can help you further, I will try...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by sara (6/17/03 3:18 AM) reply | + / - | Thanks Denny forthe info.. The stand Alone test did not work. I followed the steps listed above however the paper fed through incorrectly and wrinkled causing the ink light to remain solid and the other two to flash. I pulled out the paper from the front however after that I was not able to get any other paper to feed through until I actually shut off the printer for a few min and then turned it back on but the same thing keeps happening.. I have been trying to fix this now for several days and I am getting really frustrated. Thanks

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (6/17/03 9:52 AM) reply | + / - | Sara...FIRST GUESS: Its possible that a foreign object may have fallen into the paper feed area and the paper is running into it as it tries to feed in. Sometimes pens, pencils, push pins, paper clips, candy, etc, will fall inside the opening and cause the paper to feed in crooked and jam. Use a flashlight and look into that opening very closely for possible foreign objects. If you don't see anything, then pick your printer up and turn it over so that opening is upside down. Shake your printer to see if anything falls out. If not then set it down in its normal position and use the flashlight again and look for a foreign object that may have moved over into view when you shook the printer. That's the best you can do without removing the top cover and major disassembly of the paper feed assembly. Generally, you would probably need a Service Manual for that type of in-depth disassembly...SECOND GUESS: Have you recently had to remove any bad jams, by yanking the paper out backwards, to the rear of the printer? If so, then its possible that damage was done to the paper jam sensor assembly, or the plastic arm assembly may have been pulled off its mounts. If so, then your printer would see a constant jam, even though there was no actual paper in the printer. Again, this would require removing the top cover and major disassembly for in-depth servicing and troubleshooting...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (6/17/03 12:21 PM) reply | + / - | PLEASE!!! PLEASE!!! Any knew problems on Epson Printers, especially on the "C80" model, start your own NEW POSTING, on a new message board, rather than tack your problem onto someone else's message board...IT'S EASY: Just go to the "fixyourownprinter.com" web-site and under MESSAGE BOARD, click-on PRINTER REPAIR FORUM. The first page will open up; scroll down to bottom of the page; in the bottom left corner is "click here to post a new message". Now you can post your printers problem...When you get to many different problems posted on the first person's board, its hard to follow and hard to keep scrolling back to find a particular problem. It's possible no one may actually help you because they did not read the board you attached your problem to. Sometimes we may just assume that your information was just a reply to that origional posting by the first person on that board and not even read your message. REMEMBER: The best chance for help is when you open your own individual message board, listing your problem in as much detail as possible. Your chances of having someone help you, including me if I have the time, will normally be better...Thank You! Denny Conway

Can someone tell me how to fix it?

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by moses (9/4/03 8:23 PM) reply | + / - | The ink monitoring program is giving me some trouble. All the ink levels are registering lower than they actually are. I practically brand new T0321 reads half full. The remaining cartridges are reading low as well. There is plenty of ink in these cartridges. I have gone through a few cartridges and they are usually pretty empty when the monitor reads low. Is there a way to fix this problem?

 | Epson Stylus C80 - Printer Cartridge by Stephanie (9/10/03 5:37 PM) reply | + / - | I purchased my Epson Stylus C80 about a year ago, and have been using ink cartridges purchased through eforcity as replacements. I realize now that I was getting cheap cartridges for a cheap price, and will not re-do it. However, my ink out light keeps telling me my black ink catridge is out of ink. I have put a new Epson one in there, but it will not recognize it. What can I do?
|
 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (9/11/03 10:11 AM) reply | + / - | Stephanie: Unfortunatly, there's no way for me to really know whats wrong...QUESTION: Are there any other LIGHTS/LED's on solid or blinking? If so then your printer could be indicating a different Service Error Condition [problem]...Your printer basically reads the amount of ink in a cartridge thru an "electrical chip" mounted on the outside of the cartridge. Sometimes when people refill their own ink cartridges, or even when they they but refilled cartridges, those chips still are marked as empty. Some refillers try to reset the chips, but it does not always work. Its always possible that you have a bad cartridge, or even that the electrical contacts inside the printer are dirty and causing problems. You can carefully clean the area where the electrical contacts on the CHIP mounted on the ink cartridge, touch the electrical contacts inside the printer. Sometimes ink residue will get on those contacts and act like electrical tape, stopping the electricity was flowing correctly. You can use a Q-Tip slightly dampened with water to clean off the contact area and a second new Q-Tip to dry off the contacts after wiping them off...VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure your printer is first turned off and unplugged prior to cleaning. Also be sure that the contact area dries before testing, as water and electricity do not mix...Good Luck! Denny Conway

I don't think it is a bad ink catridge, because I just bought a new Epson ink catridge, and it still doesn't recognize it. I am thinking it must be something on the printer. I will try cleaning it, and let you know how it goes. If you have any other thoughts, please let me know. Thanks, Stephanie

 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (9/11/03 11:55 AM) reply | + / - | JUST A THOUGHT: If no one seems to help you, you might want to open your own seperate message board, rather than tack your printers problem onto a message board that is over 6 months old. There is already over 85 postings on just this one board. Sometimes when a board gets too long and has too many different messages on it, we might not have the time to actually read them all. Sometimes it just takes too much time to scroll thru all the messages trying to see if there's someone that we might be able to help. Sometimes we might just assume you may be replying to someone elses posted problem, rather that actually posting your own separate problem...At any rate, its easy to post your own separate message. All you have to do is go to the "fixyourownprinter.com" web-site and click-on "Printer Repair Forum", under MESSAGE BOARDS. When the page opens, scroll to the bottom left corner where it says, "click here to post a message". Click-on the underlined blue "here" and then post your own separate message. You might have a better chance that more people will read just your separate message and maybe even get quicker help. At the very least, your message is not bundled with over 85 other messages and replies, where it may not even be seen...Denny Conway...P.S. JUST SO YOU WILL KNOW: Stephanie received help because she did post the same message separatly on 9/11 on an individual message board where I happened to have the time to read it and replied back to her. Of course that does not mean that everyone can be helped by me personally, but your chances for help, may be increased by posting your own individual and separate message board.

 | Re: Epson Stylus C60 by Mash (9/29/03 1:20 PM) reply | + / - | Help on a C60 Printer. I switch it on and all I get is a Green and Red light constantly on. Changed carts but to no avail. Any thoughts ?
|
 | Re: Epson Stylus C80 by Denny Conway (9/29/03 3:41 PM) reply | + / - | Mash: Usually, three things cause the Service Error Condition where both LIGHTS/LED's are on solid at the same time...#1: Paper Out Condition, #2: Paper Jam Condition, #3: No ink cartridge installed or bad ink cartridge installed. As you said that you already "changed carts but to no avail", then I think we can eliminate #3. Usually we can eliminate #1, because you would normally know if your paper was out. A "Paper Jam Error" can occur because of a HARDWARE ERROR/PARTS PROBLEM and usually its then a bad or failing electrical part. It can also occur when an actual foreign object [paperclip, pencil, pen], or an actual piece of paper, or even a small torn piece of paper, gets stuck inside a "Paper Jam Sensor". Its even possible that you may of had a really bad paper jam and had to forcefully yank it or pull it out of your printer. Damage can happen if paper is forcefully removed in a backwards direction, towards the rear of the printer. Sometimes the plastic arm on the paper sensor assembly is damaged or dislodged when a bad paper jam is removed. The small plastic arm swings out as paper pushes it up and back into the paper sensor as paper passes through. If the arm is broken, or dislodged, the sensor assumes there is a paper jam and then that "Paper Jam Error Condition" comes on. I'm sorry, but no way for me to really know whats wrong with your printer. Those printers were so inexpensive to start with, that no one wants to have them repaired. I have never even opened up a "C60" for troubleshooting purposes...Good Luck! Denny Conway

It's possible that you may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem], or possibly even a problem with your ink cartridges themselves. Generally if you are using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges [Third Party, Generic, or Refilled Cartridges] you are using the wrong ink for your printer and sooner or later you will normally have some type of problems, almost everyone does. No matter what anyone says, all blacks and colors are not the same. Thats why all companies patient the formulas for there inks...If you do a GENERAL SEARCH on "C80" Printers, on the " fixyourownprinter.com " Printer Repair Site, you can read about problems that other people have ran into, especially when they use Non-Epson Ink Cartridges.
