 | HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Dean (1/27/03 12:47 PM) reply | + / - | Hi,
I have a 13 month old HP Photosmart 1115 printer that will not print because the print cartridges holder is stuck to the right. When starting up it makes an awful grinding noise and then I get a paper jam/ cartridges stuck to the right error. I have tried some of the resetting solutions on the HP website as well as cleaning of the clear strip that runs across the back. It still wont work. Any advice will be greatly appreciated

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Brad (4/3/03 5:09 AM) reply | + / - | I have the same type of problem with my photosmart 1215. On my printer the print cartridge is NOT stuck, the printer is just reporting is as being stuck and I cannot find a way to reset it. HP Tech support tells me I need to take my printer in for repair, but I think there should be someway to fix it myself. Any ideas?

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Bert (9/25/03 11:32 PM) reply | + / - | If the paper queues up properly and you get a partial printed page, then there may be too much friction in the carriage shaft. Try lubricating the shaft with a few drops of Tri-Flow (available at cycle shops, get the 2 oz. squeeze bottle). The jury is still out but the lubricating felts (P/N C6409-80003) on the carriage don’t seem robust enough to me. They get clogged with ink overspray picked up from the shaft. If lubrication solves the problem I suggest replacing them.
If the paper is not being picked up then there is one of three problems: the paper feed rollers cannot pick up paper, the paper is not being lifted into the paper feed rollers, or the sliding paper tray is not inserted far enough.
If the feed rollers cannot pick up paper they need to be cleaned. Use water to clean them as a quick fix. Long term I suggest using rubber rejuvenator.
If the paper is not being lifted into the rollers remove the sliding paper tray. This is accomplished by sliding it out as far as possible and then pushing a button that is off center to the right. Look into the cavity where it was; you should see a hinged shiny metal strip approximately 1"x2" between the two feed rollers on the right. This metal strip lifts the paper into the rollers during paper feeding. It will be lying flat against the bottom unless printing was interrupted mid-cycle. If it is out place just reinsert it back into it's slots.
If the paper tray will not close far enough, the black spring-loaded latch under it on the left is not working correctly. The spring may be out of place. It can seen after the paper tray is removed. The spring has to be loaded CW against the latch at an angle exceeding 90 degrees. I examined one I just took apart for a few minutes in disbelief that there was such an extreme bend on the spring..

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Andy (10/18/03 4:58 AM) reply | + / - | My printer is showing "paper Jam" no mater how many times I re-set it. No paper in printer. The carrage won't slide to the middle when the door is opened. It does slided back and forth when I reset but then locks to the right. Getting very frustrated!!! Anybody figure out what to do with this situation (besides throwing it off a cliff)
|
 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Bert (10/18/03 10:12 PM) reply | + / - | Andy You didn't say what you did to initiate a reset but I suggest this.
1. Remove the cartridges and unplug the power. 2. Replug the power and allow it to reinitalize. 3. Reinstall the cartridges and it may come back to life.
Shooting from the hip: Are both of your cartridges good and have you cleaned the cartridge and carriage contacts? When you power up, do the the rollers spin as if the printer is trying to eject a piece of paper from the mechanism? If so, the paper sensor may be stuck.
Please get back with yea or nay on what I've suggested. I may be able to offer other suggestions if it isn't fixed. Any other info you can give might be helpful. If the problem is solved others will benefit.

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Brandon (10/27/03 2:43 PM) reply | + / - | Same deal here, I just bought the thing 13 months ago and bam, 1 month after warranty.... Cartrige cradle is jammed, I took it back to the store I bought it from, $218.00 Canadian to fix it. I told them to shove it, I payed $199.00 Canadian for it. HP tech support, useless unless you wanna pay $35.00 for over the phone help. Anyone wanna patition them??

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by andy (10/27/03 7:32 PM) reply | + / - | Bert- I tried your suggestions but nothing works! I also noticed that when I open the cover, the ink cartridges do not move to the middle. When I do a hard reset, the carrage moves from side to side then stops either to the far left or far right. When I push the reset button on the face of the printer, the rear rollers roll forward about 1/8" and then back 1/8" and stops. Then goes back into paper jam mode. Thanks for getting back to me though.. Any other suggestions? -Andy

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Bert (10/27/03 11:32 PM) reply | + / - | Andy You mentioned doing a hard reset. HP describes a hard mechanical reset. Before throwing if off of a cliff, give it one more chance and try a mechanical reset if you have not already. Please let us know how things turn out. We need to know if this carriage right malady is truly terminal.

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Andy (10/28/03 1:05 AM) reply | + / - | Bert - I did every reset I could find listed on HP's site... Still get the paper jam and carrage issue. The mechanical reset was one of them. No matter what I do it still goes into paper jam mode and the carrage locks to one side or the other. Sadly, I think it's time to shop for a new printer.

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Brandon (10/28/03 6:03 AM) reply | + / - | I am going to send this web link to HP Canada to challenge them to recall this Printer, apparently this is a big issue and they need to be responsible for it. I haven't even emptied the first set of Ink cartridges yet and conveniently, one month after the warranty expires, the thing is broke. Would anyone else like to contact the US side in the same manor?
|
 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Brandon (10/28/03 6:24 AM) reply | + / - | Below is a copy of the email sent to HP Canada, hopefully we can resolve this issue.
I have been purchasing HP products for about 7 years now, I started out with the purchase of an HP Pavilion system and a Printer. I went on to purchase a Photosmart Camera and I have continued to support HP from there. I have had positive results with HP up until my Photosmart 1115 printer support request. To make it short, I purchased the printer from Future Shop, they offered me a Future Shop extended warranty. I figured that it was not necessary as this printer was to replace my original (7 year old) HP printer that was still working. One month after warranty expiration, the printer Cartridges Jammed. Future Shop gave me the run around and HP Tech support said I was out of luck and that I would have to pay for support and repair. I could understand a cost if I felt it was justified but I have yet to empty the original cartridges. In other words, the printer is barely used. As far as the type of paper being used in the printer, it is HP paper. I am apparently not alone in this issue.
Please follow the link below for an idea on the Jammed Cartridge situation, I am not the only person with this issue and I am challenging HP to recall this printer. The repair cost is more the original sale value!! This seems to be an excellent opportunity for HP to stand behind their products.

I thank you for your time and I hope to hear your advice.

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Bert (1/8/05 5:41 PM) reply | + / - | Answering a few questions may help isolate the problem.
Under what circumstances did the carriage jam begin, e.g. was there a paper jam?
Are there any unusual noises?
Does the carriage move when the hinged cover is opened?
Can you move the carriage by hand when the power is turned off?

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Vancouver Mike (4/15/05 11:56 AM) reply | + / - | Obviously, Bert, you don't have one of these printers. My 1115 does this all the time. I have to push the cartridge carriage to the left, disconnect the printer, pick it up and shake it back and forth upside down. What a pain. But this was the solution from HP tech support! They know there is a problem, but don't seem to care. Buy a new printer? Maybe that is what they want. Yes, but not an HP.

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Teraforce (4/16/05 8:07 PM) reply | + / - | I'm surprised that no one has brought this suggestion up, but here is what I think: The ink supply station is gummed up with ink. Take the printer apart, clean out the ink supply station, and it all shoud be working fine after that.
|
 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by corrco (6/11/05 2:00 PM) reply | + / - | The problem, in at least some of these cases (most likely the ones with the grinding noise) is the tensioner arm, which is not keeping the cartridge holder belt taut enough to move the cartridge along properly. I need to get a shop manual somewhere (there isn't one here) to disassembe - then maybe I can see what broke inside.
|
 | Re: Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Bert (6/11/05 5:39 PM) reply | + / - | If the belt is loose, the spring that applies tension to the turnaround assembly will be missing. It is on the far right. The spring comes off because a tab on the turnaround assemble breaks off.
|
 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Stephen (edited 6/11/05 6:25 PM) reply | +1 + / - | When the turnaround assembly, (tensioner), breaks the printers I've worked on do not make a grinding noise, they just get a carriage blocked error.
The only printers I've seen the turnaround assembly break in are the DeskJet 940C's, I've never personally seen that part break in any other printer, and none that I've replaced have broken a second time. When I replace the turnaround assembly I always also replace the spring that puts tension on it, I've no way of determining if the piece failed due to too much spring tension, or if the plastic tab was just not strong enough.
Final note, the spring and the turnaround assembly sell for about 50 cents each, so replacing both doesn't add much cost to a repair.

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Dina (9/9/05 9:13 PM) reply | + / - | I am so glad I found this site. I called HP support and my warranty had already expired. I was told it would cost 30.00 - for technical support. I paid 300 dollars for this thing and all they want me to do upgrade for 107 dollars. I do not need a new printer! This is frustrating. So I am so glad I checked the internet and found this website. You mentioned they sell for about 50 cents each - where can I purchase this??

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Mike Suffern (12/16/05 6:03 AM) reply | + / - | WD40 spray it all over the cartride and the silver guide bar. It worked for me. It takes a number of test pages to clear any residual lubricant. Not only did I stop getting the error messages but the grinding noise is gone. It worked for me. Good Luck.
|
 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Stephen (12/18/05 10:32 AM) reply | + / - | No WD-40!!! (it attacks plastic, that means melts)
Do not use a spray!!! It will get other places and cause problems!!!
The grinding noise is usually the service station, and is probably the same as a DeskJet 970 service station, that problem is thoroughly documented in the forums.

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Anonymous (7/10/07 9:20 AM) reply | + / - | Hey all. I just had a similar problem (though it was a 7760 model). The cartridges would get stuck in the middle or so. With a little pressure I could manually move them back and forth, but the printer still wasn't happy.
I tried a hard reset and all that but it didn't help. Then I simply used a flashlight and shined it around inside. I discovered that a small metal piece visible from the front of the printer (with the cover open) was bent awkwardly right around where the cartridges were getting stuck. I manually bent it back in place and everything worked.
So hopefully this helps anyone else who might be experiencing a similar problem.

 | Re: Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Caroline4 (8/29/07 9:27 AM) reply | + / - | I also have an HP Photosmart 1115 printer that does not feed paper. I have just about taken the entire printer apart trying to get to the 1x2 metal tab. The metal tab does not lift the paper. I think a part may have fallen off during shipping since I just recently moved and the printer was working fine prior to the move. Is there a picture anywhere that shows what parts should be associated with the 1x2 metal tab? Any help is appreciated.
|
 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Bert (edited 8/29/07 11:17 AM) reply | + / - | The paper lifter (metal tab) has two small tabs that insert into slots in the bottom of the printer. The sliding paper tray has to be removed to reinstall it. If you need pictures email me by clicking on the crossed tools to the right of my name. Make sure your email address is correct and active.

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by jrap (1/28/08 11:14 PM) reply | + / - | Had the same problems described above where the printer was making a racket and the paper was not feeding. Ended up fixing it by cleaning the black rubber rollers. I took a damp paper towel and pressed it against the rollers while rotating the large wheels behind the rear access panel. Be sure to clean all four rollers. After a good cleaning, the paper picks up and the printer works fine. No longer receiving the stuck cartridge tray error. Good luck.

 | Re: Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Caroline4 (1/30/08 4:45 AM) reply | + / - | Thanks but I've given up. I think it has something to do with the clutch assembly because when you manually hold the clutch down, the paper feeds fine but when it must feed on it's own there doesn't seem to be enouch presure and the gears slide. I tried cleaning the entire assembly and don't feel like disassembling the entire printer and replacing the clutch so I bought another printer.

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Anonymous (12/2/08 1:32 PM) reply | + / - | Without taking it all apart it looks like the photosmart 1100 collects tons of ink on a cleaning pad behind the control panel on the right side. I must have pulled a whole cartridge worth of inky goo out of it. It is hard to get to but there is a white bar that rotates and must clean the cartridges. I guess after almost nine years it gets all clogged up. I used 70% ETOH to clean it all out and that is when I found the rotating bar and saw that it was white under all that goo. I spent almost an hour with paper towels and q-tips cleaning what I could reach. The grinding noise is gone, probably because that plastic rotator that cleans the cartridges can turn now. That and swabbing the slide bar with alcohol fixed my cartridge stuck problem.

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Bert (12/6/08 4:40 PM) reply | + / - | Open the printer as if you are going to change a cartridge. If the carriage stays in the service station, far right, then either the service station is jammed and needs cleaning or the service station motor has failed.
If the service station is jammed repost and I'll supply the specifics for repairing it. If it does not appear to be jammed as described give more details concerning the problem.

 | Re: Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Anonymous (2/7/09 8:16 AM) reply | + / - | This was the best response to date..... tried it and modified it with lubing the metal crossbar with a light coat of WD40.... works like a gem. Thanks, greatly appreciated.

 | Re: Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Steve_K (2/15/09 3:37 PM) reply | + / - | Bert, thanks for your posts to this forum. I have the grinding noise followed by the "cradle stuck" message on a Photosmart 1100. I took it apart and cleaned the area beneath the service station (there was maybe a quarter-inch-thick layer of gelled ink in there!). I also used a teflon wax lubricant to lube the bar that the cartridges slide on and the tracks that the service station slides on.
Now the problem is intermittent. It seems I always get the grinding noise after the cradle moves to the far right, but I don't always get the "cradle stuck" message.
What is making the grinding noise? Is the carriage trying to move farther to the right than is possible, or is the service station getting jammed?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Steve

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Bert (2/15/09 7:38 PM) reply | + / - | The carriage (cradle) is driven by a toothed belt so a stall could theoretically cause the grinding noise, but since you aren't getting a "stuck" message I suspect that the problem is with the service station.
Make sure that cable going to the service station drive motor is plugged in solidly. Verify that the service station sled moves freely by rotating the large white gear. Occasionally the motor, HP P/N C5870-60004, fails and causes the noise. You can find them for under $20 using Google.

 | Photosmart 1115 drive belt off, spring tab broken by mikpar (8/5/09 5:33 PM) reply | + / - | Bert I hope you are still monitoring this site... your post dated 6/11/05 "If the belt is loose, the spring that applies tension to the turnaround assembly will be missing. It is on the far right. The spring comes off because a tab on the turnaround assemble breaks off." appears to be exactly my problem. I put the belt back over the wheels. but it will not keep tension. I see where the post on the left end is broken off. someone mentioned that the spring and slider cost less than a dollar. Are these parts "user replaceable"? I'm comfortable poking around in these things... And if so, where can you get the parts? the HP.com was no help. I couldn't find anything like these parts. thanks
|
 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 Cartridge Holder Jammed by Bert (8/5/09 10:05 PM) reply | + / - | The turnaround assembly (broken), HP P/N C4557-60109, and the spring, HP P/N C4557-00017 are both available online. Unfortunately, they no longer cost "pennies" because HP has offloaded their spare parts to other suppliers. Prices I've seen online are not cheap, considering the complexity of the parts, but not wildly outrageous if you avoid scalpers.
Patience may allow you to avoid removing the case but if you need help email me by clicking on the crossed tools to the right of my name. Be specific about what you are trying to accomplish.
