I know that this issue has been raised several times but I am in need for the reset program for the Epson 580 waste ink counter. Can anyone email it to me.
I cannot believe that Epson can be allowed to do this. Imagine your car if it stopped after 10 000 miles and would go until a service had been performed. Surely it cannot be legal.
Epson should issue a prog to reset the counter.

I have got the prog now. Thanks to all that helped.
Just one thing. Since I have now taken apart the printer in the attempt to fix the problem, I have realised that I can turn the printer into a cd printer. OK I will have to remove the abilty to print to paper but since I have already bought another printer this is of little concern.
Maybe Epson done me a favour in the end eh.

Re: Epson 580 reset...again by Kel (4/14/03 3:17 PM) reply
KEL: Read my reply just above your message, for web-site links posted on this "printer repair site", that other people say work ok...The reason its necessary to have the "Sequential Repair Service Program" on some models of Epson Printers and the reset program on other Epson Printers is because most people want an INEXPENSIVE PRINTER to buy. Do to the lower selling prices of many makes and models of ink jet printers, they are almost thought of as a disposable printer in the industry. I would guess that some frills/add-ons/options are not incorporated into the printer, to keep the costs lower [just my opinion, not from Epson]. After all, low price is why most people buy the small models of ink jet printers. Some of those cheeper models of Epson Printers do not even have an "Operational Control Panel". With no panel, there's no way to easily access any internal menu to use. The "Waste Ink Counter" is stored in a chip, called an EEPROM and can only be reset from the adjustment program/reset procedure...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Epson have done it again. I've tried resetting the counter but I had to clean the pads as I can't source where to purchase. Ok I might not have done a great cleaning job but it was pretty good. Is there something else I've missed? Thanks!
Mac C: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. My guess is that you did not get the reset procedure to take. You may have to try it several times, or try a different source if you think the reset procedure you have is not working. Even if you did not get the pads really clean, the printer has no way to know. Some people don't even clean the pads, they just perform the reset procedure. Of course there's always a chance the pads can over fill and cause a leak, if not replaced or properly cleaned and dried. I'm sorry, but there's no other help that I can give you...Good Luck! Thanks also from me! I didn't need a Mac specific program in the end as I just used my son's PC. And he was the one who said he didn't believe that Epson actually did that!

I too am among the lost souls. Could someone email me the reset program for the Epson 580? I'm running Windows ME and don't have a zip drive. Got the inkpads all nice and clean.
Has anyone thought about a class action lawsuit against Epson? They have really hurt a lot of consumers with this one. Didn't know "manufactured obsolesce" was still with us. We need to get the word out, maybe write some articles, etc. Are you out there, Consumer Reports?
Thanks.
Re: The 580,000th Angry Customer by Alex (5/31/03 5:50 PM) reply
ALEX: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer" and also a "HP Authorized Service Provider", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. The main problem is that most consumers want to pay the lowest possible price for a small ink jet printer. To keep prices low and compete with other companies that also sell inexpensive ink jet printers, some options and internal electronics are done away with. I understand that the "Reset Procedure" on some newer models of Epson Printers, even involves a "Sequential Repair Service Program", which seems to be a repair menu with seven steps that have to be followed [in order] to perform the necessary reset. It appears that this Program is completed using two disks[???], that are listed as "3.5 THD FD". The reason its necessary to have the "Sequential Repair Service Program" [which appears to be two disks], is because some models of Epson Printers do not even have an "Operational Control Panel". With no panel, there's no way to easily access any internal menu to use. The "Waste Ink Counter" is stored in a chip, called an EEPROM and can only be reset from the adjustment program...Do to the lower selling prices of many makes and models of ink jet printers, they are almost thought of as a disposable printer in the industry. i need help with my 1270 epson printer, the company says Buy a new one. this cost $850.00 it does not print black ink. we have changed the ink twice, cleaned it 10 times and still doesn't work. I miss my printer! Help! thanks
Mary: NEXT TIME YOU SHOULD POST YOUR OWN PROBLEM SEPERATLY, ON AN INDIVIDUAL MESSAGE BOARD, ESPECIALLY AS YOUR PRINTER IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT THAN THE PRINTER ON THE ORIGIONAL MESSAGE BOARD...It's possible no one may actually help you because they did not read the board you attached your problem to. Sometimes we may not have the time, or even be interested in reading all the replies on a long message board. Sometimes we may just assume that your information was just a reply to that origional posting by the first person on that board and not even read your message...AS TO YOUR POSTING: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", I'm limited to how much help I'm legally allowed to give. There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer. It's possible that you may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem], or just a clogged "printhead assembly". If you happen to be using refilled cartridges, generic or third party ink cartridges [non-Epson ink cartridges] then its even worse on the printhead assemblies and they may have already been damaged by using the wrong ink. Its possible that you may not actually be able get the printhead assembly to work again. You might want to try using the "printhead cleaning kit", available through the home page on "fixyourownprinter.com" and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again. Its around $10.00 and includes a syringe and the Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution, which is the best cleaning fluid to use, by far. This fluid is capable of disolving most clogs, especially if you use Epson inks. If it does not work, then its generally time to replace the printhead or the printer...REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force. Damage can even occur when you are using the correct cleaning method: the Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution and a Syringe, found in the "printhead cleaning kit" sold off the printer repair site. If you try to force the fluids thru the nozzle, the nozzles can be seriously damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for several days, to try and dissolve a bad clog. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to disolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never disolve, or actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. If the cleaning fluids don't help, then its probably time to invest in a new printer. In some more expensive printers, you may want to get an estimate to replace the printhead assembly, but as a general rule, its not really economical to do, except on more expensive printers...Good Luck!
