Canon MP530 won't print black by gbcs001 (8/18/10 1:25 PM) reply + / -
My Cannon Pixma MP530 won't print black anymore. It prints colors fine. The 'Nozzle Check' shows no black grid pattern at all, while the 6 color bars below are fine. The large black ink cartridge has ink and it does flow when I blow lightly on the vent hole. I've cleaned and deep cleaned the head several times with no improvement. Finally, concluding that the print head was bad, I replaced the head with a brand new one. Still, no change! Can anyone suggest what I can to do to fix this problem? I like the printer and don't want to have to buy a new one.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by gbcs001 (8/19/10 3:01 PM) reply + / -
After talking to a Canon service tech, I threw caution to the wind and disassembled my MP530 all-in-one. He said that the pigmented ink drain hose from the purge unit might be plugged up. Getting to it was no picnic. It meant pulling the print unit. The Canon service manual was invaluable to performing the disassembly and reassembly. I found that, indeed, the tiny hose was plugged with dried ink at the end where the waste ink normally drips into the waste ink blotter. The plugged hose, I understand, prevents the proper purging of ink from the cartridge for preparing it for printing. After clearing the blockage and cleaning up the inside somewhat, I reassembled the printer and attempted to do a head clean and nozzle check. No dice! Colors bars were there, but no black grid pattern. Next I did a deep clean and another nozzle check. Still no black grid pattern. I refilled all the cartridges and performed two more deep cleanings with no success. Finally, I removed the printhead and put several drops of black ink onto the filter inlet where the pigmented black cartridge connects. The ink was readily absorbed into the printhead. I put the printhead and cartridges back into the printer, and without a cleaning, ran a nozzle check. Ureeka! I got a perfect nozzle check pattern. It seems that I had to prime the printhead to get ink to flow from the cartridge. I'm sure this is not normally necessary, so I'm not sure that my purge unit is working properly, but I've been printing many plain black document pages since.

There is a problem remaining, however. I get a smudge at the bottom center of every page if there is text printed there. It appears about an inch from the bottom of the page. The smudge is always the same in shape, size and location. The rest of the page is clean. If I turn abrasion prevention ON, the smudge goes away. Any suggestions as to what is causing this? I think I had this problem before the black ink print problem, so it's probably not related. I've checked the paper for curling, and, although the paper is labeled 'Heavy Weight', it doesn't seem to be particularly so. The smudging occurs when feeding paper from either feed tray.

gbcs001,... Well so far you have done a great job. Most people would not attempt to take apart such a complex printer. However, now that you have done it once, you won't mind doing it again. You didn't finish the job when you had it all apart. You should have removed the main chassis from the base and cleaned all of the ink down their. Also, I don't really thing you got all of the ink out of the purge unit. You proved your head is OK and the logic card electronics are ok by putting a few drops of ink into the head, but I can't imagine that is going to last. The purpose of the purge unit is really not to purge anything, but to "Prime" then head with ink. If it can't do that it can not print. You added some ink and that may last a little while and it may have even closed the vacuum loop between the printhead and the ink carts. The normal process of printing creates a vacuum such that for every drop of ink that is ejected, another drop is "Sucked" via vacuum out of the ink cart and down into the head to replace that last drop. So you primed the head yourself. That was a great idea. However, if the purge unit was really working it would have done that job.

So now when that ink cart runs out of ink, or if the head gets clogged, or dirty, it will stop printing again,... and it won't start again because there is no suction from the purge unit to pull out the old dried up ink and replace it will new ink.

The smudge of ink on the paper comes from the large "Glob" of left over ink from where the center exit tube was dumping it into the waste ink pads in the bottom. This tube was getting clogged and eventually continually sprayed ink in all kinds of direction. Some of it continue to build up above that location and finally the glob got so big it touches the paper as it exits and drops off the last roller.

If you have a hard time believing this, just click on my USER ID and I will send you the email pictures of a MP530 that did the exact same thing. I've had to fix several of them clogged the same way.

The one tube you took off and cleaned out was not the only one clogged. There are several tubes and there is the insides of the purge vacuum pump.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by gbcs001 (8/21/10 7:36 AM) reply + / -
Thank you, Trigger for that explanation. I came to realize that the purge unit was not working properly. After several test prints, the black suction pad was pooled with black ink while the colored ink pad was 'dry.' When I examined the printhead, there was a large amount of black ink clinging around the long, thin print nozzle. I concluded that this excess black ink was not being cleaned from the printhead properly and was somehow smudging the paper at the bottom of the printed side.

Taking the MP530 apart was much easier the second time as you indicated. This time I removed the purge unit which was held in by just two screws. I disconnected the long black tube and found another plug of dried ink in the plastic orifice where it connects to the body of the purge unit. A bit of alcohol on a Q-tip seemed to dissolve the dried ink, but I couldn't be sure. Neither was I sure that there wasn't another clog somewhere else in the device. I did not want to take the purge unit apart to clean it thoroughly. I was afraid I'd never get it back together again in working order. I was tempted to reassemble the printer with the second clog cleared and give it another try, but decided to sleep on it.

The next morning, convinced that the root cause of my problem was a faulty purge unit, I went on-line to find out the availability and price of a new purge unit, thinking that if the price was reasonable, I'd buy a new one. I found Beck's CRS in Glenview, IL. They had the purge unit for $32.50 + tax. To me that sounded very reasonable considering that one PGBK ink cartridge costs over $20 at OfficeMax. They also had the blotter kit with the clear mylar shield which, when installed properly, prevents ink from smudging the back of the printed page. It was priced at $14.99 + tax. Again, very reasonable. It's clear to me that the cost of repairing printers is not the cost of parts so much as the cost of labor. Knowing that my printer would have potentially years of life left if I could get it working again, I coughed up the $50 for a new purge unit and blotter kit.

I was a bit confused as to how to install the mylar shield. The purpose of the shield, the presence of a small rectangular shaped cutout in the shield, and two adhesive strips along the edges of the mylar strip were the clues I needed to properly install it. A call to Beck's confirmed my reasoning. The shield is fastened by the adhesive strips over the black print platten. The rectangular hole allows the center ink drain tube to pass through the shield. The kit also contained a short (1/4") piece of clear tubing and a connector. I can only guess that this tube is meant to be attached to the end of the black drain tube, maybe to provide a larger diameter opening at the end of the drain tube to prevent clogging??

Installing the new blotter was like solving a jigsaw puzzle. The blotter comes in several uniquely shaped pieces that have to be inserted in layers in the bottom panel of the printer in the proper order. There were no instructions with the kit, but the shape of the molded plastic bottom panel provides sufficient clues as to how the blotter should be assembled. The purge unit went in with no trouble at all. Note, the long black tube is not included with the new purge unit.

Having assembled the MP530 once before, doing it a second time went really fast. I had to be careful not to proceed so fast that I overlook a wire connection or two. Taking a few digital camera shots of the unit at strategic points in the disassembly is very useful when it comes time to reassemble the unit. Also, a magnetic tipped Philips screwdriver is a must.

I had seriously considered buying a new Canon MX870 printer when my MP530 went on the fritz. It can be had for just over $200 with a set of ink cartridges as an internet purchase. In the end, I spent $100 to refurbish my MP530 which is now working perfectly. But more than that, I learned a lot about my Canon printer, how to take better care of it and how to fix it when it goes bad.

I am experiencing the exact same problem. I also added some alcohol to the black intake area on the print head (after removing it from the printer) but that didn't help. I was told to soak the print head in warm water by the people I bought the cartridges from. That didn't help. I'm convinced now the purge tubes must be clogged in a way that deep cleansing won't touch. However, I can't find a tech manual to tell me how to access the purge lines. Can I assume they are beneath (inside) the print head and can be accessed after removing the two visible screws on the base of the print head?

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by gbcs001 (8/29/10 8:10 AM) reply + / -
Unfortunately, to get to the purge unit, you have to disassemble the printer (Canon MP530). To do so for the first time, I'd strongly advise getting hold of the service manual. It shows each step of the disassembly process with photos. I bought mine for $3 on Ebay, but it can be found for free on the internet if you search for it.

Speaking from hindsight, make real sure that your printhead is clean before taking on the purge unit. I verified that mine was clean by putting several drops of PGBK ink into the head through the ink intake port (where the ink cartridge connects to the printhead.) Reinstall the printhead and do a nozzle check. If the printhead is clean, the ink will pass through the head and produce an unbroken grid pattern. To clean my printhead, I ran hot water from the tap at full blast into the printing side of the printhead for 5 minutes until all signs of ink coming out of the head ceased. The color inks flushed out quickly, but the pigmented black ink took some time.

When you've verified that the printhead is clean and find the black still doesn't print, carefully disassemble the printer (taking notes and photos,) and remove the print unit. The purge drain tubes are visible from the bottom side of the print unit, and can be cleared without removing the purge unit. Remove the 3" long black tube that drains the ink to the center of the printer. I used a small diameter drill bit to remove the dried ink from the end of the tube. You should also clean out the tiny orifice where the tube connects to the purge unit body. Short of removing, disassembling, and cleaning the entire purge unit, that's all you can do, or, you could replace the purge unit with a new one at a modest cost (~$32) , as I did. I also replaced the waste ink blotters and reset the waste ink counter. My printer works beautifully now. Good luck, I hope you succeed in fixing your printer.

I'm having the same problem- PGBK doesn't print but colors are A-OK. I've perused other threads here and done THOROUGH cleaning of the printhead as directed.. Noticed that the ink intake port screen for the large black cartridge has a few bumps/indentations in it, whereas the other smaller ones are smooth/flat. Don't know if this indicates any sort of damage?

Regardless, my problem is too similar to the others that I've read and gut is telling me I need to deal with the purge unit. However- I didn't want to tackle taking apart the unit without some instructions. Does someone have a link to or a reference for the service manual with photos I can follow? Seemed someone had one for sale at one point... Would be willing to purchase if necessary and reasonably priced.

I bought a copy on E-bay for $2.95. Do a search for "MP530 maintenance manual Ebay" and you should find a source.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (1/16/11 4:48 PM) reply + / -
gbot1970,... I think you are correct in what you have tested so far. I will send you and email and once yor respond I will be able to send you back some testing you can do to isolate your problem between the printhead and the purge unit. It is a rather simple test.

The post the gbcs001 made is correct, but what he bought is the Canon Service Manual, but I have never seen them at that price. That manual is for Service People who already know how to take a printer apart and fix it, so it is mostly to show them what is different from thier other training. It won't tell you one thing about how to fix any error condition in the machine other than basic reset. How do I know this,... I have every Canon Service Manual made since the first Canon Multifuntion printer. I also have created Repair Manuals for all of these printer. I will send you more details once you reply to my email.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by GBCS001 (1/17/11 5:54 AM) reply + / -
The Canon MP530 service manual that I refer to above contains a step by step procedure with photos of how to disassemble the printer down to the print body. The procedure is complex and I wouldn't have been able to do it without the instructions. The manual is lacking in other ways, but in this way it's very good.

I have gone thru most of the 530 examples with my 520 to no avail. Are they essentialy the same mechanism? I bought the service manual from Bulgaria but it does not go beyond removing the covers. How do I go further with the disassembly? Would apreciate any input.
Thank you, Bill Boy

bill boy,... You bought the wrong Service Manual. The MP530 is NOTHING LIKE THE MP520 AT ALL. The MP520 is much closer to the MP510 but is just faster. It uses the same ink carts and all the same parts except the printhead. If you really want detailed information and instructions on how to repair your printer, just click on my USER ID and send me a note. I will respond.

Thank you for the quick reply. I am interesred in the challange of this dissasembly, but is the cost worth it. I worker for Xerox in the 70's & 80's trying to develope an inkjet printer but they conceded to the Japanese. It is amazing how sophisticated and complex they have become! Lead me on!

I think You cannot print using only a black ink installed or full.
If you want black printing only the only way to do that is to use a mono laser.I have not said to buy it - but its the only way that printer will print! This is the best solution for you and There is no software that will emulate ink being present and if there was and you printed you'd be buying either a new print head or a new printer as you'd destroy your printer by printing without ink.

Im glad i found this thread, I as well have an MP530 that just stopped printing black. What is interesting is i actually have two of these machines exhibiting problems that may stem from the purge drain tubes.
Recently i was getting streaky printing in so much as part of the printed line was missing rather than smudging, upon inspection of print head there was an awful lot of excess ink "pooled" so to speak around the actual print head area where the ink comes out. I would rinse it in water, reinstall it and it would print fine for a \couple days.
Rinse repeat.
Yesterday the streaking started again, rinsed , reinstalled, no help, rinsed the head again, this time, the nozzle check printed nothing for the pgbk portion of the test, check ink levels all fine.

Changed the print head with the head form the other machine, same result no PGBK.

so i did a search for mp530 doesn't print black and came across this thread.
SO it seems that i may need to attempt to take the machine apart and check clean the purge tubes.
gbcs001 mentions that the canon service manual and trigger1937 does as well. I am curious id either can direct me to anything available online before i make a purchase.

Thank you

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by BNDAZ (7/15/11 4:40 PM) reply + / -
an update, i tried to prime the head with a drop of ink, still no printing.
So i wonder if it could be something else than the purge tube?

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (7/15/11 10:06 PM) reply + / -
BNDAZ,... The repair manuals I provide also come with the Canon Service Manual, which provides a lot of information but does not go any farther than taking the unit apart. In fact it does not provide any information at all on how to remove the Purge unit. I have sent you an email and when you respond I will provide more information.

it looks like this is an endemic problem with MP530. I used the printer for 2 years printing regularly including 6 weeks sea container transport from Europe to Australia. All fine.

We were away for 6 weeks, were printing on the night when we left and now when we are back it doesn't print the PGBK pattern when running nozzle test.

Where can I buy/obtain the manual to try to fix it or I just buy a new printer and throw away the printer?

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (10/7/11 9:47 PM) reply + / -
nedm,... Don't panic,... the MP530 is one of the best printers Canon has made. It does have a few little bugs but I'm confident you can fix it. I have sent you an email and once you reply to that note I will be able to send you some instructions on how to test and isolate the problem with your printer between the printhead and the purge unit. I assume you've had it for two years and used it a lot and have never even thought about cleaning anything inside the printer,...right.

Re: Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by nedm (10/13/11 8:29 PM) reply + / -
Hello trigger

Thank you so much for sending the instructions. They were very very precise and I was able to clean the head (without having to go to the next phase of checking the purge unit - lucky!) and voila - the printer printed a perfect nozzle test and now back to where I was before conatcting this site. Your generous help made all the difference. Now I also know that the printer also needs a bit of TLC - not just print and print and never look at it (next is cleaning the pads). Indebted. Ned

Hi,

I found this thread during a Google search for exactly the same issue: My dad runs a MP530 since some years, without any problems. Today, he printed ~30 pages in one go, the black suddenly started to fade away as if the cartidge was empty. Allthough there was still a bit left, he changed the big black cartidge for a fresh one. Still no success, the nozzle tests only show PGBK and no black bars in that line. All other colours are fine. Ran ~5 intensive cleanings, nothing. Copying in black & white works though.

I looked at it and fear I might need your help too Trigger, the cartidge seems fine to me (blow in hole, ink comes out), so I fear I have either a broken/clogged head or the purge system is broken/clogged. Can you help me like you helped the others too? :)

Regards, dfence

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (10/16/11 10:29 PM) reply + / -
dfence,.... If you put back a good black ink cart and did a cleaning to get the ink pulled into the head and now the nozzle test print is not good, then there is no way you could have a clogged head. Clogged head is the result of dried up ink setting for days at a time. To me it sounds like the black purge tube is either off or clogged.

First of all "DO NOT PRINT ANYTHING FROM NOW ON EXCEPT A NOZZLE TEST" PRINT. If you try and print something when there is not enough ink inside the head, it can overhead and burn out. I am going to send you and email and once you respond I will send you some information on how to test the purge unit.

I started this thread 14 months ago when my MP530 stopped printing black. I ended up unnecessarily replacing the print head and the purge unit, but was able to fix the printer and have had good use of it since then.

This week the printer again stopped printing black (sigh), and reading through all the posts, it seems there is a diagnostic procedure to determine the root cause which is available from trigger1937.

Trigger, would you send me this procedure? I'd like to repair my printer again, but, this time, without overspending.

Thank you.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (10/22/11 9:21 AM) reply + / -
gbcs001,...I will send you an email and once your respond I will send you the instructions. It is strange that somehow you fixed this once and after 14 months it is back again. The is a design flaw in the MP530 and Canon has made a change in that printer to help resolve the problem. However, they recommend you take it to a Canon Service Center to install the fix, and of course they will charge you for this. The fix requires the total disassembly of the printer all the way down to the Ink Absorber pads. The labor to do this, put in the fix, and reassemble the printer would cost more than 2 new printers,..so you can see why very few people have it done. I will provide you more instructions about this.

Trigger1937, I too am the owner of an MP530 that has stopped printing in black. Was hoping that you might send me the email that I can respond to in order to fully test my machine to see if it is the purge tubes or print head.

Thanks!

capnhart,... OK I have sent you the email. When you respond, but some information in the note and a sample of the last nozzle test print. Give me some history on how you use the printer, how often you print, what ink carts you use, where do you buy ink if you refill you own carts, how often do you print anything.

trigger1937, I think I am in the same boat, my Pixma MP530, won't print the last row of the nozzle test print. I would appreciate if you can send me the instructions on how can I check my purge unit. Thanks in advance!!

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (10/27/11 9:23 AM) reply + / -
jlaverde,... The last row of the nozzle test print is the color photo black. If all the other colors are printing ok there is nothing wrong with your purge unit. Remove and check the photo black ink cart and blot it on a paper towel. You should get ink immediately. Run a cleaning cycle on "Colors" and print another nozzle test print. You may have to remove the head and clean it.

I have the same problem on one of the MP530s. I would greatly appreciate getting the info from you as well Trigger.

I also have an MP530 given to me by a friend, ostensibly for parts.
My friend did not open the box for months after it arrived. The platten was cracked with no recourse. After a few months of using it the copy bar/light (don't know the proper name for it) stuck at the crack and will not return and the printer will not work. I think it just needs the platten replaced.

I would like to repair both machines so I have a back up if/when one goes down. If you know where I can buy the manual that would be great too. Thank you in advance for your time and expertise!

Trigger 1937;
I haven't had time to repair this MP530 until now so i just called canon about the waste pads and the modification for the purge tube.

They only had something called an "Absorber Kit", part # QY5-0146-020 when i asked about the purge tube modification they " dont see anything like that" so i wonder if that is that part of the "absorber kit" ( assuming that is the waste ink pad kit). it was 13.35 plus tax so its right at the price point you mentioned, i was just curious if there is another part number for the purge tube modification.

I'd like to join the Trigger fan club only my printer is a different model.

It's a new, just unpacked Canon Pixma ip4500 (I don't know if this is an old model that just had never been opened) that won't print the PGBK nozzle check pattern - print head was still in original foil etc. clearly had never been opened. All other colors print perfectly. I ran cleanings and deep cleanings but still nothing.

I contacted canon who said they would FedEx me a new print head. After a week of waiting I wrote and they replied they were on back-order with no info on when they might become available and then recommended returning the printer to the retailer. (!, that's a first.)

Reading the above looks like it's neither the print head nor the purge tube so it must be the printer itself? It's also not the driver because I'm doing the nozzle check right from the printer buttons (someone somewhere suggested reinstalling it).

Just thought I'd see if there were any more options before returning it.

Second quick question. I also have a Canon Pro9000II that uses the CLI-8 ink set, which is why I went with the ip4500. Can someone recommend another fast 8 1/2" x 11" photo printer that uses the same inks so I don't have to double up? I used to have the i960 which was an incredible workhorse but it finally retired after 5-6 years.

Thanks.

Hi Trigger, I have an MX870, but I could copy and paste any of the above post's list of symptoms to tell you what is wrong. No PGBK on test pattern, etc. I have spent a lot of time trying to clean the print head and have looked into the purge pad solution, but before I proceed, I would really appreciate your secret information and help. What is the best way to clean the print head? How do I get to the purge pad? Thanks!

Hi Trigger, I have an MX5150, I have the same problem like the others - no PGBK pattern on test. I have spent few hours on cleaning printer manually and doing cleansing test and it didn't work. Could you help me with it, please? Thank you in advance.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (12/30/11 1:51 PM) reply + / -
Arthur,... I have no information abotu the MX5150 printer or what kind of head it uses or the ink. If it uses the standard type head I can send you better instructions on how to clean it. I will send you an email and when you reply I can send the instructions.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by Artur Szajner (1/2/12 6:02 AM) reply + / -
Hi, I would be happy if you could send me instruction, I hope my printer is similiar to others mx series, so at least i would have something to base on. Thanks in advance.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by Artur Szajner (1/2/12 10:46 AM) reply + / -
Trigger,... I can not reply directly to your email address. It might be because of my polish email box. Anyway I resolved my problem. I started to clean part by part everything around ink cartridges. After that I've run test and PGBK pattern was printed in lets say 95%. I printed some text page as well and it was ok. Thanks anyway.

Re: Canon MP520 won't print black by treepmeyer (1/2/12 11:56 AM) reply + / -
Trigger - Seems like I have the same problem with an MP520. Was working fine using Cartridge World ink. Replaced the black when it ran out and it would not print black at all. Ran the nozzle cleaning routine - still nothing. Replaced the cartridge with a Canon cartridge - still nothing. Test pattern was fine for colors. Canon says I have a blocked nozzles. Can you send me your recommended fix? Thank you. For what its worth, I print extensively at tax time, then only sporadically during the rest of the year.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (1/2/12 7:37 PM) reply + / -
treepmeyer,.... It is very unusual for it to be working fine and then somehow clog up after a cartridge change. Double check that you took the tape of the back of the ink cart. Also check the pad around the filter screen to see if it is missing. There is another possibility that something went wrong with the black suction tub in the Purge unit. I am sending you an email and once you reply describing all your problems and what you have tried, I will be able to send you some more instructions to clean the head and test the purge unit.

Wow thank goodness for this thread. My MP530 that's about 3 years old stopped printing black after we came back from a 2 week vacation. bought new cartridges to no avail.
if someone can email me the directions to repair it i would be most appreciative. im pretty good with small equipment, and wouldn't hesitate to dive into this 530. worst come to worst, id spend 100 bucks and get a new printer. but i really like this 530, grown attached to it. refilled my own cartridges (15 times at least), but i thought maybe they got gummed up or something. so if anybody can email me some help, please do. thank you

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (1/7/12 4:46 AM) reply + / -
Khackee,...First you should try and isolate where the problem is before you think about taking it apart. As will all of the Canon MPxxx printers there are dozen of things to take apart and more importantly,..you need to know how to put them back together. It also helps to know just how to test the printer once you do have it apart so that you will KNOW it will work when you put it back together. I am sending you an email and once I get a reply note with your details I will send you some test instructions that will help us isolate the problem between the printhead and the purge unit.

Thank you!

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by treepmeyer (1/11/12 7:15 AM) reply + / -
FYI for those on this thread - the information Trigger provided to help diagnose and fix the blocked black on my Canon MP520 was excellent. Following his suggestions I was able to figure out that I indeed had a blocked black print head and I was able to clean it out. Works fine now and I no doubt have greatly extended the life of my printer. Many thanks to Trigger.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (1/11/12 8:54 AM) reply + / -
rslevin,...Yes it is a common problem but mostly because people don't have any idea on how to take care of their printers. This problem starts with Canon since they have never disclosed to anyone just what to do to take care of the printer. It resides with the owners since they also don't both to find out. I am sending you an email and once you reply I will be able to send you a test instructions to isolate the problem between the head and the purge unit. Then we will know what to fix.

I found this thread and am glad I did. I love to fix things like this. I have the MP530 and i feel like ive had it for some five years and have been super pleased with it and want it to continue working for me if possible. I've done the nozzle check, cleaning and deep cleaning, and the resultant nozzle check print out does not print any o f the PGBK test strip while the color strips are fine. I have purchased the MP530 service manual and downloaded for my use and now I'm interested in getting the diagnosis protocol on how to decide if the problem lies with the print head or the purge tubes or whatever inside my printer. I remember that tigger someone or trigger someone discussed the need to diagnosis what needs to be replaced before going straight to the print head. So your halo would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I guess you can include me in the people who have a Canon MP 530 printer & who have lost black ink...it's obvious a design flaw & I wish Canon would fix this for free...but alas I must do this myself so I need instructions on how to fix my own printer...Thanks

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (2/9/12 8:43 PM) reply + / -
Superd1919,....It is NOT a design flaw,..the failure belongs to YOU. The real problem is that Canon Marketing management has decided the best thing for business is not to TELL you how to maintain your printer. Your MP530 is about 5+ years old and let us suppose that you bought a new car 5 years ago and you've run it for 5 years just putting gas in it. Yes you know there is a hood,..and there must be something under there,..but you really have not looked at it for the last 5 years. Is it any wonder the motor burned out from lack of water or oil. All of this applies equally to your printer,.. the only difference is that Canon never told you that you had to clean anything at anytime,...i.e.,.. there is no maintenance description. If you knew how to take care of it and did the maintenance,..it would never fail. Tell me any other product that contains this much technology that requires "NO MAINTENANCE AT ALL".

I am sending you and email and when you reply I will be able to send you more information on how to test and isolate the Black ink problem for you printer. Once we get that done then we will worry about how to maintain it.

Re: Canon MX870 won't print anything by 626manny (2/17/12 9:00 PM) reply + / -
Trigger,

I'm hoping you can help me out. I am brand new to this forum (or pretty much any forum for that matter), so I hope everyone will forgive me if I accidentally display bad forum etiquette (if such a thing exists). Though my printer is a Canon MX870, I believe I am experiencing the same problem that many have posted here about their MP530. Almost immediately after replacing the Cyan and Magenta cartridges, those two colors stopped printing completely, not even so much as a smudge. Numerous deep cleanings did not change anything. Replacing those two brand new cartridges with two other brand new cartridges (all authentic Canon products)did not change anything. Initial searches on the net led me to multiple suggestions on how to clean the print head, figuring I had nothing to lose I tried to clean the print head. Turns out I did have something to lose... after re-installing the print head and cartridges, I couldn't print any of the 3 colors or 2 blacks. Again, multiple deep cleanings did not change anything. I ordered a new print head from Canon and still no change, the nozzle check sends out a completely blank page. Between the cartridges and the print head, I have already thrown away a significant amount of money trying to fix my 13 month old printer so I am more than willing to tear into it and try to fix it if I can get the proper guidance because the alternative is to scrap it and buy another one.

Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (2/18/12 11:17 PM) reply + / -
626manny,,.. Since you admit you are new to this kind of stuff, then the very obvious question is,.."Did you completely remove the Yellow tabs on the top rear of the ink carts". The way you describe the failure led me to believe that was the problem to start with. It is only a possibility. Now we need to do some testing of your print head and find out more. I am sending you a note and when you reply I can send you the test information. You must do it today as I leave for vacation tomorrow.

I am yet another to add to the list of those with a Canon MP530 that has stopped printing black. Have tried all the usual clean and deep clean procedures, made sure the cartridges have ink and that it is flowing etc. but no joy. The nozzle test shows the other colours are O.K. but nothing in black. Trigger, if you are able to send me some advice on how to resolve the problem, even if I have to take the printer apart to do it, I shall be very grateful.

New to this process, but I have a similar problem with an MP830, the nozzle check prints all the colors including black, but the PGBK grid only prints half. I have done all the deep cleans, replaced the cartridge, and took the printhead out and soaked it overnight. Same result. Not afraid to take things apart and put them back together if the instructions are good. Any help with this would be appreciated. Really like this unit.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by Schwep (3/7/12 10:36 AM) reply+1 + / -
I have the same problem, but with a twist. Trigger helped me out as far as possible, I now know that the print head is not clogged up but there is likely something wrong with the electronics or the firmware as my printer prints just half the PGBK pattern, perfectly, and the half not at all. The blot test Trigger devised for this is really helpful.
Meanwhile I have found a temporary solution for anyone who needs to print a document with their MP530 or similar model and can't get the pigment black (PGBK, the large black cartridge) to print correctly.
If you print any document on normal paper, the printer will use the large cartridge for anything black, including shadows in photos etc. What you then see happening in a document like a web page with a colour background and black text plus a few photos is that the photos look strangely washed out and the text is not black but white - the colour background leaves space that should be filled up with black ink, but isn't.
However, the MP530 and similar 5-ink models also have a photo black cartridge, BK, which is the same size as the three colour cartridges. This uses a dye-based ink, not pigment-based like the large PGBK. I found that the printer only uses that photo black cartridge when it is loaded with special photo paper (glossy, matte or whatever). However, you don't actually NEED to load it with photo paper, you just TELL it in the settings menu that it is now using any of the special photo papers from its built-in list (say, matted photo paper or 'other photo paper'). This provokes the printer to swap from using the large PGBK cartridge to the special photo black - for the whole page. And surprise, there is your text. You simply leave it charged with normal stock paper and don't use the high-quality settings you might want otherwise use for photo printing - you maintain standard settings.
This prints a lot slower than a normal text print, but at least you can get your document printed.

Attention: To all of you that may be trying the "Photo Paper" fix to keep printing once the black won't print,... You are driving your printer towards the edge of a cliff. I suggest that you stop printing at all until you can clean the head and fix the problem,.. or just go ahead a buy a new printhead. The problem with ink jet printers is that NO ONE HAS EVER EXPLAINED TO YOU HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THE PRINTER FROM DAY ONE. As a result people just keep on doing "NOTHING" in the way of MAINTENANCE and as a result they end up with a damaged printer. What if you drove your car for over a year without ever checking the oil or tires or water,..or anything. What if you never changed the oil or filter or put in antifreeze. How long do you think it would go without a problem.

If you want to know how to maintain your printer,..just send me an email.

Wow, I had no idea that so many others have experienced the same problem (or at least symptom) I am experiencing with my MX870. I too can not print any black (PGBK). After many attempts at cleaning the printhead I was ready to start more invasive troubleshooting but came across this thread and thought I should get a little more info from Trigger before continuing. Any advice on what my next steps should be? Thanks a bunch!

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (3/30/12 10:35 PM) reply + / -
jmwolf01,... Like so many others,..you are having the same problem once you have lost control of printing in Black ink. Most people don't want to hear the real truth,.. and that is that you did this all by yourself with a lot of help from Canon. Let me guess,..you've had this printer for over a year and your warranty is all over,.. and now,..our of no where your printer won't printer black. So the question is,.. have you ever done anything to clean your printer or do some regular maintenance? Of course Canon never told you that you "Should do basic Maintenance" on a regular basis,..so you didn't do anything at all. You are not alone,... 85% of the owners push the printer to far and abuse the ink system,..and then they wonder,..."Why is my printer having problems".

I will send you this email and when you reply with your name, model number , and a description of your problem,.. I will be able to send you some files that MAY help.

Thanks Trigger. I have a Canon MX870 Multi-Funtion Printer about 15 months old. You are right on with your assertion ...I have not performed any routine maintenance other than performing the occasional cleaning procedure. A few days ago I noticed that the color printing was not as crisp so I performed the 'deep cleaning' procedure on my way out of the house. The next day I got back and tried to print out a PDF file with color and black text but only the color printed. I have tried several 'deep cleaning' procedures since hoping it would eventually help but it has not. I am now at the point where I am looking for some guidance. Any help would be appreciated

Bndaz,.. Don't get too happy,..yes you have lied to the printer to force it to print black colors using all 3 of the color inks. Does this sound like you are saving money. Yes I know, you don't give a *&%$#@#. You just want the printer to run. What ever the problem is with the black section, you are making it worse and you are probably going to one day forget and try and print normal black and then you will burn you printhead out. Why don't you just learn how to clean the printhead and fix the problem right. If you want to know more,..click on my user ID and send me an email with some information. I'll send you the instructions.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by BNDAZ (edited 4/15/12 5:41 PM) reply + / -
Trigger, if you look back through this thread and perhaps your invoices you might recognize that i have indeed already gone through the steps you provide, identified that its likely a clogged purge tube. I ordered YOUR repair manual and the parts from canon. The issue is i just dont have time to take this printer apart, i care for two elderly inlaws who take up almost 100% of any free time. i resent the fact that you presume i dont give a "*&%$#@#".
I was just curious about the matte photo trick and was surprised when it worked.
That said you claim it uses all the color cartridges to produce black, it was my impression that using the matte setting forces/tricks the printer into using the smaller BK BLACK rather than the PGBK where the purge tube is clogged.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (4/15/12 9:59 PM) reply + / -
Bndaz,... I never have the time to "look back through this thread" Hell,.. I AM ONE OF THOSE ELDERLY PEOPLE YOU TAKE CARE OFF. You caught me on one of those nights after the nurse had just shouved somemore gunk down my throat. I was not in a good mood. If you have been in contact with me directly,.. why you would post a new question to this thread. Anyay,...I'm better now.

Now for the question of printing on Matte paper. The Large Black ink cart is "Pigmented Ink" and is only used when printing text. If you try to print a document and nothing comes out then you have a problem with the BLACK ink or the head or the purge unit. When you tell the printer you are printing on "Any kind of photo paper, such as Matte or glossy, it will print what ever you submit as if it were a photo or graphic image. In this way it will use Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Dye BLACK to print in color. To produce real black, it will take equal parts of Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow,.. and just a little bit of Dye black to print your document. To reproduce the color spectrum the only colors that have been used in printing,,.which are called subtractive colors, are Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. If you put one tiny dot of each of these on top of each other,.. the results will be a "Black Dot". When Canon added the "Black Dye" ink, this expanded the range or gamut of colors they could produce and the new black allowed them to produce VERY dark "BLACKS" as well as "Black & White" prints.

My point in all of this was to help you and stop you from continuing to print in the "photo paper" mode,.. since in the long term it will destroy your printer.

Hi trigger1937,

I have been reading through this thread and it seems like I am experiencing the same problem as most of the posters with the Canon MP530. My printer has been printing fine with no issues until a few days ago when it just stopped printing black ink. I have performed multiple regular and deep cleanings and the test print out still is missing the black test grid at the top. I tried printing a document a day or two later and it printed but now it is back to spitting blank paper out. I would like to note as others have said that the color ink prints just fine. Anywho, you seem to be everyone`s knight in shinning armor when it comes to printers and saving them so please HELP!
Thanks!

Hi Trigger1937, I've emailed you a moment ago, similar problem I think in that blk text documents are not printing (it does print in a coloured text), but just wanted to add that your response to BNDAZ was really helpful in explaining that the PGBK Pigmented Blk is used for documents (text) and Dye BLk for pictures. Thanks , Dma001

I have an Canon MX870 that has the same problem, won't print pigmented black. This started after I was away for a while. At first, the nozzle pattern was broken. I replaced ink. Nozzle pattern still broken. Then, I soaked the printer head in Windex as some people suggest. Now PGBK prints NOTHING!

trigger1937, can you help?

DMA001,,. I got your email and have sent the file to you.

itsg,.. This could be a defective purge unit or it could still be a clogged printhead. I am sending you a note and when you reply I will send the test data you need to isolate the problem.

Hello trigger1937,

I have sent you an email, because I have a similar problem with my Pixma IP4500.

Pigment black won't print at all.

Already changed printer head as well as ink cartridge, and still get blank pages.

All other colors including black for photo print well.

I'm guessing it's not the print head, ink cartridge nor software issue.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi trigger1937

I have the same problem with the Canon MP530. First off I had an error which required the replacement of the print head which I have just done.

I have put the new print head in and done an alignment. Went to print a black and white document with no luck. I have done a nozzle check and get 6 lines come up C,C,M,M,Y,BK. I have done some cleaning cycles and still nothing. Would appreciate your assistance

I'm experiencing the same issue, with the PGI-5BK cartridge refusing to work. The printer doesn't give me any error message and everything else works fine. I have changed the cartrdige with a new one but with no luck.
If you could send me any direction about how to disassemble the printer to solve the problem it would be very appreciated.

Hi Trigger1937,
I was hoping you might explain to me what you meant in a previous post when you said "Also check the pad around the filter screen to see if it is missing." what pad and or filter screen are you referring to exactly? the ink inlet on the printhead which touches the cartridge?

Bit of history so you know where I'm at...
After cleaning the print head, disassembling my whole printer, cleaning purge unit tubes, pads as well as waste ink pads...I still have the same problem with the black not printing test pattern or anything at all.
This is where I came back to this forum and kept reading hoping to find another suggestion.

Hope you are well, and not completely sick of the torrents of requests for help that I see here are never ending.

Thanks in advance. Jo.

Cannon sucks. this happened to my mp600 laster year. replaced it with an ip4820. that one stopped printing blacks. had to replace it 2 months ago. now my new on is doing it. on the first 2, the pgbk went first, then the bk. now the bk went first.

i print alot of blacks. i print dvds with alot of blacks in the labels. i cant believe this pos only lasted 2 freakin months. and another thing, you cant disemble an ip4820. there are now screws. tried a new print head, and even a new black. tried cleaning the heads. tried priming the head. its obviously this pos purge unit.

the only other option i have is to get an Epson for cd/dvd printing, but i had them before. they literally take 7 xs longer to print one dvd.

i only have 1 question: if i get a Canon PIXMA MG6120, is it possible to dissemble when the purge unit clogs. are there manuals out there for this unit? thanks.

This is unbelievable, after viewing all these complaints regarding this common pgbk black ink problem with canon printers, you would assume canon would get the message by now or maybe they turn up a deaf ear. I recently went through this ordeal after 6 yrs. Had I viewed all these posts prior,I wouldn't have purchased another canon. My question is,is the problem caused by black pigment ink or re-mf'd. ink that's clogging the print head. Trigger, your doing a great job helping out. It would be helpful to see you post maintenance instructions for all to see. Thank you

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (7/19/12 10:45 PM) reply+1 + / -
Freeportfrank,... What you are suggesting is just not that simple. For the past 5-6 years I have been helping people with their Canon printers as best I can. To that end I have created 30+ PDF files, each one specific to a different problem or a different printer. At the same time I have created 45 Repair Manuals for virtually every inkjet printer Canon has released. There is no mechanism on this web site to embed files and there are no links. For me to do what you suggest I would have to "Re-type each of these instructions over and over,..for every printer type and every thread that has a unique question,.. as there is also no central repository.

My solution has been to direct contact those people that need help and once they send me a response with their information I send them via email everything they need. This give me the ability to send them large files of typically 1+ MB and there is just no way I would post that on any thread. Sometimes I must send them 2 or 3 files.

Now for the issue of Canon Printers. 1. They are not designed to fail. 2. They are the best printers in the world. 3. Over the 6+ years I have supported this web site I've seen 1000's of problems with Canon Printers. 4. I've seen 100's of printers with the same problem.

However,.. Canon has released over 75 different models of Inkjet printer and they sell anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 of each model so in actual terms the number of problems is way less than 1%. I personally know that Canon makes the best printer and has done so for the last 15 years. You can still purchase repair parts for the vast majority of all of those printers.

So what is the problem????. 1. Canon knows what all the problems are and will only provide technical support if the product is still within warranty. The US labor cost are so hign that while Canon does maintain Service Centers, the cost of labor is so high it is no affordable to them to repair any printer. So why don't they just tell us the answer to these problems The marketing group at Canon has so much power they pretty much control what the company does with each product. If a printer has a problem in Warranty,..they will fix it. If it is out of warranty they DON'T WANT YOU TO FIX IT,...THEY WANT YOU TO BUY A NEW PRINTER. Once you buy a new printer (because it is cheaper than getting the old one repaired) you are now committed to the "NEW INK CARTs",..which hold less ink and also cost more.

2. Once a printer is out of warranty Canon does not want you to fix it yourself. 3. The real problem is that "You" are the problem. You really don't bother to take care of your printer. The reason for this is that Canon DOES NOT SUPPLY ANY SIGNIFICANT INFORMATION ON HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THE PRODUCT,...EVEN THOUGH THEY COULD. I personally can assure you that if you knew these secrets and followed them,..you would never have a problem with your Canon printer and it would last forever,... and at the end of "Forever" you could still order the part that failed from Canon and fix it yourself and you would be good for another dozen years.

If you want to know more just click on my USER ID and sene ME an email.

Had almost given up on my 530 until I 'stumbled' upon this site, it appears I am not alone ... I have had my 530 for about 5 years and reckon it is one of the best printers for printing glossy photos.

Unfortunately for about a month I have been unable to print black, I could only print colour. I took the print head out, washed it, put it back but still no black. Then about 2 weeks ago the 530 ceased to print colour - Now when I try to print, the page comes out blank, no black and now no colour.

Have tried cleaning/deep cleaning, washing the print head and still no change. I even replaced all the cartridges. Still no print.

Did no know about the "purge unit" until I came across this thread, I would rather not replace the 530 and do wish this forum can help me solve the problem. Thanking you in advance.

updates on MX860, last week i found this site and me too my problem was the PGBK, i fixed the problem for now. i did a bunch of deep cleaning on the nozzle and it didnt work, soaked the printhead in hot water still didnt work.

i was ready to order a new printhead when i gave it one more shot. this time thinking it was just trash so i might as well go all out.

while i was soaking the printhead, i noticed some dried up ink would come out and so i would move it to a next spot in the pyrex glass. i did this couple times when nothing was coming out. placed back in the printer still nothing.

soaked it again, this time hotter water and more water, to a point where its almost at the electronics part. then i noticed more dried ink came out. i also poured some hot water where the ink enters from cartridge.

then... it started printing again, but still not perfect, still had a lot of missing lines, opened the printer and noticed the purge unit, i dropped some hot water into it and it would absorb some but then the water will just sit there, so i took a table napkin and dried it up, did that a lot of times till the color purge turned white, (color no problem printing). the black though never turned white nor did it absorb any water, so i assume purge unit clogged? but then again i pressed the napkin down hard on it and it would seem to absorb a lot of black ink.

after these steps and a lot of deep cleaning, mx860 lives!!!

thanks guys.

Too all of the people that follow this web site. From the note above you can see just how difficult it is some times to get the printhead clean once the Black ink has dried up. It takes a lot of patients and cleaning and soaking and cleaning,..ect. I had sent the instructions to Bisdak10 at a point where he was ready to throw the head out and get a new one. Thanks to his patients and hard work he has the satisfaction that he spent no money and got it back 100%. It has also taught him what to look for the next time things go wrong. Spoke to a canon tech, mentioned about maintenance, said their is no maintenance required as long as their printers print????? I'd like to send him a copy of all these complaints.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (7/26/12 8:02 AM) reply + / -
Freeportfrank,... In a VERY LIMITED SENSE he is correct,..but I would NEVER suggest that to anyone. What he is telling you is that if you take perfect care of the printer everyday by printing something everyday and watching the colors and you make sure you never let any of the ink get low then it will print fine for years without doing anything else. I can testify to this as my primary printer is now 6 years old and I've never had to take it apart. I refill my own Canon ink carts with the best ink I can buy and I never turn it off and I always print a nozzle test print before I print any color photos. The difference is "I know how to test it and I know what kind of trouble to look for and I know how to put it into "Service Mode" and examine the print from every nozzle.

I use it for printing everything from document, photos, business cards, CD's, Xmas cards, etc. I think the most important thing I do is "Use it everyday and never let it get dried up"

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by freeportfrank (7/26/12 1:00 PM) reply + / -
Hi Trigger, You mentioned that you never turn off your printer, why, does this mean that every time you do turn it on you waste ink? also, how do you put the MP530 in a service mode? I was trying to E-mail you to get help to fix my printer and clicked on your user name but kept getting fixyourownprinter.com ordering page. Am I doing something wrong? Thanx

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (7/26/12 2:31 PM) reply + / -
freeportfrank,... The way to contact me is just to click on my USER ID and that will set up a page where you can type and send me an email. That is how I'm going to send this note to you. ONce you get it you will have my email address and will be able to send me any questions you want.

I never turn the printer off for two reasons. The primary cause of failure of any electrical/electronic component is "Thermal fatigue",..which means that some pieces of metal connection over heats and cools and after it does this 1000's of times the connect fractures and breaks,...and this results in an open circuit. So if you never turn the unit off the electronics stay at some allowable maximum temperature. The fractures always occur because of the "Cycles of Heating and Cooling,..Heat and cold.

The other reason is that Canon has a built in timer that checks to see how long it has been since you last printed any document and if it has been over 12 hours it will do a built in full cleaning cycle at the next time you request a print OR AS YOU TURN THE POWER ON IT WILL DO THAT CYCLE. A cleaning cycle used 10x as much ink as you would use to print a nozzle test and just think how fast you ink level would go down. Many people never even print things in color and after a couple of months they wonder why the colored ink carts are low in ink.

I could continue to TYPE all of the information I normally provide in my Repair Manuals but that would take over 200 pages and 200 MB of text and pictures. They wouldn't like that on this web site.

Hi,After reading all these reports re: problems with Canon printers mainly with the MP530 and the attempts being made to correct the problem, taking the printer apart, purchasing new parts, trying different repair procedures only to find It still has the same problem and to start over and over again. My question is, is it worth the aggravation or do I just go out and buy a new printer, now, every time I look at my printer I say should I or shouldn't I. Big $250.00 decision.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (7/28/12 8:27 AM) reply + / -
freeportfrank,... and for anyone facing the same question,...It always comes down to a couple of key questions. 1. Are you the "Fixit type of person with plenty of patients". 2. Do you have more money than time. Having a new printer provides you the opportunity to start fresh and learn how to take care of the printer before it runs out of warranty. However,..if you don't learn the right things as time runs out,..then you are now out $$$ and will be back in the same problems but this time they will be worse,...as the new printers have been redesigned to "Stop people from fixing them" All previous Canon printers had built in "Service Mode" functions that would allow anyone to find, fix, and reset error conditions. This function has been removed from the printer and put into special software for each printer and is not available to anyone except Canon Service People. That is why I have stopped working on NEW Canon printers. Even if I could find and fix the problem,.. I had no way of resetting the ERROR,...so the printer remains useless. Besides I'm getting too old for this and I've done it for 6+ years and my wife wants it to stop.

WOW, well said. Trigger, I have been a fix-it type of person for many years but when you get close to 86 you lose the courage, motivation and patience to tackle any kind of job. This MP530 is mind boggling just looking at it frightens me. however, I was able to finally figure out how to get the print head out soaked it in hot water overnight got all the ink out now, I'm trying to figure out how to check the nozzles to see if their clear without re-installing the head. I still intend to E-mail you for your help when I get stuck or close to giving up. Thanks

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (7/29/12 7:40 PM) reply + / -
freeportfrank,... All of the Canon MPxxx or MXyyy printers are very complex and have 100's of parts. The good news is that most of the time you really only have to worry about 5 or 10. The best way to test the head is to put it back in the printer with GOOD ink and print a nozzle test print and only that. Once you get a perfect test then you know you are ready to print whatever you want. The key to success is "KEEPING YOUR PRINTHEAD AND INK IN THAT CONDITION.

Same issue for me but on a Canon Pixma MP560: the black pigment tank just stopped printing a couple weeks ago. I tried refilling the tank, washing the print heads, swapping the refilled tank for a brand new one with the same results: no black printing pattern from the big black tank.

I am surprised to see how many people are suffering for the same issue across different printer models.

So, Mr. trigger1937, I kindly request your help too, I hope you are still willing to answer at least one more request for this.

Best regards, thanks in advance.

I have read this thread and am curious what can be done about fixing my MP560 that won't print anything out of the pgbk black tank. I have tried cleaning the heads and running cleaning cycles (both standard and deep cleaning) to no avail. When I run the test print nothing shows up from the pgbk but the other cartridges print fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi.. apparently the same problem as many others.. my fat black cartridge won't print; if I print normally, I get text coming out as outlines (with the solid black missing).. if I print in grayscale, I get nothing.. all other colours work fine.

I expect the head is clogged (the cartridge seems to be fine). Trigger, can you please forward me instructions on how to clean it? Thanks!

This seems a good thread to begin as have a Canon MP620 experiencing the same as many of you -- no black -- color ok. Have changed the printhead to no avail. Sounds like purging tubes is the answer, but not prepared with instructoins or time yet to try. Have already spent $$s on printhead and ink. Thx to this Trigger person and unending patience. Someone at work gave me another printer so I am going to remove the 620 and set up the other and try to find instructions and so on, add the repair to all of the other "to do" activities in my life. God Bless

Hi Trigger, I am very impressed with all the machines you have helped to save from the scrap heap. I have a Canon MP510 with the same problem as Cassie98 (2/29/12 11:46 AM)i.e. the nozzle check prints all the colours well but the PGBK black grid only prints the top half of the grid and the top half of the letters 'PGBK'. I have thoroughly cleaned the printhead. Is the problem likely to be cleaning, hardware or software? Thanks

Looks like our beloved MP540 has fallen victim to the same ills as described above. I have tried cleaning and deep cleaning the heads. I have removed the head and washed with q-tips, but no joy. Add me to the list, but have a Canon MX870, the color comes out fine and if the the color picture has black in it it comes out gray/white depending on the background. But how i differ form the rest is sometimes when lets say if i have cleaned the print try or done a deep nozzle clean it kinda prints black/grayish but this only a page than it goes back to just printing out a blank page when i try to print in black and white.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for your step by step advice. If I had been on my own, my printer would be parts in a basket now with no hope of recovery.
As it is, I have passed it to another who can give it the exercise that it needs when he buys a new print head. I included your instructions for long term care. I am moving to a laser printer.

Hi there,

I have a problem with my MX870 that has caused me endless frustration. I hope you can help.

For a time, the printer was no printing yellow properly. Coloured printing turns out bluish/purplish. After doing some research, I finally decided to clean the print head by soaking it in warm water.

AFter cleaning the print head, printing yellow now works. I tested it by drawing a rectangle in a word processor and fill it with yellow. It printed ok. However, when printing complex images like photos etc, the printout appears faint and there are there are streaks of faint lines (yellowish/greenish) on the print. Can I get some advise please? Will change the print head resolve the issue.

Many Thanks!

Hi Trigger 1937. I am also experiencing the won't print black problem with my MP 530. Please send me the information I need to start the fix. Thanks for all the time you have provided to everyone to get their printers back.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (10/9/12 5:36 PM) reply + / -
tschultz45,... You should know up front that this problem is typically caused three different ways. 1. The black section of the printhead is burnt out because you continued to attempt to print when the ink was very low, empty, or the head was clogged up. 2. The purge unit has a fault and can't deliver the ink. 3. The printhead is clogged with dried up ink and no ink can flow through the head.

The only options you have is to test the printer and identify which one of these is the REAL problem. To do this I am sending you a short email and when you reply to that note with your printer informtion I will be able to send back to you the test instructions you need.

Dear Trigger1937,
my Canon MP530 black printing has been playing up the last 2 months.
2 months ago , the black stopped printing clearly suddenly. On the test pattern, the other colors were fine but the black PGBK test net pattern would be missing in parts.

I proceeded to clean the exterior of the print head with warm water. I used a syringe to force warm water onto the ink pads on the inside of the print head craddle until i can get a good flow of water coming out of the print head nozzle. I did this because this fixed the problem of non printing with a previous canon printer i had.

Despite flusing the print head , the PGBK did not improve and in fact worsened. I gave up and resigned to the fact that i will have to get a new printer.

That was in August2012. I have been away on vacation until this week and no one had used the printer. When i try to print a document this week, miraculously , the printing is almost as good as normal. However on closer examination of the text printed, i can see streaks on the sentences where the black print has had deficiency in ink sprayed. In some of the pages , there would be up to 10 sentences where the horizontal white streaks of ink deficient printing is evident. However, the printing quality is still a lot better then when it was playing up in August 2012. The nozzle test pattern is perfect on testing.

Is this a case of the purge pipes being only partially blocked??

I have had this printer for the last 4 years and would use it on the average about once a week. I refill the ink cartridges myself and have been using different brands of so called "Canon compatible inks".

I would really appreciate your advice on how to manage this problem with my printer and thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Thanks!

chenfm

Can anyone recommend an affordable printer that doesn't have so many issues???? I'm usually a fix it type person, but this sounds like a pretty complex fix. I think I will give in and get another printer. Please advise. Thanks!

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (10/25/12 4:58 PM) reply + / -
kim44,... In my opinion the best printers are the Canon printers, but you need to learn how to take care of them. Since the Canon printheads have such high resolution printing, such as 1, 3, and 5 Pico liter nozzles it is MANDATORY that you learn how to maintain the printer and keep the printhead clean. This is especially true for the Black Pigmented ink used in the large black ink cart and is primarily used for print B/W documents and text. However, if you learn how to take care of it there is no problem at all. The posts you see are from people that have not learned how to do it or what to do.

If you think this is beyond you then select a Canon or HP printer that use ink carts that have built in printheads. The advantage of this is that everytime you run out of ink and buy a new ink cart you are getting a new printhead. It is more expensive and can still have problems but at least you know if it is not working you can buy a new ink cart and start fresh.

I have been using two Canon Printers for over 5 years, one is a multifunction + FAX and the other is for photo work. Neither of them have ever caused be a problem because I know what to do to take care of them.

In your post you did not really mention what your problem is so I would assume that you're having problems printing in Black. I am sending you a copy of this note and when you reply to me I will be able to send you some simple instructions to isolate and fix your problem.

I have a Canon MP530 printer that is a little over 5 years old. Recently, after printing a couple pages, the black ink stopped printing. I would turn off the printer for half a day or overnight, and then I could print a couple pages before it stopped printing black again. I did do print head cleaning (regular and deep). It really didn't help my problem. A nozzle check showed the 5 PGBK cartridge not printing. I installed a new cartridge, but black is still not printing.

Trigger1937...I have a MP 560. Cannot print black properly. Color printing is faint. The test pattern shows good for color and BK, but the PGBK is smudged and faint. Tried cleaning mode...no real change.

My Cannon Pixma MP530 won't print black anymore. It prints colors in streaks. The 'Nozzle Check' shows no black grid pattern at all, while the 6 color bars below are in line patterns. I replaced all color with brand new cannon inks. I've cleaned and deep cleaned the head several times with no improvement. Can anyone suggest what I can to do to fix this problem? Thanks!

Yikes - I'm near the end of my tether with this one. I replaced the printhead thinking that would solve all my problems but still I get nothing out of the large black ink tank, which I have also replaced. I also dripped a little water onto both of the absorbent mats to see if this was working - the water soaked away so I am assuming that it is OK. I would SO like someone to help me with this, please ...

i have a canon mp530 printer which has served me well for a long while til lthe PGBK (black ink tank) does not print. the rest of the tanks are OK. As my printer is obsolete in Singapore and sending to Canon will incur cost I decide to DIY. As this is my first time disassambling a printer. Kindly provide with notes that will ease the project. Thank you.

I did find an online copy of the service manual that helps with dis-assembly, however doesn't seem to have much/any info on cleaning purge tubes, etc.. Hello everyone!
This thread seems like a ray of hope for yet another desperate (and ignorant in the ways of maintenance) canon owner.

I have a Canon MP610 and was very very happy with it for years, but after not printing for some weeks and upgrading to windows 7(64bit) the PGBK has stopped completely. No smudges no lines, nothing, all other colours appear happily on paper but things such as text or dark sections of images are invisible. I bought a new PGBK ink cartridge but no change. I cleaned (quite thoroughly) the printer head soaking it in hot water and even carefully unscrewed the bottom part to clean it from the inside but to no avail. After testing it I got the same results, colours print but the black PGBK remains completely invisible.

trigger1937 should be hired by Canon as a consultant and force them to add to their manuals "Maintenance 101 for your printer"

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (12/10/12 6:14 PM) reply + / -
Radicalmjp,... Thanks for you comments,.. and you are right as I could put sufficient information on this or any other web site to teach people the best way of taking care of their printers. Then canon would not like that since their printers would probably last 10+ years and no one would ever have to buy a new printer. I am sending you a short email and when you reply I will be able to send you the files you need.

Hi, I have 3 Canon MP530's and one of them stopped printing with the large black cartridge, so after cleaning the print head (didn't fix problem), I ended up just replacing the print head and all works well again.

Now a second printer is having problems printing the Photo Black. Any suggestions before I Clean and/or replace the print head on this one? Also, I would be interested in seeing your "Maintenance Recomendations" for this printer. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (12/13/12 9:16 AM) reply + / -
Tenderfoot,...With that many Canon printers, especially the MP530, you really need to learn how to take care of them. I am sending you this short email and when you send me back an email reply I will then be able to forward you the files that you need. Don't through that other printhead away as it may only be clogged.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by radicalmjp (12/15/12 4:34 AM) reply + / -
Apparently my canon MP610's print head is busted. I am disappointed by Canon failing to mention how to take care of their printers or even failing to install systems to prevent damage to the printer itself, and even more by the fact that the print head costs as much as a new printer. I probably will not buy a new print head as the cost is too high. I will keep it as a scanner and see if I can later buy another printer (or if I can get a print head for cheap on ebay). I will print with the gloss paper trick for now.

Pitty because this is such a great printer, but I can't help feeling sucked into the consumerist tactics of a major company. An average user that buys a printer cannot be expected to research (or bug trigger1937) the internet BEFORE running into problems, I had no indication or warning before the damage was caused, prints/alignment was perfect.

Note that my print head printed ok three weeks ago, and after two weeks of no printing the printer head died. Assuming that shit happens, the replacement head is ~100€ which is very close to the printer+scanner price, which just does not seem right to me.

I hope anyone with these printers starts taking care and enjoy these great machines. People spread the word, advise friends to take care by maintaining their printers.

I cannot thank trigger1937 enough, for his time, expertise and care. Trigger1937 if you ever visit Athens/Greece I owe you a beer.

trigger1937, thanks for the instructions you sent me on cleaning the printhead. My Canon MP530 stopped printing out of the PG-BK cartridge, but I followed your guide and now it's working great again. The print head must have been clogged, but soaking and cleaning it solved the problem. I've probably had this printer for 5 years, have shipped it cross-country and across the Atlantic and back when I was stationed overseas...hopefully it will last another 5 years!

Hello all, my mp610 finally died.

After the problems with the PGBK ink that were diagnosed thanks to trigger1937 (thanks again) I used the printer with the glossy paper trick and to print CD's. After two weeks that I was away the printer stopped completely to work. No lights no nothing. I tried all the reset tricks (plug in to power socket while holding reset/power button etc.) but nothing works. Called for repair but the cost to repair this problem and replace the mainboard would be like buying a new printer. To printer PSU is ok I measured it.

So I have some questions.
1) Does anyone know if there is a difference in print quality between the Canon PIXMA MG5450 vs the MG5250?? It seems just like external differences to me. These are printers that interest me.
2) And (to trigger1937), if the new printers from canon have the same problems and last more/less than the mp600 series?

Thanks

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (1/17/13 6:24 PM) reply + / -
radicalmjp,... As we have talked about this before,.. I suggest that you open the top cover and see if you can move the carriage out of the home position. If you can then you can remove all of the ink carts and the printhead and close the carriage head lock and top cover. Now see if the printer will power on. If it does it will come up to ready and tell you to install a printhead.

When the printhead fails with an internal short this locks the entire printer up and sets a "Sorted" condition which shuts the printer down. After that it will not power on. This error code is stored inside the EEprom on the back of the printhead. Give this a try and send me the results.

I would not recommend any new printer over the MP530 except for the MX850. Everything else uses the newer "CHIPPED" ink carts that hold 30% less ink and cost 25% more.

I am not a tech genius, but with some instructions i think i would be able to solve the probelm. Can anyone provide me with some instructions?

Thanks.

I tried your advice but to no avail. It is completely dead. I decided to open to printer (wow! lot's of wires!!!) to see if I can spot anything like a burnt capacitor or blown fuse but it all looks fine.

Btw the printers you mention are not available in Greece... :( I saw today the mp430 (if I remember correctly).

I am attracted to the MG5450 because the price (119 euro) seems like a good deal but the ink cartridges as you mention hold 7ml instead of 13ml....

Re: Canon PRIXMA MX870 Not printing yellow by Jagart (1/20/13 8:04 AM) reply + / -
After posting that I was having problems with my printer printing yellow I recited an e-mail from Bud Stansbury telling me in detail what I needed to do to get my Canon Prixma MX870 printer to print all colors. I follow his sugestion and the problem was fix!

Here is his suggestion:

Jagart,... Open the top cover and when the head comes to the center pull out the power cord and remove the ink carts and cap them off. Unlock the carriage lever and remove the head. Take it to the laundry room sink and set the water flow to as hot as you can tolerate on your hands. Focus the stream of water onto the input filter screens
on the top and when most of the ink is flushed out, turn the head over and focus the stream onto the nozzles.

After a few minutes turn the head over away from the stream and look at the filter screens. If they show any color or black, rinse it off and turn it over again and repeat. When one or more of your colors has been clogged for awhile, it may be necessary to soak the head in 1/2" of hot water for a couple of hours. The
problem is the water will cool off and you have to keep refreshing it with more hot water. Repeat the cleaning and focus the stream on both the bottom and the top. Keep this up until you see no more ink on either side. Again, if this is a stubborn clog, you may have to soak it another night.

When you think you have done enough cleaning, dry the head with compressed air until you know all parts are dry, especially behind the circuit card on the back of the head. If you don't have compressed air use a hair dryer set on maximum air and lowest heat but make sure you get it dry. You may have to let it dry overnight. Before you put everything back, test all of your ink carts for ink flow. Dab the ink cart on a folded paper towel and you should easily get a drop of ink. If now blow with your mouth into the top rear air intake of the ink cart and you should have ink drop onto the towel. Once you know the ink carts are ok, reinstall all of them and return the power. THEN THE FIRST THING TO DO IS TO RUN A CLEANING CYCLE THAT WILL FILL THE PRINTHEAD WITH NEW INK. THEN PRINT A NOZZLE TEST PRINT AND NOTHING ELSE. IF IT COMES OUT GOOD THEN YOU HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL. IF IT IS STILL BAD, THEN PULL THE INK CARTS AND THE HEAD IN THE SAME MANNER AS ABOVE AND BLOT THE BOTTOM OF THE HEAD ONTO A FOLDED WET PAPER TOWEL AND EXAMINE ALL
OF THE COLORS. If you don't see the color you have been cleaning, this means the head is still clogged and no ink is being sucked into the head by the purge unit. You will have to repeat the cleaning until you get it clean. If there is only one color missing but the others are there, then you know that the purge unit is working ok, since it has sucked the other two colors up into the head. The purge unit sucks all colored inks at the same time. It has a separate suction cycle for just the large Black ink.

It is a Canon MP530 which worked for years by the way.
Recently I tried abacqus 3rd party ink -- for the colors but not yet for the PGBK 5 ink...
Don't know if 3rd party ink damaged something.

Nozzle check shows all color lines, except the black.
A straight copy of a black document produces empty page.

Help?

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (2/7/13 9:38 AM) reply + / -
To Everyone with the "WON'T PRINT BLACK" ERROR. I'm affraid you waited too long and you have already burnt out the head. After working on dozens of these cases where the Black all of a sudden totally stops printing the evidence is clear. You continued to print after the output was showing poor black printing and you possible let the ink get very low. Add to this you don't print very often and then one day you need to print and NOTHING COMES OUT OF THE BLACK. When a part of the head gets clogged up with old dried up ink and you continue to print those nozzles that are clog get over heated since they have no wet cool ink in them at all. The printer is still sending high current pulses to try to print but all it does is continue to overheat each nozzle. All of a sudden one or more of them burn open and the head will not pass any more firing pulses and therefore no more printing. You can continue to print text documents by telling the printer to use Photo Paper but this will eventually also overheat the color sections of the head.
There is a 0.1% chance you can clean your head but that is very rare. If it will print even "1" nozzle bar then you still have a chance. You can Call Canon at 1-866-481-2569 and check the cost of a new head. If you want more information on how to take better care of your printer next time then click on my USER ID and send me a request.

Trigger1937 – Thanks for your help with my MP970. The info below should apply to the iP4500, MP610 and other similar printers. I was having problems with the 5PGBK ink tank not printing even after a thorough printhead cleaning. Thanks to information provided in the manuals by Trigger1937, I was able to determine that the purge tank was not drawing the ink through the printhead. This can lead to error codes appearing and overheating and possible permanent damage to the printhead. I removed the ink tanks and printhead and was able to access the purge tank area. I removed the ceramic like pads on top of the purge tank assembly and left them to soak; they were quite “stuck” with ink. Trigger1937’s suggestion was to drip a very small amount of hot water into the purge pad area and then cycle the printer with the cover up. I did this about 6 times. The water was sucked in and ran thru cleaning the purge tube assembly. I also cleaned the purge tank top area with Q-tips lightly soaked in isopropyl alcohol. I put everything back together and printed a few pages and ran a successful nozzle test. Thanks again to Trigger1937.

Hi Trigger1937,

Looks like I have the same problem as everyone else....my black ink cartridge that prints text is not working. I have a MP620 and have already cleaned the print head and the pads. It looks like it might be clogged tubes. Can you send me information on how to get to them and clean them?

Thanks!

Trigger1937 I too have just encountered this print issue. I print frequently and have performed maintenance although I guess not often enough. I would really like to know how to care for my MP530 printer but need to fix it first as it is like many in this thread not printing form the PGBK black ink. Would you be able to send some instructions on how to test and clean purge lines please. Thanks for your guidance.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by BGKK (3/3/13 12:48 PM) reply + / -
I have a Canon MP530 that has the problem with the PGBK printing nothing at all with the nozzle check, even with ink manually added to the mesh screen prior to installing the cartridge. This same cartridge does a perfect nozzle check in my other MP520 so I know the cartridge is not the problem.
I read somewhere that changing the printer setting to photo paper sometimes worked, and sure enough I now get beautiful black print, even when the printer is set to use "grayscale".
I do refill my own cartridges, and as one of my printers does not use a photo grey cartridge, and I have no interest in printing high quality photos, I refill the photo black cartridge with pigmented black (PGBK).
Would any expert here be able to explain this? It almost seems like the photo setting is forcing a "pure black" image (PowerPoint graphic with color setting 0,0,0 ), to print with the photo black cartridge instead of with the PGBK ink as I would expect for pure black.
I have marked the side of my PGBK cartridge marking the ink level to see if it changes.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by BGKK (3/3/13 2:19 PM) reply + / -
I did much more reading and it appears that when photo paper is specified it is quite possible that the PGBK ink is not being used.
I'll continue to use the other printer until I hear back from Trigger1937. As I suspect the PGBK part of the print head is already dead as it won't print anything even with manually loaded ink to the mesh screen, perhaps continuing to use the photo setting is an option? The colours and black all looked excellent on the one test page I did.
Thank you for all the useful information in this forum. I did send Trigger1937 an email by clicking on his link and will await his reply.

Trigger
First thanks for your willing to help people with our printers. I stumbled on this site while looking for a solution for my problem. My Canon MP530 quit printing black and most colors after I moved and the printer set in a attic for a few months during the summer. I have completed deep cleaning and it started getting better to where my colors are coming back and the nozzle check now shows all colors but it is streaky. I can copy a black document now, when I started the deep cleaning nothing would copy black. It just now seems faded or not a bold as it was. Also when I do a color copy it is very streaky looks like lines through it. I have had the printer about 6 years and probably need to do a maintenance cleaning after reading your post. Any ideas? We buy our ink from cartage world locally. I looked for a data plate with a serial number but could not find one on the machine.
Thanks,

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black - results by BGKK (3/7/13 5:56 AM) reply + / -
I just went through the eight step instructions Trigger will send you, and as a retired Engineer familiar with test procedures I can say his instructions are very concise and a well thought out diagnostic procedure. As I was not familiar with the details of how printers worked and how the cleaning procedure functioned there were steps I would not have thought of to determine if the purge unit was operating properly.

Unfortunately I'm now certain the PGBK head is dead, but at least I didn't spend hours disassembling the printer to reach that conclusion.

Thank you Trigger for all your dedication sharing your experience.
Now there is at least one more person doing better routine maintenance on their printer!

Brian.

Trigger,

Interesting read regarding the "MP530-wont-print-black-in-spite-of-umpteen-deep-head-cleans" problem that, until I found this thread in an idle moment, had convinced me that the only solution was to throw my MP530 in the river and buy a new one. I have now bought the service manual on-line and am going to try and fix it this weekend.

Can you send me the additional/complementary information that you have produced and is discussed in the threads?

Additionally, the top sheet feeder stopped working a long time ago - if you have any suggestions to how to fix this as well, I would be much obliged.

Thanks in advance.

I was having a similar problem and eventually just gave up with my Canon printer. OKI Data launched a new mono MFP last summer that was cheaper than Canon and got great reviews so I went with that instead and couldn't be happier!

another one here, PGBK won't print, or only prints alternate smudges.

sorry, 'twas a vague description. Here is an image from my MP800:

The page has alternate bands of dotty black, and then no ink.
Some letters are visible at the end of rows.

Often I get no black at all. I don't understand when the CLI-8BK ink is ever used; it prints perfectly on the 'nozzle check' page but even on a word doc including colour it appears to used the PGBK where there is no color.

I'll read the docs you sent and report back.

thanks

I just picked up a used mp530 and at first nothing was printing so I performed many deep cleanings and now when i do a nozzle test the color prints but not the pgbk. I've taken the printerhead out and washed it and tried to clean with q tips inside where it sits to no avail.

Trigger I've sent you an email if you would be so kind as to forward me the info on how to fix this. Greatly appreciated.

Just joined the forum. I have the same problem w/ Canon ip4300, which worked very well for 5 yrs, and had plenty of ink in the black tank (PGBK) when it stopped printing (black only). I was using a generic black ink cartridge at the start of the problem, but it was the first time I had ever tried one. It was still half full when the black stopped printing. Got a new Canon PGBK cartridge, tried several deep cleanings, which I observed quickly used up my inks. The new black cartridge (Canon) is now only half full - w/o printing anything!

I found this forum and tried some of the suggestions a couple of weeks ago, washing the print head in the sink under hot water a couple of times, and saw a lot of ink go down the drain. Nozzle check shows all colors printing except PGBK. From the description of testing your purge pads, I thought mine looked okay. Just wondering if there is any hope at this point. Hate to throw away this printer. Will also email Trigger1937 for any more specific instructions I missed. Thanks for all the advice here.

Also, any suggestions for a new printer similar to the ip4300 (under $100 if possible) would be appreciated.

Oh I'm so happy to have found this site. I've been told I need to replace the printer head which will cost me more than I paid for the printer! I can still use the scanner but just can't print black.

I'm not a business person and just can't afford to purchase a new machine so I'm very willing to TRY to fix the problem myself (60yr old female will try very hard!).

Trigger, if you would please assist me I would really appreciate it.

OK - same problem as everyone else on my MP830. I have tried all of the steps up to the "taking apart" steps. I don't think I can do that successfully. I am furious that I have owned this printer less than two years and may need to replace it. Knowing that they have this problem is there any place that I can take the printer to get it fixed???

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (4/9/13 9:33 PM) reply + / -
gScott,... & Irishroan,...I will guarantee both of you that the problem will turn out to be your fault. By that I mean that you really never learned how to take care of your printer so somehow you are amazed that it fails. The real problem is that you probably have never even opened the Canon USER Guide for your printer. On page 103 to 106 are some simple instructions on how to detect and clean printheads that are not printing correctly. Canon tells you to contact their Service Center if you see defective printing and the beginning of a clog and you are not able to clean it using their instructions. If you ignore this information and continue to print the chances are you will burn out the head. That's the one thing they don't tell you. Just like the new car you purchase and drove for two years and never check the oil.

I am sending both of you this email and if you want more information on what you can do and how to test the machine to isolate the problem all you have to do is send back an "EMAIL REPLY" to me so I will have your address and then I will be able to send you the instruction. If you have my information before hand you would have been able to keep your printer in top condition for a 'VERY LONG TIME'. Let's hope you haven't waited too long and your printhead is still functional.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by barbs1953 (4/12/13 1:27 AM) reply + / -
I agree with your response 100%

The problem is that I so seldom used the printer and never noticed that there could possibly be a problem on the rise.

When I contacted Canon (in South Africa), they advised me that they don't work on the MP530 any more and gave me a number to call which I did.

I was informed that "that is the problem with those printers, you have to use it constantly". I tried someone else, who advised that it was probably the printer head and that it wouldn't be worth my while to replace it but rather to purchase another machine.

Have a great day!

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (4/12/13 8:44 AM) reply + / -
Barbara,...I'm sure that is what they told you and the fact is they don't want to work on any of their printers anymore. The cost of labor everywhere has made it impractical for them to staff professional offices with trained Service Personnel to find and fix problem. It is a time consuming process to take any of the Canon printers apart. If they work on it for "1" hour it would cost you almost $100 plus parts. They like it much better if you just go buy another printer. They know they have a great printer so they would rather sell the new ones,..especially since the new units have smaller ink carts (1/3) that cost 25% more.

The truth is that most people can fix their own printer if they have the time and a good work space. I am sending you this email and when you send me back "YOUR EMAIL" I will be able to send you more information. Have you been able to contact anyone there to find out the cost of a new printhead?

Hi Trigger1937 - I have a Canon Pixma MP610. When I print a pattern test, all ink cartridges test well except the PGBK cartridge. The pattern is missing lines. When I print a document, there are horizontal lines running down the page under all sections of text, and the text isn't printing clearly. I have cleaned the print head and the ink nozzle for PGBK (with distilled water, not alcohol), but the issue has not resolved. Any advice? Kind regards, Nan

OK. I have given up. I took mine apart and got some excellent advice from trigger. I actually used one of those "canned air" dust-removers to blow out the lines between the dumper pads and the blotter - very, very clear.

I got the printer back together and powered up without error, but there was a physical alignment problem "inner cover open" that just prevented it from working. I didn't have time/energy to invest in taking it back apart again. I suspect it needed a new $60 print head anyway.

So, I have an MP530 if anyone wants it. I also have 8CYM and 2x 8Bk cartridges - Canon OEM, unopened. $20 for the ink + packaging and UPS shipping for the printer - pay via PayPal if anyone is interested.

I bought a new MP920 and like it just fine. Network attached. Adapting to loss of MP Navigator software, which I just loved, but things change. The 920 duplex scans from the ADF without user intervention - too cool.

Let me know if you are interested. I suspect box and peanuts + shipping will run $25-30, but I could be wrong. Not sure how Amazon does it.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (5/8/13 3:03 PM) reply + / -
jshireync,....Sorry about your problem. When you put it back together you missed one instruction and that was how to make sure the inner door was closed and in the correct position. There is a tiny switch touching that door (which is really just used to print on CD's) so the printer will know when that door is open or closed. You can probably fix that switch without having to take that printer apart again. Did you purchase on of my Repair Manuals. It would have shown you detailed pictures of all of this. I do not recognize your user id so I can't find any information I sent you. If you can still fix the MP530 it would be worth $130 on Amazon.

In order for me to help you I am sending you an email and when you send me a reply to that email I will then be able to send you some instructions to test your printer. However, since I have no way to return to this web page and locate who you are I need you to list your printer model number and a short description of what the problem is. Once I have that I will be able to send you the correct instruction you need to test your printer and send me the results. I prefer to do it this way because this web site has no support for posting large documents or attaching high resolution digial images. Once we communicate via email I have the ability to do all of the above.

Trigger sent me very clear instructions on how to troubleshoot the printer's problems, and how to unclog the print head. Not a snap to do, it took some time and patience. I waited until I had a day free to devote to it. I followed his instructions and it worked. Even if I had done all he outlined and my printer failed to work, at least then I could buy a new printer knowing I'd done all I could do. But, in fact, by following Trigger's instructions my printer was salvaged. (I am not a natural at understanding mechanical problems but I was able to understand Trigger's instructions.)

He also gave me instructions on maintaining my printer so this doesn't happen again. Thank you, Trigger!

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by WildcatRudy (6/13/13 1:32 PM) reply + / -
Well, add me to the list of failed black. My symptoms are the same, but I wonder exactly what might be wrong.

I picked up a new MG5320 from a local seller--the box was missing the inks, but the rest of the printer was unused. In other words, it still had the clear film all over the outside of the printer, and everything internal was taped down with the orange tape. For $35 I can't complain!

I picked up some Canon ink and here's what happened. First, back on Saturday, I printed a photograph that came out perfect! The detail was very sharp and vivid. This morning, I went to print out two vouchers on plain paper using greyscale (which uses the PGBK tank per Canon)--basically just text and a barcode. The first page had the text printing horribly--it was somewhat ragged and looked crude. The second looked like the ink was running out.

With this printer being used for less than a week, I would not expect anything to be clogged. I ran a cleaning, then ran a deep cleaning, and the PGBK test pattern does not print out at all. Or actually...it did twice. I took the black cartridge out and it was definitely wet where the ink comes out, and the cartridge is full. Once I replaced it, the PGBK test pattern has some missing lines, so I re-ran the cleaning process again. The test pattern was nearly perfect, as was the text next to it. Third pass? No output again.

I am wondering if these printers are tested at the factory and if so, if there was ink in the system that may have dried in place. I am guessing that this printer uses a similar purging system to the MP530 originally posted in this thread, and it seems that my removing and replacing the black cartridge one time got it flowing.

That does lead me to one question which might be a clue. The cartridges ship with a yellow strip to be pulled off. On top of the ink cartridge, the remainder of the yellow strip did not come off as cleanly as it did on the others. I realize that there is something of a vacuum that pulls the ink through the print head, but isn't there a small vent on top of the ink cart that should be open as well? Otherwise, I could see suction building inside the ink cart that would prevent any ink from flowing, much as it will do when a gas cap on a small engine is not vented and the carburetor can no longer draw gas through it. I may try making sure that nothing on top of the cartridge is blocked. I could see an older printer with a lot of pages having clogged, but not a new one.

And BTW, trigger1937, you are quite a trooper for helping everyone out here! I hope you're appreciated for your efforts!

And sure enough, that was the problem. Maybe I had to talk myself through it here? ;) Sorry for the false alarm.

The yellow tape was too sticky--it tore off in a spot that kept a small vent covered. The vent in these cartridges is a small maze-like plastic channel that goes underneath the main product label on top. When you pull off the shipping tape, it is supposed to expose the "L" shaped end of that vent to allow the cartridge to "breathe". Turns out that mine did not tear off enough to expose the vent and as such, the cartridge failed to print. I had to use a small knife to peel back the adhesive enough to expose the vent.

So there's an important tip: make certain that vent is exposed!

Results: the test pattern printed perfectly, as did the three pages I needed for tomorrow. I could have printed it the laser printer, but 1) I was lazy and 2) I really needed to make certain that this printer was running at 100%.

Hello trigger!

I'm in the process of trying to fix up my dad's MP5320 that is having a 'no black ink' issue.

This printer was working just find up until about a week ago. It prints color just fine, but if printing black&white it will just spit out a blank sheet. Tried deep clean/new cartridges/etc, and now assume it's a bigger problem.

If you can send me that fantastic email I've read about countless times throughout this thread I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

You could also attach a copy of the nozzle test image and that will tell me the whole story. Then I will be able to send you the instructions you need.

Bud - Thanks so much for the *very* useful diagnosis & repair info on my ip5200r. As your tests proved, my PGBLK wasn't just clogged - the printhead was finished. I ordered up a new one and THIS TIME I will take good care of it, as you explained!

Much thanks!

Trigger1937. Thank you very much for the personalized attention. Your experience and guidance has proven invaluable resurrecting the printer. Initially I had high hopes the cleaning would do the trick. Unfortunately upon seeing the blot test you indicated that the print head had failed. I purchased a replacement (no longer available from Canon - OY6-0059). Initially that did not appear to resolve the issue, but after a few tests it is now working fine. Thanks again.

I bought a new black 8B ink for my MP530 since it was the only low ink. I just did a nozzle check and print pattern which printed okay and now the printer only prints the color portions of my document! No black at all. Please help me Trigger1937 - what did I miss? We've had the printer for several years. Thanks.

My Canon MP530 will not print in black - prints in colour with no problems. I have done all the nozzle cleans etc and the ink cartridges are new/full. Reading the forum, this appears to be a common problem, however I do not know how to fix it? Any help or suggestions? Many thanks.

evancise,... I get 10 emails a day about the MP530 and none of them had your name on it,...Plus I have no way of knowing what "same issue" is so I am sending you this email and you can reply with your email and then I will have your name and email address.

When any of you have a Canon printer problem you can contact me directly by just clicking on my USER ID on any of my notes and you can then send me an email directly listing your printer and problem and some name I can recognize. That is the best and fasted way to reach me. If you just post a note here it may be days before I have time to read it and I may miss it altogether.

THANKX to TRIGGER1937!! I have a 2yr old Canon MG5320. Must be a cousin to the MP530. I had the same problem as so many others i.e. the PGBK(Large Black Cart) would not print. I sent an email to trigger1937 and he sent me his wonderful instructions to really clean the print head. Long story made short - COMPLETE SUCCESS!. My PGBK nozzle was so badly clogged that only the dogged persistence suggested by triger1037's instructions did the trick. I was lucky to have NOT burned out my print head because I had read the admonitions about printing w/o ink to the print head before my trouble. Sure is great to have such dedicated and wise people as trigger1037 to help us with these printers. Thanks again trigger1097, you're the BEST! - harryk

Following up on my earlier request for instructions on fixing my printer, I left out the details of the problems I am having. My Cannon Pixma MP530 won't print black, however, prints colors fine. The 'Nozzle Check' shows no black grid pattern at all, while the 6 color bars below are fine. The large black ink cartridge has ink. I've cleaned and deep cleaned (3x) the head, but to no avail. Also get error msg that print head alignment couldn't be completed. I tried again, got the same error. It also makes the loud noises when first printing then stops after first page. Had this printer for about 5 years. Never had a problem until now. As you mentioned before, other than the typical nozzle cleaning, no other maintenance has been performed. My bad! Any help is truly appreciated.

trigger1937, I am going to email you as per your message above.

I'm also posting this here to add to the public record of this problem with this printer.

My Canon Pixma MG 5320 has the same problem a lot of other people have; the black printing is grayed out. (I suspect the black won’t print from one of the cartridges.) Color seems to print fine.

When I print the printer’s test pattern, the color is fine as far as I can tell, but the bottom part that is supposed to be black is actually gray. And the top part that is supposed to be black does not appear at all!

I’m guessing, based on other entries in the thread, that the problem is the clogged drainage hose and I’ll have to disassemble the thing and unclog it somehow.

Re: my printer won't print black. I want to thank trigger 1037 (bud) for all his help. It seems we are all doomed to a system of throw it out and get new. Parts are no longer available for the 830 from canon. So after the cleaning procedure he has given you is completed and you still have no black your head for primary black is more than likely bad. As his advice was given just use photo mode to reproduce black it will use the other colors to make black. I spoke to canon tech and parts are not available any more. I am probably just as upset as anyone else but just change setting and you can continue to print. Spoke to canon and if you would like to replace they have a discount program available. Parts are available on Internet but wouldn't trust. Only option is buy new or change settings and buy ink. Thanks again bud

My MX 870 has the same problem as everyone above. Won't print pgbk black. Tried removing and cleaning the print head, soaking, windex you name it. Finally bought a new print head, installed it correctly and STILL having the same problem. No black/text printing or copying.

Is the printer done for or can i try something else?

Trigger1937: My printer is a MP530, Serial number AAMS87237 (I can't find any other identification marks), which came with a Dell PC (Windows 7) that I bought early in 2011. The printer has worked well, except that today it would not print black (in a document). Checked ink cartridges (all red-light o.k.), ran the Cleaning and Deep Cleaning programs, then printed out the nozzle check, which showed the C through BK bars but not the PGBK graphic at the top. Re-ran the cleaning programs, same result. Went online and found your forum, read down about 3 years, skipped to the bottom to see if you were still about, and decided to email you to see if you can send me instructions on how to get the 530 functioning again. I have learned from your forum that there was a whole lot of maintenance I have not done (nada, other than replacing ink cartridges).

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by BAB (9/4/13 7:55 AM) reply + / -
In a nut shell, if it won't print black, its the printhead or the purge unit. Usually the printhead is plugged up because the purge unit cannot draw ink out of the printhead. Check the black pad on the top of the purge unit. I have also found many purge units to have a disconnected hose underneath the black pad running to the pump of the purge unit or the black hose has gotten sort of tangled up in the purge pump and is not pumping. You may need to rebuild the purge unit.
But in most cases its the printhead.

Sounds like my daughter's printer is in the same boat.

Canon mg5522

The black ink was only printing intermittently (and sometimes grayish) across the page. So we ran a deep cleaning and now the page is completely blank i.e. there is no printing at all from the black cartridge. Plenty of ink. Have not yet tried printing a test pattern, but likely the printer is at least in need of basic cleaning. No maintenance since new.

I would appreciate Trigger's advice on how to isolate the problem.

Like many of the others, I have a Canon MP530 which does not print black but prints colors, and all the ink cartridges are new. I've tried all of the simple fixes that Canon instructs you to do. But I'm afraid the problem is more complicated and I'm looking for help.

Wow Trigger, hope for so many like me at the end of the rope. Thank you. I too have an MP530. I just got off the phone with Canon, very helpful in running through the Nozzle Check and Deep Clean, but no good results. His last suggestion was to try to buy a new print head online. I'm wondering now if that's a good idea, plus they're even more expensive than the plug unit and most seem to be refurbished from Hong Kong. My situation: I bought the MP530 about 4 years ago. During the first year I got a paper jam alarm. There was no jam and after much work I found a Canon rep who gave me a push button and hold procedure that eliminated the alert and allowed the printer to work. Some time later and with not too much use, I received the same alert, but no one at Canon knew what the button push/hold procedure was; instead they said the printer was dust. After much more time and to bring this story to the end, I decided to try again. Troy at Canon was a big help, and in the process of inspecting, I'm embarrassed to say that I found there actually was a jam, hidden away in a back compartment I didn't know existed. So the point of all this history is that the printer sat for longer than it's been in use. When I finally got it going the color worked but no PGBK (I hadn't had this problem before so assumed it was dried ink somewhere. I replaced all the cartridges (the PGBK twice) and did numerous deep cleans and nozzle checks. I get all the colors on the nozzle check but no PGBK grid, nothing at all there. Also removed and returned the print head to check for damage. Did a mini alcohol cleaning with a kit, but very superficial. Would love to get your test/clean instructions. I just sent you a note via clicking on your user link. Writing this to give you background. The printer has had very little use. Just as a side, not long after I got the printer I started getting a grinding sound whenever the printer starts up or does whatever re-setting it does. Canon had no workable ideas about this. It continues. Thanks again for any help. If you send me an email, I'll reply as you've described above. All the best to you.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (11/12/13 1:32 PM) reply + / -
Many people have sent me email asking,.. Who are you?,…Why do you do this?,…Who pays you for what you do? Does this website pay you for your response? The answer is no one pays me at all. They also ask me “Why do you help others?” Some people just say,..”This must be a trick or there is a gimmick in here somewhere.”

The answer is,…I have been helping others for about 8-9 years and I do it because “I Can”. It started as a hobby and developed into something a lot more. I provide as much information as I can at no cost to anyone,…but when the printer problems become so difficult that something inside the printer is damaged or broken then people need much more detailed help. So I created Repair Manuals for 45 different canon printers to SHOW AND TELL people how they can do it themselves. This started because years ago when I took my own Canon i560 Printer into the Canon Service Center (100 miles away) it was going to cost me more than I paid for the printer just to have them take it apart and diagnose the problem and then there was no guarantee they could fix it.

So,..being an Electronics Engineer I did it myself. It was so successful that I did it again and took pictures of every part and each step. Then I wrote a manual by combining the necessary instructions and the pictures into a very detailed PDF document.

A while later a friend in my neighborhood had a problem with his Canon printer and asked me if I could fix it,…so I took it apart and found the problem and fixed it and of course I took detailed close up pictures for every step. Later that year I also upgraded my office to Canon Multipurpose all in one MP730 printers and did the same to that unit. Before I knew what happened I was buying broken printers and fixing them and selling them on Amazon. After I did 45 printers my wife told me,..”Either the printers go,…or you GO”. Over the years this has developed into 45 Printer Repair Manuals and 35 PDF documents and guides. In the process I’ve learned a lot and many others have also provided me their insight to solving problems. Experience is the best teacher. If you want more information just click on my USER ID and this will open a box where you can create and send me an email.

Thanks for all the good wishes and support.

Trigger.

Hi Trigger,

just wanted to say thanks for all you do, it's awesome. Meanwhile, I have a MP600 that stopped printing black. It was working perfectly earlier today and suddenly quit. Ran all the utilities to no avail and eventually called Canon. They told me to buy a new printer. I love my MP600. If you can help that would be fantastic. thanks. Shaeri

Printer won’t print Black (or even some colors)

To Everyone with the "WON'T PRINT BLACK" ERROR. I'm afraid you may have waited too long and you have already burnt out one or more nozzles. After working on MANY dozens of these cases where the Black all of a sudden totally stops printing the evidence is clear. All of a sudden one or more of them burn open and the head will not accept any more firing pulses and therefore no more printing. You can continue to print text documents by telling the printer to use High Resolution Paper but this will eventually also overheat the color sections of the head if you don’t get the head clean. There is a 5 % chance you can clean your head but that is very rare. If it will print even "1" nozzle bar then you still have a chance. You can Call Canon at 1-866-481-2569 and check the cost of a new head. If you want more information on how to take better care of your printer next time then click on my USER ID and send me a request.

All of the above is also true for the color inks but since they are all DYE inks they are not as thick and don’t dry up as easy. However MANY people hardly ever print anything in color and therefore try and save their ink. The old ink is still sitting in the nozzle and drying up because of the excessive heat in the rest of the head that is printing all kinds of text documents in black ink. Sooner or later the color section of the head will burn up a nozzle and you will get an error code and nothing will print.

Inside the printhead there is a decode chip that directs the high current pulses to the correct nozzle. Because the Black Pigment ink is so thick it is easy to clog one or more nozzles over an extended printing period. Since most people never print a nozzle test print (until they are having problems) they don't realize that they are gradually clogging up the black section of the head. As the ink gets low it starts to dry up around the lining of the walls and the input filter screen. To print a single ink jet bubble, the printer sends a high current pulse to the nozzle that should be full of ink. Note that we are talking about a Pico liter of ink. The pulse heats the walls around the small amount of ink very fast and as it heats the ink expands in size. It continues to expand until there is no space left and then a pico drop (bubble) is expelled from the nozzle,...this is one ink drop that hits the paper. The entire ink path from the ink cart down into the head and to each nozzle chamber is one long solid flow of continuous ink. As one ink drop is ejected,...vacuum pulls a "Cool" replacement ink into the nozzle. The nozzle depends on that ink being cool to keep the nozzle at normal temperature. Sooner or later some nozzles begin to accumulate dried ink on the walls and this leaves less space for new wet cool ink. As printing continues the high head gradually dries up more ink. If the head is not maintained or cleaned then one or more nozzles will become clogged. When this happens and the printer is forced to continue printing those nozzle overheat and can eventually burn out or the decode matrix burns open and the high current pulse is lost to that matrix.

In addition to “Drying Ink” there are other problems that can eventually cause the same problem. Poor quality ink carts that cannot sustain proper ink flow will break the chain of ink and leave air gaps in the ink path and this destroys the vacuum chain. After excessive use the purge unit also creates problems since the ink pads get clogged up and prevent the purge unit from “SUCKING” new ink down out of the ink carts and into the nozzles. Each and every part of this must be maintained to have successful printing and long life.

I have several printers that I use all the time for the last 6+ years and they are still using the same ORIGINAL CANON INK CARTS that I refill as required. This is not luck,..it is knowledge. I know what to look for,..I know what and when to clean,…and it works. The secret is you have to start at the beginning from day one and keep the printer and ink supply in top condition. If you do this your printer will last for a very long time.

If you want to learn more just send me a note and I will respond.

Jahnie,...I need to send you a short email and when you reply to that with your email I will then be able to send you the instructions you need to clean and test your printhead and purge unit and that test will give us the answer as to what the problem is. When you respond please mention the MP530 and that it won't print black. It would speed things up if you would also attach a copy of the nozzle test image from your printer.

I discovered your thread on the Canon MP530 not printing black.
I was printing a 75 page document, ran low on ink at around page 62 and changed the cartridge and was unable to print black since.
Can you send me the email on clearing the drainage tubes, I have tried Deep cleanse, Q-tip cleaning, replacing the cartridge twice. I do not know where else to turn.
Thank you for all the assistance you provide.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (1/7/14 9:43 PM) reply + / -
Nprinter,...Sad to say you just stressed your printer to the limit and then it popped. You printed 62 pages at the same time and each page continued to increase the temperature of the printhead. As the ink began to get very low there was insufficient ink to fill the head and it is that supply of ink that helps the head cool down after each dot it prints. When the ink runs that low each nozzle overheats and eventually one or more burn out and that is the instantaneous failure of the head. I will send you this email and when you reply to it with your email response please mention the MP530 and what has happened. I will send back a set of instructions to test the printer and isolate the problem.

Greetings Trigger,

After years of trouble-free operation, my MP530 has also stopped printing black. I ran two print head cleaning operations, but no deep cleaning operations. They made no difference. The nozzle check pattern is fine except for the PGBK row, which is completely blank. The PGBK cartridge was replaced recently and used successfully. I'd like to keep using the MP530 rather than replace it, so your assistance would be very much appreciated.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by trigger1937 (1/8/14 8:21 AM) reply + / -
jbr2014,...First we will need to test the printer and isolate the problem. I am sending you this short email and when you reply to it with your email I will be able to send you the files you need. Mention the MP530 and that it won't print black.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by andilynn (1/13/14 11:56 AM) reply + / -
My printer won't print black either. A few months ago, I changed the ink. Right after I changed it, it started acting up. It would print 2-3 pages just fine, then the ink would fade away on the 3rd or 4th page, and there wouldn't be any black at all. But if I let it sit for a few hours or overnight, I could print black again, but still only 2-3 pages. It did this for a few weeks, but slowly started printing less pages. Finally, it would barely print a full page before fading, and would have to sit for longer before I could print again.
I assumed this was just a bad ink cartridge, so I bought a new one and put it in. Now, it won't print black at all.
Does it sound like my print head is clogged? What is the best way to clean it? I've seen someone mention running water through it, that won't ruin it?

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by andilynn (1/13/14 12:28 PM) reply + / -
Ok, I found instructions on cleaning the print head, I just ran it under hot water. It didn't work. I still only have color ink, no black. I did a few deep cleans, changed ink just in case, did another deep clean, and still no black. Any suggestions?

I am sending you this short note and when you reply to it with your email response I will be able to send you the instructions to test and isolate the problem. It may not fix the problem but at least we can prove what the problem is.

Another hello to trigger1937. Send me a short note to reply to and I'll send data as requested. I've got an MP530 that only prints the top or only the bottom half of a line of text. About every 3/4" of an inch down the page it will print an entire line. When I print out a nozzle check, I only get the bottom half of the PGBK text, bars, and grid. I've cleaned and cleaned and have taken out the print head and soaked it until it appears to be "clean". No change.
I'm a long-a-go fixyourownprinter registered user but appears I have been purged from the system. I tried re-registering today but never received the acknowledging email to respond to. Hope we can make ends meet regardless and you can dispense your wisdom. Thanks, Bill

I'm having the same problem..MP530 won't print black..it stopped when I changed cartridges... just put another in and still not working, did the cleaning, taking out the print head, cleaning in hot water.. worked for one page, and then nothing.. when I do a test page, it comes out missing lines... It won't print every line from a page...
Thanks for your help

wjgill,--Rivkabf,....I am sending you this short note and when you reply to it with your MP530 info and describe the problem I will be able to send you the files that you need.

WJgill,...Typically when the head only prints either the top or the bottom of the black matrix in the nozzle test this is a clear sign that there is an electrical failure of that section of the head and this can not be fixed. However if all of the colored ink still prints you can continue to use the head to print anything by just selecting Photo or High resolution paper when you print.

Hi Trigger1937,

I have followed your comments to Janie and others in this blog. You suggested we attach a Clean Report from my MP530 printer. (Do I do that on your reply email?) It is over 5 years old and a short time ago began smudging black on my printed pages and then stopped. Shortly after that, I noticed weak and varied printing of the black color. I have run several cleans including the deep clean. Half of the PGBK lines are broken. My big black cartridge is new.

After your comments about doing damage by printing after this problem occurs in your 12/5/13 blog entry, I am concerned about continuing printing with it, even though my last attempt seemed to print normally when I used the standard setting.

Is it possible it 'corrected' itself? Should I refrain from further printing and attempt to clean it first?

I love this printer and would like to keep it in use.

Thanks for all you effort to help us out,

Bob blarson122@verizon.net

Hello Trigger, I cannot believe how long this thread has been going on! Wow!

Yesterday my husband brought home a PIXMA MX376 from work. It was purchased under a year ago and used only for 1 day, as a temporary measure when their usual printer stopped working. It worked perfectly. It was then placed back into the box and not used again.

I connected it last night and ran the print test. It was in black and white and the whites seemed very washed out/over exposed. Tried printing something else - still no colour at all and not even the black and white was very clear.

Ran the nozzle test, black printed perfectly, the rest of the page was blank.

Did a clean, it didn't change a thing.

Ran a deep clean, still no change.

Checked status of ink cartridges, computer tells me they are full.

Now I am stumped, which has lead me to this thread.

Please, if you have any assistance to offer me, it would be immensely appreciated.
I have NO IDEA what I can do to fix this.

Best,

Jade

Other colors work fine, but if I print a black text only, a blank page come out.

I tried also to remove head and perform a deep clean using a specific liquid, but problem is the same.

You are my last chance to fix it, can you help me?

I'm sorry to all of you that I have not responded. Somehow I lost all notification that people were posting so I've missed all of these last notes.

If you want to follow up on you questions I will send each of you a short email and when you reply to it mention your printer and some description of the problem and you could also attach a copy of your last nozzle test image. I will respond. If you need to contact me directly just click on my USER ID and then enter the info in the email you send to me.

Interesting and very long thread. I am trying to fix my fathers MP530. My problem is similar except light cyan doesn't print a complete solid bar and the dark cyan is blank. All other colors and black are fine. Black PGBK is warning me that it is running low however. I have replaced the cyan cartridge and have done several cleanings and several deep cleanings. I have been lucky with fixing my Brother printer (broken gear) and HP 2510 (scan bar would not park) so I'm hopeful I'll be able to fix this one as well. What do you suggest?

Can you please assist me with a copy of your instruction for my MG5350 multifunction printer that has just played up on me. When I print a photo it prints with a blue blotch. When I perform a nozzle test the BK cartridge return no colour with all other cartridges ok although perhaps a little light in colour. I have performed three cleans and two deep cleans for no improvement. Not sure if these two problems are related however from your posts in this forum the no black obviously requires my attention hopefully with your assistance.

Appreciate any assistance

I have a mp520. black won't print. I read thru thread. started by running hot water thru the printhead. then reinstalled. got a little black to print but was spotty. ran the deep cleaning about 6 times and now no black grid prints, so I'm thinking that by cleaning the print head - when I initially got a spotty grid to print, it was probably ink residue. now that that is used up, no more grid print. can you please send me instructions on how to unclog tubes or another solution...

I'm encountering the same problem with MP530. I used the printer for 3 years printing regularly and everything has been fine. Recently we were away and now it doesn't print the PGBK pattern when running nozzle test. I've done deep cleaning and replaced cartridge. How may I fix this problem? Thanks!

Hi Trigger,

MP530. Only limited maintenance these many years (I didn't know). Typically light use for both color and bw. But every now and then, I do a lot of color prints (4x6). I printed about 60 of these and then left on a trip. When I next tried to use my printer a couple weeks later, the fax report (only prints bw)was blank. I did get it to copy a tiny line-drawing in black once but after that, nothing. Always used Canon ink until recently when a friend assured me Supplies Outlet cartridges are fine. That last printing was probably the second or third set of those cartridges. I have run every cleaning function on the printer at this point, to no avail. I have test prints that I can scan and email if that helps. I like this printer and would like to save it, if I can. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hello,

I have the exactly same problem as gbcs001 had initially, but with a Canon ip4700. I cleaned the print head with water, alcohol and Windex many times, then bought a new one. The PGBK still won't print, there's nothing for it on the nozzle check but the other bars are perfect. From what I read on this thread and on other ones, it's the purge that's in trouble. Can I fix it by deassembling the printer and cleaning the purge unit?

Hi Trigger!
first of all, thanks for your generosity--I read thru most of the posts and really appreciate your helping people, sorta like Johnny Appleseed or something. I have similar issues, Canon MP520, wonderful printer, but won't print black, just cleaned out the print head and still no black. I guess purge unit is the issue, and would appreciate any help you can offer. I always take care of my machines when I know what to do, so if you can offer any maintenance tips I'd appreciate that too. Thanks!!

Not printing black for photos - prints purple instead, but it's a brand new canon cartridge

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by mmmppp (8/12/14 4:16 AM) reply + / -

FIXED!!

My MX 726 wasn't printing black (from the main cartridge - worked fine with all colours). The grid pattern didn't appear in print head nozzle checks so I knew it was something to do with the black cartridge.

So after a bit of reading, it appeared the print head was dried out/clogged. So i soaked a cotton bud in methylated spirits, then dabbed it on the circular sponge where the ink transfers from the cartridges to the printer.

Then I put the cartridges back in and redid the print test. Voila!! unclogged print head!

Printing lovely now :)

Hi Trigger and others who can help,
I've tried to directly send Trigger a couple of emails and can't tell if he's getting them, so I'll post my request to the forum and hope he or someone else responds:
Can someone please email me the diagnostic and cleaning instructions so popular for the Canon MP530 when it doesn't print the PG5BK black?
I have the same problem so many of you have. Went away for a couple weeks and afterward lost PG5BK black printing. After reading this thread, I removed the printhead and cleaned it using the only technique I can glean, running hot water and air through it. The printer's no worse (still prints all four CLI-8 colors), but it's also no better (still doesn't print PG5BK). I've only attempted printing nozzle test prints, so hopefully I didn't cook the printhead. I tried deep cleaning the PG5BK twice, and all that seemed to do was consume a lot of ink. Perhaps that means at least the purge drain is working (?).
I've had this multifunction unit for ~5 years, really like it, have only used OEM cartridges, and would very much like to squeeze a few more years out of it for my kids.
Thanks for your patience, trigger, and for helping so many of us.
Mungbean

Hello everyone,

My problem and its symptoms are exactly the same as those of many of you. Trigger doesn't seem to be responding at the moment, but apparently he has been sending his instructions (on how to clean the Canon MP530 and make it print black again) to people for the past three years, so surely he is not the only one who has them. Could any of you please forward them to me so I can have a go at it?

Thanks a lot in advance and have a wonderful day:)

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by halvarus (8/21/14 4:49 AM) reply + / -
Hi Lotte
I had the no-black problem. It seemed to be the purge unit, since after i rinsed the printhead in pure water, the black worked, then stopped working after a while.

I opened my MX870 to look at the purge unit, and found one rubber tube was loose. I reattached it and then the printer worked perfectly.

However, taking the printer apart took me an hour or so. Probably best to remove ink tanks first. before you disassemble the printer, UNPLUG THE POWER. I think the easiest way to take MX870 apart is to remove left panel (4 clips and 2 screws. The clips are two at top and two at bottom, at about same horizontal position, they r a bit tricky to find.) and right panel (same) and remove all cables to the scanner and lift the scanner (no clips, no screws). Then remove the top cover (about 4 clips). I removed the circuit board on the right side, and the steel plate it was attached to, but i think this is not necessary, the printer was connected to the bottom plate with 6 screws. If you take away the bottom plate and turn the printer upside down you can see the purge unit. u can check if any tubes are loose. U can also replace the purge unit, but i did not even need to take it out of the printer. You need a flashlight and maybe tweezers.

U need to detach the speaker.

Try first to try to figure out what is wrong. What does the nozzle test print look like? U can try to put some drops (5 drops) of water on the ink pads. They should drain away. If they don't, it's probably something wrong with the purge unit.

Alternatively, you can of course buy a new printer.

Good luck !

Hi,
This is in reply to a post on fixyourownprinter.com.
Would you please send the service Manual for Canon530 printer? My printer just shot off completely. I have tested all the power plugs and wall units. I even unplugged the unit for 1/2 hours. But I have absolutely nothing. No lights, no flashes.

Canon MP 530 no power. Nothing comes up on the display, no lights, etc. thinking it is the logic board. Also, where can you get the felt pads for this printer reasonably priced.

Hello Trigger, I have a MX870 that stopped printing from the PGBK tank. I cleaned the printhead with warm water and the nozzle check test grid then printed about 95 percent. I figured another cleaning might restore the function completely. When I removed the printhead for a second cleaning, I noticed an accumulation of ink around the black ink nozzles. After the second cleaning, the test grid failed to print at all. I tried another PGBK tank to no avail. I suspect I may have the same purge related problem discussed in other posts. I would greatly appreciate any info you could send to help me troubleshoot and repair the problem. I'm sending you an email with a copy of the nozzle test. Thank You!

Hello Trigger,
Like many others posting here my Cannon Pixma MG5350 PGBK catridge won't print black anymore. I have not used the MG5350 in a long while this summer. The 'Nozzle Check' shows no black grid pattern at all, the 6 colors are fine. The large black ink cartridge has ink. I've cleaned and deep cleaned the head several times with no improvement. The only thing I tried so far is replace the ink catridges but did not solve. I dont know yet if the printhead is ok ro not. Can you send me your service manual and advice please.
I use a CISS system on this printer sometimes but also use OEM catridges.
I am a technical engineer so should be able to fix myself.
Good to hear the head may be ok and just needs a major overhaul and cleaning. Thank's for your excellent advice online.

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by halvarus (9/26/14 7:30 AM) reply + / -
Hi Gerryk

I think it's unlikely that all black nozzles of your printhead are broken. It's more likely that your purge unit is broken. U can replace it or repair it. In my MX870 I had to reinstall a rubber tube that had loosened from the purge unit. After that I could print black. I guess also the tubes might be clogged or the purge unit completely out of order.

I wrote some instructions above, it might be helpful even if i don't have a MG5350.

Anyway, always try to determine what the problem is before starting to fix it.

If u want to check that the printhead is not clogged i suggest you put it in a glass of water over night. Dry a bit before putting it back in the printer, especially the electrodes which connects to the printer (on the back of the print head), dont touch the nozzles. The rest of the head doesnt need to be completely dry, as ink is anyway wet. The best is to use clean water. I used tap water several times without any problems. Latex gloves are not a bad idea.

Thank's Halvarus
Problem solved.
There was a 1 cm square piece of A4 paper sheet corner jammed under the printhead at the PGBK location.
I removed it and cleaned up the ink mess.
Printer working ok now.
I will write a seperate case about this under MG5350 heading.

Hello Trigger,

Can you please email me the service manual for the Canon MP600 when it doesn't print the PG5BK black?

I have the same problem as many of users have. I was printing and slowly lost PG5BK black printing. I performed all the cleaning nozzle and head options available to no avail. I tried deep cleaning the PG5BK lots of times, and all that seemed to do was consume a lot of ink.

I am not prepared to purchase a new printer and I like to see if I can fix the problem of the printer myself.

Thanking you in advance, trigger, for helping so many of us.

Regards, Nestor

Same problem as those above - Canon printer, PGBK ink won't print, even after numerous soaks and cleanings. Would like someone (Trigger?) to help troubleshoot. I suspect meghead is correct in that Trigger got tired of responding.

I wanted to close the loop & let you all know what solved my problem posted 8/13/14 with my MP530 not printing black PG5BK. What worked? Replacing the printhead. After trying countless washings, I bailed and tried a new printhead, Part No. QY6-0059, about $45 online. The 1st one I received must have been faulty, because I kept getting the dreaded U052 error code. The 2nd one, though, did the job, and now my MP530 works like new.

my cannon mg 5400 will print black if I scan an image but won't print from any computer file, it actually prints but it's grey. This is my 3rd cannon replacement printer. I'm guessing it's a software issue, but i removed and reisntalled all the drivers and it still doesn't work. Can anyone help?

Re: Canon MP530 won't print black by halvarus (10/23/14 9:12 AM) reply + / -
There are two ways for the printer to print black, either with the small black cartridge, or if this printer doesnt have that, mixing all colors makes black. Or the printer can print black with the bigger black pgment based cartridge (I don't know exactly which cartridges this model has).

So probably the black nozzles or the color (including non-pigment black) nozzles don't work.

Even if you choose printing greyscale, the printer might not use the black pigment cartridge. It also depends on the format of what you print. Try a nozzle test then you see clearsly which nozzles are clogged or broken.

It could be that your purge unit needs to be fixed. In the printers I know, the black and color nozzles have separate purge bads (the rubber cups under the nozzles in parked position.)

I wrote above how I fixed my purge unit. It could also be that your printhead is damaged. But the printhead usually don't break down for no reason. You can clean the printhead by putting it in clean water for some hours.

Try to find the problem before you start to repair it.

If you print/copy a picture in greyscale, the black pigment cartridge will not be used at all
