epson r800 headbanging by jaykelly (11/18/09 6:48 AM) reply + / -
hi - when i switch on, the print head of my epson r800 shoots to the side and bangs against the casing. Is this an easy problem to fix, because occasionally it doesnt.

Many thanks

Hi

Either clean and oil the silver carriage bar that the carriage runs along, this can dry out causing this problem. Or the encoder strip (the plastic strip running from one side of the printer to the other just behind the head) is dirty and just needs to be wiped off.

One of those should fix it.

hi paul - thanks. I took it apart a while back, cleaned the strip and oiled the bar, but it still does it. Do you think the plastic strip needs to be replaced perhaps? It is quite a strange and violent reacton for a printer, dont you think? ;-).

Is the strip running through the sensor on the back of the carriage assy?

yes it is. Im not sure of the strips function. Is it just a guide strip or is it magnetic or something? Im also not sure how unusual this problem is to the R800.

It's an optical positioning system. The lines on the strip are read by a light sensor/detector at the rear of the carriage where the strip passes through. If the sensor isn't counting the lines properly, it will slam into the end. Also check the carriage drive belt OK and correctly fitted.

Ah thanks for that. So theres no way the strip needs replacing unless it is so dirty that the lines are obscured from the sensor? Perhaps the sensor needs replacing. I didnt notice whether the lines were visible to the naked eye when cleaning it. Is there, perhaps, something that needs to be manually reset when putting the printer back together after dissasembling the head? I had the printer mechanism half stripped down via the aid of an r800 maintence manual - everything was put back together as stated.

I've replaced the sensor strip several times after a service and I simply put it back as it was. No resetting/adjustment required. I guess the carriage must 'know' where it starts and how many lines there are to the ends of the track.

what solution did you clean it with - if any? I cant remember if it can be put on the wrong way around or not.
