 | Canon pixma MP780 malfunction, need advice. by provobis (7/10/09 3:40 PM) reply | + / - | When powered on this MP780 makes a rapid, rapping or clacking sound (sounds like plastic gears that are slipping), the alarm led flashes, and the display reads "check printer, press (OK)". Of course any attempt to use printer functions fail with a two tone wail signal. The first time this actually happened was after cleaning heads and maintenance (print colors or tones were bad), and then attempting to print.
After pressing OK the rapid clacking sound is heard again and then with the same error display.
Does anyone have a clue or definitive knowledge of what's wrong? This MP780 is about two years old, has performed well and this problem has never happened.

 | Re: Canon pixma MP780 malfunction, need advice. by provobis (7/18/09 6:27 AM) reply | + / - | I am following up my "need advice " post concerning my pixma MP780, but must say I am surprised that no one has replied to my post. It would seem that someone, particularly the moderator, would have some remark, clue, or definitive answer to the problem I describe, especially since I have since found out that the problem is a common one evidently caused by excess ink buildup which has dirtied plastic gears which then slip causing the noise I described.
First, I paid for a "mp780-mp750 service manual" download from a web page I won't name. This manual is described as a service workshop manual but as a retired technician I recognized it as a sort of owner's manual that is useless for comprehensive repairs. The sort of help it provides is tantamount to asking you if the power plug is plugged in.
Finally I took my MP780 to a respectable business machine dealer/servicer who has since given me an estimate of just over $100 to service and/or repair it. It turns out the excess ink is the only problem. If I had known this I would have disassembled the machine myself IF I COULD HAVE FOUND A REAL SERVICE MANUAL DESCRIBING THE STEPS to get to the area of the problem. The so called service manual I downloaded has nothing even close to legitimate service procedures, photos, etc that any good shop manual would have.
Now that I know what this problem is, I intend to look for a authentic MP780 service manual. Anyone who knows where one may be found please reply.

Did any of you finally figure out how to clean the ink out or reset the error by any other means?

My problem is that the printer carriage is stuck and will not move. So far I have not gotten around to trying to fix it. I purchased a "Service Mnual", which contains some Canon service info and parts list. I do recall that it includes instructions on how to reset the ink messge when the waste ink absorber pad is alleged to be full. It also includes a bunch of pictures of the machine being disassembled, which I hope will help me to open the machine up and enable me to see what is wrong with it. If you search for a repair manual for a MP780, MP760 or MP750, you may hit the one I have from Bud Stansbury. At this point in time, I cannot recommend this one as good or bad, since I really have not used it yet. Fortunately, I am not under any pressure to fix my MP780, since I reactivated my wife's cranky, prone to errors and crashes HP G95 multifunction that the MP780 replaced.
Sorry I annot be more help. If you include your email address in your reply, I can update you when I get the printer to work.

 | Re: Canon pixma MP780 malfunction, need advice. by irha (10/9/09 9:07 PM) reply | + / - | Ok, so finally I was able to fix this problem with a great relief. I followed the excellent instructions to disassemble the printer from this German page (recommend using both google and bablefish translations, if you don't know German): http://www.druckerchannel.de
What I found is that the waste ink sponge is mostly white, except for the area that is far left (which is probably where the ink gets emptied). In any case, my problem wasn't waste ink tank, as resetting the counter didn't fix the problem. When I looked for any obstructions, all that I could find is a displaced sponge on the right side (not sure if it was obstructing something, or it got displaced while disassembling), and a small hair. I took care of them and assembled it back, and after a couple of cleaning cycles the printer is back to life now.

Going through nozzle cleaning etc. when the machine all of a sudden went dead! After reading different problems on the web, came across the lingo of "bridge diodes". Could this be the problem, can we fix this, recommend a parts place. There is absolutely no juice going to the machine.

My problem was completely different, the carriage was stuck with the power on. I suggest you repost your question on a new thread, since this one has been dead for months.
Best wishes, Charlie
