 | S820 Canon Printer by Meggers (2/13/09 10:02 AM) reply | + / - | I thoroughly cleaned the print head using isopropyl alcohol. Good prints then happened!!Then I received a notice about the waste tank and that it should be cleaned. I followed directions and still get the darn 7 orange lights blinking and all seems to be for naught. Can someone please, please tell me what to do. I will really appreciate your help and thank you in advance.Meggers

 | Re: S820 Canon Printer by Anonymous (2/14/09 7:48 AM) reply | + / - | The waste tank is a couple of sponges in the base of the printer. Every time you start the printer it runs a small amount of ink through the print head so fresh ink is ready for a print. After "x" prints the printer says this sponge is nearly full and the printer stops printing with an error message. You can reset the printer and it will continue to print, but the warning means the sponges need clearing of used ink - washing thr'. Its quite difficult to clean these sponges as the printer has to be taken apart. There are many threads on this site on reset procedure to be used. David

 | Re: Re: S820 Canon Printer by Meggers (2/14/09 8:04 AM) reply | + / - | Thank you for replying David. Just exactly what do you mean by saying "the printer has to be taken apart"? Following is what I finally did:
Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by chimp says (3/9/04 5:47 PM) +1 + / - The waste-ink counter for the BJ F900, F890, F700, F500, S900, S820, S750 and S520 are all reset in the same manner.
Turn off the printer. Press and hold the RESUME button, then press and hold the POWER button.
Release the RESUME button, then press and release the RESUME button two more times in succession. (youre still holding the POWER button during this). The printer mechanics will move momentarily.
You are now in Service mode.
Pressing the RESUME key will select a function; for example, pressing RESUME 4 times will select the clear waste ink counter function. The lamp will alternate color with each key press.
1. service/factory test printout, including ink sensor check 2. EEPROM info printout 3. EEPROM initialization 4. Clear the waste-ink counter 5. Printer model setting. (more selections beyond this- leave this alone)
After selecting mode, press the POWER button to commit the change, and return to the top of the function selection menu. Pressing the POWER button again turns off the printer for a restart. Does this make sense to you. My flashing lights are gone, but I'm no sure about the quality of the printing. Thanks again for responding. Meg

 | Re: S820 Canon Printer by Anonymous (2/15/09 6:56 AM) reply | + / - | You have cleared the error, but the sponges some time in the future will fill up with ink, and the ink will then flow into the base of the printer. The printer needs dismantling to get to these sponges, there are many plastic clips to be gently prised before the case can be removed, so you can get to them, and wash them out. Mine is a s630, and it took me 2-3 hours to do it.David

 | Re: S820 Canon Printer by Meggers (2/15/09 4:24 PM) reply | + / - | Hi David: You are dealing with an old gal here! Now, I have had this printer for about 3 or 4 years I do believe; and I cannot believe how beautiful the prints are at the moment. At this point in my life I do not believe I'm capable of doing anything more than I have done. I still have tons of ink for the S820 and guess I'll keep on trucking until all goes kerphooy! I don't know if it is allowed, but if I sent you my home address here in CT would you be able to explain to me in detail exactly what you mean. Wouldn't it be less expensive on my part to use up the inks I have; and then invest in a new printer. About 1 & 3/4 years ago I was so frustrated with the printing I wrote the President of Canon. Told him I had a Braun coffeemaker which cost me originally about $20. and it is still making the best coffee after 20 years and why in h... couldn't Canon do the same thing. Guess what, the President's secretary (a male) called me and told me a new print head was on the way to me. It lasted for just under two years. Maybe I should write again??Ha Ha Anyway David, get back to me when appropriate or you have the time. And I do thank you. Meggers

 | Re: S820 Canon Printer by Anonymous (2/16/09 6:33 AM) reply | + / - | I am approx 3000 miles away by plane in the UK. You can take the risk of printer ink going into the base of the printer, by using all your carts up, as the carts are usually always more expensive than a new printer. When you have used all the carts up, you could try and take the printer apart, you have NOTHING TO LOSE. David

 | Re: S820 Canon Printer by Meggers (2/16/09 8:41 AM) reply | + / - | David: You are so very kind to respond so quickly. Have been to England three times and at least a half dozen times to Scotland where my parents were born where I played a lot of golf. Also to Ireland on gofing trips, but never to Wales much to my sorrow. I believe I will simply follow your advice. I am privileged to get my cartridges very reasonably here and although they are not genuine Canon, they are guaranteed to produce which they have done admirably. Thanks again for your help, interest and kindness in responding. Meg
