Canon BJC 6200 by Ian Duxbury (8/20/02 3:47 PM) reply + / -
Printer refuses to print, error code shown by flashing light indicates waste tank full. Contacted Canon, who suggested I buy a new printer!!!!

Have replaced waste tanks (sponges!) but cannot reset printer. Have tried, but printer does not 'beep' as it's supposed to, but remains stubbornly silent.

Can anyone please tell me how to reset this thing and save me a lot of money?!

Thanks
Ian

You came to the right place for saving money, but I'll have to send you to Russ Wright's great Canon help site. You'll find the reset procedure there. http://www.magma.ca/~grethi/Canon_Drivers/index.html

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Ian Duxbury (8/21/02 12:54 AM) reply + / -
Thanks for the tip, Moe, but I've already tried this with no luck. How long should I have to wait for the thing to beep, if indeed it will?
Is this Canon's attempt at a self-destructing machine in order to boost sales of new ones.....Ho Hum....

Any further help will be more than gratefully received.

Cheers
Ian

Russ started hanging out on this board. Hopefully he'll see this and give you some advice. Nothing like getting it from the expert himself.

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Ian (8/21/02 2:12 PM) reply + / -
Thanks, Moe, I appreciate the mutual support, if nothing else!!

Well, after a long and arduous call to a manager at Canon, she gave me the following reset sequence:

1. Holding down Resume, press and hold Power
2. Holding down Power, release Resume
3. Press Resume twice, then release Power and wait for printer to then stop (presumably it goes through some carriage movement at this point)
4. Press Resume 3 times - orange light shows
5. Press Power again

Although similar to that listed on Russ' page, it doesn't seem to have any effect, except that my computer now detects my printer as a BJ-F620!

How hard can Canon make a simple reset?!

Cheers
Ian

Hi again, Moe,

I forgot to add that I haven't yet replaced the waste ink absorbers, as I'm waiting for them to be delivered. Do you know if this would make any difference, as I can't see any obvious sensors anywhere?

Cheers
Ian

Waste reset.

Waste Reset
1: Power off printer
2: Hold Resume button then press and hold POWER, the beeper will sound once.
3: Hold POWER and release RESUME
4: Press RESUME twice then release BOTH POWER and RESUME buttons
5: When the indicator lights becomes steady, press RESUME three(3) times. The indicator should be ORANGE.
6: Press Power to set data

Model Type reset

1: Power off printer
2: Hold Resume button then press and hold POWER, the beeper will sound once.
3: Hold POWER and release RESUME
4: Press RESUME four (4) times (Indicator should be GREEN)
5: When the indicator lights steady,

To set to BJC-6200 press RESUME one (1) times. The indicator should be orange.

To set to BJ-F620. The indicator should be green. (Do not press resume).

6: Press Power to set data

The waste is detect by a drop counter. The printer counts the each nozzle fired during a cleaning function , when it reaches the factory fixed value then the waste error

Did you really have a waste full error?

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Ian Duxbury (8/22/02 2:26 AM) reply + / -
Thanks for the reply, Russ.
Well, the ink absorbers were certainly ready for a change. The indicator light on top of the printer was (and still is!) flashing in the following sequence: Green, then orange (6 times) then back to green, 6 orange, and so on. From the error list, I understood that to be a waste full error, or have I misread it?
The other puzzling thing is that my printer stubbornly refuses to make any sound or beeps at all - is this right? Do I need to hold the buttons down for seconds, minutes, until it does, or what?

Any suggestions are, as usual, gratefully accepted.

Cheers
Ian

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Ian (8/26/02 7:02 AM) reply + / -
Hi Russ,

The revised error code listing you sent seems to indicate that it is, in fact, a user fault - presumably the light sequence refers to the fault listed at number 6 - BJ Cartridge error?

Is there any way in which I can check this out without replacing the cartridge(s) as it's an expensive way of finding out if that's not the fault?

Cheers
Ian

Not really, this is what a Canon service shop would have to do, ( but of course they would have a working test printhead ,I would hope)

Sometimes if your lucky ( I own a BJC-6000 same printheads) You can activate the STATUS MONITOR in the printer driver. Power on the printer and it may indicate a "missing" Printhead

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Ian (8/27/02 3:09 PM) reply + / -
Hi, Guys,

Well, substituting the scanner cartridge for the black cartridge seems to have got rid of the light indications, so I've ordered a replacement cartridge and we'll see if that finally cures it.

Just one thing left, though......even though I've gone through the model change procedure, each time Windows starts, it's detecting my printer as a BJ-F620. I've installed the 6200 drivers, and its properties tab shows all ok. Any ideas how to finally resolve this?

Cheers

Hi, Russ, Moe and all.....

Well, the new print cartridge (BC30e) has arrived and is installed, and all the colour tanks are full.

However, when I try to perform the waste reset sequence as follows:

After Step 4, when I've released both buttons, the printer reverts to flashing its indicator light in the sequence Green, six orange then repeats.

Having now spent over £33.00 in parts, but with no result, I'm totally baffled as to what's going on. I really can't afford to replace the printer, so am now getting a little desperate (not to mention despondant!!).

Any ideas?

Thanks

Ian

Hi Russ, and thanks for the reply.

Tried yet again, but after Step 4, the da*n thing just keeps on blinking (25minutes at the last count).

God, how I wish I lived on the 43rd floor, then I could at least have the satisfaction of sending it base jumping!!!!!

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Russ Wright (9/5/02 6:15 PM) reply + / -
without doing the service mode thing

what does the printer indicate
in the printer driver status monitor and on the printer

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Ian Duxbury (9/6/02 1:40 AM) reply+1 + / -
Hi Russ

When switched on, the printer goes through its normal whirrs and buzzes routine then the indicator on the machine goes into its green, six orange, green, six orange routine.

Starting up the status monitor results in the following message:

Service error 5100.
Cancel printing and turn the printer off and then back on.
If this doesn't clear the error, see the printer manual for more detail.

The following cartridges are installed.
Black / Colour

If I do shut down both the printer and PC and restart them, I get the same thing happening.

Thanks
Ian

Error 5100 ,based on my information is a home position error. meaning the printheads are not moving or not getting to or from Home position

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by interact (9/18/02 1:05 AM) reply + / -
Hi Russ

Thanks for the reply. The one thing that I don't understand about this is that, having now bought and installed a new black cartridge/print head (Canon BC30e) I'm still getting the same error indication. Taking out the black cartridge and installing the IS-32 scanner cartridge stops the error indicator and the printer can then be used quite happily as a scanner. Reinstalling either black cartridge results in the error indication returning. Does this mean that all's now lost?

Cheers
Ian

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Gijs van Oort (9/18/02 4:28 AM) reply + / -
I've got the same printer witht the light sequence, and a non-working printer. I still don't know realy sure what this error is indicating (BJ cardrige error or waste ink error). I called several times to the Canon helpdesk, and the different people I spoke thought different things. After that I called again with the only question: 'The manual is unclear about this, so what is the actual flashing sequence if a certain error occurs?' They couldn't answer that one either.

My own opinion is now that it is indeed a BJ cardrige error and not a waste ink tank full error (however, I believed the latter for about two weeks, so I spent hours cleaning the stupid thing and trying different reset codes...).
The weird thing is, that, since I tried to fix the problem, my printer came through the self test successfully twice, and I was even able to print something! But after one page it went back again is its old habit of [6x orange, 1x green].

This is just a hypothesis, but Ian, could it be that there is something wrong outside the print head, e.g. a connection wire to the print head that is not used for scanning? Please don't ask me how such a thing can break or what can be done about it...

btw, is it possible to use only the color cardrige (and leave the black outside the printer)? I didn't succeed, but may be someone with a non-broken BJC6200 could try it?

Gijs

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Ian (9/19/02 8:57 AM) reply + / -
Hi Gijs

Sorry to hear that you're having the same problems as me. I had actually thought about something being disconnected somewhere and have checked all the plugs, ribbon cables that I can find, but with no success.

I'm sure that you're as annoyed as I am that Canon just don't seem to care about their customers once they've handed over the money. It really shouldn't be this hard to either diagnose or correct a (probably) simple fault.

Let's just keep our fingers crossed that Russ or someone knows just what's going on with the printer.

Regards
Ian

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Ian (9/19/02 9:27 AM) reply + / -
Dear Gijs, Russ, et al......

I have just spoken to an extremely helpful technician at a company called Electroversal (01582 582023) who has told me that this problem is due to the E2 chip becoming faulty. This chip holds the programmed data for the printer, and if corrupt or faulty, it cannot be reset or written to - this is why the reset sequence fails to correct the indicator. So, short of paying £58 + postage + parts + tax, it appears that the printer is now useless.

Perhaps, if I were cynical, I might be tempted to think that this is a good example of built-in obsolesence. I mean, if you want someone to buy a new printer, you have to ensure that the old one doesn't last too long, haven't you?

Sorry if this is depressing news, guys, unless someone out there knows a) where to get this chip and b) how to fit it!!

Cheers
Ian

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Gijs (9/24/02 3:59 PM) reply + / -
that's really bad news... It would cost me 110 dollars to send the stupid thing to the repairs, and for less than 100 dollars I can buy a brand new printer... So why send it...? Maybe because the print quality was far better (and more constant) than any inkjet printer I've seen before. But even then; I don't want to give Canon that amount of money to solve their own design fault...
Seriously thinking about buying a new laser printer for about 300 dollars (any suggestions?).

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Ian (10/9/02 2:24 PM) reply + / -
I've recently received a mail from Rick, who has the same problem. My reply is as follows: If you go and have a look at http://fixyourownprinter.com/printer/new/5732.html, you'll see the whole
grisly story.

It appears that this is not an uncommon fault, and on telling the tale to a friend who works at BAE Systems, he said that this particular chip shouldn't actually go faulty, in fact, he used to use them in missile guidance systems purely because of their total reliability. He's actually never heard of one going wrong and suggested that these in the printer may be of inferior quality, hence the fault.

Perhaps we should draft something up to Canon to make them aware that these are not isolated incidents, but maybe indicative of a quality control problem? Let me know what you think.

Cheers
Ian

What do the rest of you guys think? Anyone else out there with this problem? Mail me at ian@duxburyilj.freeserve.co.uk if you have.

Hi again, guys.

Below is a copy of my recent letter to the MD at Canon UK. It'll be interesting to see the response - as soon as I get it, I'll post it here.

Cheers
Ian

16 October, 2002
Mr Lars-Erik Kennbert
Managing Director
Canon UK
HeadOffice
Woodhatch,
Reigate,
Surrey,
RH2 8BF

Dear Mr Kennbert,
I am writing to draw your attention to a problem with the Canon printer which I currently own and my total failure to obtain any kind of conclusive assistance from your customer support staff.
To explain, I bought a Canon BJC6200 inkjet printer just over eighteen months ago and was delighted with its speed and print quality. So much so, in fact, that I have actively promoted it to my friends and business contacts wherever possible and have also bought a Canon digital camera, believing the Canon name to represent quality and reliability. Imagine my dismay when, after average usage during this period, it suddenly refused to print and began blinking its indicator light in a repeating sequence of one long green light, then six orange, then repeating this whole cycle.
I rang the Service Centre number and spoke to one of your representatives, only to be amazed and dismayed to be advised that it would cost a minimum of £75 callout charge plus parts to rectify the fault and that I’d be better off buying a new printer. Given that I had paid over £150 some eighteen months prior and also use the printer as a scanner, I really did not want to pursue this as an option, neither did I feel that an item at that price should need replacement after such a relatively short time. With no further alternatives being offered, I resolved to try and find out what was wrong myself.
Internet searches revealed that the light sequence was apparently indicating a ‘Waste Tank Full’ condition, so I removed the waste ink absorbers in the base of the machine and cleaned out the purge tank as would be carried out during servicing of the printer. (I should explain at this point that I am fully qualified in PC construction, configuration and repair, and have serviced other printers in the past). Still, the indicator continued to blink out its relentless pattern. It was obvious that some kind of reset sequence then needed to be followed, so I again contacted your Service Centre to find out how to carry out the procedure. On explaining the problem to another representative, I was further disappointed to be told that they could not tell what the problem was and she then, as her colleague previously, tried to press the option of purchasing a new printer. When I asked about the reset procedure, I was met with a blank refusal to divulge the necessary information. It was only when I insisted on speaking to a Supervisor that I was passed through to her and she agreed to contact your technical staff to try to obtain this information.
To her credit, the Supervisor did call me back the following day and gave me what should have been the reset sequence, but on entering this into the printer, it had absolutely no effect whatsoever.
Another call to the Service Centre then resulted in my being told that the problem might be resolved once new ink absorbers had been fitted and I was then given the contact details for a parts supplier, from which I ordered new ink absorbers at a cost of over £11 – needless to say, fitting these again had no effect on the printer at all. So, now having been without the printer for a number of weeks, I was getting nowhere and it seemed that Canon simply didn’t care unless I was prepared to spend a substantial sum of money to replace a printer barely out of warranty.
Purely by chance, I discovered that the printer would still function as a scanner (using the IS-32 scanner cartridge which replaces the black cartridge), but replacing the black cartridge simply returned the printer to its faulty state. This suggested that the fault lay with the black cartridge, so in a last ditch effort to resolve the problem, I ordered and fitted a new BC30 cartridge at a cost of £26.75, but still no change.
A final call to the Service Centre found (at last!) a helpful representative who put me in touch with Electroversal, one of your authorised repairers. Unlike the majority of you Service Centre staff, the technician to whom I spoke was exceptionally helpful, and told me that this problem is due to the E2 (E squared) chip becoming faulty. This chip holds the programmed data for the printer and also counts the number of ink pulses generated over time, returning a ‘Waste Full’ error once a preset number has been exceeded. If corrupt or faulty, it cannot be reset or written to - this is why the reset sequence or changing of components fails to correct the indicator. So, short of paying £58 + postage + parts + VAT for a repair, it appears that the printer is now useless.
What does concern me, however, is a conversation I had subsequently with a friend who is a senior manager at BAE Systems. Having related the whole sorry saga to him, he was incredulous that this particular chip should fail. In fact, BAE use this type of chip in missile guidance systems solely on the basis of their absolute reliability. He had never known nor heard of one to fail, and his response was that he would strongly consider there to have been a failure in the quality control of this component, inferior ones being used. Postings on internet sites have also revealed other people with exactly the same fault on their BJC6200’s, so this cannot be regarded as an isolated incident.
To conclude, Mr Kennbert, my concerns are:
1. That a printer costing over £150 can be considered beyond economic repair after only eighteen months of average to light use, even when the scanner function of the machine remains unaffected. To replace the printer would also involve extra costs for the purchase of a new scanner were any other printer than another Canon be bought (would you replace a faulty item with one from the same manufacturer?)
2. That there appear to be very few repairers to where a faulty Canon printer can be taken for repair at reasonable cost.
3. That your Service Centre staff appear unable to diagnose the indications shown by the machine, neither are they equipped to offer useful advice other than to try to sell the customer a new machine.
4. The possibility that inferior components may have slipped through the quality control system, causing premature failure and unnecessary expenditure to customers.
5. Having now spent in excess of £37.00 in an effort to clear the fault, it still remains. (incidentally, I have also had to spend an additional £25.00 buying a cheap inkjet printer simply to ensure that I had some kind of printing facility).
6. The damaging effects to Canon’s reputation from a number of dissatisfied customers. As you will no doubt have noticed from the letter heading, I specialise in the Customer Service/Client Relationship Management fields and have done for over twenty years now, so I feel reasonably qualified to comment that perhaps something may need to be done to improve this area of the business.
Despite all this, I would like my 6200 repaired, given that it is now fitted with new ink absorbers and cartridge and to continue to use the printer as I am more than happy with its performance when working. I trust that you will see this as an opportunity to rebuild customer confidence and restore some credibility to the Canon brand.
I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Sincerely,
Ian Duxbury

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Gijs van Oort (10/17/02 9:57 AM) reply + / -
Beautiful letter you wrote, Ian! I really hope that you will get any positive response on it.

Me too, I liked the 6200 for its speed and quality. The epson I'm borrowing now, is noticably worse (and the ink is much more expensive because the tanks cannot be refilled).

But, to come back on the error we all seem to have: something is wrong, or at least very unclear.
When I called the (Dutch) help desk for the first time, they told me it was a problem with one of the printer heads; the waste ink tank was never mentioned. The second time I called, they said it was the waste ink tank problem; the printer head was never mentioned.
Cause of the confusion: the owners manual (I believe that help desk people are only there to read the manual and tell what's in there. This must be very useful for customers who have forgotten that they have a manual themselves).

The manual states (I checked three different languages, so it certainly was not an unclear translation):
"(1) When an error occurs, the POWER lamp flashes orange. The number of flashes indicates the cause of the problem. (...) Six flashes : BJ Cartridge not installed. (...)" and
"(2) The POWER lamp flashes orange and green alternately: Service error."
But we all have something in between: The light is not only flashing orange, but also green. So (1) is not completely true. The light is neither flashing alternatively orange/green, because we have many times orange, and one time green. So (2) neither is completely true.

(anecdote mode on)
It took me 15 minutes to explain this to the telephone help desk, and his intelligent answer was: "I can explain the 6 orange flashes for you. That is caused by a cardridge error. But I cannot explain the one green flash." He must have believed that he had solved 6/7 of my problem...
(anecdote mode off)

The page http://www.magma.ca/~grethi/Canon_Drivers/index.html tells us exactly what is what:
"The USER Error is indicated by blinking in orange for a certain number of times. After it blinks in ORANGE to indicate the error, it blinks once, long, in GREEN. This is repeated.
The SERVICE Error is indicated by blinking in ALTERNATELY ORANGE and GREEN for a certain number of times orange for a certain number of times. After it blinks in ORANGE and GREEN to indicate the error, it blinks once, long, in GREEN. This is repeated."
This can also be confirmed by manually push the printer head around when the printer is turned on. As soon as it notices that (it constantly checks its home position sensor), it gives the repeated sequence O G O G O G O GG (GG = long green), which is, according to the list on the mentioned page a 'home position error'.

As far as I can see, there is no reason at all to assume that the 'O O O O O O G' (Cardridge problem) message has anything to do with the 'O G O G O G O G O G O GG' (waste tank) message.

My conclusion: This is NOT a waste ink issue in any way. Therefore, it would be really strange if resetting the waste ink counter would solve the problem! So what can it be? I really don't know.
The strange thing is that, since my printer broke, it printed a page correcly twice. Also, it always cleans the heads correctly (my brand new waste ink absorber has already been completely soaked with $$$'s of ink), so the connection from the printer electronics to (at least one of) the printer head ink channels is okay. The printer had never failed before, so it cannot be a cable or so that gradually became worse (the failure was too sudden).

Would it be a software issue? Maybe then it can be solved by trying to get a software (for the printer, not a driver) update from Canon. Are they still manufacturing this type of printers? If so, they probably do have newer versions of the software. By the way, I'm convinced that bypassing the failing check (whatever it may be) solves the problem completely. Apart from that stupid check, there is nothing wrong with my printer (judging from the fact that it made two perfect prints while it was broken).

What do you think? Do you agree with my belief that it is not a waste ink problem? Would there be any software updates that might solve the problem?

Btw, how many of you have already given up repairing it? I'm about to give up and buy a new printer...

Good luck to you all!

Gijs (The Netherlands)

Well, Guys, I appear to have stirred up something here - today, I received a call from Canon's Service Dept who are now very concerned that I was not happy with my printer and my attempts to have it repaired. They are going to send out an engineer on Friday to assess the machine and will then decide on what course of action to take. Unlike my previous contacts with them, they are going to waive the normal £75 visit charge on this occasion. Looks like Mr Kennbert's interest has certainly proved to be a motivating factor!
Cheers

Ian,

Have you already got more news for us...? I'm still stuck with the broken printer (haven't taken any action yet), and probably I'll buy a brand new one tomorrow.

If I've got time then I'll write a complaint letter to the Dutch service center, hoping that they will repair the printer for much less than $113,-.

Hope to hear from you,

Gijs

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Ian (11/9/02 2:43 AM) reply+1 + / -
Hi Gijs,

Sorry for the delay in posting anything new, but there have been developments.........following an engineers visit (during which he decided that the main board was faulty - yet another different explanation!), see the following extract from a letter recently received from Canon:

"In view of the surrounding events I would like to offer a replacement i550 printer, which is an upgrade to your BJC6200. This will be in full and final settlement of any further claims related to this issue and therefore, I would appreciate it if you could complete and return the acceptance on the enclosed copy of this letter, retaining this copy for your records, within the next fourteen working days. Upon receipt of your acceptance the necessary arrangements will be made for the i550 printer to be despatched directly to you."

This letter is signed by the Customer Liason & Helpdesk Manager. Although I returned the acceptance on the 31st Oct, nothing has yet arrived, but querying the delivery with Canon yesterday revealed that the order was processed yesterday and that the printer should be with me next week.

So, although I now appear to be happy, where does that leave the rest of you guys? Well, I shall be sending the following letter back to Mr Kennbert once the new printer has arrived:

Dear Mr Kennbert,
Further to my letter of the 16th October, I am writing to express my most sincere thanks for the speedy resolution to my problem with my Canon BJC6200 printer. Following the visit from your engineer, during which a faulty main board was diagnosed, the replacement printer has been delivered, installed and appears to be working satisfactorily.
Your intervention is very much appreciated, as I am sure that you have had far more pressing matters to attend to. All too often, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that really excellent Customer Service begins when problems or failures arise and it’s often how speedily and effectively these are resolved which determines a customer’s perception of a company’s quality. Given my previous experience of Canon and its products, you will understand why I was both surprised and dismayed to receive so many different answers to the same problem, with no real resolution in sight. Suffice it to say that the level of service I received following your involvement was that which I would have expected originally from Canon, and has certainly restored my faith in your commitment to your customers.
Whilst this has proved to be an agreeable resolution in my individual case, might I respectfully suggest that you or your Customer Service manager may wish to visit :
http://fixyourownprinter.com/printer/new/5732.html
where you will find postings from four other customers who have experienced exactly the same problems as I have had with this particular printer. I am sure that sympathetic contact with these customers from either your office or european counterparts will prove equally as effective in restoring Canon’s reputation with them and their contacts as it has with myself.
Again, many thanks for all your help in this matter.

Sincerely, Ian Duxbury.

I would really hope that this will result in your being contacted and your printers sorted as well. Given the response that I've had, I really can't see that Canon won't help, as they have shown themselves to genuinely be concerned with Customer Service. If not, please feel free to copy and modify my original letter to contact your own service centre. Let me know if it all works for you too.

Cheers
Ian

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Gijs van Oort (11/9/02 7:55 AM) reply + / -
Hi Ian,

Thanks for your fast response! It is great to hear that Canon cares about (at least one of) its customers!
Today I have investigated a dozen of printers on the internet, to find me a new one. And believe it or not: The only printers that suit my needs are (again) Canon printers (either a S520 or an i550). The sad thing is that these new printers are more expensive than my 6200 was 1.5 years ago (both are about $200,-). The good thing is that they use the same ink tanks as the old 6200, so I don't have to throw my spare tanks away. In fact, if the shop would have picked up the phone so they could tell me if they had the printer in stock, I would have had a new printer by now.

I really hope that Canon will contact me (even when I already have bought a new printer; maybe they can send me a part of the cost of the new printer...). If they don't, I think I'll write a letter to them myself. Ian, do you suggest to mention your case and this forum thread in that letter?

Gijs

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Ian (11/9/02 8:56 AM) reply + / -
I certainly would mention the case and this thread - there's no logical reason at all why customers in different parts of the world should receive any different treatment!

I'm told the i550 should be with me towards the end of next week, so I would hope that you might be contacted soon after that. Hopefully, it may stop you from incurring unnecessary expense in having to buy a new printer.

Cheers
Ian

Hi,

very interesting thread!!!!
Im another one with the same problem,1 green and 6 orange LEDs on my BJC-6200. The "waste reset"-procedure also wont work. The way to solve this problem is a complete reset of the printer:

Hold Power and Resume and then connect the powercord. After this release Power and press it again. Then release both, Power and Resume. The printer shuts down and after power on the 1-6-failure is done! Now you can reset the waste error and change the printer from BJ-F620 to BJC-6200.

My problem after this procedures was another. The printer "prints" but there was nothing on the paper. It shows like the reset procedure has destroyed the printheads. After a change with 2 other print heads (from a friend) and a rechange to my old heads all works fine. Im sure, that after the complete reset it was necessarily to re-inizialise the heads.

Now my printer works fine-looking forward to the next 6-1-error.

Rebewslin

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Gijs van Oort (11/16/02 4:25 PM) reply + / -
Hey Rebewslin (and others)!

Two days ago I finally decided to give up, and I bought a new i550 as a replacement of my 6200... Now I read your 'reset' procedure, and because I still had my 6200 printer here, I decided to try it too. I've got exactly the same results except for the friend-part: I don't have any friends with the same printer... So I'm now stuck with a printer that prints blank pages. After playing with it for a while (trying to print test pages and randomly resetting and taking the printer heads out and in) it gives the 6-1-error again. General resetting the printer (after it has been unconnected for >30 seconds) solves the 6-1-error again.

So what I want to know is: what exactly have you done there, and would it be possible to do it without any 'spare' parts? Particularly: have you put your (faulty) print heads into your friend's printer? Would it be possible that that printer resetted the printer heads? (are there any electronics inside the head that could be reset?) Did that printer work with your printer heads?
Did your printer print with your friend's printer heads? And also: how long did you do 'nothing' with your printer/heads after you did the general reset? (because if the printer heads or the printer has some kind of 'memory', it could be useful to let it alone for some time, so it can 'forget' its status).

I have not yet unpacked my new printer, so I hope that you can help me with my problem... Maybe I can bring my new printer back to the store then (saving $ 200,-)...

Hoping to hear from you soon,

Gijs

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Gijs van Oort (11/18/02 7:39 AM) reply + / -
Hi all,

I just got an email from Rebewslin:
====
Today my printer gave up again. 6 orange and then 1 green... The same problem. Probably the error has nevertheless never been correctly eliminated... I have called Canon today, they says it is a hardware-problem. A local Canon-service partner here in Berlin says it costs 50 EUR or more... No way to get an info what they want to do with my printer...
====

That's a pity, it nearly seemed to work... Well, I guess it is now time for me to really give up (for the seventh time or so...) and install my new printer. I will keep reading this thread, and if some one has another solution, I will certainly try it on the old 6200 (just in case the new i550 stops printing :o) ).

Thank you all,

Gijs

Hi Guys

Well, the new printer has arrived and been duly installed, so my letter to Mr Kennbert will be on its way tomorrow morning.

Obviously, I'm happy with the end result, but sincerely hope that my pointing Canon in the direction of this thread will help to get your situations resolved happily as well.

Thanks for all the sugestions and support.

Cheers

I have a Canon S400 and have the same bloody problem! It will not print black although I have placed 3 brand new black cartridges in (thinking something was wrong with that specific cartridge). Although all of the ink tanks are full, it shows an out of ink message.

I purchased this printer in April of 2001 and have barely used it, using it only for reproducing photos. I also have an HP Deskjet 600 on which I do most of my correspondence printing.

I've written to the online techs at Canon about this and have never received an answer. Now what?

How do I open the printer to empty the ink tank?

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Lurker (12/6/02 11:49 PM) reply + / -
Sure glad I found this thread before I spent $100
for new cartridges for my BJC-6000. Same error
with 6 Orange and 1 green. It also beeps 6 times
and then stays orange and is dead. The User's
manual is very confusing about the beeps and lights
which leads you to "Cartridge Not Installed" or
"waste tank full". Neither of these are the real
problem. Canon has sold us a defective product.
This printer has worked for about 2 year and then
BEEP, that's it.

Canon will never get my business again. They're DOA.

Hi Lurker

Guessed from your message that you're outside the UK - can only suggest that you get in touch with the head guy for your area (please feel free to use/amend my original letter to suit) and refer him to this thread. I would suggest that it would be very hard for them to justify treating customers in different countries/areas differently.

Hope this helps
Ian

Hi, All!!!
I have a big problem!!!
My printer Canon BJC-1000 does not work at all!
It display the message that the ink tank is full.
Please help me!
What can I do with?
Thanks

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Yottaforce (12/26/02 7:27 PM) reply + / -
Could you be more specific with your problem? The message saying that the ink tank is full probably has nothing to do with the problem, since that is a good thing. But does the printer just not turn on at all? Does it turn on normally but doen't print? Does it turn on with beeps and/or flashing lights? What??

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Iren (12/29/02 11:33 AM) reply + / -
Hi, Yottaforce!
Thanks for your attention!
My printer turn on normally but doesn't print. Printer's driver indikates in the Massage Box that the ink tank is full and doesn't print when I want to print any file. Printer doesn't beep or flashing lights cause it hasn't beeper or lights.

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Yottaforce (12/29/02 6:28 PM) reply + / -
Do you mean WASTE tank?

If you actually do mean INK tank, are there any internal engine tests?? If you don't know, try looking in the manual or at Canon's site.

(Sorry to be a smartie pants on my previous post. I just couln't resist....)

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Iren (12/30/02 8:19 AM) reply + / -
Yes, I mean WASTE tank.
Do you know how I can reset the Waste tank's counter?
The printer prints nothing. It hasn't any engine test, only head's nozzle check, which doesn't operate.
Thanks

I am very curious to find out what could be the real cause of this error (6 orange flashes followed by a long green flash) for Canon BJC6200, so does anybody out there has any ideas what is the problem(apart from the obvious fact that this is a serious design fault)?

Re: Canon BJC S450 by Darshell (3/2/03 9:04 PM) reply + / -
I have had my s450 printer for approx. eighteen months. I have the same problem with the 1-6-1 green and orange flash which states that there is no ink cartriage installed. I took the printer to the repair shop and he reset the printer and it worked for about 2 weeks. I took it back to the repairman and he has informed me that my printer has had it and he cant seem to figure out what is wrong with it. I too have had a previous Canon printer(4100.) I am really shocked that they would practice such business ethics. Even though they have tried to satisfy a customer, the problem still exist with other customers and other models of printers. I am afraid to purchase another Canon printer.

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by D (3/3/03 8:39 AM) reply + / -
At this point, after phoning Canon for a resolution and trying to fix this bloody S400 myself, I've decided to phone the company that sold it to me and refer them to this board. Perhaps if these companies (Office Depot, Office Max, etc.) know what a shoddy piece of workmanship these printers are, they'll stop carrying them in their inventory.

Also, I'm packaging mine up and returning it to Canon, addressed to the Corporate President. It's worthless to me now and I don't care if I ever see the worthless thing again. Let them deal with it.

I will never purchase another Canon product again, printers or otherwise. 'Nuff said.

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by Don (3/4/03 8:46 PM) reply + / -
For what it's worth, this thread sounds just like a repeat of my problem. My BJC 6200 printer is about 2 and a half years old and until recently was printing beautifully. Then a couple of months back the print quality went bad, then it totally stopped printing. I didn't realise the flashing yellow & green lights were a code, so I didn't count them, but it was certainly something like 6 yellow then a green, repeated continuously. I'd paid for an extended 4 year warranty, after a previous bad experience with an HP inkjet, so I took it in for repair. The USB port had died ages ago, so I thought I'd get both issues fixed.

The repair shop told me the print problem was faulty heads, but the USB issue required a board replacement. The repair cost was higher than the replacement cost (they've offered a Canon S520 instead). I'm not familiar with the S520 but assuming it's equivalent quality & speed I'm happy for now. But I AM seriously worried about the quality issue on these Canons.

Re: Canon S300 by Anonymous (3/11/03 10:10 AM) reply+1 + / -
My Canon S300 has started printing black very faintly even though I replaced the black ink tank. It prints color fine. What could the problem be?

Re: Canon BJC 6200 by D (3/11/03 12:48 PM) reply+1 + / -
While I was shopping for a new printer the other day, I happened upon a Canon Rep at the store. I yanked his ear and told him I had a few questions! Told him about the problems I've had and of this website.

Here's what he told me: He said that just going out and buying a new ink cartridge wasn't going to fix the problem. He held out to me a new shrink-wrapped container of ink cartridges complete with the ink jets (in the S400, the green plastic container that holds the ink cartridges). He said that the entire package at the price of $48.00 a pop had to be replaced.

I turned down this so-called "fix" because as I told him, I didn't want to throw good money after bad. I also asked him where in any Canon product information did it say to replace the whole damn thing. He said it wasn't in there. Oh? Are we just supposed to channel that info?

So, you all might try this fix. The ink cartridges alone cost $47 but the Canon rep said that for an extra dollar you should buy the entire container into which they fit ($48.00). So, folksies, we thought we were saving money on the individual ink cartridges? Not so. You need to replace this bloody thing every time you run out of ink at a cost of $48!

I bought an Epson Stylus CX5200 at Gateway, got a thorough demo, called the salesman back when I got stuck on the install, the salesman talked me through the install and was absolutely terrific! I will never again buy any computer products from Best Buy, Amazon, Office Depot, Office Max, Staples, etc. etc. etc.

I have a 6500. Had the whole six beep thing going on. Definately the waste ink tank scenario as far as I can tell. I did a simple reset from an ealier post...

"What also helps from time to time is just press and hold the buttons, unplug the power cord release the buttons, press them again and plug in the power cord (I personally don't see why you would have to release the buttons but hey... this comes from a friend who works for canon..) Keep me posted if this works... "

So far it has worked. Printer is working fine. Before I did that I went to the Canon site and downloaded the latest version of the driver. That didn't fix the problem. The above reset did. Not looking forward to opening up the machine and cleaning the sponge but I will if I have to. The 6500 is the A3 color printer, prints fast and I like it.

Hi guys, I've read your info with real interest as I have exactly the same snag with my BJC6200 - six orange followed by one green, no print and the scanner seems to work fine. I would like to say that although your threads were posted some time ago Canon have apparently done nothing about this fault in their production of these machines. Happy as they are to take your cash for ink cartridges I beleive your original concern Ian that they have failed to resolve this issue effectively.
