I recently bought a laserjet from Craigslist/Dallas and had an Officejet D145 thrown in for $20. Wife wasn't crazy about it--too much computer junk, and obviously, since it didn't work, it must be junk. (Had been sitting, but seemed functionally fine, just wouldn't print.)
I figured, what the heck, I might learn something. I ordered two sets of refilled cartridges and waited.
When they got here, I dropped them in and fired it up. Immediately got the print head bad on all but one. I tried cleaning the heads with alcohol, with limited success. Then I did a search and ran into the articles on THE FIRST GUIDE IN TAKING BACK YOUR HP OFFICEJET! Loved it.
I just spent about 3 hours rinsing out print heads and printing test/comparison pages. Worked like a charm. No error messages, no streaking, and no banding. I found the hot water in a thin, steady stream through the screen, and occasionally squeezing the sides of the print head seemed to work exceptionally well. If you set the print head in a small jar lid, the edge will hold them in position to sit in water/ammonia.
I saw the chip problems with outdating/out of ink, and remembered there was a company that provided replacement chips for #10 cartridges, wonder if they do for #14s, too??(Have a HP 2500c, as well.)
As for the wife...I'm probably giving the D145 to her. She needed a fax that did feeding as well as flatbed. However, I could use a copy of the original software....hint, hint....
