STEP BY STEP reset imaging drum Q3964A in HP 2550 by Anonymous (1/16/07 2:11 PM) reply + / -
This is to clarify the procedure to reset the Q3964A imaging drum that is no longer working in Laserjet 2550 2550L 2550Ln. This may be somewhat of a duplicate posting, if so, sorry about that and credit goes to whoever first discovered it. This posting may help some people who were confused about this procedure or wheather it works at all.

As you know, the blinking image light for imaging drum indicates that the drum is at the end of life (according to HP) and the printer will not print. Actually, what it means is that HP is running low on CASH and is expecting you to pay for their next boat payment. The drum is probably plenty useful, and shouldn't you decide when the print quality is no longer acceptable to YOU, instead of some chip inside the cartridge with an arbitrary counter number?

Here is the procedure that will work if performed correctly (it may take several tries because timing of button presses is crucial). This procedure revived completely dead 2550L with flashing imaging drum light.

READ THROUGH THE PROCEDURE BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND IT! Of course, as a standard disclaimer, use at your own risk. You are responsible for the consequences, blah, blah..

1) Ensure that all printer cartridges and the drum are installed

2) Printer - OFF with power button

3) GREEN GO BUTTON - HOLD

4) POWER BUTTON ON

5) The 3 lights above the green go button will go ON and then OFF (this will happen quickly, under 10 seconds, but may vary)

6) AS SOON AS THE LIGHTS ARE OFF - RELEASE GREEN GO BUTTON

7) IMMEDIATELY - PRESS AND HOLD RED CANCEL BUTTON

8) IMMEDIATELY - PRESS and HOLD CARTRIDGE SELECTION BUTTON

9) IMMEDIATELY - RELEASE both RED CANCEL BUTTON and CARTRIDGE SELECT BUTTON

That's all she wrote.

Just a small clarification for steps 5 and 6. The ORDER in which lights go off is not important. What IS important, in step 6, that all three lights betwen the green GO button and the red CANCEL button are OFF. As soon as all THREE of them are OFF, and it will happen QUICKLY, proceed with step 7.

Tried to follow steps, then received my first error report which said no data in NVRAM debug file...............now what?

Didn't work for me. Tried 4x just to make sure I was following directions correctly. Sorry!

Re: STEP BY STEP reset imaging drum Q3964A in HP by Anonymous (7/20/08 11:03 AM) reply + / -
also tried this and at first it did not work...
BUT, then for Step 9 I only released the last two buttons once printer intitializing was completed (and it kept rotating through toner cartridges). Then it worked perfectly :-) :-)

Bye

I've tried doing both of these steps. I've got to the point where just the Imaging Drum light is blinking...

Any other suggestions???

Yeah I have tried this one about a dozen times, using all the tips shown and have got to where you got! Did you ever get any further?
What seems unclear in the instructions is for how long you should hold down the buttons, whether they are supposed to be held down together or in sequence, or what....

Re: STEP BY STEP reset imaging drum Q3964A in HP by Anonymous (6/1/09 4:02 PM) reply + / -
I've tried it a half-dozen times with no success... Any other tricks or things I should know that might help? I'd like to see it work again before I spend another 200 on an imaging drum...

This worked for me. But all I did was the green button then turn power on and hold GB until all lights go off and THEN the red button down for about 20 seconds. OP I owe you 182 dollars but will, "THANKS A LOT!" do? ;)

Is there a similar step by step for resetting the toner chips? I've got four "dead" toners here that I'd love to reset.

Used every combination and permutation or the procedures described in this and related articles, and didn't work for me.

Guys,

the easiest way id to rip off the counter chip from any used colour cartridges which I presume we have many laying around and replace it on the imaging drum.

Works fine for me.

The French person said:
It is as easy as saying 'hello', no need for buttons or anything else, just find a friend who also has an (he did not state empty or otherwise) imagaging drum and replace your empty one with theirs.
In HP tool box, it will say that the drum is not recognised, nevertheless it will still print perfectly.

For the 4 toners:
There is a small piece of glass on the back of each toner if you open the cartridge it is glued with superglue in the colour of the toner. Here you can refil the toner until the the printer dies (wears out)

From me: Maybe if one has a spare drum one could keep changing them until completely exhausted.

The pressing of the buttons did not reset my printer either, and I tried several times with several combinations.

I bought a very cheap epson SX115 to replace my 2550 because the drum is reading empty, but having seen the prices of new cartridges for the SX115 which have this new chip counter on them, I am going to fork out for a new drum and see if I can refill the toners as the French guy suggested as I am miles and miles away from a refill center. I have tried the so called 'compatible' replacement cartridges for the SX115 and they did not work, and the cost of genuine epson cartridges is about £5 each, which considering the amount of ink they hold, it makes the 2550 look a better alternative.
I think in the long run it will be more cost effective for me to buy a new (not OEM) drum, my current one has lasted me nearly 6 years, not bad going really.

This morning when I turned on my printer, it again had the flashing image drum light- trying the steps again, but it's not working.... also trying variations as others had suggested! Really frustrating... I wish I hadn't turned it off!

Check your local remanufacturer, for chip that sits on the back of the drum, and make sure they have a warranty with it.
The drums are usually good for awhile longer,
if its a drum/toner cartridge, you will run out of toner!

I've gone through the procedure 6 times... appears easy enough, however drum light still flashes. Question: when you say all lights go off... are you including the Green Go light as well? It takes another 1 or 2 seconds to go off.

I'm in the middle of a critical print job and cannot wait 3-5 days for delivery of another drum. I live in a rural area... no suppliers near by.

Thanking you all for any help you may provide.

If you have a used toner cartridge even if empty, remove the chip from the toner cartridge and move it to the drum and it should then work.

I was able to switch the chips from one of my old toner cartridges and move it to the drum as suggested. THIS DOES WORK. It makes the printer think that you are using an non-HP replacement drum and you only have to push the check to allow. THIS DOES WORK.

Thank you Brian, I appreciate you taking time to respond...

I ended up having to purchase a new one due to all other advice failing. I will try this when the new one fails.

Best Regards

Thanks Yogesh...

I did purchase the chip along with all the refill kits... none have worked... wasted a lot of money...the company I purchased from has been nice enough to send a second set up chips... still to no avail.

Printer has been "down" now for over a month... about ready to toss it out.

Thank you again for your response.

Dear ssMurmaid,

I have a printer cartridge refilling store, I have provided few Chips and all of them worked for Hp 2550 Image Drum.

I mean to say you should get the right chip in order to function.

Re: STEP BY STEP reset imaging drum Q3964A in HP 2550 by ssMurmaid (5/14/10 7:40 AM) reply + / -
Thanks again Yogesh...

I purchased a new drum so that is not the issue at this time. It's the yellow now that I have filled and replaced the chip on. However, the printer light still flashes indicating that it reads it as being empty.

Where is your store located and do you have a website? Do you sell online?

I also have an hp2025 color laser printer... are there refill kits for this one yet?

Thank you for you kind responses.

Replacing the chip on the drum, with one from a toner cartridge worked for me; after turning on and off.

Pushing the buttons in sequence didn't do the job for my HP2550, but i did find an easy solution:

take the drum out and get a black marker and put two vertical lines through the barcode on the drum. Either the printer then misreads the barcode or can't read the barcode, but eitherway it then works when you put the drum back in.

This worked for me after about 15 tries. To finally get it to work I did the following

power off printer

hold down go button (Big Green Button)
powered printer on
3 lights above green button showed
orange green green

once all three lights went of, I immediately let go of the green button and held down the two top buttons (Cartridge with three color dots on it and the orange button underneath)

Hold down the button until the printer stops cycling. Once it finishes, all the lights on the panel should be on and stay on.
at this point you let go of the buttons

All lights should still be on.
Press the orange button one time. The printer will go thorugh a startup cycle twice. wait and be patient as this may take up to a good 5 minutes or more. Once done, it shoudl start printing again.

The only real difference between the original instructions and what i did are I held the two buttons in till it finished cycling and then let go
Then I his the orange button one time and waited while it cycled.

Hope this helps someone out there.

Reset Drum for 2840 using oldprint cartridge chip by GerryrigHPdrum (3/2/12 8:10 PM) reply + / -
Just pull off a chip from a spent toner cartridge and put in where the drum chip set was. Very easy to do. The machine thinks it's not a HP drum. So What! You press the Check once and it'll continue through its start-up cycle. It'll continue to say that your drum is not a HP drum, but who cares? You just saved $220, and it prints great. Worked 1st time. It took 8 minutes to do and much of that was waiting for the start-up cycle to complete.

Changing the chip out with an old toner totally worked!!! Yay!! Thank you so much for the helpful suggestion. You just saved me so much time and effort and money. Appreciate you!

Thanks for all the hints. These got me to a solution also for my problem: The imaging drum light was not flashing but constantly on.
I first tried the green-button-then-red-button solution - then (due to lack of old toner cartridges) put a stripe of TESA on the contacts of the imaging drum chip - and tried the green-button-then-red-button solution again - and then removed the TESA again, and now: the printer works again ;-)
