I have workaround for the empty tank issue: - buy or borrow another not empty tank - place it in - start the printer - it recognises the "new" tank - turn off the printer - put back the old, empty, but refilled tank - turn on the printer - print something - it will pop up a dialogue window saying "The ink level of the black/color tank cannot be determined. The ink level determining function will be disabled for the black/color tank. If you want to continue printing without this function press the Start button on the printer." - Press the Start button on the printer and ignore the button 'Cancel Printing' appearing on the dialogue window. - The dialog window disappears.
You can print your refilled tank as many times you want from this time.
When you go to 'Printers /Canon /Properties /Maintenance / Printer Status / Ink Information' it says that the ink level measuring function has been disabled for: black [40] / color[41]. You can ignore this this message, the printer will work perfectly without this stupid function.
OK. I forgot to add "- turn on the printer" line before this one: "- put back the old, empty, but refilled tank"
The point is that the printer driver will pop up a dialogue window saying the it turned out that bloody ink level sensing function, and after it you can print with the old refilled tank.

Take down the main case that covers the mechanical and cartridges area(it's the one that covers actually all),and when it parks the carriage (watch out for the switch of the scanner bed,i mean the one that turns on when you lift up the upper scanner bed,you will find it on the left side attached to metal chassis, and make sure it's switched on-put around it some duck tape, then you can easily pull out the black cartridge, but of course the printer will have to be SWITCHED OFF!!! GOOD LUCK!!

I' refilled my MP 160 many times, someones in a refiller store and other at home, but now, the printer often doesn't turns on if I' ve turned it off. Insted of it, it keeps the alarm led (the upper yellow one) and doesnt] respondo, for days and days, the only way to stop it is taking th printer out of the electricity, but one I put the power wire/cord back it turns the same light on, over and over again. But if I keep the printer out of the electricity for several days, one puted beck the power cord/wire, it works normally!!!!
But I cannot turn it of again, never and never,
What can I do to stop this problem???!!
Thank you!

Secondly, to run the software your printer has to be in service mode. Do that by - unplug cable - press and hold "power" button - plug cable - press "resume" and release - release the "power" button At this stage, your computer will detect a new hardware
Run the software.
Good luck!
I have successfully reset my cartridges using this metode.

I honestly can't believe anyone would go to all this trouble for a $50 printer. Just go buy a new one, but better yet, buy a better one with more quality and features like a MP600 or MP830 or a MX700, but for a MP160? naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I'm in Brasil too Iporã, and the cost of this printer to me was about $200,00 (US dolar). This solution solved my problem and gave me back my printer.

Re: Canon MP160 waste tank reset by lwt138 (5/8/08 7:19 AM) reply
I don't own MP 170 and I don't speak japanese. Sorry... But, check your user guide or check here http://www.instructionsmanuals.com It says Go to system setting by pressing "menu" repeatedly. Under system system: (use left and right to navigate) - Print settings - Pictbridge Set - Others Press OK Under "Others": Date/Time Set up, Read Only Mode, Power Save Mode, Language Setting.
Good luck, otherwise try to get someone who knows Japanese or contact Canon.

Thanks for ur concern. actually anybody who have an MP170 can help me as he can tell me the steps to do as he would be able to read the LCD. I already have the onscreen manual but it is not helpful; it tells u go to system settings!! which is possible only if I can read the LCD. so plz if anyone has an MP170 to help me thru this thanks

I Could reset the cartridges using lwt138 methode. MPTool displays that the ink level are full now. But when I restart the printer (by unplugging the cable) and thus when the printer is in normal mode, the same error E 5 is still displayed.
Could anyone who resolved the E 5 error with refill cartridges help me?
Thank you, Xenoforge.

canon MP160 is the worse printer i ever had.. if any of the two ink tanks is empty it will totally block itself, no scanning, no copy, no nothing..
i bought both new originals tanks but one had a problem estimating his ink and still would not go, i bought another new original canon tank and it works copy functions, but now it does not recognize the USB and it cannot communicate with the computer, so.. no printing..
i will never buy canon printers again, i-ll take a samsung color laser printer now, price is almost the same..
so.. GUYS STOP BUYING CANON !!!!

I'm in the same situation with an MP150. I note that when I read the eeprom with mptool I get a small file of 512 bytes of a cosistent data: obviously not the printer's firmware. I think maybe there is communication problem between mptool and the printer. I'm looking for a solution to the error E5 problem.

Re: Canon MP160 waste tank reset by Anonymous (9/4/08 2:22 PM) reply
mptool worked for me, I could see the ink levels were set to +/-100% after reset. But E5 error was still present when 'rebooting' the printer in normal mode.

Re: Re: Canon MP160 waste tank reset by freebilloon (9/4/08 4:16 PM) reply
Are you saying, with 'mptool worked for me', that the printer is now printing? It may be different on the MP160; on the MP150 the E5 error stops everything. From what I can gather from forums the E5 error occurs when the print count for the cartridges reaches a pre-set (exhausted) number. I would presume resetting the print count should resolve this problem. Also, the fact that when I attempted to read the firmware with mptool I didn't get a meaningful output led me to think there might be something wrong with the way I had this set up and that the cartridge level readings might also be false.

The MP160 printer is still not working after reset. I still don't know how to fix this. I've read that the problem could be fixed with a reset on a MP150 printer.

Re: Re: Canon MP160 waste tank reset by freebilloon (9/5/08 8:49 AM) reply
According to Anonymous in the 'PG 40 and CL 41 canon cartridge reseting' thread in this forum, 'the printers that use these cartridges write to an embedded chip in the circuit of the cartridge with the information that the cartridge is spent'. If this is true, then this is probably what error E5 tells us, and it appears to be something that mptool does not cater for.
I had rather though the firmware tool might have been something like the type of universal eeprom tool favoured by cdfreaks, but it seems not. Reverse engineering would not be a trivial task in any case, but you need at least to be able to read and write the firmware eeprom in order to do so.
If the printer does write this 'spent' state to the cartridge after a certain number of prints, then it seems a bit illegal to me, certainly dishonest!

Here's something interesting. I cannot get the "reset waste ink" function to appear on my mptool menu. Reset functions for EEPROM and BLACK/COLOR ink cartidges are there....but the reseting waste ink function doesn't come up as an option (the buttons are "dead"). Any idea why? I'm running in "low-level" mode.
Also, seems it cannot tell a COMPLETELY DEAD cartridge to reset anymore. Anyone else find this and have a solution?
Cheers!
