You can see the PC try to send the infomation then the printer comes up with the message (Unknown error remove all leads and contact service center). I have replaced the USB lead, reinstalled the Drivers, tryed it on another PC with the same results.

The second printer packed up after two months, by this time the warranty was up, I'm now stuck with two knackered printers.I've tried to get it repaired locally with no luck.

Unplug your printer and contact your dealer or authorized service center.
My friend used some non-Epson print cartridges, which started printing faintly, so he used the cleaning routine, and it faulted with the error.
He then fitted genuine Epson Cartridges, but it errors the same. I have installed the printer on a different computer with the latest drivers, but it still errors errors the same.
I'd really like to know (please) where one can get the adjustment program mentioned in other posts.

After trying all of the usual things such as changing the USB cable, reinstalling drivers, etc, I removed the cover and could not see anything obvious wrong although there seemed to be a lot of ink on everything. Does anybody know of any other troubleshooting techniques I can use? From what I've heard on this site and others, the cost of repair is more than the cost of the printer. Thanks for any help you can give.

You can enter this page : ftp://ftp.epson.de/pub/de/driver/
And download any Service Program you need....It is the official ftp server of Epson, and most important...IT IS FREE....But take care, many Epson Prints can be reseted without any program, just by pressing the panel buttons in a certain sequence.
Try this...With my Epson Stylus 680 it works 100% :
Press the paper and ink buttons at the same time and then the Start button. Keep both buttons pressed for about 5 seconds, until the lights start flashing. Then release the buttons and press the ink button until the lights stop flashing....And that is it...the counter is cleaned.

I found them very friendly and helpful and they have manuals and adj. progs. for most models at prices ranging from $4.99 to $9.99. They have had some problems with payment systems and had to stop doing credit cards, but are trying to set up paypal at present. I paid by Western Union. The programs I have tried worked well at resetting the waste ink counter (unknown error,maintenance error), and at setting printhead voltage. If you have any trouble ordering or paying, Email John at support@otd.com.ua. He will reply and sort out your problem, although not always immediately as they don't have the reliable infrastructure of developed countries.

Epson is getting ridiculous, they even have a special chip embedded in the ink cartridges on their new printers so you have to buy their replacement ink cartridges. You can't even refill them because for some reason or another this special chip knows it's been refilled and stops operating. If I need to buy a new printer sometime down the road. It will not be an Epson.

I found a 680 which mentioned this problem, so I googled and came up with this forum.
Deciding that risking $9.99(I thought I might either get ripped off or it wouldn't work) was better than £50 for a new printer which cartridges cost twice as much as for my 580, I bought it, received it by email soon after. Had a few problems running it, but emailed the guy, who pointed out that it was Win98 only. (I dual boot Linux Mandrake and Winxp)
Luckily I had a small 2.6GB drive and a copy of Win 98, so I installed win98, Installed the epson drivers, and ran the program. It says that if the counter is above 9600 then the customer should be contacted and the ink pads replaced. My counter was at 11608 (at 11600 the printer stops), I told it to reset it, and it did to 5000. Switched the compuetr off and back on again, and hey presto, my printer is working.
Surely this is illegal? I would understand it if the error was announced, but saying unknown error and printer stopping surely is wrong??
Has this been sent to watchdog and consumer TV programs?

That fix program we have and so do many others is supposed to be in the hands of Epson service centers. That way when the un-suspecting customer reads the error message. Down to the service center he or she goes. The tech automaticly knows wahts wrong and then runs the fix program on your printer. 90% of the time they don't even change the ink pads, they just soak up the excess ink. You go back to pick up your printer and surprise, surprise, since your printer is now over the Warranty period you get a service invoice for about $95.00. You could of bought 2 580's for that price. Some people just say oh well, and pay the bill and others will get pissed off and go out and buy a new printer. What an easy way to make a buck. I totally disagree with it, so the next time I buy a new printer, it won't be an Epson.
P.S. Eric Brasseur was giving that service program away for free on a page he wrote about this problem. Thanks Eric...

The person selling the programs, Did he write them? Or are they just epson service engineer programs he got hold off?
If he took the time to write them, you should pay the $9.99, Its not very much, and it saves a new printer. Let the guy earn his money

The error notice appeared immediately after installing a new color cartridge - ten minutes after installing a B&W cartridge. Would like to run the ink out before replacing this puppy. W98, W2K, OS/2 and XP but out of frustration that another printer died I just powered this thing up in linux while looking for linux drivers and it print fine color and black!!! Washed them out with warm tap water, dry them and replaced. Works great now. hope this helps.

Downloaded the SSIC software, used it and got my Epson S580 back to working again.
I reset the counter to zero. Had the dreaded "... unknown error occurred, send printer back" notice.
Also, cleaned out the overflow ink well and pad.

I have a C60 with this problem and I don't have any other clue about where to get this program. Epson "support" was not helpful at all. Thanks.
