 | Epson c86 - service required - counter reset by yio (8/23/06 10:24 AM) reply | + / - | Hi,
I have an Epson Stylus C86, and after researching for hours on this site and others like it, I'm pretty sure this printer has a waste ink counter problem. There are three buttons on top of a C86. I'll call them 'ink', 'paper', and 'power'. Right now the ink and paper lights are flashing an alternating red pattern with a message "service required" on the screen.
My printer was equipped with easy flow system and I am using to print 30-40 pages daily for last 12 months.. Color coverage per page is never more than10-20%......i think it is only counter. If somebody was able to solve this problem so far - I WOULD THANK YOU SO MUCH TO HELP ME !!!!!!!!!!! please email me: yio1963@gmail.com yio

 | Re: Epson c86 - service required - counter reset by Big Dave (9/27/06 7:04 AM) reply | + / - | Here's what you do:
1) Hold down the Ink button while powering on the printer. 2) Release all buttons when you see the the Paper and Power start flashing a simultaneous "double-tap". 3) Immediately press and hold Paper until the two lights stop flashing. Release all buttons. 4) The Paper light is now in one of three states, solid red, slowly flashing red, or quick flashing red.
At this point I know I'm in a programming mode.
Then
1) I think I continued to hold down 'Ink' button whilst holding 'Paper button for 10 secs. 2) the ink heads then move to the position to get replaced either a) replace them or b) press 'ink' button again to slide ink heads back to print position.
If this doesn't work I must have released 'ink' button and pressed 'paper' for 10 secs.
Cheers!

 | Re: Re: Re: Epson c86 - service required - counter reset by Julie Higginbotham (11/4/06 1:11 PM) reply | + / - | You CAN fix this but its not so easy. Resetting the counter is actually easier than figuring out how to deal with the waste ink situation, because in order to avoid flood/malfunction you've gotta give the ink somewhere to go.
So first ... the step by step instructions for rerouting the waste ink tube to an external bottle are here:
http://www.allthefaqs.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=33501#33501
I just recently bought a handy tube and reservoir bottle at ebay from inkjetsusa@copper.net, and it was less than $10 and arrived promptly -- but he's now been removed from ebay so you'd have to contact him directly. HIs directions that come with it are crummy, use the ones at the link above instead.
To remove the entire right cover from the c-86 you must pinch together the two white clips on the bottom of the unit and also push in on a clip that's recessed into a hole at the top right rear (left rear if you're facing the back of the unit). It almost looks like a port but it's not. Once you get the right cover off, finding the waste ink tube and patching it to a compatible overflow tube and reservoir is pretty easy.
After you've reassembled the thing, you go to inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html and download the free software as previously discussed here. It does only work with windows so if you're a mac user, borrow someone's laptop pc and hook your c86 up to it, then download the software and install it.
Now, here's the slightly tricky part that was driving me nuts -- when you install and launch it you'll find a dialog box/menu but ZERO reference to print counter reset. To get to this menu, you must right-click on the application icon in the Windows 'tray' (lower right of the screen). From there it is easy to find the function for resetting the "protection counter." A click and you're through without all the crazy button-pushing for manual programming.
If you scroll down the instructions at the ssclg website it actually DOES show this submenu but it appears nowhere in the actual downloaded documentation so I was going nuts trying to figure it out until I went back to their website. Like I said -- download and launch the software, then locate the software application icon for this software in the windows "tray" of icons, right-click it, then choose the 'protection counter" option from the menu.
good luck

 | Re: Epson c86 - counter reset by ek (9/11/07 9:39 PM) reply | + / - | I tried to reset the counter as you described above but it didn't seem to work.
Any other suggestions?
Basically I want to use only the black cartridge and not have to replace the color cartridges when the printer thinks they have run out. I can shake them and hear that there is still ink in them but somehow the printer thinks not.
Thanks for your help. -ek

Prior to this, the same notice of 'servicing needed' was presented to me by the printer. Here's what I did! Looked up the Epson website and found my nearest Service dealer. Took the printer in and within 3 hours it was returned, having been cleaned and reprogrammed, all for £15. No fuss, no mess and cheaper than buying a new printer; a life saver, given I have a stock of unused ink cartridges to use up.

although the c86 is not listed in the utility list of ssc the c87/88/89 are so it may work links below
http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml
http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html
second one has pretty pictures to help you through process
with regard to ink pads. why not just take them out anyway and wash them under running water until the ink is washed out then dry them and replace them
WEAR GLOVES if you do

 | Re: Epson c86 - service required - counter reset by technico (4/26/09 6:15 AM) reply | -1 + / - | The solution to reset the counter!
First download the SSC 4.30 service utilitu and install the program. Start this program and set configuration for C86 printer. click tab 'resetten' and set port and adress 'auto'. click the red 'x' to close the program. in the task bar, right, there appears an icon of this program. click with your right mouse button, choose protection counter in the pop up.. A second pop up appears with 'reset protection counter'. That wont work in this situation. First clean and dry the ink adapters in the bottom of the printer bij pressing them between kitchen paper. (use plastic cloves to protect your fingers against getting black). Then press the ink button and the on button on top of the printer simultaniously. Keep them pressed until the paper button and the on button blink simultaniously. Than release the buttons. During this state (a short time to work in) there is a data link between the computer and the printer so you can run the 'reset protection counter' with the SSC programm

 | Re: Re: Epson c86 - service required - counter reset by Anonymous (5/21/09 3:06 PM) reply | + / - | I've tried the procedure above 50 times and it's not moving the ink cartridges. I need more exact instructions than "I think" or "if this doesn't work I must have...". Does anyone know exactly which buttons for how long in what sequence? Thanks so much...sorry I'm really crabby and frustrated and I'm on a deadline!

 | Re: Epson c86 - service required - counter reset by websnail (6/13/09 6:25 PM) reply | + / - | Rather than messing around with the SSC utility if you simply want to reset the waste ink counter you can use the A10_IPR that Epson released in North America.
It is compatible with the C86 and C88 (not C84 or D88) and very simple to use on any windows machine.
All the info you need is here: http://www.wasteink.co.uk/epson-ipr-reset/
Also, please note the modification listed as on Allthefaqs.net has been moved to octoink.co.uk including updated photos on releasing the side panel. (I would post a link but this site borks when you have two links on a single post!)
Hope that lot helps.
