 | Epson Stylus Photo 1270 magenta banding by jackyoc (5/5/06 1:10 PM) reply | + / - | Hello,
This looks a very helpful forum - hope you can help me.
My 1270 is 5 yrs old and has been great, but has developed horizontal magenta lines on prints despite repeated head cleaning, replacing ink carts (only genuine Epson), leaving it overnight etc. Sometimes it's OK for a while after any/all these procedures, then it starts again. Sometimes 1 or 2 magenta lines, sometimes covers most of the page. Sometimes one of these lines is blurry. Seems to be printing the magenta part of the print OK - the bands are over the top of the print. Print quality itself is fine.
Some time ago the printer started being very noisy - clanks etc. on starting up.
I've searched umpteen forums and only seen this problem mentioned once, and then no replies to it! Ordinary horizontal gaps caused by clogged heads has been an occasional problem but cured by head cleaning as normal. This magenta banding is quite different.
I know the machine is 5 years old but it's fine for what I want it for - reproducing my artwork for sale so I rely on it! How long should a printer last anyway? I use approx. 3 cartridge sets a year, which I don't think is excessive.
Many thanks.

The magenta inks can be troublesome for most any printer. Are there any lines outside of the margins of the photos?

The 1270 doesn't do borderless prints, so, it definitely goes into the margin - on a web printout anyway - everything else I threw away in frustration! One artwork page I did keep just has the lines across the printed part of the page, which was about half the width, but sometimes the lines are only short no matter what is printed - there's no consistency to it!

Re: banding problem, I trawled through about 100 threads and found similar things mentioned, and all were on 1280 or 1290 printers which are similar to my 1270 I think, so looks like it's a prblem with these types of machine. They were all a few years old which mine is too...Epson obviously don't expect their printers to last more than a few years - I don't need all the new techie stuff, just need to print my artwork etc. Plus my old Apple iMac OS9 won't support the new printers. Does this mean I must get a new computer just 'cos I need a new printer? Has anyone managed to keep a printer running for more than 5 years? Thanks everyone who replies to problems and tries to help - wish I could return the compliment!

 | Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1270 magenta banding by Anonymous (5/6/06 12:00 PM) reply | + / - | I would try the cleaning kit first. But if you go to the Epson web site and go to the clearance section you will find A R800 for $199.00 and a Stylus Photo 1280 for $299.00.
I would avoid the Dura Brite inks bacause they don't the higher quality and digital photographers/artists require for high quality prints.

 | Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1270 magenta banding by jackyoc (5/29/06 10:56 AM) reply | + / - | Hi everyone who replied to my magenta banding problem - thanks. I took it to an Epson repair centre who said it could be the software because of the arrangement of the lines - 3 close together at bottom of page - he said it looked like a command so it must be the software telling the printer to do it, and to reinstall it, but my son tried it on his PC - so the software has been installed on another computer - and it's still doing it. Anyway I've bought a new 1290S because it's the only one that will work with my old Applemac OS9 and is almost the same as the 1270 - buying a new computer to go with a more up to date printer isn't an option! If it gives me another few years' service I won't complain...
Thanks for the info on Epson's clearance section - could be useful. Great site, good luck everyone.

Was about to go back to Epson carts when printer began to print cyan lines across page. This is getting worse and now also get a few magenta lines as well. Contacted local service agent who said will cost more money to repair than the printers worth. he also said I had good value for my money if it lasted 5 years!!
Have done about 250 A4 prints, counting A3s as 2 and printer cost just less than £400 so that adds about £1.60 to each A4 print and £3.20 to each A3 print. Ink system cost £150.0 and Paper average about £1 per sheet with wastage thats £1.60 + £0.60 + £1.00 = £3.20 per A4 and £6.40 Per A3 still cheaper than having printing out sourced. Now looking for replacement, R2400 any good?

 | Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1270 magenta banding by printerrepairpros (10/22/07 4:04 PM) reply | + / - | R2400 is an excellent printer. However, be aware that it is optimized for matte paper prints. If glossy is your choice, then the R1800 is a better bet. Hope this helps.
