I need someone's good advice about fixing a Officejet 7210. In the process of changing my black cartridge I somehow broke off a plastic piece in the catridge stall. This plastic piece secured the metal spring in stall that retracts when a catridge is installed. Well, because it was not secured It caused it to poke a hole in the electrical strip in the back that has the cartridge contacts. Now my printer doesn't think there is a catridge loaded and gives me an error telling me so.
I need advice as to what I should do. I am out of warranty. Is this a part that can be replaced or fixed ? I also noticed that these printer parts are secured with a non-standard screwdriver. Is this a HP only screw bit that prevents the average Joe from switching or repairing these printers ? Help is appreciated.

Thanks for advice. Are you being serious ? I paid close to $300 for the thing. Is there no options in your opinion ? Even buying one for parts off ebay and replacing the broken pieces ? you seem confident that this is the only solution. Would it cost me more to repair ?
Thanks

Have the same problem. We used really strong tape in place of the plastic piece that broke-(Temporary Redneck Fix) we don't get the error message anymore...for now. Researching for a replacement-one without that plastic piece!

WE HAVE SEEN A FEW OF THESE. THE USER IS NOT TO BLAME FOR THE PROBLEM. THE WIRE THAT HOLDS THE #96 BLACK CARTRIDGE IN PLACE BREAKS LOOSE FROM ITS PLASTIC MOUNTS. YOU CAN REPAIR THIS BY PUTTING THE PRINTER ON ITS SIDE, PUTTING THE WIRE BACK IN ITS PLACE AND THEN GLUING THE WIRE WHERE IT WAS ORIGINALLY. HOWEVER .....MOST OF THE TIME THE LOOSE WIRE HAS POKED A HOLE IN THE INK CARTRIDGE CIRCUITRY AND AS FAR AS WE KNOW THERE ARE NO REPLACEMENT PARTS AVAILABLE. WE SUGGEST GLUING THE WIRE IN PLACE BEFORE IT BREAKS IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.
