An absorber kit which includes parts manual, service manual with reset codes is available from ABC at http://www.abctechinc.com/canonkit.htm for $40. Not all models are available though because Canon does not supply them to service centers as these printers are considered 'disposable'.

Canon ip1000 'waste tank full' -10 minute repair! by Rhoops (7/4/09 4:36 AM) reply + / -
Just had the 'red' warning -take the printer to a specialist repair shop after 20 or so 'waste tank full' warnings, and that means the printer stops working. SO... here's what I did to get the printer working -all back to normal in 10 minutes.

STEP 1: --------Open the printer front (where you open to change the ink cartridges). If the cartridge case (CC) moves to the middle, fine, if not, close the case, switch the printer off, open the case, switch it on, and pull the electric cord out from the back when the CC is at the left hand side or preferably the middle.

STEP 2: --------Accessing the waste tank pads. You need a pair of tweezers and a torch. With the printer front still open look down to the far left about 2" into the machine using the torch. There should be 2 small pads in a black rubber setting- the pads are probably stained black with ink. The pads are about 1/2" x 1/4" in size one is a bit smaller. Gently insert the tweezers under the nearest edge of the nearest pad and very carefully lift the side of it up and pull it out. Carefully is the object here, because if you drop it, it will gleefully conform to Sod's Law and fall into a dark recess from which it will never return.

STEP 3.--------Take both pads out, drop them in some water and soak for a few seconds, rinse under a tap (remember-plug IN for when you drop them...!) until they are white. Drop them on a tissue for a minute, and blow dry with a hair drier for about 20 seconds.

STEP 4.------Cleaning the inside of the printer. Using cotton buds make a half hearted attempt to clean the worst of the ink from around the pads rubber setting, but clean all of it from the pad rubber settings themselves. Also the Cartridge Case must be cleaned too. With it stopped in the middle of the open printer as described above, push the retainer bracket down and release the cartidge case [not the ink cartridges, the thing that holds both of them]and lift it out (push the CC very gently to the right if the retainer bracket is restricted by the top of the main printer case).

STEP 5.--------Clean the bottom of the CC with tissues. it takes some doing as the ink leeches out from the catridges above. When clean, replace it in its original position and slip the retainer bracket up into position too.

STEP 6.----------Resetting the pads. With the tweezers holding the long side of the smaller pad, slip the far edge under the 2 tiny rubber clips on the far side of the rubber retainer in the printer. Then push the near side of the pad down with the tweezers gently, don't attempt to reset it under the near pad clips yet. Now gently pull the rubber clips towards you with the tweezer edge, and release them to let them slip over the pad. Gently doing this a few times is far better than trying to force it under with big movements which will only send the pad flying into those dark recesses inside... Once in repeat for the larger pad, and close the printer front, all done here!

STEP 7.--------Resetting the printer.
1:- Disconnect printer from AC power
2:- Press and HOLD the POWER button, and
connect printer to AC power
3:- release the the POWER button
4:- Press the POWER button again.

AND THATS IT
Save yourself the cost of 'specialist repair' ie an underpaid teenage idiot who'll invariably break something else whilst attempting to do the third rate job you can do better yourself!

Re: Help! Canon ip1000 waste tank full by Rhoops (10/23/09 2:50 AM) reply + / -
"waste tank full..."

I believe this is caused by ink dripping down into 2 silicon tubes connected to the underneath of the waste pad black rubber holder, which are there presumably for the purpose of indicating excess ink waste.
I solved this by unfixing them, gently tapping them and letting the ink in the tubes drip out. Then re-fixing the tubes back in position.
Simple.... but getting to the tubes is definitely NOT! If you're not mechanically confident and reasonably dexterous, its probably a lot easier to fork out £50 for another printer!

It involves some serious dismantling, and it is non optional to digi-photo EVERY phase of dismantling.

1. Remove the 2 black side panels, by levering them off.
2. Undo the 3/4 (?) screws revealed in the sides of the printer.
3. Lever off the main case, it's mainly attached with internal catches to the top rear of the printer, a screw driver to push and release them is one technique. Forcing them is another...!
4. With the case removed; find the black rubber waste ink pad holder to the left of the main printer cartridge runner. It is held by a complicated white plastic substructure. Locate the 2 springs beneath this, and photo their location and the white structure too. Part of the white structure can move to the left, push it there and photo it again.
5. DISMANTLING: using a small screwdriver, flick the two springs off their location points one at a time, they are different sizes, so use a colour felt tip pen or similar to identify the spring and its location points. Now jiggle the entire white structure until it falls apart. It can't be taken out completely yet as the 2 tubes mentioned above are still attatched. Photo the underside of the rubber waste holder and the tubes in situ.
6. Now the tubes and ink can be removed, there may only be a tiny amount of ink. To remove the ink gently tap the tubes until the ink starts to drip out. Rubbing/rolling the tubes between your fingers under pressure helps too. Once the inks all gone, it's time to put it all back together...

FIRST DOWNLOAD THE PHOTOS AND PUT THEM ON A NICE BIG COMPUTER SCREEN TO REFER TO....go on... you'll regret it later otherwise!

7. Fix the tubes back in place, and put the white structure back in place, I taped the tubes to the side of the printer now to get them out the way for the next step.
8. Putting the white structure back together. This is difficult, allow for a LOT of patience and time! Your primary advantage is having the digi photos to refer too here, because it is a very complicated reconstruction otherwise. Having located the white structure correctly in position, re-fix the springs... I used blue tack to hold one end in position on the bent lug, and tweezers/a thin spike tool to get the other end of the spring in position on the straight lug. its extremely frustrating to do, and even worse if you are putting the wrong spring back... (so mark them during dismantling).
9. The white structure is back in place... Hooray!
10. Put the case back together in reverse order as above. a little force and only minor case cracking should relieve some stress here!
11. I can't remember, but I think it's necessary to 'Reset the Printer', refer to the last points in my post above for this.

I had to do this about a week after the problem referred to in my previous post. The printer has worked without any problem for several months now.

Hi,
unfortunately, I have got the same problem. Today I was trying to clean my printer and I noticed a missing string too late. My printed went crazy. As I did not know about the strings, I did not make a photo. Now I am absolutely lost. I found out how to put the "white thing" together and to the machine, but I still do not know, where I should put one string. Does anybody have some photo of the right position? I would really like to have it. Thank you. M.

Re: Spring locations.
Both springs are fixed to lugs on the underside of the white structure
If you imagine the white structure as a square looking from on top, the spring on the west side is at a NW/SE diagonal and fixes on NW end to the printer structure, and SE on to west edge of white structure.
The other spring connects the 2 parts of the white structure together. It lies E/W and is located in the middle of the south half of the square. When in place it's mostly visible in the deepest slot (seen from above) on the south part of the white structure.

Thank you very much, I'll definitely try it. M.
