Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by koolance (2/18/05 8:10 AM) +1 + / -
Just recevied on 2/17/05. Paper jam's 98% of the time. I have tried everything possible (faning paper, change paper, single sheet,). Then when I get the printer to print, the paper ejects with the top right conner always folded over. CD/DVD tray goes in (not even half way) and comes out with error saying "Reload the tray, then press the Paper button on the printer." I have tried this many, many, ect... times. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have check for loose objects in the paper and CD-DVD path. Nothing.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by Wes (2/20/05 9:25 AM) + / -
There seems to be a few paper feed/cd try issuse with that model. If the printer is new I would contact Epson and let them deal with it. You have a 1 year warranty so why not use it. If you break something trying to fix it then you would be out of luck.

I hope this helps,

Wes.

I'm having exactly the same problem. If anyones worked out how to fix this, please let me know. Paper will print fine, but the printer won't print CD's. If i don't get it sorted soon, the printers going back to epson!

koolance & ruth...Just to let you know: Most "Epson Authorized Service Dealers" are not actually trained on the newer "C","CX", "R" or "RX" models, so I'm sorry, but I cannot really be of any help to you. Epson Company does not even allow their dealers to work on those models under warranty. They simply send a Replacement Printer in exchange for the defective unit thats under warranty and the defective printer is then sent back to Epson. If your printer is actually still under its origional Factory Warranty, then there's no charge to talk to the "Epson Technical Support Department". That way you are talking directly with a technician, that is actually trained by Epson Company on your particular printer. To see available phone numbers for technical support and replacement parts ordering, go on-line to Epson @ " http://www.epson.com ", or call the Epson Automated Support Locator @ 1-800-442-2110 [press 1, then 1 & following prompts]. If your printer is out of warranty, you will need a credit card, before the technicians can help you, because there is a charge for technical support over the phone. If they are unable to actually help you over the phone and your printer is under warranty, then you can call the "Epson Connection", at 1-562-276-1300 and file a Warranty Claim. Epson normally offers a WHOLE UNIT EXCHANGE on most ink jet style printers that fail under warranty, but you may need to provide "Proof Of Purchase" [origional sales receipt or invoice] to complete that warranty claim. You also need to know that a Whole Unit Exchange is where Epson will send you a replacement printer, in exchange for your defective warranty printer. That replacement printer is usually not an actual new printer. It may be another printer that also failed under warranty and was also returned to Epson Company. Returned warranty printers, then go thru the Epson Repair Facility, where they are repaired. Then they may be used as a replacement printer, for any other printers of the same model that may also fail under warranty...Good Luck! Denny Conway

I, too, am having the same problem. I tried it again last night (2x) and got it to work. I took all of the regular paper out of the paper holder, put the tray in and lined it up. I had to give it a push so that it would move. At some time the red paper light came on, so I pressed it and pushed the tray in again. The printer took it this time and completed the print job. This doesn't solve the problem, but at least I got it to work. Fry's had a sale on the printer last week for $79.99 and the ink cost me around $74.00, so I'll probably just get another one if the problem persists or call Epson for a replacement since I'm still in warranty and have my receipt.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problem by zecchm (4/9/05 9:43 AM) + / -
I had the same problem with the CD tray that kept popping out on me and telling me to re-align it after it seemed to go all the way in with no problem. I called Tech. Support and they asked me if I had at least 6 inches of room behind the printer. I only had two inches, so I moved out the printer and it worked! The tray will extend behind the printer and will not print if it hits anything so check for that.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problem by Denny Conway (4/11/05 11:01 AM) + / -
Anonymous...Just to let you know: Unfortunatly, Epson Company changed their "Whole Unit Exchange" policy at the begining of March 2005. You can no longer get a whole unit exchange on the most of the smaller ink jet printers, including your "R200". You have to now take it to an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer" for actual repairs...Denny Conway

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by sandylp (4/11/05 2:39 PM) + / -
I called Epson, and they sent me a new cd/dvd tray. Fortunately, the new tray made all the difference and now the printer prints on the cd/dvd discs just like before. I think the plastic guides on the edge of the original tray had become bent, so the tray would no longer go in by itself. I already have another Epson printer, so the R200 is used just for printing on discs, which it does very well....now.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by wag12 (5/1/05 12:25 PM) + / -
Like the others posting to this thread I also have a Epson R200 and have been experiencing problems with the DVD tray misfeeding. I have been experiencing misfeeds of the DVD tray about 30% of the time. I have tried several different things including ordering a new DVD tray and none of these has helped. Recently I have found something that seems to have fixed the problem. You align the white arrows on the DVD tray with the white arrows on the printer when you insert the DVD tray into the printer. When you then start printing the printer will initially kick the DVD tray out slightly before it starts pulling it in to print the DVD. After the printer initialy kicks the DVD tray out, it pauses breiefly before drawing the tray into the printer to print the DVD. What you must do is quickly realign the white arrows on the tray with those on the printer before the printer starts to draw the tray into it to print it. I have done this on ten consecutive DVDs now that I have printed and they all printed correctly with no tray misfeeds. I would like other owners of the R200 to try this and let me know if that has helped correct the tray misfeed problems that you have been having.

Good luck

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by sandylp (5/1/05 2:21 PM) + / -
I have the Epson R200 and had the tray replaced to correct the cd/dvd tray not going in automatically. I think that after 50 dvd discs, the little plastic guides on the end got bent. The replacement tray works like it did when I bought it. I use it mainly for the dvd discs, but also print out pages occasionally. It doesn't jam on mine, so I think something must be wrong with yours if it does. I'd call Epson during the warranty period and insist on a replacement, because it shouldn't do that.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by +EpsonUser (5/1/05 2:32 PM) + / -
Due to misalignment of ASF assembly. Detail information about how ASF work and alignment is in the service manuel.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by Anonymous (5/13/05 5:24 PM) + / -
I've this trouble for 2 days. After trying everything, i just called Epson support...it was just the sensor of Cd tray, it was dirty because some ink was there. How does it get there? Some generic cartridge was spoiled and converted my printer in a big mess. For them was just 20 minutes to clean it up, they have to open it and clean the sensor. Now everything is perfect!

I found the fix !!!! by the doctor (5/25/05 11:45 AM) + / -
I was having the same problems many were having with the DVD/CD tray not loading properly. Here is the fix I found.

Look very carefully at the little strip of clear plastic at the leading end of the tray. That piece of plastic must not be bent in any way!!

If it is try to very carefully flatten the plastic so that it does not protrude below the bottom of the tray (that is if the tray is laying down flat on a desk top). I actually bent the plastic upward very slightly and now my printer prints properly!

good luck all...

the doctor

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by Sandylp (5/25/05 12:20 PM) + / -
I finally figured out that the little plastic guides were the cause of my cd/dvd tray not going into the printer automatically, too. I got a replacement tray from Epson, but the guides will probably get bent again in time. When that happens, I'll try your suggestion.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by DJBoogie (5/31/05 7:26 PM) + / -
Rip that plastic guide off, it serves no purpose
it loads much better without it
but I get the same error due to the sensor with ink on it
this printer is garbage
I actually have the r320
you would think after such a huge design flaw they would have rectified the problem
think I will go back to hp

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by sandylp (5/31/05 8:28 PM) + / -
Well, it works fine for my purposes. The only thing I use it for is to print on the dvd discs. It does a beautiful job. But, I must admit, sometimes lining up the tray can be a bit frustrating.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problem by bradbrummett (6/4/05 10:17 PM) + / -
i have tried EVERYTHING. i just got done trying the tape. i had it working for the first 12 hours using the arrow-alignment-after-kickout technique... now nothing. it simply will not load the tray in. i hope that it's not what i've read about a dirty sensor because i'm really desperate to get this project completed, and i don't want to have to have it serviced. does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks,
brad

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by sandylp (6/4/05 11:31 PM) + / -
If the printer won't take the tray in automatically, you just have to give the tray a little push. Before Epson sent me a new tray, I had the same experience as you're having. It took me awhile, but I was soon able to recognize when the tray wasn't loading correctly and the right time to push it forward. At first you might have to lift the cover and position the white plastic guides under the roller bar before you push it forward. Also, just press the red light button if it won't go. It takes some experimentation. In the meantime, call Epson and ask them to send you a new tray. I didn't have any problems after I got the new tray.

looks rough - but this fix I found for the problem we all seem to have really works - I tried it and not a single problem for an hour of printing.

This looks like a great idea! Tell me, where do you buy tyvek tape? I don't think I've ever heard of it. Sandy

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problem by bradbrummett (6/11/05 5:59 PM) + / -
Hi, I actually ended up taking back my 1st R200 for a new one. To my absolute horror, it did not work! I tried repeatedly, but no luck. Just when I was about to give up all hope, epson tech support emailed me back with a suggestion that seemed unlikely:

"From the Epson CD software, check the following settings:

Click on FILE and select PAGE SETUP.
Ensure Stylus Photo R200 is selected as the FORMAT FOR option and
the
PAPER SIZE is set to A4.
Click OK.
Click on FILE and select PRINT
Ensure the Stylus Photo R200 is listed under PRINTER.
From the pull-down menu select PRINTER SETTINGS
Select CD/DVD as the Media Type
Click Print."

It was the part about the media type that did it. Although I'd initially done this when I originally installed the printer, somehow this option had gotten reset. Now it works great. I haven't had any problems since (50 cds later). And I don't have to do anything strange like pushing in the tray or using tyvek tape.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problem by superv (6/15/05 12:47 PM) + / -
For people that have these sticking/slipping problems, i suggest you just find a knife or nail and create many little lines/notches on the bottom surface of the cd tray (more friction the better)
most slippage occurs cause the bottom surface is too smooth for the rollers to catch

wag, you just saved me the hassle of returining the printer, after the inital kick out, realigning the tray worked.

Thanks for your advice = D

Help!!
I've tried all of the solutions above to get this thing to print a CD.

I'm on a Mac, and everytime i tell it to print a CD (and yes, I've done the Page Set-Up correctly and all that) it spits out the CD tray - and then I get a prompt saying "The CD/DVD tray is open."

Well, duh, of course it is, I'm trying to print a CD. I've tried restarting, nudging the little tray, putting some tape on the tray, notches, everything descibed above.

Has anyone else using Mac been able to solve this prob and print a CD or DVD??

Thanks!!!!

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by Sandylp (7/3/05 11:44 PM) + / -
Yes, I'm on a Mac and I've been using this printer for some time. One thing, though, when you first turn the printer on, make sure the cd tray is closed (flipped up). The printer has to go through it's little cleaning process. After it finishes, then you can put the cd-dvd tray down, position your disc and tell it to print. If this doesn't work, I'd take it back and get another one. All I can say is that I've used it to print over a hundred discs, and it does a fabulous job.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by Anonymous (7/5/05 2:57 PM) + / -
I was having all these problems, only solved it when i turned off print preview in the printer settings menu. I can't understand why this happened but the preview used to show an a4 sheet, as soon as that was turned off it started printing cds fine. might be worth trying!

The 6" behind the printer worked a treat for me, I could not understand why it stopped working when I put it on a shelf under my desk.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by cruising60 (7/20/05 10:48 AM) + / -
After going through my 3rd tray, the 2nd was under warranty and the 3rd cost me $10.00 I thought it was time to do something about it. I purchased a 4' x 2' sheet of 10 mil Duralar plastic from a local Art supply shop, some tacky glue from Walmart and pulled the mylar strip from one of the trays that wasn't working. I used the mylar strip as a template to make up a new strip and cut it out using a sharp pair of scissors. I then glued the new strip on to the tray and added a couple of small pieces of 1/2" scotch tape at each end to keep it in place. So far I've printed over 100 dvd's without a problem. I made up a couple extra strips and have them ready to go on the old trays. I believe the 10 mil is a little thicker then the original mylar strip and think it may last a little longer. I also wiped the bottom of the tray with alcohol to clean up the ink. The sheet of Duralar cost me $3.00 and the glue cost .85. If I have any problems with this setup as time goes by I will be sure to post them on this forum.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by Sandylp (7/20/05 3:02 PM) + / -
Thanks for posting your solution, cruising60. Hopefully, Epson will change the design of the trays in future printer versions and save their customers all this frustration! The dvds look great, don't they? I've been very pleased with the results.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by cruising60 (7/25/05 2:21 PM) + / -
Looks like Epson may have solved their problem with the cd/dvd trays. I received one today on back order and it does not have the mylar strip on it at all. The lead in strip is now a part of the black plastic tray and should not wear out like the mylar strip used to. Loaded it up today and it worked fine. Hope this revision solves our problems. Will let you know if I have problems later on.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by sandylp (7/26/05 1:57 PM) + / -
Thanks, I've emailed them with a request for a new tray. Mine has just started to have problems again...I have to give it a push and this is my second one. My computer is still in the warranty period, so I hope they will send me another one.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by cruising60 (7/26/05 4:01 PM) + / -
The tray I received is stamped with a D8 on the back of it. If you get one of the earlier versions with the plastic guide on it, I would call them back and see if they would send you one of the later models. The weak point on the trays is the plastic guide.

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by Anonymous (8/5/05 8:36 PM) + / -
Thanks for such a priceless patch-up work. I tried exactly as suggested and it worked. In the mean time, I called the Epson technical suport complaining about the problem; the guy told me that he is not aware of the tray as a common problem, but, later did identify that I need a new tray and they will send a replacement part to me. The printer was only 2 weeks old. Thanks once again for the help.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by sandylp (8/6/05 11:26 AM) + / -
Epson wouldn't send me another tray. They referred me to a website for replacement parts. Anyway, I ordered another tray and it has D9 stamped on the back of it. The clear plastic guides are gone and it just has two little black tabs on the end. Seems to work fine.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by cruising60 (8/6/05 11:48 AM) + / -
they look like they should take care of the problem. Keep the others just in case you may need them. I've got mine set up with the mylar strip ready to go. I read where one person said he was able to use it without the strip altogether. May try that if I need to.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problem by me (8/6/05 1:11 PM) + / -
I've been having much the same trouble as everyone else.
It dosent mean the loss of a disc though!
I had a go at re-printing a disc that had only printed halfway,I placed the tray carefully back in position, printed again and it printed perfectly over the original ruined print!

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by gordon77 (8/19/05 10:40 PM) +1 + / -
Hi everyone.
I also suffer from R200 but I figured out a way to overcome the tray alignment problem. The sensor for tray is on the left bottom side of cartigde assembly. Somehow ink is "sprayed" also there or ink sticks there from a jammed paper.(90% design problem) Press on ink button wait until the cartigdes come to replacement position then unplug the printer. Wet couple of cotton earsticks and push the assembly to right ( there is more room at the bottom at right where the assembly normally positioned when it is off) then clean the bottom left part of the assembly until there is no ink on the cotton. It will need couple of runs until it comes clean so be sure that you have enough sticks. Then use one dry one. It worked for me but first time I had to open up the whole printer to understand the problem. (Ofcourse this info is given with good info but without guarantee try not to touch the print head you may damage it. It's just half of an inch further right ) Now it prints just fine but still I have to kick the tray to get it print. If someone know a good solution for tray taking problem please reply.
Thanks

I found a fix for all your problems. I have been having the same problems for a few weeks now. After talking to our press tech at work, he suggested I use a Roller cleaner on the rubber rollers inside the printer. He handed me some

AEROSOL RUBBER CLEANER/REJUVENATOR
ABDICK AEROSOL SPRAYS
Cleans ink-laden, hardened rubber rollers and blankets, and removes difficult soil on copier machine covers and flaps. 16 oz by weight.

I used a cotton swab to apply the cleaner to and wipped down the rollers, after using the cleaner, dry with a small peice of cloth and your ready to go. Apply a second coat of the cleaner/rejuvenator if problem is still present or doesnt hold for more then a few prints. I will submit a link to where this can be purchused.

This stuff is a life saver!! good luck everyone!

We tested all the Rubber Roller Rejuvenators out there and the very best one is sold on this site in the Specials Section. I'm sure most people don't need a 16 oz bottle of the stuff, so ours is in a more economical 6.5 oz can.

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by BennettOZ (9/7/05 1:33 AM) + / -
Well I was just posting what I found to work for me. I wasnt saying! "hey everyone, go buy this". I was just saying "hey this is what worked for me, if you want to try it, go for it". And the abdick roller rejuvenator is also very good. so you cant say "we tested all the rubber roller rejuvenators out there and the very best one is". Because some rejuvenators will work better for others, so rather, you should say, "we tested many rejuvenators, and some of the best ones are sold right here on this site". Not to points fingers or sound like a dick, but try wording this a little different not to upset someone. Thanks!

Thank you so much!
I had a problem which required reinitializing the hard drive, resulting in having to reload the printer driver. I didn't remember setting the media, on my first installation but, I followed your instructions and now my R200 is back up and running. I cant tell you how much I appreciate the information.
BTW: I didn't find those actual instructions in the manual, under CD/DVD printing. It's under the paper section, however, if one extrapolates.

I was having problems too with this printer but as someone suggested here was to move it forward a few inches and it fixed my problem!

I didnt know the cd guide went out the back of the printer.... Great printer otherwise.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by Dan Auerbach (9/16/05 5:39 AM) + / -
Well, after trying half the night to print on a dvd, rereading each step in the manual..., I got so frustrated and went to sleep. In the morning with a clear head, I ripped that plastic tab off the end of the tray since I saw it would get jammed in the rollers since it was slightly bent. Well, it went in smoothly afterwards but still not printing with red lights flashing. Then, through my frustration I googled to this forum. To sum it up, I redid all the steps only this time pulling the printer away from the wall. Ah ha!!! Now knowing that the tray goes through thhe printer needing clearance, which I thought of before but thought it was fine since I could see the tray in far enough to print.
Well, this little tid bit solved my problems. I want to thank the people on this forum since I been so frustrated after editing on fcp, designing on motion, building on dvd studio pro, then burning the dvd and to top it off, be let down by a epson printer that reminded of the one I had in the 90's that I would need to reinstall the software after it would flip out. This one belongs to my daughter which she received from the Apple store when she bought her ibook. I personally use a laser printer as I feel better about the quality, except that it does not print on dvd's.
So I got through thhat problem, thanks to this forum.

I am starting a business to sell information CDs and Ebooks on eBay, and needed a way to print on CD without using an old "stomper" method. Does everyone still think this is a great printer for CD/DVD printing, or should I keep looking? I need to make about 100 cd's a month; can this printer handle it?.

After I make some money, I will buy a Bravo burner/printer unit, but they cost $1,500-2,5000, and this is way out of my budget right now. I would like to start with the Epson. You guys are users and you would know of the value of this printer, so I trust your opinions. Tell me what do you think.

I recently bought this printer refurbished & it came without the Epson Print CD software. Does anyone know where I can download this software? It's not available on Epson's site for some reason. Or is there other free software available or maybe a template for Photoshop or something? This is the function I purchased this printer for and I'm peaved that I cant use it. Topher

Thanks for the advise. We were ready to throw our printer out the window. We moved it a few inches forward and voila we have disks.

Alignment Off on CD/DVD by Anonymous (10/7/05 1:05 PM) + / -
In response to wag12, I do the same procedure to ensure the CD/DVD feeds... listen for the rollers to turn and nudge it gently in. It printed fine EXCEPT it is totally mis-aligned (by about 5mm side-to-side and top-to-bottom). I adjusted in the "adjust alignment option" to no avail. Help me please... I'm melting. Robin

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by Dsstrainer (10/23/05 6:25 PM) + / -
The 6 inches in the back of the unit fixed it! turns out the tray was hitting the power cord in back and even if it missed that, it would have hit the back wall of the desk. So i gave it 6 inches and Voila! Success!

After starting a week ago with an r300 which never did work right, bought a new r320 yesterday. After 2 sheets of test pattern & 27 cd's, the tray was already sliding in the rollers....less than 4 hours out of the box. Not the REAR roller bar, where the clear lead tab is said to be the problem, but the front rollers; the FRONT roller bar is half the problem with the rear feed. I was very dilligent with care in handling the tray, having already tried the 300 where the tray had to be force-fed, and the clear lead tab is just fine, but the forward roller bar simply doesn't have enough grip force to start the lead edge behind the clear strip into the rear roller bar. The tape method would work fine, helping to soften the transition in thickness from the clear tab to the black plastic tray. A couple strips of cloth medical tape lengthwise down the bottom sides of the tray would also be a good "traction assist". The "align to the arrows" bit is really overrated: the printer determines the exact position of the tray by reading the white squares & holes on the tray; just get close and it will do the rest. While the roller cleaning would be an important part of this operation working right, I can't help but say "Yeah...but in less than 4 hours!?

I've one added problem, too, and that is the print head began spattering ink about the same time the rollers started loosening up. Clean the rollers, do multiple head cleanings, multiple paper-feeds, the print a cd & halfway through it you've got ink spattered on rollers and your work. This is using Epson's cartridges that came with the printer, and again...4 hours out of the box. I've probably wasted more ink doing more cleanings on this printer than all my other printers combined. (2 HP Lasrjets & 5 varying combo HP inkjets including a little deskjet over 10 years old that still prints like the day it was new). There's just no valid reason for the print head to be slinging droplets of ink out onto the rollers and fouling things up with such a brief amount of use, with epson-provided ink cartridges, and the utmost of care in it's sad little 4-hour long lifespan. 27 CD's....whoopie! 25 came out very nice, but on 26 the ink spots began, and that's when I noticed the tray starting to skid in the rollers- not yet on the in-stroke, but as it's being discharged, once it's cleared the rear, white roller bar.

I'll be call Epson later today, since there's not one word on their website about whats obviously a serious design flaw. They'd better have some good answers soon; from all the forums where I've seen post after post on this problem tonight, Epson's headed for some harsh times if not. Hoping someone here may have some input on the inking problems to share; the tray feed issue I think I've got covered. Thanks!

Re: Alignment Off on CD/DVD by PrarieCat (10/26/05 3:58 AM) + / -
I had the same alignment problem on the r300 I got last week; I adjusted the settings and it didn't move the print. To be sure I wasn't crazy I tried adjusting alignment settings DRASTICALLY in several directions (one at a time), then printed each on discs I pre-marked with the previous print position using calipers; it continued to print in the exact same mis-alignment time after time. Never got beyond there because not much else was working right either & pitched it for a new r320. The 320 print was only.01mm off perfect right from the start, but tray & ink splatter issues have come up within just a few hours use.

Re: P.S. On the ink spatter problem by PrarieCat (10/26/05 4:13 AM) + / -
P.S. On the ink spatter problem I mentioned, I failed to note that the ink is spraying onto the rear, white rollers; it is not ink transferring from the freshly printed disc and contaminating the front rollers.

UPDATE: Spoke with Epson this morning, and they immediately asked to send a new replacement with accessories, and a prepaid return shipping label for the failed unit. I was very pleased with the helpful attitude of the representative, and the quick willingness to try and make things right. Hopefully Epson's R & D department is hot on the track of an improved design that will lessen the huge number of complaints I've seen posted on the Net.

That's EXACTLY the solution I finally discovered to consistently overcome this problem.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by dscott77 (12/16/05 1:59 PM) + / -
Add me to the growing army of those frustrated with the Epson 300 DVD tray slippage issue. In my case, the thin plastic strip along the leading edge of the tray seems in perfect shape - no kinks, bends, etc. I tried lightly sandpapering the bottom of the tray where the rollers track but that didn't help. I dug out some Realistic (Radio Shack) "Non-Slip" liquid designed for turntable rollers but I still experience the problem. The tray hangs up just as it tries to enter the row of white rollers but an extremely gentle nudge helps it overcome the mysterious "bump" it encounters. Incidentally, I just purchased a R220 (supposedly the same as the 300 but without the reader, screen, etc.) and it appears to have the same, plastic strip-equipped tray. Interestingly, this new tray, when used in my R300, works better but still encounters slight difficulty getting under those white rollers. If I keep my finger lightly on the back of the tray as it begins to move, I can still feel this subtle obstruction. It's as though the row of white rollers don't rise quite enough to ensure smooth entry.

This annoyance is a shame since my 300 does a terrific printing job - when I give the tray a little help.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by dscott77 (12/16/05 2:25 PM) + / -
Since my last post, I've successfully been printing numerous DVDs using the NEW R220 tray in the OLD R300. I have no idea where my receipt is but glady would buy a new $10 trays, as this seems to solve the problem. Google searches and examination of the Epson site reveal no obvious source for a new tray. Those of you who purchased a new tray, where did you get it? Directly from Epson?

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by dscott77 (12/16/05 2:31 PM) + / -
Incidentally, close examination of the new, R220 tray reveals that the clear plastic piece on the leading edge IS slight different: Looking at the piece from the top rear, the left side of the old, troublesome tray is beveled about 45 degrees inward. That same portion of the new tray is straight. I wonder...

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by Anonymous (12/17/05 12:30 AM) + / -
dscott,
The replacement printer Epson promised (and delivered in less than 48 hours) tested out fine. (It included a new cd tray, but of the same old design) However, it was NOT a new printer, as specically mentioned, but a refurbished. Since the one I was having trouble with was brand new, I opted to return the replacement. (From past events, that word "refurb" immediately puts me on edge)

My solution, which has performed beautifully, was to place a strip of cloth medical tape (about 1/2 inch wide) widthwise on the leading edge of the tray, where it begins on the clear lead tab, and ends about even with the top edge of the tapered nose of the tray. I also applied a narrow strip of the same lengthwise along each outer side on the bottom of the tray. The tape adds just enough texture to the surface to act as "non-skid", but still thin enough to not force roller tension out of whack and start having paper-feed begin slipping.

Re: Re: Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by dscott77 (12/17/05 8:21 AM) + / -
I absolutely will try your tape solution. Given my observations of what seems to be happening, the tape on both the leading edge and the bottom of the tray makes perfect sense. While annoying, the glitch is not a show-stopper. Since one has to load a new disk each time, it's a simple matter to nudge it along. Of course, it certainly shouldn't be necessary. Frankly, I'm astonished at how well the Epsons print on appropriate media. For me, that's the matte finish found on, for example, TDK printable DVDs. I'm not as pleased with the silvery surface on some other, printable types. Anyway, I'll call Epson Monday and see if I can get a replacement tray. As noted in a previous post, the identical, but new, tray that came with the R220 has yet to bind in the R300.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by dscott77 (12/19/05 3:24 PM) + / -
Prariecat - In my case, applying tape in both spots didn't help. I removed the top piece - along the leading edge but left two small strips along two well-worn sections of the bottom of the tray. So far, so good. No nudges needed - yet. I'm inclinced to conclude it is a traction problem. The sandpapering I tried previously didn't provide enough. The tape seems to have done the trick.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by dscott77 (12/22/05 3:55 PM) + / -
Alas, the tape trick didn't last. The only thing that consistently works (for me) is the new tray I received with the R220. So, I called Epson, was given the 800 number of a parts supplier and ordered two new DVD trays at $6.95 each (there's a minimum order of $10 so, since these things seems to wear out rather quickly, I snagged a pair). In case anyone wants the toll-free number, it is 1-800-524-8338 and the business is called National Parts Depot. It has a web site (www.nationalparts.com) but I was unable to locate the $6.95 DVD tray so I phoned.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R200 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by dscott77 (1/7/06 12:42 PM) + / -
My previous efforts along those lines with sandpaper didn't do the trick. I'll try your craft knife suggestion but I solved the problem simply by puchased two new DVD trays.

Man, u are the Man!!! It worked for me, I just hope i don't run into the plastic bender thang... If so, i'll try the tape approach. But in all reality, no of us should have to go through such b.s. just to print on a cd, someone should forward this link to the Epson Company. It appears like Epson completly ignored these problems with the tray... They have a test department for sure, but they ignored it, just like the big car companies, turning a blind eye when it comes to a problem with a car that needs to be recalled...

How frustrating is this printer?!

I'm using an IMAC, OSX10.3.9, and spent more than an hour trying to print to the surface of a DVD last Sunday.

But eventually I found that using a number of methods described here solve the problem.

1. Put some Sellotape over the edges of the clear plastic at the end of the CD/DVD tray.

2. Make sure that you don't pull down the CD/DVD drawer on the printer before switching on - it's best to let it do its checks and cleaning routine before you pull the drawer down.

3. In the PRINT menu of the Epson Print CD software there'll be three sub-menus. Make sure you select the following.
i) Layout should be set to Portrait.
ii) Media type, in the Print settings sub menu, should be set to CD/DVD.
iii) When you select the summary option, it should look like this:

Print Settings
Version: 1.75
Page Setup: Standard
Media Type: CD/DVD
Print Quality: Best Photo
High Speed: Off
Color: Color Controls
Copies & Pages
Copies: 1, Collated
Page Range: All
Layout
Layout Direction: Left-Right-Top-Bottom
Pages Per Sheet: 1
Two Sided Printing: Off
Output Options
Print to: Printer
Scheduler
Print Document: Now
Paper Handling
Printing order: Reverse
Print: All pages
ColorSync
Color Conversion: Standard
Profile: SPR200 R210 Standard
Quartz Filter: None

Hi there all,

Linty has hit the nail on the head!!

Make sure there is enough room behind the printer!

6-8inches should do it as the tray feeds through a slot in the back.

Also cures r300 problems

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Photo R320/CD-DVD Problems by Anonymous (3/21/06 10:04 PM) + / -
Gordon,
You hit the nail on the head. Most of these problems probably are tray problems but if the sensor can't read the stop points it WILL NOT WORK! Brand new R320 after printing about 40 disks and maybe 100 papers only a month old I started getting paper jams and CD part was none existant. I got the go on ripping it apart and only got 50% threw it and I just couldn't find that sensor. I knew there was one somewhere but what a stupid idea to put it around the print heads. But when I read your message it makes perfect sence to put it there because it has to be there to line up on the moving CD tray. After putting it back together the paper started working for some odd reason but the CD tray would pop back out and say not alined or something like that. Read your message and got out about 30 Q Tips and started blind cleaning under the left side of the print head. There is something on the outside of the head that looks like it could be a light but that is not it I'm guessing because I cleaned the heck out of it and that didn't do it. You have to go directly under the head about a half inch I figure till you hit it. I cleaned it under there pretty good fired it up and walla. WORKING! If your printer head takes a look at the left side of the tray over the alinement arrows and then sends the tray out and gives you a alinement problem it is probably a dirty sensor.
Thanks Gordon. Nice to see another ripper out there!

OK. I might be user number 13,000 to respond to this CD tray problem, but after reading (or at least scanning) every one of the posts above, I did not find this particular problem and solution. When my office was downstairs I had just a very small space in which to work. I was constantly bumping into things every time I moved my chair. Well, I finally ran into the CD tray while it was printing on a DVD. Needless to say, the results were less than satisfactory. The DVD print job was ruined and the CD tray was pushed so that it was askew by about a millimeter. That's not a whole lot, granted, but it was just enough to put a small nick into the center tab of the mylar guide. That tiny nick was all it took to begin causing me the same problem of not pulling in the CD tray on its own. Finally, after inspecting the mylar strip many times, I saw the nick. I ran the mylar strip through my fingers several times while using my fingernails to drag across the indentation until I could no longer feel a difference in the surface of the tab. And, wonder of wonders, it works perfectly again. You can bet that I was extremely careful of how and when I scooted around in my chair. I have since moved upstairs to a much larger area. You couldn't possibly guess that my printer is now nowhere near my chair.

In summary, if any of you has ever bumped the tray (as I did) or dropped it or in any other way banged that mylar strip, you might want to check it for nicks and dings. Use a magnifying glass to see or use your fingers to feel for one. Mine was VERY small. If you find one, try smoothing it out and see if helps you, too.

Good luck, all!

Thanks,
You have the solution! So simple I bet most people wouldn't think space behind the printer could be a problem. Especially since so many are desk space conscious and will put the printer as far back as possible - like me.

Epson Stylus Photo R220 - Paper/CD-DVD Problems by fixit100 (3/30/06 5:30 PM) + / -
I went through three of these (OK, one went back within a day due to a HALF OFF rebate from another source), but on the R220 if you can find a "high serial number" comes with a -different- CD tray. No Mylar strip at all! It has solid "tabs" in two areas on the end and works flawlessly.

I do however have another problem, I just can NOT get the yellow head to clear up (or stay clear). I do use a third party "continuous ink system", but I don't think it is the culprit.

I have some head cleaner, and I did try dripping some drops on the spindle that pokes into the cart, but that didn't do it. What is (or send me to a decent thread here) the best proceedure to flush that puppy out? I have the SCC util but even it won't bust through this thing either.

My tray would not load at all.

I ripped of that clear strip off the front of the tray, including the bit underneath it (dont forget that!!)

Then i got a wood file (yes i know) and filled a flat edge on the end of the tray, deburring it with a knife.

Now works, but what a piece of sh**, only had it 3 months, done about 300 discs

Since I actually read the manual, I knew that you needed the space behind the printer.

As for the other problems with the tray feeding ... me too. I'll try some gaffers tape and see what that does before I buy a couple of redesigned trays.

I think I've found a rock-solid fix for the Epson CD tray problem, and the solution is some medium grit sand paper and a can of "Plastic Tool Handle Spray." First, flip the CD tray over on the table, and roughen up the entire bottom side of it. Clean it thoroughly. Now, with the little plastic fingers [that go in first] facing away from you, mask the LEFT half of the tray's underside with masking or duct tape. Give the right [unmasked side] several generous coats of the this plastic tool handle spray, letting it dry between coats. When all is thoroughly dry, carefully remove the masking tape. You should now have a rough surface on the LEFT underside, and a nice coating of this rubber on the RIGHT side which, when you now flip it over for use, it's the left underside that has the rubber grip coating on it. Put your CD in, insert the tray, align the arrows, and the new high-grip under-surface allows the printer's rollers to push it in all by itslef. I've printed hundreds of CDs and DVDs since doing this, and I've not had a misfeed yet!

Try it.

We were at our wits end trying to print on the DVD's we made, then we read your message about having the printer 6 ins out from the wall, and low and behold it worked we are now back printing again, the tray does go right through out the back of the printer so it is important to keep it at least 6 inches from the wall.

Go to FILE, select PRINT. go to below PRESETS, then PRINT SETTINGS. Under MEDIA TYPE, select CD/DVD.

Good luck, it worked for us after hours of trying to fix.

I messed around with this all night. I was so angry. I kept getting that stupid message to realign my feeder. Tried a keyword Google search and landed here. Glad I did. Pull the stupid printer away from the wall. Works like a charm. No thanks to the assh*les at Epson or Staples.

Hello this site has been a life saver i was at my wits end trying to find out what was wrong with this printer and with reading your posts its fixed. I was trying to print onto cd's but hadn't left enough room at the back for the tray to go through and it kept saying tray not loaded. I moved it out from the wall and bingo worked first time... Thanks for helping me :)

Dear reader,
In April of 2006 we purchased new computer and printer happy with our old Epson 440 we opted for the R220 as with three young children who use it frequently for H/W we thought this to be the easiest option. How wrong we were!!! From day one we had a job loading the paper correctly I have to keep tapping itdown to slide through and now it just graps the paper to the right every time and does not print. After reading this web site it seems I am not the only one. Epson told me to take it 8 miles to my nearest repair centre they would pay for the repairs or replace it with the same model!! To do this again, I thought surely not. She said they have not had one complaint of this nature and I would have to pay if I wanted a different printer and my guarantee would expire in April 07 and if this printer does the same there is nothing they can do !!What great service I may contact consumer advice. Great after sales care from Epson!!

Thank you so much for your post.....

For the past two months, I've been struggling trying to get a Continuous Ink Feed sys to work (it didn't); dealing with the mess bad refilled carts made and now trying to get my printer to print to a DVD.

Like everyone else here; my 320 kept rejecting the tray.

Based on your post, I went to a local drugstore and bought foam tipped applicators to clean and dry the sensor you described and voilą - tray accepted and printing commenced.

So ends my saga.....

Thanks
