 | Epson 1280 by Bob Riggs (12/29/04 7:46 AM) reply | + / - | I have a problem with my 3Yr old 1280 printer head sliding across the carrage in a jerkey way. The printer was working great untill I replaced the black ink, then I got a solid red LED only after the 1280 did it's calabration & claan on the new Epson caratage. I don't know what to do, if I needed to clean it, put a second cartrage in? I have unpluged the printer over night but still have the same problem, any suggestions? Thanks Bob...............

 | Re: Epson 1280 by Denny Conway (12/29/04 10:30 AM) reply | +1 + / - | Bob: Although it's possible your printer has an electronic or mechanical failure, the most common problem is that the Carriage Assembly is simply DIRTY and or DRY, causing it to stick and slide in that jerky motion that you described. That usually results in the printer loosing track of just where the Print Cartridge Holder Assembly is actually at and that can cause the Error Light/Led to come on. Sometimes when the printer looses track of where that assembly is at, it then keeps telling that assembly to keep moving and can even cause it to slam into the end of the printer. Try wiping off all around the round metal carriage bar or shaft [that the Print Cartridge Holder assembly moves back-n-forth on], with a lint free cloth. Also clean the outside of the metal bushings with Q-Tips, that the carriage bar passes thru, on both sides of the cartridge holder assembly. You can also use alcohol on the cloth, if there is a lot of build-up on the carriage shaft/bar. Then lube the metal bar on both sides of the holder assembly, slightly with a precision oiler, not a spray lubrication, or the appropriate grease thats used on some of the newer models [C40UX, C62]. A drop or two of a Teflon based lubrication or Tri-Flo lube is best on the older models of Epson Printers. Manually slide the holder assembly back and forth to spread out the lubrication and wipe of any excess lube or blackish build-up that appears on the bar. Look for an e-mail message from me with more in-depth information, that might help you in that area. You can check out this link, supplied by WES, to see different lubrications: http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/oil.html ...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Re: Epson 1280 jerky/loose carriage head by AnnieSu (11/29/05 10:37 AM) reply | + / - | Hello, I am having a similar problem with my carriage head, being jerky but also very loose. At first it made a weird noise like a screw had fallen out or something. Now I just get the red warning button and I can't move the head at all. Did you cleanit using alcohol as advised by Denny; then how did you lube it? Did you just move the head back and forth by hand? If I did that it would have to be forced I'm afraid...thanks, ann

 | Re: Epson 1280 by printerrepairpros (11/29/05 4:20 PM) reply | + / - | Check to make sure that neither of the brass carriage bushings has fallen out of the carriage. They have a tendancy to do so if proper lubrication of the carriage rod has not been kept up. Hope this helps
|
 | Re: Re: Epson 1280 by AnnieSu (11/29/05 5:59 PM) reply | + / - | Thanks for your help but...was I supposed to be lubricating the carriage rod? How exactly do you do this? I can't really get in to see what's going on with carriage bushings; where are they? The carriage isn't moving at all, so should I unscrew the bottom or...? Is there a manual that describes this stuff better? THANK you very much! ann

 | Re: Epson 1280 by printerrepairpros (11/30/05 9:43 AM) reply | + / - | AnnieSu, Take off the top cover by removing the screws at the back and under the lid. The carriage lock may be engaged. It is a small white hook under the front of the carriage. Pull it towards the front and the carriage should slide. Look at the bearings on both sides of the carriage. Push them back in place. Clean the carriage rod (we just use a clean lint free cloth). Relubricate the rod on both sides of the carriage with 2-3 drops of gum free oil such as sewing machine oil. Hope this helps.

|
 | Re: Epson 1280 by printerrepairpros (4/20/06 11:27 AM) reply | + / - | We get it from the sewing machine department at Sears. We like theirs because the shape of the bottle makes for accurate placement of the oil. Hope this helps.

They appear on the head cleaning check print out, photos, word documents etc. They are perfectly straight and run edge-to-edge. So far I have tried the following: 1. cleaned the print heads (several times) 2. tried the alignment utility 3. uninstalled and reinstalled the printer software, drivers and updated downloads 4. changed the color ink cartridge. 5. Cleaned the inside of the printer. Any ideas? Fiona

 | Re: Epson 1280 by fmclaren (4/26/06 10:06 AM) reply | + / - | Before I spent another $100 on a 5 year old printer, I uninstalled and reinstalled the software again, although this time I did not install the Status Monitor and other 1280 XP updates. The problem seems to have disappeared.

 | Re: Epson 1280 super-noisy when printing by alfred leslie (5/1/06 9:43 AM) reply | + / - | Printer sounds like a jackhammer when printing. Before that had error message. Did not note what it said. Replugged to a different outlet then unplugged and replugged computer connection. Now prints but makes this terrible racket. Expect any moment to stop again.
Many thanks for any clues here

Good morning and Greeting from Houston, TX.
I have an Epson 1280 Photo printer.
When I go to the Epson Stylus Photo 1280 Properties Window.
I then select Printing Preferences....
The windows that come up, is grayed out in the Ink Levels

T007 & Color T009.
My printers setting are Ink: Color. Mode: Automatic.
I have a check in the Epson Natural color Box.
I have a check in Print Preview Box.
I have an Epson Version 5.21/P.
Both Red & Green Lights are steady on the front of the printer.
Thanks for you help in advance.

 | Re: Epson 1280 - replacing print head by DavidB (1/31/07 8:24 PM) reply | + / - | Print head on my Epson 1280 appears hopelessly clogged and my local repair shop, who cleaned it last year, now recommends replacing it. Is this a job I could do myself - being a reasonably competent tinkerer - and have you any tips about how to do it and where to get the replacement head?
Also, how to stop it happening again? My printer lives in Tucson, in a very dry climate, maybe this is part of the problem?
|
 | Re: Epson 1280 by David, UK (2/1/07 9:22 AM) reply | + / - | Quayle, it sounds like the waste ink "protection counter" has reached its limit and needs resetting. With the printer power button off, press and keep holding in both the paper roll and ink buttons, then press the power button and within 3 seconds as the lights flash release both buttons and then press the paper roll button in for 10 seconds until the lights go firm. This resets the counter but remember the waste ink pad may still need renewing or cleaning otherwise waste ink may overflow from the casing. If this button pressing does not sort it, then it may be that the DE lock lever has come out of its sockets. This can happen if the printer is dropped or knocked. The DE lever is a white plastic rod behind the cartridge parking area and needs the top cover removing to gain access.
Both the protection counter and DE lever faults are likely to display the same "fatal error" symptons.
|
 | Re: Re: Epson 1280 by Anonymous (2/1/07 12:40 PM) reply | + / - | My 1280 goes through the motions of printing but no ink is on the paper. I did get a "fatal error" as I remember and I did wash out the ink pads, replaced them and reset the printer. I also ran a "power cleaning" and "normal cleaning" using the SSC, but still no ink. I did do the syringe but no ink. You mentioned the DE lock lever; is this the white rod that sticks up under the printer head? I did remove the print head to clean the print head. Is there something I may had done wrong? Help. I am using a CIS. Leslie

 | Re: Epson 1280 by David, UK (2/1/07 4:37 PM) reply | + / - | Leslie, the DE lever is a white plastic rod behind the cartridge parking area and needs the top cover removing to gain access. It is not visible with the top casing in place and is not the white peg which pops up when the cartridge carrier is parked. If the printer is doing everything as it should except putting ink on paper then it is not a DE lever problem. If it suddenly stopped putting ink on paper during a print run or very shortly after last printing OK without being left to dry out, rather than after a printhead removal for cleaning, then I think the fuse F1 on the mainboard may have failed or maybe a cable connection is the problem. There are other causes for this problem. Please see my link to the other thread for some more ideas on head cleaning.

 | Re: Epson 1280 by Lcunha4 (2/1/07 7:50 PM) reply | + / - | When I turn the printer on it charges the jet as it would normally. The ink cartridge goes all the way to the left side and then returns to the right side as thought it is ready to start printing. As soon as it stops charging the jet the red maintenance light and the power light both start to flash and the printer does nothing. When I run the "Status Monitor" it gives the following message: "Check all connections and make sure all devices are on. If the power was turned off during printing, cancel the print job. If the error does not clear, see your printer documentation." I have been in touch with the people at Epson and they sent me this: "POWER LIGHT AND ERROR LIGHT FLASH - as soon as printer is turned on. An unknown printer error has occurred. Turn the printer off, disconnect the interface cable and turn the printer back on. If error disappears, turn the printer off, reconnect the interface cable and turn the printer back on. If error continues then please respond back so we can continue to assist you. If printer returns to normal the issue is resolved." I tried doing the whole disconnect thing and there is still no change. So now they're saying I should take it to a repair centre however the closest one is +/- 200km away. This unit is 4 + years old should I just forget it and buy a new one? Or do you think it would be an easy fix?
|
 | Re: Epson 1280 by David, UK (2/2/07 5:19 AM) reply | + / - | Download the SSC utility and do the protection counter reset. It may sort it and until you try it there is little point in trying anything else. BTW, please keep the same ID throughout the thread as it can get confusing thinking that someone else is looking for assistance.

 | Epson 1280 prints partial image by thorpedo (2/2/07 3:11 PM) reply | + / - | My Epson 1280 has been printing part of the image then ejecting the sheet. This happens on large 13x19 sheets which is very annoying and costly. Any suggestions?

 | EPSON 1280 head utility HELP by tony@allsyst.com (6/21/07 10:09 AM) reply | + / - | Hi all.. i am a printer repair guy and have replaced many epson print heads. the 1280 requires a utility to record the idosyncracies of the print head into its rom. I have not done a printer yet that has needed this and have been told by auth. epson folks that it needs to be done or the pritner will print like crap.. can someone verify this and tell me where i can get a copy of this so i can fix this customers 1280? i appreciate the help that i anxiously await! tony@allsyst.com

 | Re: Epson 1280 by printerrepairpros (6/21/07 10:29 AM) reply | + / - | Tony, For optimum performance you need to input the head voltage id. The printer will function without this calibration, but not at its best. To the best of my knowledge, the adjustment program is only available to Epson authorized service centers such as us. Sorry, we are not able to provide a copy lest we jeopardize our relationship with Epson. Hope this helps. Howard Printer Repair Pros Incorporated

 | Re: Epson 1280 stopped putting ink on paper by Prof H (7/20/08 12:20 PM) reply | + / - | Due to a vexing problem of random black ink smudge lines at the very bottom of 13 x 19 borderless prints, I resorted to removing the print head to clean the carriage. I have done this before successfully & not disconnected the wires.
This time after reassembly, the printer printed two weak test pages with the remaining ink in the heads, and won't print anything else since. I have tried cleaning & recharging with the service program, as well as resetting the ink counter.
Getting nowhere, I tried a known good print head, which acts exactly the same in this printer, so I conclude that something has gone wrong with a fuse, the main board or a connection. Any ideas? Thanks, GCH

 | Re: Epson 1280 by Anonymous (7/20/08 10:25 PM) reply | + / - | Does it suck ink through the cap assembly. Put some water on the cap assembly, run a cleaning cycle, then determine whether the ink has been sucked away. If not, the problem is with the pump, cap assembly or the tube connecting them. Hope this helps.
|
 | Re: Re: Epson 1280 by Prof H (7/21/08 11:29 AM) reply | + / - | That sounds like the problem with the ink blobs since when the bushings jumped out of this printer, the little tube became disconnected & I thought I had got it back in the pump OK since it seemed to pump by hand, but maybe not.
Anyway, the immediate problem is what might be wrong with the mainboard as no ink is being printed.
Thanks very much for the cap assembly suggestion. GCH

 | i too have the same problem by wei (4/18/09 9:11 PM) reply | + / - | bought a second hand one,
when i turn it on, the ink carraige slides across jerkily and slides back jerkily a few times, leaving trails of ink on the metal rod, ive cleaned it and lubed it,
still happens?
Any thoughts???
|
 | Re: Epson 1280 by Anonymous (4/18/09 9:36 PM) reply | + / - | Look for brass bushings on the ends of the guide shaft. They usually fall out of the carriage and cause that problem. Glue them back in and that will usually fix the problem.
|
 | Re: Epson 1280 by wei (4/18/09 9:55 PM) reply | + / - | hm ive opened the cover, the brass bushings are all intact, are they meant to be at the end of the guide shafts ? (they are) the ink carraige keeps leaving ink trails and smudges on the guide shaft too though?
It's still being jerky, and as i guide the ink carraige with my hand, i notice it's jerky and bumpy because it gets caught on the little black covers for the metal wheels.. as in the thing that moves the paper roller underneath?
|
 | Re: Epson 1280 by wei (4/18/09 10:51 PM) reply | + / - | OH
i've managed to get it working!!
I just had to put the brass bushing into the print carriage..because i received my printer with them at the ends of the metal rod i thought thats where they were meant to be.
now to see if it prints properly....
|
 | Re: Epson 1280 by Anonymous (4/18/09 10:51 PM) reply | + / - | No, they go in the carriage. They usually fall out of the carriage. Look where the guide shaft runs through the carriage. That is where the bushings go. Right now the carriage wiggles. It is not supposed to.
|
 | Re: Epson 1280 by wei (4/18/09 11:04 PM) reply | + / - | oh yes, thanks for the advice.
There IS still one more thing, the ink carriage still leaves a trail of ink across the guide shaft? why is this?
and especially around the end of the guide, it builds up a lot
|
 | Re: Epson 1280 by Wes (4/18/09 11:30 PM) reply | + / - | Probably spilled ink from transit or something. It is not normal to leak ink from the carriage so something unusual is causing that. I would let the printer sit a few daya and see if you see any ink pooling or if it stops leaving ink trails.

 | Re: Epson 1280 by Montana Edd (4/28/09 2:32 PM) reply | + / - | For anyone. I have a new 1280 print head. Never installed nor used. I purchased it when I had picked up a used 1280. Found out the printer did not print. Purchased the print head from Epson for $114.oo. In the mean time I eturned the 1280 to supplier. Checked with the head seller and they have the non-return clause. So head has been sitting. $5.00 to pay for shipping and it's yours.

I have changed to different custom sizes, I have deleted all custom sizes and re-entered them, I have re-installed the print driver, I have changed top margin setting, but nothing has solved the problem. Any help much appreciated.
