Epson CX5200 by Marie (12/27/04 9:10 AM) reply + / -
I've had my Epson CX5200 printer for about 1 1/2 years now and since right after the warranty expired (from reading this board it happens A LOT!)I started having problems with it. I was able to fix it and it was working fine for the last few months. The little tube that carries ink had come disconnected. Your site was a godsend for fixing that problem. However, now I am having a different problem. Whenever I try to print (and it seems to get worse if the ink levels fall below 10 or even 20%) I get blank pages. The only way I can get a half-way decent page to print (and it only works for black) is to set my printer preferences to the best print setting I can (which is usually reserved for photographs). This, of course, uses a lot of ink. I've tried cleaning the heads several times, doing a nozzle check, re-aligning etc. and nothing seems to help. I used to be able to print the most gorgeous photographs from this printer when it was new, now it doesn't work well at all! Help!
Have you heard of this problem? Is it just time to get a new printer? Thanks!

Marie: I'm sorry, but I'm not actually framiliar with, or even trained on the newer Epson Printers, so I cannot really be of much actual help to you. The only thing I can even recommend is that you try downloading new Printer Drivers directly from epson.com, just in case your old drivers are corrupted and possibly causing problems. Bad or corrupted drivers can cause many problems. You can delete your printer and its drivers and then download the latest available drivers from the Epson Home Page at http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/index.jsp . As drivers are FREE, I usually recommend trying those first, just in case you might have a possible communication problem. DEINSTALL [remove] your old printers first and then go to the epson.com web-site. Click-on your particular area, where you live [example: USA]. Then click-on DRIVERS AND SUPPORT and then click-on your particular type of Epson Printer [example: INKJET]. Look under the Ink Jet Printers for your "Epson Stylus CX5200" and click-on it. Once the DRIVERS & DOWNLOAD PAGE opens, read the INFORMATION to locate your particular SYSTEM [Win's 95,98,ME,2000.etc.] and then click-on it. Follow the directions and read all the available information concerning your systems driver downloads. Finally at the bottom of the page, click-on "Printer Software Installation for Windows ___ [Epson Printers]", or the "Download" option button. After the downloading utility opens, read the download information available, make your choices and complete the installation...You did not say if you were actually using Generic or Third-Party ink cartridges or not. If you are actually using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges, then its always possible that its the ink you are using. Unfortunatly, not all Generic & Third-Party ink & ink cartridges are made the same and none of them actually contain the right formulation of ink, for the Epson Printers [formula is patented by Epson Company]. Some are probably close and seem to be better than others, but some simply can clog-up or even damage the Printhead Assemblies on Epson Printers. Epson Ink Jet Printers are one of the few printers on the market that seem to have so many problems with non-manufactors inks, especially the newer models made in the last couple of years. Its because the Epson Printers use a completely different printhead inking system than most other brands of printers. Most, if not all of the other manufactors, use thermal or bubble jetprint heads and because the other brands use a totally different system, they don't seem to have as many problems using refilled inks or non-manufactor's ink cartridges. Printer manufacters do not make available their ink formulation and in most cases, the formulation is patented. Any difference in the ink formulation can actually cause clogging in the small printhead nozzles or damage other critical components. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair, so you can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. Its even possible that some brands of Non-Epson Ink Cartridges may not always be recognized by the newer models of Epson Printers, because of the inexpensive and or incompatable Electrical Chips that are mounted on some brands of Generic or Third-Party ink cartridges. Sometimes you will even get Error Messages up on your Monitors screen, telling you that you are actually using a Non-Epson Ink Cartridge, or that your printer cannot recognize the cartridge that you installed. Sometimes the Ink Level Indicator, on your Status Monitor, will not show an actual ink level, but may indicate a cartridge error or problem instead...I hope someone thats actually framiliar with your "CX5200", reads your posted message and can help you further...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: Epson CX5200 by Marie (12/31/04 7:49 AM) reply + / -
Thanks for the info. However, that did not fix the problem. Is it possible that the print head needs cleaning? When we had the problem with the tube coming off, it worked for a while but it left a mess.

Re: Epson CX5200 by Denny Conway (1/3/05 10:00 AM) reply + / -
Marie: There's no way for me to know if in-depth cleaning of the Printhead Assembly will help or not. However, if the underside area of the printhead assembly is actually built-up with dust, dirt, lint and hair, that foreign material can stick to the wet ink on the Printhead Assembly and that can cause copy quality related problems. Check for a couple of e-mails from me that should help in that area, just in case you want to do that in-depth cleaning and at least eliminate that possibility...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Okay, just wanted to share something weird with you. I haven't gotten a chance to clean the print heads yet. However, my Cyan cartridge ran out of ink (from all of those attempts to print something). I changed the cartridge and now I am getting a better printout. It's still a little faded though. I checked the levels on my other cartridges and they are almost full. Black is the only one that is low, at 10%. I do not remember having poor printout when the cartridges were low when the printer was new. Is this something to expect? Should I not wait until the cartridge is completely empty before replacement? Should I be replacing at, let's say, 10%? Please advise.

Marie: I'm sorry, but I don't really have an answer for you on that question. I am not actually trained on and have not really worked on any of the newer "CX" models. I don't even recall having previously read about that problem or statement, on this Printer Repair Site. I hope someone else that may have some additional information on that subject, reads your postings and replies back to you...Denny Conway

hey, marie!
i have some bad news...

i've been having the same problem!
i replaced the cartridge which was less than 10% full,
but the problem didn't go away.

in my case at least, it would make sense that
the problem isn't caused by a lack of ink,
because none of the other cartridges
(which aren't close to being empty)
were printing correctly either.

so... i'm afraid that
we'll both have to get our printers repaired/replaced.
*sigh*

I have been having a similar problem with my cx5200. I have replaced two sets of ink cartridges full of ink thinking the ink was the problem. To date i have not been able to get two colours to print this has been about a month or more now. Head have been cleaned countless times and also used nozzle cleaning and nothing works what do i do.

Re: Epson CX5200 by marie (1/11/05 6:47 AM) reply + / -
This is soooooo frustrating. Yesterday I was able to print something off the internet (all black text) and it came out perfect. Today, nothing! Just gray and streaky. I don't get it why it is working intermittently now. When this printer was new I could print pictures that rivaled photographs. It was great. Now, only a year and half later, yuck. I do know that I will not recommend nor will I EVER purchase another Epson product again. They do not stand by their products whatsoever. This problem started literally weeks out of warranty and I was basically told "tough luck". I could send it back in and for $75 they could look at it. I only paid about $125 for the printer. I guess I learned my lesson and will research better next time.

Re: Epson CX5200 by bethchen (1/11/05 6:53 AM) reply + / -
hey, ruth!
is your printer still under warranty?
if so, you could call the epson people.

Re: Epson CX5200 by bethchen (1/11/05 6:58 AM) reply + / -
well...
you know what they say...
inkjet printers are cheap, but they really get you with the expensive ink cartridges.

perhaps in the future, you might consider getting a laser printer?
there's a really high fixed cost. but if the printer lasts long enough, you'll get long-term savings from the toner (several cents per page).

That might be the way to go. Thanks!

Marie,

I have the same problem as you and am as frsutated.

Where is this little tube that carries the ink? I want to try that before I throw my printer away.

Thanks!

Re: Epson CX5200 by Denny Conway (1/13/05 10:19 AM) reply + / -
Pablo: You might want to check out the "Dura Brite Blank Output Information Page", at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html . That site may help you identify that tube, where it is located and what is needed to usually reconnect it...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: Epson CX5200 by Anthony (1/14/05 4:19 AM) reply + / -
Many thanks to Pablo. I was able to identify and replace the ink purge tube on my CX5200 and guess what! it now works a treat. Unfortunately I have recently replaced this printer with a HP 2610 all-in-one printer because my experiences with seperate head printers (Cannon & Epson) has led me to beleive that combined Cartridge / Ink cartridges must be the best option. Does anyone in South Wales (UK) want to buy a second hand Epson CX5200???

Re: Epson CX5200 by DODGE66 (1/16/05 1:12 PM) reply+4 + / -
Scanner error on cx5200. scanner is not locked and fluorescent light works. When device is turned on scanner goes through its checks i.e. moves and light goes on, then after a couple of minutes error light comes on to say scanner error refer to manual. Epsons reply was to say its an hardware fault. But thay would not be more specific than that. Pity the device is just out of warranty. any ideas what the problem might be. anybody had the same problem if so how much to rectify

Re: Epson CX5200 by JohnT. (1/18/05 6:33 AM) reply + / -
Folks, we are being screwed. I and my sister both purchased CX5200 about 4 months apart. I was changing the Ink cartridge for the second time and it appears the head has clooged. We went through the nozzle check, cleaning, alignment etc.., yet we still get nothing except a cyan line. My sister gets Nothing and this was the first time she replaced her cartridges. Epson tech support did nothing really, but they were nice? Big deal. They offered my sister a deal on a replacement printer with a $50 rebate that is available to all. We went through 3+ ink cartridges trying to get this junk to print. And Comp USA only says "did you buy the warranty?" To a frustrated consumer it is the equivilant of "You want fries with that?" What a hose job by Epson. Can anyone say Class Action? My printer was a little over 13 months old.

Re: Epson CX5200 by Joel (1/18/05 1:05 PM) reply + / -
Glad to hear my CX5200 is not the only one that's “hosed”. It appears my print head is clogged. I am wondering if I can disassemble the head and run it through an ultrasonic cleaner (like the ones use for jewelry), if that would clean out any clogs. Or would that make matters worse. I used to use the ultrasonic cleaner to clean rapidiograph pens, back in the days before CAD. - Does anyone have disassembly instructions to pull out the print head? - I thought my using Universal replacement inks (1/10th the cost) had something to do with this issue, however, after hearing from you all, I won’t factor that in.

Thanks,
Joel

Re: Epson CX5200 by Denny Conway (1/18/05 1:17 PM) reply + / -
Joel: I don't recommend actually removing the printhead assembly, because its easy to damage and its also easy to throw off the factory settings. It's possible that you may even have an actual hardware/parts problem [failing Printhead Assembly or Main Board Assembly], but normally the most common problem is clogging of the Printhead Nozzles, especially if you were actually using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges. You might want to try using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution, available through fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson , but it will only help, if there is an actual clogged printhead assembly. When it opens, click-on "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution" thats listed for your particular printer. The Epson solution sells for around $10.00 plus shipping. It includes a syringe and some Epson printhead cleaning solution, which is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson inks. This is the same chemical used by Epson in their service department. You can try it if you want to and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again, but that will only help if they are actually clogged. It was basically designed by Epson Company for use on their older models of ink jet printers, but people have been using it on the newer models, with success reported. IF YOU DECIDE TO, TRY THE "EPSON STYLUS HEAD CLEANING SOLUTION", JUST REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force on the plunger of the syringe. Damage can even occur when you are using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. To much force/pressure can damage the little tubes inside the Nozzle Assembly and then it will never work again. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to dissolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never dissolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. Again, if the cleaning fluids don't help, then its generally time to invest in a new printer. In some more expensive printers, you may want to get an estimate to replace the printhead assembly, but as a general rule, its not really economical to do in the smaller Epson Ink Jet style printers. You can generally buy a new small printer cheaper than you can have your old one repaired for. EXAMPLE: The printhead assembly in the "C80" Printer sells for around $120 to $130. There is a REVIEW of the "Printhead Cleaning Solution", as well as general "Printhead Cleaning Instructions", that is available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/EKR.html ...Good Luck! Joel...Just so you will know: If your printers red ink light is not actually on, but it still will not print in black or colors [even though your cartridges have ink in them], then its possible that you may have a different problem, which unfortunatly seems to be quite common on the CX5200 Printer. If there is no actual red ink light on and you were to do a search on this Printer Repair Site, you would see that you are not alone in your problem. I've read several posted messages on this Printer Repair Site on just that particular problem [new ink cartridges installed and now won't print at all]. I recommend that you do a general search on the "fixyourownprinter.com" printer repair site, under your CX5200 printer and then you can read about other peoples experiences, their advise and even what they have tried, sometimes successfully. It seems like most of the problems are not actually related to clogging, or even a bad or empty ink cartridge, but is usually more of a Hardware/Parts Failure, but no way for me to really know. It seems to happen most of the time, just by simply repacing the ink cartridges, as normal. You might want to check out the "Dura Brite Blank Output Information Page", at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html . It seems like most of the problems are not actually related to clogging, or even a bad or empty ink cartridge, but is usually more of a Hardware/Parts Failure, but no way for me to really know. The most common failure seems to happen most of the time, just by simply repacing the ink cartridges, or simply happens during normal use of the printer. The most common problem found on some of the newer "C" & "CX" printers, is the tubing on the cap assembly becomes disconnected. The cap assembly can't clean the print head if the tube is detached. That information page may be of some help on your printers possible problem, if that tube has actually come off. I know this information does not really give you that much to go on, but I felt you should know about other peoples reports, just in case it happens to apply in your case...There is an "EPSON CX5200 Error/Trouble Shooting Page", located at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/cx5200TS1.html and http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/cx52001.html, that may be helpful. Thanks Denny for the quick response. It seems a worth while effort to try the head cleaning solution, since the cost isn't too high. Meanwhile, I'll use my son's printer that used to me mine. . . If I can't fix the Epson, I'll go back to Canon. It takes the refills with no problem, and keeps on runnin'

My gosh I can not believe what I am reading here!

I have the same problem...I had a re-fill type cartridge, it leaked, it was alcohol based, I used alcohol wipes to clean. I pulled the head assembly out, cleaned, reinstalled, still nothing. The print came out without color, black seemed to work, then after my attempted clean job, the pages then came out blank. I then took the machine in to my local dealer service department. The technician removed the printer head, soaked in a Epson cleaning solution, reinstalled, same problem. I am told it is the refilled cartridges I used mixed with the Epson OE ink cartriges, it does not work, not recommended. I am told I need to replace the head, a $ 200 ( cdn ) cost, vrs the $ 139 I paid for it new at Costcos. But what I see here I cannot blame the refill ink people, not really, looks as though my 13 month old CX5200 Epson is know to develope this very same fault. I am going to look for this tube thing. Thanks.

Derek

Re: Epson CX5200 by Denny Conway (1/18/05 4:21 PM) reply + / -
Derek: At this point, there's no way to know for sure what went wrong and you already have plenty of previously posted info to refer too, just on this particular message board. I can tell you that not all Generic & Third-Party [Non-Epson] ink & ink cartridges are made the same and none of them actually contain the right formulation of ink, for the Epson Printers [formula is patented by Epson Company]. Sometimes the Ink Level Indicator, on your Status Monitor, will not show an actual ink level, but may indicate a cartridge error or problem instead. Unfortunatly, there is no way to make your Epson Printer use that Non-Epson Ink Cartridge, if it cannot actually recognize it...Basically, if you must use the cheaper, non-manufactors inks in your printer, then I would advise you not to buy an Epson Printer...Denny Conway

Same problem as everyone else.

a little over 13 months. i replaced the carttrdiges with genuine epson ink. Soon thereafter the print quality went from bad (streaky and very light) to non-existent (blank pages). I also tried everything from nozzle cleaning to re-alignment. i am so sick of tech that only lasts a year.

Re: Epson CX5200 by Denny Conway (1/19/05 9:14 AM) reply + / -
sheasway22: Its a disposable world anymore, even if we don't agree with it or like it. People want and buy inexpensive ink jet printers from almost ALL MANUFACTORS, at a tremendous rate. The small inexpensive ink jet printer, is basically reguarded as being more or less disposable in the Printer World, especially anything under $100. Unfortunatly, its also starting to look like most printers under $150 are getting to be more or less disposable, as well. Think about it, you can usually buy a new printer cheaper than you can have your old printer repaired for, or at least close to the price. Today you can almost but a new inexpensive printer, cheaper than you can replace the ink cartridges for. People just don't want to pay for quality anymore, so all companies produce the cheap small ink jet printers. To keep those prices so low, quality is sacrificed and options are given up. Thats one of the reasons some new printers only have a 90 day warranty and it sometimes seems like they are lucky to last that long. Printers were more expensive just a few years ago, but they were also built better and seemed to last longer. I know we get what we pay for, but it's still a shame...Denny Conway

hello all,

If the tube is disconnected will i see ink somewhere in side the printer. Mine will not print anything at all. So it might be the tube problem, but i don't see any ink leaking out inside the printer. Should I see ink some where?

Re: Epson CX5200 by moe (1/21/05 3:03 PM) reply + / -
No you won't see any ink. Just power the printer on and when the cartridges move, pull the plug. Slide the cartridges to the left and you'll see the service station. There are some wipers on top that you can just push over to the right and you'll see the disconnected tube. We had one last week that wouldn't stay on. We used a little bit of silicon sealant and that did the trick.

Re: Epson CX5200 by keith hartley (1/21/05 3:16 PM) reply + / -
Thank you very much,

I did as you said and it is the tube not connected that is my problem. Thanks to you I did not take the whole thing apart to find that out. But, do I have to take it apart to fix it, I can not see where to reconnect the tube, but i can see it is not connected. Can I reconnect it without taking it appart?

Thanks again,

I am having exactly the same problem. I find the little tube is disconnected, but I cannot, without having a bit more room, hold both the tube and the little black thing that fits into the tube tightly enough to get them to join. Is there a way to take some part of the printer's housing off in order to allow more room to work?

Thanks.

The info from this link might help. http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/cx52003.html
Once you reconnect the tube you may want to use a clamp or I use a lillte silicone sealant to secure the tube so it won't disconnect again.

I hope this helps,

Wes.

Funny...I would have figured the scanner would be the first to go. Is it too much to ask for a printer to print???? Oh, 10 months in, mine went blank. Got it replaced under warranty...8 months later, all I get is streaky blue. Won't be doing Epson again...

This is a message for Denny regarding my original post about my printer not printing. One of his recommendations was to reinstall the drivers. Well I did that and it did not correct the printing problem, however, I am happy to report that the scanner (which worked intermittently from day one) is now up and running. Weird huh?

Hi All,
I read posts at this site about 6 months ago when my printer died. I was still able to use the scanner, until last week. It appears that while I wasn't printing, my printer was still using ink and now that the ink is gone the scanner won't work. Go figure! Does anyone know how to work around this problem? I really don't want to purchase ink for a printer that won't work, just to be able to use the scanner. Is there a way to fool the machine into thinking there is ink so I can scan...or is this thing destined to be in the garbage can next Monday??
Thanks in Advance,
Rhoda

Rhoda: Once the Ink Error Light comes on solid, it shuts down the printers operation, until they are replaced. Epson Printers require good ink cartridges to be installed, before they are capable of being used. The only thing you can do, other than actually replacing those ink cartridges, is to invest in a INK CHIP RESETTER. You could then reset the Electrical Chip on those ink cartridges, so that ink error light would turn off. HERE'S SOME PREVIOUSLY POSTED INFORMATION OFF THE "FIXYOUROWNPRINTER.COM", PRINTER REPAIR SITE: bjrose 3/31/2003 16:08:40 Subject: reset most ink cartridges...check out this software works like a charm. use usb port if you have com problem.

Rhoda: Unfortunatly, inexpensive ink jet printers are basically thought of as disposable in the Printer Industry, especially anything under $100.00. Its even starting to look like anything under $150.00, may also be more or less disposable anymore. Even just four or five years ago, the quality of most of the major manufactors printers were much better and they lasted much longer. Of course that inexpensive ink jet printer was more like $150 to $250, so we were paying for the quality. Unfortunatly, as printer prices started to come down, it seems like the quality of those small ink jet printers also started to come down. Almost daily I talk to customers with printers, that are over 4 or 5 years old. Those older printers were built better and lasted longer. Most of the time, they are usually just in need of general servicing and cleaning and rarely require any actual parts replaced. I tell some of them that they are better off having it serviced and cleaned for $60 to $120, then going out and buying a $60 to $120 on a new basically disposable ink jet printer. There are a lot of older ink jet printers out there, that are little work horses and seem to almost last forever. Even better results on some of the older Laserjet Printers. When BRAND A makes a cheap inexpensive printer and sells a thousand of them, then BRAND B, C and other manufactors jump on the chance to keep up with BRAND A and their share of those next thousands of printer sales. They all quickly turn out cheap inexpensive printers so they to can hopefully sell a few thousand of them as well. As consumers we buy them up quickly, because they are so cheap. Of course we expect quality for our $50.00 to $100.00, but unless we want to pay for that quality, we are not going to get it...Just to let you know: Most manufactors of ink jet printers, require two good ink cartridges to be installed, before the printer will actually work. Even if you never use the color ink cartridge and only print in black, you will usually need both cartridges installed. Also, the actual stamped age date on those ink cartridges cannot be expired, or they will usually cause the printer to shut down on most of the newer printers sold...Denny Conway

Thanks Denny,
Unfortunatly, my printer was about $200 and only lasted a little over a year. The scanner was still working fine, until the dumb thing finished using up the ink (I'm assuming it did this during the cleaning process when it was turned on). I haven't acutally printed anything with it for over 6 months because it wasn't printing at all!! I tried the cleaning and checked the tube and all that fun stuff. I appreciate your time and suggestions. I'm sure I will be shopping soon!

I Just bought a new Cannon Multipass after owning my Epson for less than two years. (The Multipass 390 has great reviews for those of you who are ready to give up on this one and goes for around 230,check Pc Magazine.com.) Anyhow I have had the Epson CX5200 replaced 3 times under my one year warranty because it just decided to stop printing in one color or another (in one instance every color) after I replaced the cartridges once and they reached their 50% ink remaining point. Not only have I wasted my money on this printer but the cartridges as well, which are deemed useless onec it decides to stop working again. Epson asks for the new cartridges you just purchased to be returned to them in the machine or they refuse to replace the printer. After reading everyone else's problems with this printer, I think it is safe to say that we should all mutually agree on the fact that this printer is the biggest piece of junk in the world and probably doesn't even deserve the money, time, and effort in fixing it.

Hi,

Read your mrssage about the cx 5200. I have now had my printer for about 18 months and it has just started going wrong, it prints as if there is berely any ink left. Have replaced all the cartridges, cleaned/realigned heads etc. but to no effect. Is this similar to your original problem? How did you fix it?

I have taken mine into a shop who can't work out what is wrong and have suggested replacing the heads which will cost about the same as the whole printer!

Would love to know if there is a fix.

Thanks

darrell: Be sure and check out the "Dura Brite Blank Output Information Page", for the "CX82", "CX5200" & "CX64/C84" models, at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html , as it is the most common problem on the "CX5200" model. I know this information does not really give you that much to go on, but I felt you should know about this common problem, just in case it happens to apply in your case...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Thank-you thank-you thank-you. I fixed it myself. Your reference to http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html is right on target. Of course it was more difficult than the site made it sound but it works now. I put the tube back on and moved the little clip form the other end of the hose and put it where it pops off instead. Saved some money for sure.

Thanks Denny, You know, I could get no help on this from epson. It's like this problem is not known to them(of course it must be). Isn't it funny that the help for this has to come from the ink manufactuer? a simlple little clamp would have prevented a lot of headaches and wasted time and energy. Now if I can only get it to print in proper color :P There's too much magenta and a bit of striping. I haven't figured out how to adjust that yet.
I still love my Lexmark 7200 for print quality
but it's a parellel port, and the colored ink is all in the same cartridge:p But I regress.

Re: Epson CX5200 by Denny Conway (2/15/05 10:16 AM) reply + / -
Lew: You're welcome...You might want to actually run a Nozzle Test Page, from your computer system and see how that test pattern actually looks. If there are white lines/void lines thru the pattern, or some nozzles seem to not be working, then you may want to run several sets of Printhead Cleaning Cycles & Nozzle Tests [one after the other], to see if that corrects the problems. If after 5 or 6 sets of tests, the problem is still there, then you may have a failing ink cartridge, or a possibly clogged printhead assembly, but no way for me to really know. There is a REVIEW of the "Printhead Cleaning Solution", as well as general "Printhead Cleaning Instructions", that is available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/EKR.html ...Sometimes striping and lines can be caused by a build-up of dust, dirt, lint and hair that sticks to the wet ink on the bottom side and backside areas of the Printhead Assembly. Once those two areas are thoughly cleaned, the problem will normally go away, unless its actually being caused by a hardware/parts problem [such as a failing ink cartridge, or Printhead Assembly or Main Board Assembly], or possibly even by a particular software program that you may be printing from [possible incorrect or corrupted settings in that software program]. Check for a couple of e-mails from me that should help in that area, just in case you want to do the cleaning and at least eliminate that possibility...Again, Good Luck! Denny Conway

My CX5200 is about 18 months old.
Perfect at the start.
Recently it's printing everything with a massive Magenta cast, even black and white text !!. I've tried every possible printer setting with no effect.
Colour copying looks better but still somewhat magenta with an apparent lack of black as well as the colour cast,so I reckon it's possibly not the cartridges or heads.
I've reloaded the drivers - No luck.
I'm on XP.
Any thoughts?
Thanks - anyone.

Richard: The only thing I can suggest, is to try cleaning the underside & backside areas of the printhead assembly and see if that actually helps. Its possible that your problem is being caused by a build-up of dust, dirt, lint and hair, that sticks to the wet ink on the bottom side and backside areas of the Printhead Assembly. After absorbing a multitude of posts on this board, I can say its safe to assume that my CX5200 is not the only one taking this plight. Since DAY ONE my scanner cold cathode tube (the light) will either come on during initial power up, or selectively remain off. No biggie - after 1 or two resets it is usually workable. But then - just like many on this board, my printer began to degrade in quality at an alarming rate. Now I don't use my printer very much at all - but certainly enough not to warrant any clogged arteries from the ink drying up in some electro-static capillary. Needless to say - I went to Staples and paid a hefty price for replacement OEM refill cartridges. THE NEXT DAY when I went to print something - it said I was LOW ON INK!! The somnabeech sucked all of the ink from the NEW cartridges and left me with like 10% of ink. I was so p.o.'d at the whole thing. Today, after reading many helpful comments by Denny and the rest, I also learned that this "purging tube" also became disconnected. Good thing was I was able to fasten the two tubes together and glue them so they won't come apart as suggested - bad thing was during attachment of the tube I hit the black rubberized head resting station with my screwdriver and popped it off which broke off two little tabs that hold it in place. *sigh*. I am very upset and disappointed. This would be a wonderful machine had they just engineered it better. But as Denny suggests - these are simply disposable items in todays age. But I don't feel good about throwing $200 away. I think Epson should be replacing these models with a later (Can you say IMPROVED) model. Like many others, this is my third and LAST EPSON I will ever buy. I hope someone from their corporate office uses a translator and stumbles upon this site. Maybe then they will come to understand how many customers/end users they have insulted. As for the guy that mentioned the "class action lawsuit" - I'm all for it! I don't know how many people it takes but if everyone participated, it might be worth it and show Epson (As well as others in the MFG industry) that you better stand by your products. If America would just start manaufacturing their own stuff HERE - we might get better products AND satisfaction and create more work for AMERICA. I have nothing against ANY other nationality - but I am willing to bet the people who pocket most of YOUR hard earned money don't even speak English, therefore will never see those of us that will remember Epson's name in a different way...

'Nuff Said.

Thanks to all who contribute to helping others here.

No black and magenta would print out, and cyan and yellow was spotty, even after changing Epson brand carts, and multiple head cleanings. I called the US Epson Service line: (562)276-4382 Hours: Mon.- Fri. 6AM-6PM (PT). Since it was out of warranty, I had to pay $9.95 on my charge card to get to talk with a human, who had me clean 2 more times, pull out each cart, cover the spout with a piece of paper and shake it for 10 seconds, and put them back in, and then head clean once more. None of this changed the nozzle check, so he then gave me a Reference number, and transferred me to the Customer Satisfaction group. She offered me 3 choices:
1) a $40 off coupon code for any purchase on their website.
2) a discount price on 3 different printers:
- CX4600 for $90 - $30 rebate = $60
- CX6600 for $160 - $50 rebate = $110
- RX500 for $190 - $50 rebate = $140
3) Free repair and shipping of my printer (they send you a UPS label by mail, you pack and call UPS, they repair in 7 - 10 days, and send it back).
Since I could find the RX500 at Sam's Club for $149 without a mail in rebate, I figured that wasn't much of a deal. I opted for the free repair. [OR] Re: cx5200 not printing by SeaHawk (2/16/05 6:28 PM): Ok good news! I had a cx5200 and recomended it to numerous customers of mine. Recently mine and a customers quit printing as you described. Anonymous: I would recommend that you get out your origional sales receipt or sales invoice and check your origional purchase date. If your printer is actually new and still under its origional Factory Warranty, then there's no charge to talk to the "Epson Technical Support Department". That way you are talking directly with a technician, that is actually trained by Epson Company on your particular printer. To see available phone numbers for technical support and replacement parts ordering, go on-line to Epson @ " http://www.epson.com ", or call the Epson Automated Support Locator @ 1-800-442-2110 [press 1, then 1 & following prompts]. If your printer is out of warranty, you will need a credit card, before the technicians can help you, because there is a charge for technical support over the phone...If they are unable to actually help you over the phone and your printer is under warranty, then you can call the "Epson Connection", at 1-562-276-1300 and file a Warranty Claim. Epson normally offers a WHOLE UNIT EXCHANGE on most ink jet style printers that fail under warranty, but you may need to provide "Proof Of Purchase" [origional sales receipt or invoice] to complete that warranty claim. You also need to know that a Whole Unit Exchange is where Epson will send you a replacement printer, in exchange for your defective warranty printer. That replacement printer is usually not an actual new printer. It may be another printer that also failed under warranty and was also returned to Epson Company. Returned warranty printers, then go thru the Epson Repair Facility, where they are repaired. Then they may be used as a replacement printer, for any other printers of the same model that may also fail under warranty...As to your possible problem: Several different people have reported, that its common for the ink inside that tube to dry out and cause a clog, when that tube was off and exposed to the air. They report that when the clog was cleaned out and removed, the printing then returned. Some people have reported using a pipe cleaner to clean out the tube and then flush it with hot water or printhead cleaning solution...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Epson Company does not even allow their dealers to work on those models under warranty. They simply send a Replacement Printer in exchange for the defective unit thats under warranty and the defective printer is then sent back to Epson...The only thing I can suggest, is that you try and locate an actual service manual for your printer, to use as reference in troubleshooting, disassembly and servicing, of your printers service error condition. I would recommend that you go to the "Compass Micro Inc" web-site, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm and check with them directly, to see if they have a service manual available yet for your "CX5200" printer. This printer is a dog and Epson needs to do something about it. I purchased my CX5400 about 9 months ago. I was changing the Ink cartridge for the second time and it appeared the head might clooged. I went through the nozzle check, cleaning, alignment etc..,. Still very light to no printing. My Neighbor had the same problem after about the same time period. Epson tech support must know about this piece of junk. My advice don't buy another EPSON until the company owns up to their poor design. Don't but another EPSON because that is the only thing these people understand. Until then you can forget about getting any satisfaction. This not about whether you bought a warranty or not. This is about a piece of crap the does not work like you were led to believe. Pony up EPSON. I will never look at another one of your products. Have a good day.

CX5200: Avoiding the Sharks and Cleaning the Jets by Chris123 (5/19/05 3:17 PM) reply + / -
Greetings,
To all those who got the West Side Story reference, kudos. Now, before you go and give up the Epson ghost, I have a solution that worked for me, when all seemed hopeless. After getting Epson to agree to a $35 upgrade (they pay shipping), I figured that I had nothing to lose by experimentation on the CX5200 and subsequently stumbled upon the following solution:
1. Extract cartridges
2. Inject Windex (w/ammonia) into the tubes that connect the cartridges to the print head (with some sort of syringe).
3. Blow air through the same tubes using a POWERED tire inflator. Compressed air from a can will not have sufficient pressure. A 5 second blast on each tube should suffice
4. Inject a second dose of Windex into the tubes.
5. Reinsert the cartridges and print big, bold blocks or letters using all the affected cartridges until the ink is obviously flowing.
6. Go through cleaning cycle.
7. Drop some Windex onto the foam pad that the heads rest on.

Chris123: Congratulations on being able to correct your printers problems. I'm glad your methods worked so well for you, but you may have just been very lucky to have gotten those clogged print heads to open up, without any apparent damage. Especially because windex and or compressed air can actually cause possible damage to the nozzles inside the print heads, if you are not really careful. Most epson techs only recommend using the actual "Epson Print Head Cleaning Solution", or "Distilled Water" on those print heads, because they are so easy to damage. Especially while using most other cleaning solutions and cleaning type fluids...JUST SO OTHERS WILL KNOW & CAN DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES: The nozzles inside the print head assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force on the plunger of syringe, thats used with the actual epson cleaning solution. Especially if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. To much force/pressure [even compressed air] can damage the little tubes inside the nozzle assembly and then it will never work again. One individual print head nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog...Denny Conway

Denny, did you ever think he might be a printer tech posing as an uninformed consumer. Probably has nothing to work on so he's trying to drum up some business by giving people advice that's going to destroy their printheads, which compressed air will definitely do. Windex is like smoking, it won't kill the printer immediately, but it will in the long term.

Re: Epson CX5200 by Wes (5/19/05 7:13 PM) reply + / -
I have yet to see a CX5200 with a foam pad on the cap assembly. It has a padless cap assembly. I think Moe's right about someone trying to drum up some repair business.

And Windex and compressed air are two of the worst things you can do to a print head.

Re: Epson CX5200 by chris123 (5/21/05 10:45 AM) reply + / -
Gee guys, you've either been watching way too many Oliver Stone movies or been off your meds for awhile. Lighten up; I'm just a guy who fixed his 'ready to trash CX5200.' I shall forevermore leave the dispensing of advice to the more erudite among you.

Seriously, I guess I just lucked out with the air and Windex. I utilized those procedures based upon other user feedback in another forum. I promise I'll never, ever do it again...and thanks for the input.

Question: What is the Epson Print Head Cleaning Solution made of? Others have proffered isopropyl alcohol as a possible cleaning solution (pardon the pun). Is this pernicious advice, as well?

Re: Epson CX5200 by Wes (5/21/05 12:27 PM) reply + / -
There are two cleaning solutions sold here. One is surfynol and the othere is a rinsing ink. Alcohol is not a component of any of them. Alcohol as you might know is used as a drying agent for some inks so if you use a drying agent while trying to clear a clog you can actually cause the clog to get even more clogged than it was.

The print head is very fragile so using too much pressure from air or cleaning solution will damage them. Windex damages the plastics of the print head so that's the reason why you do use Windex, Alcohol or compressed air on the print heads. It may work once but there are better or ways to do it that won't cause damage.

We see lots of really bad advice given here and no one here want's to mock or make fun of you but by letting you and others who read this know why using Windex, Alcohol and other things is bad then we do the forum and it's readers a dis service.

Just because you read someihing of another forum or a web site does not make it true. It someone said I cured my hickups by sticking my head in a bucket of water for 5 minutes and they went away would you do it? Of corse not. That would be plain crazy.

But that's what we think when we see people doing things to their printer that will damage them. We are here (all voluntary I might add) to help you fix your printer yourself the right way. Or at least tell you why you may be better off replacing a printer due to the high cost of replacement parts.

So all who help out here that work in the printer repair field want to give you the best advice that we can give. Most printer techs here are real experts in their field. Denny Conway does Epson and HP and maybe Canon. I specialize in Epson printers but do answer Canon questions when I can.

I hope this helps and have a good weekend,

Wes.

I just signed up for the forum and have found if full of great information. I encountered exactly the same cx5200 blank page problem immediately after a change of all cartridges that so many others have reported. I disassembled the unit and checked the tube connection and found it OK. I used a syringe and cleaning fluid in the printhead with no effect. I then soaked a paper towel with cleaning fluid and put it under the printhead overnight. I also completely soaked the printhead rest position sponge with cleaning fluid. After that last step, I got an error message and the dialog box on my computer said "open printer and remove any foreign objects, then turn off printer for a short time" I didn't find any foreign objects and now my printer won't power up at all. If I hold the power button down, the four red ink cartridge lights under the cover all stay illuminated while I hold the power button down, but the unit will not power up. Could I have soaked a circuit board with all my excess cleaning fluid? Any suggestions?
Thanks

Need I even say what's wrong with this future door-stop? It looks like it may end up in the snake room along with my 4-year-old Sony DVD player, a 1-year-old Emerson DVD player, a 5-year-old Sharp VHS, a 6-month-old Allegro combo DVD/VHS player, (I'm waiting for my 2-month-old Toshiba combo DVD/VHS to quit on me),7 CD players of various lineage (3 less than a year old---Aiwa's are the best & last the longest), a fairly new Pioneer tape deck, 4 mice (all under 2 years old), 2 keyboards (all less than a year old), a 3-year-old monitor and an Epson Stylus Photo 750 (really, it only needs an expensive new ink cartridge....it uses only 1 cartridge for all the colors & black, & if 1 color goes out I have to buy a new one, which costs more than some of the new printers out there, if I can even find one any more). I looked at that tube, and it is connected. But when I moved the ink cartridge assembly back to the right I noticed a pool of ink in the bottom of the well about 4" from the left. About a year ago I was all set to go buy a new ink cartridge for my 750 when my son came over with the 5200 and told me to get rid of all my other printers (I had the 750 & an HP Deskjet, which only printed in black. We'd had the Deskjet since 1995 and it STILL worked just fine). He'd bought himself a CX5400 because of the scanner problem. The scanner on this thing works intermittently. I just can't get it to print Up until yesterday it printed in yellow, but now it won't even do that. The inks are nearly full, as I replaced the yellow & magenta not long ago, and the black & cyan are over 50% full. If I have to replace this thing I'm really going to be ticked, because I just bought a full box of colors when I needed the cyan (the only color they were out of). GRRRR!!

hi i would just like to say that my brother has the epson cx5200 and he has the same problem he brought it around for me to look at and what i did was-
remove cartridges and pull of the little sticker over the nozzle completely(the bit that gets pierced when you put them in) then there is a rubber piece inside the nozzle, remove this wash and dry it and then replace it. my brother has had no problems since(2 months ago)
hope this helps

Re: Epson CX5200 by Stuart (9/17/05 9:36 AM) reply + / -
Up to now, my Epson CX5200 has printed perfectly. As my three color cartridges ran out of ink, I replaced them as I have in the past (per normal procedures using only Epson cartridges), but with my last replacement of cartridges, documents are not appearing in color. I have followed all maintenance suggestions, but still no luck. I even tried a generic ink cartridge, but had no success.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

Stuart

I have read the messages posted here and I have had the same problem. The small ink tube had become disconnected. Thanks to the instructions here I was able to reconnect it sucessfully. Still I was printing blank pages. I ordered the head cleaner kit mentioned on this board and carefully cleaned the print heads. Still more blank pages. I reloaded the printer drivers and still got nothing. I had one more idea. I disassembled the printer and carefully examined the ink tube one more time. I found the that tube was clogged with dried ink and was being pinched by the holders. After cleaning the tube and making sure it wasn't being pinched in any way, I reassembled the printer. After a couple of head cleaning runs I started getting nice prints. The dried ink can be squeezed out or you can try injecting some of the print head cleaner solution into the tube to dissolve the clogs. I suspect that this is the reason that the tube comes loose in the first place. I figure that pressure builds up in the clogged tube and pops off.

Thanks for all the good information. I hope this helps those that have about given up.

Everyone! Save yourself some time & money....junk your printer now & get a Dell. They back up their products, not like Epson where you need to call a none 800 # and pay for the service and get nothing out of it in the end.

How do I get the print cartridges into correct position for changing when the low ink indicator is NOT on? I'm using the Epson CX5200. Can't find my manual or info online.

Thanks,

I have been reading the posts and I am amazed with all the problems. I have had my cx5200 for about 2yrs with no problems until now. I needed a black and cyan cartridge. I replaced them and the black prints fine but the cyan does not print at all and the other colors don't print their proper colors. I have done the head cleaning about 5 times and the nozzle check. Nozzle check has no cyan at all. Any suggestions?

(Awesome Fix): Epson CX5200 - Blank Page Fix by TAW (12/11/05 1:07 PM) reply + / -
Denny: Way to go. The fix is a bit tedious and requires 4 arms and small hands, but the loose purge tube was the problem. Everything works fine now. I am curious to see how long the tube stays connected. Initially, it was 1 1/2 years. Since it has come off once, I supect it may be more prone to releasing. Many thanks. Ash

Re: (Awesome Fix): Epson CX5200 - Blank Page Fix by moe (12/11/05 4:07 PM) reply + / -
It will come off pretty quick. That's because the other end of it has a blockage of hardened toner. You really need to clean out the discharge end of the tube and flush it to keep it from happening again. It discharges into a large sponge pad at the bottom of the printer.

Re: Epson CX5200 by Streetmedik (12/14/06 6:10 PM) reply + / -
I see that alot! if you are good at taking things apart and not destroying them, then the problem can usually be fixed easily.

Remove the ink carts.
on either side of the carrage there is a screw, remove both of them.

CAREFULLY slide out the silver bar those screws are holding. Be sure to note its orentation for putting the thing back in later.

also carefully remove the silver "fingers".

remove the black clip/cover on the right side of the carrage that covers the ribbon cables.

lift the head (you see 4 nipples in there-- that is the top of the head assembly)

gently pull out the ribbon cables.

on the bottom of the head is 2 screws, remove them

now the head will come into 4 parts. Nipples, Gasket, nozzle block, and a metal guard.

get some windex with amonia.

soak the parts for a day or 2.

blot dry, then let it set for atleast 2 days to be sure it is COMPLETELY dry.

reassemble, charge the ink, do the printers head cleaning, and boom. back in business.

this works 90% of the time.

Denny-- Here's one I haven't seen. I just purchased a refurbished CX5200 cheap (to use up ink ccartridges from my old one that broke) and when I start it up I get a red error light and an error message saying "Scanner error-see your documentation and call service if necessary". I really don't care about the scanner--I just need the printer to run--but I can't get the printer to go past the error message, even pushing the reset button, or any other button. Is there a way to bypass the error message so I can start using the printer? Thanks.

Re: Epson CX5200 by WaveGuide (12/17/06 2:34 PM) reply + / -
Hi Streetmedik,
I read your post with interest, particularly regarding 'Windex'. I'm in the UK so have only heard of this stuff via these forums. You say it contains ammonia. Do you think this is the important ingredient?
I've researched the problem of dissolving hardened durabrite blockages and conclude that a solvent for the resin component is required. In Epson cleaner, this may be a glycol of some kind. Your observations about ammonia could be a further clue. Ammonia is alkaline. I've dismantled print heads down to the jet block, but solidly blocked holes do not respond to Epson's gloop even after a week's submersion.

Cheers, WaveGuide

Hey sdunegan,
I had the same prob. I just took the "Grey Flip Top" off and the error went away. I don't know why but it's working now.
