Epson 1270 & 1280

Epson 1270 & 1280 by Mark Bausch (12/9/04 11:25 AM) reply + / -
Hi folks. The fixyourownprinter.com website is wonderful...and what you folks sell works, too...I rehabilitated a HP 6MP laser printer a couple of years ago with the aid of your parts and expertise. Now...perhaps...I can help you and some of your readers. My four year old 1270...moderately used...now prints thin red lines every so often...I searched the site and a suggestion [http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/printer/new/23918.html] was made to make a change at the print processor level (check the link for details). I tried that, and what happens is that the red lines are removed...but in their place is a blob of red ink on the very left and right edge of the page. Well, here is what I've learned. In my hands, with both Macs and Windows OS's in place, the extraneous red ink problem seems to go away if I print using the "heavyweight matte paper" paper option instead of the "premium photo glossy" option. Perhaps this is only a stopgap...Denny Conway seems to have nailed the problem, overall, as a printhead problem...but as I said, stepping back to "heavyweight matte paper"...even when printing on Premium Photo Glossy paper...seems to solve the problem. I'll report back with further analysis but after 150 pages or so it seems to hold up. Finally...I can't really tell the difference in the print quality, on Premium Photo Glossy...if I print using the Heavyweight Matte Paper option. Any comments?

Mark: You may want to even try cleaning the underside area of the actual Printhead Assembly. Sometimes a build-up of dust, dirt, lint and hair, sticks to the wet ink on the bottom side of the Printhead Assembly. That build-up can cause the nozzles to actually fire crooked, or cause lines to be printed on the paper. It may not be causing your actual problem, but just in case you want to do the cleaning and at least eliminate that possibility, I will e-mail that cleaning info to you...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: Re: Epson 1270 & 1280 by tom (1/6/05 3:48 PM) reply + / -
it sounds like i have a similar problem, but how do you clean the bottom side of the Printhead Assembly?

Do you suggest taking it apart to get underneath or is there something i'm missing here?

Thank you.

Re: Epson 1270 & 1280 by Denny Conway (1/6/05 4:10 PM) reply + / -
Tom: I don't recommend removing the Printhead Assembly for cleaning, because they are easy to damage and its also possible to throw off the Factory Settings. The underside & backside areas can be cleaned while the printhead assembly is installed in its normal position. I will e-mail you my in-depth cleaning instructions, just like I told MARK, I would...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Printhead Assembly Cleaning by Nikola (1/26/05 1:55 PM) reply + / -
I need reliable instruction how to clean printhead assembly in insatlled position. I have Epson 2000P (which is basically same construction as Epson 1280) and want to try to clean printhead assembly. If my printhead is not due to replacement a build-up of dirt might be causing the problem I have - couple of nozzles seems to be "firing crooked". I would appreciate any help greatly. Thanks. Nikola

Re: Epson 1270 & 1280 by Denny Conway (1/26/05 2:24 PM) reply + / -
Nikola: It is possible that your problem could be caused by a build-up of dust, dirt, lint and hair that sticks to the wet ink on the bottom side and backside areas of the Printhead Assembly. That build-up can cause nozzles to fire crooked, or it can act like a small paint brush and can transfer wet ink to the paper as the Printhead Assembly is moving back-n-forth during the printing process. Sometimes that build-up simply smears the wet ink already on the paper, from the printing process. Once those two areas are thoughly cleaned, the problem will normally go away, unless its actually being caused by a Hardware/Parts Problem [such as a failing Printhead Assembly or Main Board Assembly]. Check for a couple of e-mails from me that should help in that area, in case you want to do the cleaning and at least eliminate that possibility...If that cleaning does not help your crooked firing nozzle problem, then its also possible that you may actually have to try and dissolve any bad exterior clogs, that can cause those nozzles to fire crooked. You will need to soak that outside area of the printhead in the Epson Cleaning Solution, while it is puddled up on the felt Cap Assembly. Cartridges. You might want to try using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution, available through fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson . With the "Print Cartridge Holder Assembly" unlocked and over towards the center of the printer, remove the Power Cord from the wall. That assembly can now be easily slid back-n-forth and you want to move it over to the far left side, so its out of the way. I would suggest that you actually apply that "Epson Cleaning Solution" on top of that felt pad [Cap Assembly] until it actually fills up to the top of the rubber ring, that sets around that pad. You want the solution to be so high that its almost at the point that one more drop will cause it to over flow. Then maually slide that print cartridge holder assembly to its normal Home Position, at the far right side of the printer. That assembly will will lift up and seal itself to the bottom of the Printhead Assembly. The nozzles on the bottom side of that printhead assembly, will then be setting in that cleaning solution. Leave that assembly parked over that felt pad for 48 hours, to allow those nozzles to soak in the cleaning solution. Sometimes dried ink on the face of those nozzles will actually cause them to fire crooked. Soaking in that cleaning solution can usually dissolve any possible build-up that may be causing the nozzles to fire crooked. Injecting that cleaning solution into the printhead assembly, will clean out the insides of the nozzles, but not the outside area of the nozzles. That soaking is called PUDDLING of the Cap Assembly and will usually correct the crooked firing nozzle problem. I cannot be sure it will actually help in your case, but you have eliminated everything else. TECH NOTE: If you only have a limited amount of that cleaning solution [such as a syringe full], then I suggest that you first slowly add drops of water to the top of that felt pad. You want to be sure the water is not simply absorbed into the pad and down into the small tubing under that assembly, instead of filling up on top of the pad. If it is then the same thing would happen to the cleaning solution. Sometimes several teaspoons of water must be slowly applied, until it actually stops being absorbed. Usually what happens is that the tubing fills up completely and then the water stops being absorbed into the pad. When the water starts to build-up on top of the pad, then apply the actual cleaning solution and fill up that pad to the almost over flowing condition. Then simply park that cartridge holder assembly over that felt pad for the soaking. Once the nozzles have soaked for 48 hours or more, then I suggest that you use the wet coffee strips to clean off the underside area of the printhead assembly again. That may remove any other build-up that loosened up during that soaking procedure...I hope this actually helps, but if it does not, then I can only guess that you actually have a Hardware/Parts problem...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: Epson 1270 & 1280 by Denny Conway (1/26/05 2:32 PM) reply+1 + / -
Nikola: that previous info will help to clean out the underside & backside areas of the Printhead Assembly and to try and dissolve any exterior clogs that maybe causing those nozzles to fire crooked. If those methods do not help, then you might want to actually try slowly & carefully injecting that Epson Cleaning Solution directly into the printhead assemblies. You can then see if that solution might possibly dissolve any minor clogs from the inside of that printhead assembly, instead of from the outside of it. That Epson Cleaning Solution, sells for around $10.00 plus shipping. It includes a syringe and some Epson printhead cleaning solution, which is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson inks. This is the same chemical used by Epson in their service department. You can try it if you want to and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to fully open up again, but that will only help if they are actually clogged. It was basically designed by Epson Company for use on their older models of ink jet printers, but people have been using it on the newer models, with success reported. IF YOU DECIDE TO, TRY THE "EPSON STYLUS HEAD CLEANING SOLUTION", JUST REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force on the plunger of the syringe. Damage can even occur when you are using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. To much force/pressure can damage the little tubes inside the Nozzle Assembly and then it will never work again. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to dissolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never dissolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. Again, if the cleaning fluids don't help, then its generally time to invest in a new printer. In some more expensive printers, you may want to get an estimate to replace the printhead assembly, but as a general rule, its not really economical to do in the smaller Epson Ink Jet style printers. You can generally buy a new small printer cheaper than you can have your old one repaired for. EXAMPLE: The printhead assembly in the "C80" Printer sells for around $120 to $130. There is a REVIEW of the "Printhead Cleaning Solution", as well as general "Printhead Cleaning Instructions", that is available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/EKR.html ...Again, Good Luck! having problems with ink splattering and I think the cause could be a build up of dust and hair as it appears the nozzles are fine when I request a nozzle check. I noted Denny Conway has a detailed way of cleaning the head - may I have those instructions please?

Re: Epson 1270 & 1280 by Denny Conway (5/5/05 1:31 PM) reply + / -
Cealy: I have no way to know if that in-depth cleaning will actually help to correct your printers problem. However, its about the only thing you can try, other than actually installing new print heads, which is really not economical to do in the smaller ink jet printer models. Although its a lot of information to read and to follow, its not actually that hard to perform the needed servicing and cleaning. That info is posted step by step, so its easier to follow each step in the actual cleaning procedure. I ended up posting my in-depth information, for cleaning the underside & backside areas of the Print Head Assembly, on 4/7/05. You can see that in-depth info at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/28244 [simply click on that link and it will usually open for you], on the fixyourownprinter.com , Printer Repair Site. There are two separate posted replies, listing GENERAL INFO #1 and GENERAL INFO #2. You may want to perform that in-depth cleaning, to at least eliminate those very common problem areas...I hope that cleaning info helps...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: Re: Epson 1270 & 1280 by Anonymous (5/5/05 3:20 PM) reply + / -
one question - you dont mention whether or not to leave the cartridges installed while doing this cleaning. Should we remove them?

Re: Epson 1270 & 1280 by Denny Conway (5/5/05 4:28 PM) reply + / -
Cealy/Anonymous: Because you are cleaning the underside and backside areas of the actual print head assembly, there's no need or reason to remove those ink cartridges. So its best to leave them installed. If you were to remove the ink cartridges out of the printer and leave them out for more than a few minutes, the air could cause the ink inside the tiny nozzles to start drying out. That in turn could actually cause clogging and even possible damage. The only reasons to actually remove those ink cartridges, would be if you are going to install new cartridges, or if you were going to use a syringe with the "Epson Print Head Cleaning Solution", to try and dissolve internal clogs...Again, Good Luck! Denny Conway

It worked - that was the problem. I just had to run the print head over the strips a few times and voila - all that cat fur came off.....

I used the coffee filters as you suggested and it worked great.

thanks so much!

Denny, I have an epson stylus 1280 printer, It works great except for only one color, the lite cyan. I have tried the head cleaning over and over and still doesn't help I have been reading your printhead cleaning instructions and you mention moving the cartridges over to the middle by hand and my book instructions say never to move it by hand so have been reluctant to do that. Of course not sure if you think this is my problem since it is only one color that is not working. Do you feel that that is the solution to fixing the problem, and let me know that moving the cartridges to the middle by hand is ok. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me to help with this problem

Re: Epson 1270 & 1280 by printerrepairpros (1/11/06 12:00 AM) reply + / -
Lil Mauck,
It is perfectly ok to move the carriage by hand. Make sure that it is unlocked before doing so. To do so, turn the printer on and pull the plug when the carriage starts to move. With regard to the printing issue, if only one color is not working properly, try flushing the printhead with the appropriate fluid. It can be purchased from this site.
Hope this helps.

Change the settings from normal to photo. Lots of people use the printer to print photos on the text setting which will cause banding. Read here for more info http://www.epson.com

If it is printing outside of the margins then that indicates that the print head is failing. You can try cleaning the print heads but if you see no improvement then you will know it is the print head.

Here are the basic print head cleaning instructions http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/printhead.html

You can buy a print head cleaning kit from here http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson/K70

Foreign object message with red and green lights blinking. Found no foreign object. Red light began blinking after printing 8 of 10 transfer sheets using Photoshop, but continued to print 2 11x14s. Started to print 8x10 when green and red light began blinking. One recommendation was to clean waste ink sponge but found no sponge where printer head rests. Had a similar problem with another 1280 but trashed it after I could not find a solution from Epson or internet sites. Are Epson chips programmed to work for so long and then quit, forcing customers to buy another printer? I am using a CFS. Now, when starting printer, green light is flashing with no red light flashing and printer carrier goes to far left and returns to right side to begin charging cycle. On third cycle, red light comes on and paper does not feed. Given a slight push, paper engages but second rollers do not catch. Given another push, paper goes through printer without stopping.

I have a 1270 which I use infrequently - once a month or so. Each time I use it, I have to run the head cleaning utility several times - usually at least five, and sometimes as many as 10 - before it will print correctly. Does anyone have advice on how to avoid or fix this problem?

I have a 3 year old 1280 that seems like it's reached the end. I have cleaned and cleaned and still rarely get good prints.

I think my old continuous flow ink system may have ruined the heads or something.

So should I buy a new 1280? Is there any difference? Or should I get my old one fixed?

Thx,

David

I would LOVE those instructions. I'm convinced I have fuzz/dust (cat hair) causing my red lines. Cleaning and continuous printing sometimes displaces the stuff and I get clean prints but by the next day or week after no use it's back.

I would be ever so grateful for that info.

I have had numerous problems with my 1280 even before trying a cis.
Not printing on certain types of paper, printing unevenly, lines, the color printed not matching the color of the item being printed etc.

Now, I am having bigger problems with my 1280 after using a spongeless continuous ink system. I have 2 flashing lights on the front and error messages when I try to print. The cartridge will not even move.

I am very disappointed with the performance of this expensive machine before and after the continuous ink system.

I tried the SSC service utility, but it didn't work - that was more money spent

I don't have money to pay someone to repair this mechanical pile of plastic and metal or to replace this very expensive large format printer.

My next step it to try to find a decent service manual.

It is my belief that a company with Epson's reputation should make a better quality product.

It seems that the 1280 was put on the market before is was fully tested for real quality and durability.

Has there ever been a recall on printers? Maybe this one should be the first.

Re: Epson 1270 & 1280 by printerrepairpros (10/13/07 10:35 AM) reply + / -
Tangosierra,
I beg to differ with your observation. The 1280 is a successor to many enhancements from the original design going back to the 1200 etc. It is a fine printer when used and maintained properly. We have serviced hundreds in this "family" and have numerous customers using multiple units on a daily basis without any problems. Most of the problems we see are due to poor ink or ink systems attached to the printer and failure to perform routine maintenance.

Thanks for all the good info folks.

I use my 1280 printer maybe once or twice per month. I do tend to have plugged nozzles often. So what is considered "routine maintenance"?

And a second question: I've noticed that sometimes, when the nozzle check indicates I need to clean the heads, that removing and reinstalling the cartridge seems to be the only way to get the nozzle working again. This made me wonder if the problem isn't really a plugged nozzle, but dirty contacts on the cartridge. I tried 'scratching-up' (slightly & gently) the cartridge contacts, and it seems to have helped. Has anyone else found this solution to work?

And on a slightly different subject, is there going to be any hardware problem (ie plugged heads) for me, using the Pantone ColorVantage pigmented ink?

Several years ago I used my 1280 for Sublimation printing at which time I used a continuous feed ARTanium UV+ Dye sublimation system. I ran a cartridge of normal ink through it about 3+ years ago before we parked the 1280 and have not used it since. Just recently I purchased ink, the unit is running smooth, however the yellow and black are clogged completely.I have emailed Denny about his detailed head cleaning instructions.

Are there ways to clean the rollers? Any preventative maintenance that you all do?

Thank you.

We have serviced hundreds in this "family" pretty much says it all. I don't see any posts of satisfaction on this site for actual owners of this scrap heap of a printer but I do see plenty from people who actually own them. You apparently just fix them. They make you money. Of course you like them.

I resent that you insinuate that I have not used or maintained this printer "properly". I have 4 printers. 2 HP's, a Canon and this pile of plastic and metal created and overpriced by Epson. I have had NO problems with the other three printers at all, ever. The HPs I have had for 5 years. So I maintain, this Epson is a pile of garbage.

tangosierra,
Bit surprised at the tone of your response to my post 3 months ago. Sorry, didn't mean to offend or imply that you were doing something improperly. This was a general observation made from servicing hundreds of these units and having many customers whose livelihood depend upon the reliability of the printers. We find that proper routine preventative maintenance, genuine ink and other factors go a long way to keeping these printers operating at optimal levels.

I have an Epson 1280, which has served me well for 3 years. I had not used it for about a month and had to go through the cleaning cycle, as it did not print magenta. After 10 cleaning cycles and still no magenta, I changed to a new cartridge. The same thing happened and I am convince that there must be something (dried ink/hair) clogging it.

I wanted to obtain a color and black cleaning cartridge but only the color was in stock. I obtained it and another cleaning device, which is syringe with tubing to squirt this cleaner into the hole (I think?) where the cartridges send their inks to.

I am not sure if I should keep an empty black cartridge in the printer while using the color cleaning cartridge, use the syringe thing to try and clean both without the cartridge, or just try and get a black cartrige cleaner.

Basically, I am not very handy and need someone's help.

Thank you

I have an Epson Stylus Photo EX and an Epson Stylus Photo 1280. I've had a lot of difficulty with the heads or cartridges plugging up, which seems due to evaporation. Keeping a small jar of water inside the 1280 seems to help some. I've been using Carrotink cartridges & I've never had this much of a problem in years. Does anyone think switching back to Epson cartridges would help alleviate this difficulty? Carrotink cartridges test well in all the reports I've read.

It is conceivable that going back to Epson ink may help. The water inside the printer should not have any effect whatsoever on the printhead issue. Most likely the printhead and\or cap-pump assembly need to be serviced.
Hope this helps.

Any ink problem resolutions recommended?...but please let me explain first...With satisfaction, I've frequently used my Epson 1270 for 8 yrs. I'm dedicated to using Epson ink and Epson photo papers only. The other papers used have been the average copy paper and a slightly heavier weight stock paper for use in making memory albums. I've been able to figure out most of the printer problems within reason (referring to the manual of course)..head cleaning, lines, faded ink on paper due to not using the printer for a few days, etc. However, two days ago, I replaced my color ink cart. and tried to print a photo using the premium glossy paper. The photo had horrible black ink blobs all over it and some type of ink impression in the right side of the paper. The printer sounded like the heads were clicking into something as it printed. I've gone through my normal process of cleaning and tried alternate papers. I've also made an attempt to carefully clean inside with a q-tip and have come to the conclusion that the ink pads must be too over saturated. There was excessive ink on some small mechanical part to the far right of the printer and I attempted to dab in the area to clean around it and the saturated pad came off and stuck to the q-tip. I've cleaned the oddly shaped pad, but don't know how to reposition it on the mechanical part and there are how many? other over saturated pads in the printer. Explanation over.... Do any of you Epson users think it's worth the time and effort for me to save my printer by doing the more thorough cleaning (after all it is 8 yrs. old) or consider buying a new one. I've been eyeballing the Epson R1900, but it's a little over my budget at the moment. I'm open for any suggestions. Thank you.

I could be wrong but the clicking thing, and the blobing sound like the bushing has come out of the carriage - the bushing is a brass ring that fits into the carriage and snugs it to the chrome bar that extends across the printer. My bushing came out and I thought the printer was kaput. I was able to push the bushing back into the carriage - I believe I got some help in a post on this forum to guide me to the exact process. It wasn't very complex, but do a search for it and get it right, my printer works today like it was new and like you I was looking at the $200 or so for a new one. This fix is worth a try.

Mark

I agree the clunking sound is probably due to the bushings coming out of the carriage. From experience, the only permanent cure is to replace the carriage (under $20). It is rather straight forward. The pad is most likely off the cap assembly. If you can't get it back in place, purchase a new unit (again under $20). Unless the cap assembly is sealing properly you will never be able to get good prints. Search the net for a service manual.
Hope this helps.

Hi, I love my 1280 epson but a few days I went to print 2 pages. The first page printed just fine nice and sharp etc, then the second page came out with no printing and the red light kept flashing and nothing I would do would stop the flashing. Someone else said that happened to them and they took it in for repair and was told it had to do something with a chip that needed to be reset. She asked how he did it so if it happened again, she could fix the problem. But he would not let her know the simple procedure he did. Is there anyway that I might be able to fix the problem myself' The book tells you that it needs ink when the red lite keeps blinking. But I know for sure the ink is fine. Thank you in advance.

Denny,

I too would like to be able clean the under the printhead assembly, but am hesitant about removing the assembly itself. If there's another way to do it, I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

I was about to throw my 1280 out the door but kept reading on this site on differant things to try. I got mine to work just fine from the help of this site. Also found out that no ink on paper can be an air lock in the cart. Thanks to your site I saved purchasing a new printer. Thanks LAZYJ

Prints from my Epson 1280 show faint parallel white lines. The nozzle check printout looks okay for colour, but the text words (ME290B I03193) have a missing line right through the centre, horizontally.

Repeated flushings have had no effect, and the coffee filter - distilled water routine has been likewise ineffective.

Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a 1270 that was given to me....

The printer does not see the color ink cartridge.

I have checked the contacts, and put in a new epson cartridge.

Where to go from here?

I've read the cleaning the heads and jets instructions. I've cleaned the inkjets and get flow through all of them with distilled water. When I turn the printer on it starts fine up to the 3rd charge. Red and Green lights starts alternating blinking.

What's next?

Is that the black charging that is failing?

I've had this machine for over 3 years and not really had a bunch of problems with it. I like the workhorse that it is.

I've put in new Epson cartridges. My problems started when I was printing a doc that was huge and halfway thru it started running out of black ink. I stopped the print job and started jet cleaning and now all it says is Printer Error when I tell it to print a job.

Is there a reset somewhere I don't know about?

Should I keep cleaning? Where?

Need some help!!!!! Cost to much to replace.

Lights flashing is a maintenance reqquest error. Read here http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html

Am I a happy Epson1280 user? It worked !!!! and you were right Wes, I had to hit the refresh button after resetting the Protection. I already had the SSC utility but did so again just incase they were different and used the new one.

May I say I am thrilled to have found this place.

Hi,
I have an old faithful 1270. A few days ago the colour ink light came on. I replaced the cartridge, now the priter does not print at all, the power light flashes continuously and the colour ink light stays on. I have tried to go to the "inkjetprinterhelp" site, but get a "access forbidden" message.
I have tried the "hold ink and paper buttons down while turning printer on" trick, but no result.
Any clues on how to solve this one will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Try the site again. But the SSC utility will not work for that error. All lights flashing is a Mainrenance request error. Your printer has a fatal error. It can be caused by anything. Try cleaning the plastic strip that runs behind/through the carriage. Use a lite touch. Clean and oil the carriage guide shaft. Then try the printer again.

Hi,
I dont know which one of the shortcuts you used but, this is the shortcut I used to download the SSC Utitily to do the resets:
http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html

I reset the chip and had to reset the ink monitor also.

Hope it works for you.

If replacing the cartridge stopped the printer working it's a pretty good guess that the cartridge is incompatible with your printer.

I'd try a different cartridge, preferably an Epson OEM to see if that solves the problem. If it was the cartridge then this will get it working again... If not, it won't.

I have this so called "Photo Printer 1270" it suddenly stop printing from any colors, that was one year ago, I did try all the methods recommended to unclog the print head with no success.
I then put it away becouse the exorbitant cost to send in for repair, I preferred buying a new Canon PIXMA 960. That was the best thing I did because when the Canon got the head clogged (this is because I am not using the printer that often) with just a flick the head comes out and an overnight dip in Windex did the trick.
I the got the old Epson 1270 out again to re-try the cleaning procedure, however it seams that id does not like my treatment. When I drop some cleaning fluid on the print head nozzles the liquid comes out from the head but when I try to print with the Epson brand new cartridge no sign of any ink on the paper.
What do you think, do I really have to trow away the blooming thing?
Regards,
olliho

The printing process requires the printhead to fire and for the pump to suck ink through the cap assembly. Check and make sure that the pump\cap assembly are working properly and the tubes have not become disconnected.
Hope this helps.
